Mike talks about Andre Reed and buyer's remorse

    jake scott found at 12:28

discovered pretty early on in the process of collecting MVPs. Is that Jake Scott . Who was the MVP of Super Bowl 74. Miami he is not an especially. -- difficult signature. I was told the beginning that he was he didn't do very many shows but guess there's there's. And a thought that he isn't as much around the Miami reunions in the does 72 Dalton. Type stuff that -- out there that he may be more difficult on that front but it seems to -- Jake Scott . Does plenty of shows. And that's all you need for -- these retired guys. Is for them to do card shows and then. Their autographs obviously with that are out there another possible misconception. Is that the old guys are tougher. I was asked recently about my collection and and I was asked will you seem to have all the old guys but not so much newer guys and that's that's exactly right. The newer guys who were still playing the Manning's Brady Aaron Rodgers . These guys don't to as many shows. And if if they do wedding. And done with that their autographs or tougher usually

Hi everybody good morning it is Saturday January 14 I'm Mike show this is the hobby on WGR. I'm glad to have some baseball news two to play away. Here don't mean this this hour a insure anybody. Here up top knows. This exists so I'm pretty sure I could contrive a baseball topic by cared to and I might have when it gets cold. And across past you know the beloved bowl season. I get I get ready I'm ready for baseball February 19 for pitchers and catchers met you collar the producer of the show lined up. A professional baseball pitcher for today's show and a car collector a guy Matt knows about through a mutual friend. His name is Ryan to going pitches for Syracuse in the Washington organization. And the way I'm told is what I'm told is that he is a collector and also is someone that. Likes to try to get other people into it and that's all I that was one of the reasons for doing this a few years ago was to hopefully. And convince people that I know and mostly people but I don't just happen to be the station that collecting is still very much alive and and well. It's different than it used to be and I've. You know I think I've illustrated that almost every week through a phone call or some other thing. That I've been here since I labor day of 2008. Was our first our first show of the hobby but one thing I saw this week that was really exciting and also baffling to me. And I I'd encourage anybody who. Is in the collecting all the I don't most of our callers are are not people who. Are avid collectors now it's it may be half as around with that but people who collected along time ago wanna know what to do with things either way I would love to talk to. From people might it might have noticed this and have an opinion about it I'd be very curious to hear what you have to say. If if you track sales of cards. And you happen to track sales of the Michael Jordan. 1986. We your rookie one of the biggest cards. Of last. I don't know forty years mean certainly one of the biggest if not the biggest of the 1980s Jordan rookie. In a grade of PSA eight which common sense scale of one to 108 close to but not quite That card has sold for around 600 dollars. And I I looked up sales of this card that sold on eBay and auctions. And I happen to actually I bought two but I didn't mean to buy two which is. Happened and I sold one quickly away so say I've bought one of these cards either way it was around 600 dollars that I spent. And is something that I had thought about buying for a long time and I've I've had just sold some things I had the money needed to play with. And I bought the Jordan Carter and felt good about it all the other people like I've talked to the collect like the idea that card and why why wouldn't you. As an investment I mean it's an iconic. Sports card from the eighties and what I've noticed in the last. Two or three weeks. Is that sales of that card have shot up. It's all about 45%. In a month. And that's not just because one or two cards sold for 700 or slower 800 dollars but about a dozen of them. Mostly if not all of them on eBay. And that is a big jump for a card that I don't know it's a big card but why would that happen now. Any ideas I I don't really know are are the Charlotte Bobcats good or something. I'm kidding me that doesn't even matter. Com. What are these PSA eight Jordan sold for 999 dollars that's about a 625 dollar card that shot up like that. In in like no time at all. So. I I see something like this aren't eager to mention it because. The hobby. It's kinda like I don't need this it's like buffalo though and certain ways you know it it's a lot of a lot of a lot about the past. And how it used to be and with with collecting. As. Sure a lot of you know. Up until the mid eighties. Well in the mid eighties in the late eighties mass production started. And everybody got wind of the the notion that you could get rich through baseball cards and in turn started buying them. So pretty much by 19911992. Everybody had everything. And what happens in you know what happens in the economy to it is something. Like that it just the the bottom falls out and that's what we know that's what explains. A very simple level why. Cards from those years are all but worthless not all of the Marta got an example for you today as well. Of what kinds of cards aren't which I think might Tom be useful to many of but. We know that late eighties or early ninety's you know you've got almost nothing there. But prior to that there's still a lot of lot of money and a lot certainly. And a lot of fun to have and I think this card which is not an old card for this 1986. For a jump like that that I myself really can't explain. I'd love to tell you about it because what it what it. Also says among other things may be about Jordan or whatever. That collecting is still alive and well. And and people are throwing money like that at at at a card like this. And what what I also has happened from from this surge in the sales of Mac card is that now. You see people who do pay close attention to what things are selling for. You know dealers probably that have this card immediately go listing them on eBay for 800. Or 850 or 900 dollars because they've noticed that discard a shot up and I think that obviously they think that you'll you'll jump on that but you never knew your smarter than that. And I would think come they'll just end up sitting these cars sitting on eBay like a lot of stuff does. Without without being sold. 8030550. Is the phone number if you have a comment on that everything else related to collecting the Michael Jordan rookie has taken a big jump. A friend of mine told me that the Gretzky rookie also has I haven't noticed that and I didn't see that. And on a website that I used it to track prices I didn't see a jump in the in the Gretzky but maybe it happened a little bit earlier. Maybe you've noticed that yourself the Gretzky rookie is is a hole in my collection for sure I've never had a really nice one. Tops peachy peachy is a much bigger card than the tops card if ever. You become upon somebody who's got both. Audio PG cart is is much more words that. Lines are open for if you wanna chat I have a guest as mentioned coming up in the middle to show for a natural mention the time but. That the pitcher right to telescope beyond in the in the second segment today at around 83825. Every thirty. I I alluded to. A card from the dark days of collecting the the early ninety's that Tom has some value in this might be interesting to you. Because many many people. You have have these collections these big amounts of cards from those years and they always wanna know what to do with them. And I give them the quick bad news which is. It is very little value in it and you you probably. And you probably could do well to donate them or give them to have a youngster who might like that really not a lot of money to be made. One. Exception to that is if you have a rookie card of hall of Famer that's perfect. Bad grammar all famers and perfect the hardest. If if you have a perfect. Example. Of hall of Famer 1989199091. You know those years. You still have you have a little bit of money there now here's the trick though. To to considerate perfect. You probably need the degrade on it which means sending in a card that otherwise. You know might be worth fifty cents if that. You know spending five to ten dollars on getting a grade for that and then hoping that you get a ten. And you end up turning that into I don't know thirty boxer so the example and thinking of which I should have told you first. Is a pro set football card of John It might be 1990 I don't even know which right around there. And this John rainbow card was selling on eBay. The auction was over and I sought for 47 dollars in PSA ten. Now those pros sent cards are everywhere. But the the tough part with a great in mind is that the corners are colored. They're not port in the corners I'm sorry the borders the edges. They're not white. Bordered cards and white border cards are going to be in better condition generally. Then ones with you know that are different colors because the the caller can chip. So you have orange and purple on these different colors of those pro stick cars getting a PSA ten is no sure thing. Because of this this chipping the can happen and of course always other factors like corners and and so on so this John card was selling pretty well now what do you do if you've got a lot of these cards from those years I don't know maybe you seldom. To somebody who wants to take that chance for you and you know the they get the rewards in that case. But. That I just wanted to pass along that there is the potential. That certain cards from those years. Will do well and you know there are going to be hall of famers in in those years Brett Favre is from. From those years and I think maybe what does it action packed or some. That's and sharp what's the Favre. Rookie and who my asking what they're they're all kinds of different variations in my mind disputes modeled by all of them but you've got. And that and Randall McDaniel is another one. Marshall fall. It is another one of these guys are all from those years in the role in the football in their baseball guys to. And you know if you find those cards in great. Perfect condition than you might have something otherwise you know you you still don't unfortunately. Paul has called an and is on WGR Paul. I don't today. Yeah I got a brother mine east large collector I kinda got into it over the last few years what have. Happen here it always is my brother goal and searching grabbed and dub I think. Keep it not a ball thirty Michael Jordan. You know rookie. Cards and like that industry artificially inflate to. Also guided sit not a bunch of bombs those other people that are not a bunch of them keep Michael by its lack three like you said 950. Dollars. It artificially inflate itself. The next thing you know the industry standard that night. So it's really just a few people manipulating at all. Not being in the stock market interest and yeah I guess that makes sense. I hadn't thought that there were people with them much to be able to do that but if it's if it's ten or twelve Jordan's these are all being traded among the same people you're suggesting. Or like it'll play a vibrant I've 1516. And I got a chance that you grabbed three more those. And you know I mean all the nice goal and 3950 am talking to a dealer down in Denver. He should not oblige all the side we've manipulated the market. The sixteen that I had a fifteen and I had previous combined might lack streak at an artificially inflated inflated price. I'm get you know I'm getting the goods on fifteen an ready. makes cents or races in your brother has about thirty of them. Dirty regret that bad. Yet. The thing right and don't do I don't put the Wayne Gretzky rookie card to might spoke to when I was when abdicated on my fight I wish I didn't. Yeah I guess. Yeah I think the thing about that Jordan sat Paul is that it's those that your recent set. There's plenty of it out there but you know a lot of people didn't take basketball cards seriously at the time they did the or years were they weren't made. And so I think I think with that that the leaders that a lot of it's hidden in a few people's hands. Fluid you know that may actually think it occurred. Just just one more point this is gonna sound really trade your listeners but my Brothers already starting to grab cricket cards. From Pakistan and you see emerging populations come and into North America. From Pakistan from India. You watch it's gonna sound absurd but in one year cricket cards will be huge big and I like it you have you know thinking thinking about that the distribution among the population ethnically. did are you to thank you Paul. Soccer cricket. Well that is that's a long term vision right there I I think the Jordan point he makes you might be right. Don't just assume it's right it's not my nature to do that but I think makes sense. And I have not figured out any other better explanation for there there are there are enough people who have. Enough of those cards. That can the and they can make that kind of difference. In the prices. Interest in our 8030550. Is the number that's. To some places up for the time being is an explanation for that. Last night after the hockey game. I was just flipping around figure to be awake for another little while so I as I often do I go right to MLB network what are they doing. And at 10 o'clock last night for another half an hour was one of there twenty greatest games shows Bob Costas to number Gucci they're on them. And it was about the Kirk Gibson game. Dodgers and days and Gibson was the only guest player who was on and he was you know just. He was somewhere else like maybe with Diamondbacks or something they were interviewing him electronically. And playing. You know the ninth inning of that game talking to give senate caught a just right just the right time. Talking to him that he was talking about his day you know he woke up that morning in 1988. How we felt bad how bad he felt physically. How sure he was he wouldn't play you know Sat in the clubhouse through that game game one of the 88 World Series Dodgers a news. Listening to Vin Scully and NBC. Repeatedly say how Gibson was on available that night and Gibson. Said Howard started to burn him he is started to get mad listening to that and even though he knew he was in no shape to do it physically. He started to get warm up to the idea. Of of getting in the in the game pinch hitting at some point. So he was talking about that and Gibson I was never as a kid a Gibson fan but. Men now listening to him talk and him and tell that that story that day. He could not agree with what I like about sports any more than he does it was it was great. Watching him relive that day and he said something that. After I thought about it I I decided it was my favorite tree in an athlete. They're showing. Gibson home to bat. For that in 1988 and he's talking about. The experience. And he says that you know a lot of people ask me if I was nervous or just what I was feeling at this moment walking up to the plate. That night and and Gibson went on to say I was nervous I was so excited there's just nothing better. Then being in this this spot it's what you live for. We also thinking like what what does the guy say who did feel that way but struck out. In in that kind of a situation and how it later in life he comes to think about the the pressure of all that I wonder if it would be different but I. I shouldn't even said that that's not that's not my point the focus is on. What Gibson set about pressure he just said there's no there's no being nervous. This is what this is why you do it. There's this clip I think about NFL films from a long time ago ourselves and this is why we run all those laps. And I just I just loved it I think one thing about athletes that just is so. Awesome. Is how they in pressure like that respond to when they respond to a well and I think. For me and all I AM and I think a lot of fans are the same way this is something that sets them apart from us because. Most of us would get really nervous and not be able to function as highly as we need to. But athletes who don't and look at it that way I think that's beautiful I think that the it's it's one of the few common traits maybe not it's a common trait that the greats have. Is that they they love the pressure I think they really do I don't think it's phony I think you know they they have a it on attitude about it and Gibson. Came across that way to me and I just I just loved him for it. I decided that's my single favorite tree in an athlete is to hear that that kind of things said. And by the way his on his since this is his rookie cars are super cheap not a hall of Famer Bob what a great place in baseball history he has. 1981. Tops with a little hats. There's a Gibson cards get a jacket on the tigers and super cheap caution offering. All right. Ryan to telescope coming up a pitcher for the Washington Nationals and their organization. Was with Syracuse. Last year AAA card collector will talk to him all talked about a few things. What it's like to be a collector and a ball player at the same time they'll be plenty of time to for calls for your opinions or questions 8030550. Is the number I might show opened this is hobby on WGR. OK here is Ryan to telescope the morning Ryan nice to talk to you have my name's Mike show. Are good morning drab and you're welcome where were you these days I am. I am on the back end of it doesn't get out our driver and now Miami this in Indiana which arm problem right out side you know. We're just a sightseeing trip I know I'm my girlfriend parents live data is good so I'll while Iowa is kind of shut it down after planting a bomb and We're visiting her apparent now that I'm going to start ramping up my off season training or. During training arm and back to Indianapolis to train now with the pitching coach in America where where. Okay clear in the the nationals organization and just becoming. Familiar with you this week since Matthew got in touch with you about coming on here while Venezuela what was that like. It will a lot of fun you know it really. Prepared me you know middle and I can expect open this year I get a chance in the big you know it. And just. And you know extreme and there are so many people well it can mean weird aren't 2030000. People are you know on some night and cheering him into it there's trillion make between eight European soccer matches that. And a good college football rivalry and that was just. The band Mercury hit band were intent and the coaches the players you know. top notch I was able to play. Look such names you know are pretty good cockroach and brawn no I got. Henry go. And Carlos Gonzales so I mean you know Derek and there are a lot of big games down their Israeli and let. Very nice for you well of course the reason we're in touch with the used to talk about your collecting it says on Twitter for people who want to follow Ryan. Ryan to telescope of course would be that the handle there it says aspiring baseball card. Autograph collector how how did you what what what got you started. Congress started literally my dead you know it it was the thing that kinda bonded him and I totally I totally yeah you know Monty discussion or nearly 2% should say to Becky you know from Earth Day and of course immediately I would bet there are room in you know looked at baseball cards is that gone up and iron got about you know I baseball players and every. Every couple monsters so my dad let me Italian baseball show that would be around the be about it. Our guys I'm you know when I was younger we go to the card does look around we we couldn't afford it. Maybe I would try to bank and you know in and get to guard. Didn't have so I really. Really got into it and. I kind of stopped collecting. All college and. Does this year. Was very. Indeed indeed mean first Bowman cars so I kind of sparked my interest. What did it right away and and Cindy need gated me or how it very fortunate to deal autographs and baseball card though. You have really been able don't want them the cards and get out to my family and strand. Want to know mechanic got me back in the look like there's so to speak in credit running out of these cards like you know and not black Very nice trying to go with me here on the hobby on WGR. So what are some of your your best things are best autographs. On my best autograph. I think they have right now. Is to doubt today. World Series Jersey from the they gallery the Longoria the autocrat that got a World Series patch on it. It's. Authenticated PS DNA in it even got Adam Longoria has hologram on that I was able to work on that. Com through trade and I would give my best baseball card would be. A graded Nolan Ryan rookie card Nolan Ryan probably the one person and I collect. Just as he did. I love watching them play on TV and I was is the one purse I want to emulate whenever on the mound and though he was kind of a one card that I always try to collect it now that I collect it start ramp a little bit ease kind of the one that around. And try to come first a question back up again. That is a great card Ryan as you would know of course. Want out of his era he's to me he's the top guy for collectors mean Ryan. Obviously also had a great career needless to say but there's something extra about him he also pitched for so long so a lot. Lot of kids at different at different times along the way it would have been exposed and you know in a 22 year career something so maybe longer. So I'm really and that's the one painted I'm getting back into collecting been able to talk to some of these side and on super collectors just. Listening to you know their hundred people showed me pictures of their collection just being able. shared make new friends over you know just one player you know in kind of see what they have just talking about getting back in two in the being. Right how how well how good is your rookie card. Integrate. A good grade eight. Right now I'm you know it really good but it is currently the one that or depressed elaborate. We'll check back at an eight Ryan rookies very nice. Okay right to just go with me I'm Mike show opened this is the hobby on WGR. Ryan what kind of interest have you found that there is among baseball players in collecting. You know it kind of hit it in Ahmad. I'm not quite sure I know that. He checked. It probably super collector in the terms of you know the player world I think some people do extra actually with their own cards you know when they get released. You know sometimes the companies will give if you your own but obviously don't you go out autograph and or maybe that are the special hologram or things like that were more on the market as well you know looking because the card companies just don't. Kinda the promotional because that would take away you know from the around so we're on the market look at as well you know especially are aliens and com you know one sound usually. And outlooks or or things like that but. I think in terms just kind of collect and our players are really not quite sure but I know I know he's check is it he had that in the cart like. I've heard that too and also a couple of guys I've had on the show Dmitri Young with a famously great. Hall of fame rookie card collection. Why one of the best in existence Brad Ziegler from the days ago these on the really yeah Ziegler Diamondbacks may be. Arm he he's been on with me he is a big collector. Craig Rabach is another one although I think he might be out of baseball a player. So I'd like to find out about these guys that that are into it and of course you know. The access you have. Is so is so excellent here you are in the Washington organization what better. Organization would there be to be in for four you know if you're a collector right with Strasburg and Bryce Harper. Oh absolutely I mean you know there as soon as their cards are coming out there are being carved out by by people that they got out there. Tomorrow must you know I've played cards so bad and being able to watch them play on the field and also watching the value you know what their cars street. And what are your prospects this year Ryan you said you're open to make the big club. you know obviously that every cut every baseball player stream are much you're in the year and AAA. Eric New York with an affiliate and I'm very fortunate that the national that I did and they'll like that it kind of work on things and situations so. I think in the I'm I'm partly gonna start again as Eric Houston. Oakley at the scene and go to the I want I hope that you know the national TV champ and The nationals look better than ever right. You know what they're they're just getting better you know hopefully that. We can work got to deal copper Prince Fielder at being you know bring in that lineup would be. You know incredible and just bolster really strong. irritation and I think you know with the addition amount GO Gonzales starting look at national. You know there at that rotation going to be deadly you know and that they're able to that big bat that they wanted. and actually going to be a team to be reckoned. And I agree with that Orion maybe if if you're and you're going to be in Syracuse are spending more time there meet we will meet it's about two hours from here. And of course lots of games with buffalo and Rochester that the Syracuse. Plays every hour. And relish that not just about military is trying to plan now. On the I've enjoyed meeting you volley on Twitter hopefully my listeners will too and good luck this year. Appreciate their grammar or you're welcome to Tesco Washington. Nationals and I just abruptly cut them off without meaning to who was looking for the hold button and I hit the seal later but there sorry about that. I should apologize that was abrupt not on the air but you know behind the scenes here. very interesting baseball trade last night. Love it for the Yankees. The Yankees traded. Jesus Montero big catching prospect who did spend some time with them last year and did all right. To the Mariners for Michael Pineda there was more to the deal but neither is just I mean fears this guy right handed pitcher what do great pickup for the Yankees. I I won't I'm not on the inside when it's on the giving anything you can't get anywhere else by a lot of people. Love this trade for the Yankees to needed just huge upside for a four for him. And Montero was you know a good prospect but not like a sure thing in most minds any thoughts on this Matthew. Well the biggest thing is Montero is that he can't catch so he was probably gonna end up being DH. Which the Yankees don't really need one they have a couple players who need that DH spot give Jeter days off giving Iran days off. And they really need to fix up the rotation the sky 67260. Amazing first half. Right second half he fell off a little bit but that happens with some young pitchers when they. Throw Major League sells huge talent. Yeah yeah I think I think overall. You're getting back something better than you giving away there because there's no guarantee if if Montero becomes a catcher. And he can hit thirty home runs that's big value but he's a first baseman DH you can find those all over the place guys thirty home run. Very sneaky good move by Cashman just an NC north saw coming. A great trade for the yanks. All right some final thoughts here including one on some typing on eBay coming up call me feel like 8030550. I'm show and this is the hobby on WGR. Ryan to telescope Washington Nationals organization pitcher against him for being on. Double things I wanna get to in the last few minutes but feel free to erupts and supersede me because I'm always. I always want that eagle 30550. Is the phone number beyond this is the hobby on WGR every Saturday morning from eight to nine. Today run to the NFL playoffs start starts rather. And both teams will be on WB yen as we have the sabres tonight at the islanders pre game it's six. Saints at niners. Near record high temperatures for San Francisco on this possible mid sixties. And there's whether there are also perfect day the game tonight that I had a chance to go to I talked a little bit about it. Broncos patriots of looking at wind chills in the single digits little bit like our weather or a lot like it. Tonight for a new England and then pretty warm tomorrow the Green Bay game decent for the Baltimore game to you know mid thirties but. Nothing wacky that I read would be would be happening there. I got some last night. It's not as jargon that is losing. In in a bidding war on eBay at the last second. I've talked about my. Collecting Super Bowl MVP signed mini helmets and the right Aaron Rodgers helmet. Was sitting their last night in would be expensive. I decided with. Five seconds to go to bid eighty dollars above the leading and I got beat. I got the bid in Bristol got beat snipes are hard to. Hard to deal with. And I guess that means I should. Be one of those guys that you know you you set. A bid to go automatically right before the auction is over those are different programs you can use for that. And I don't know like maybe that's not why I lost like I did the same thing always I was watching the auction. But it's frustrating to lose that way you don't know that people are sitting by their computers bidding at the last second like you are and if you're like me feel like you know. Your superior to those people who just set a program to do their dirty work for them I was didn't like losing that Rogers it was a 200 dollar helmet a big ticket item and it had the inscription on it had the JS a certificate. I'm I'm I'm very particular about these not gonna. You know by any fakes. And I thought I had that I was bummed out here is bill on WG RI bill. out when I was younger I used you know collect cards and collect them you know every year or not put him in a shoe box and I'd like I have before choice. You know my house my little brother would always get and myself. But over the course of the years you know you're not collect them and put them up there and and I got older you know you did you really care about collecting cards anymore and I just you know let them up there and course and I want it to the army and went stationed in Korea you know about how truthful because. Home. And and just being given thought it really didn't care so that it at all anymore sibling you know. Get my card and probably up hit fairly well before choice in the attic. Yeah I was just wondering that they'd be where They sure. I'm in Korea we're talking you know these these are about a half century old these cards. There probably aren't they are very collect probably what they when we could walk up to the store and you know they won't like a nickel package and like so that checklist that check everything off tonight rubber band of not put them in. You know like old shoe boxes vitamin a poor choice so that my brother couldn't find them like a just forgot probably 62 through. Probably 68. On yeah that's that's a can be big money. if there in rubber bands. They know there are probably there's probably some damage. Older definitely damage confirming we we're always going to rule on trade numbers hold my friend because we are welcome we all had our favorite teams. let me say that and the derby there probably be some money and it if there's big money. The condition would be that the the key factor there. Like all they're not in good condition they wouldn't be worked very much them. It would be worth less but just how much less really it's it's just totally about what kind of shape the rim and yeah it's proportional so what are we get into this house. I don't know but the the request of the kind of wait for it to go up for sale but you know. For the flip rhetoric around the corner from it you might still visit it'll be old neighbors. From time to time and early mentioned that anybody else. This of this of this is puzzle a puzzle are here and whether another and it's it's it's it's definitely not your property anymore. Exactly know that the legally they're not the president not mine because you know obviously they. They're part of politics though. But if you knew with the people who live there. And you said to them look I I think there's something valuable in there that I I know where it is and you don't let's make a deal. Think about it that. What do you think about that. While maybe I'll just try that. I'll tell you all all all tell you where this is and show you how to get that it and will split the it will split the cause or the profits 5050. Maybe some like work let's interstate and let me know this plays out bill okay. All right thank you. Thought that's out what do think about that meant you better approach. I don't think he's in back. Known. I think it would be really weird if someone came to me and said hey there's Mike crap in your house from a 4050 years ago and I. Paul your floorboards and I dig in there and you know but it's just it's an alluring prospect these things sitting in there and wondering if they're still there and how much they might be worth super cool. That guy wants to write me so I can follow along in the store be thinking about them like what exact what I wanna do in that situation what would you what would you do it's a good one. Well I mean if the cut was picking up the potential cut then maybe it eleventh there the if it's my house and someone says that's a whole other matter. Minutes are what are you gonna pay for the damage. That's done that you'd pay for the repairs. Very interest in the to go lot of different ways that one. And only has Ricky bones cars. If he's got. Mean if he's got 62 in mint condition he's got big money no mint condition that's a but still there's potential there interest thing. I like that one I'll be asking my friends this weekend. What they would do in that situation hey Ryan gets left four assists last night don't get your hopes up. Have a great weekend I'm Mike show this is the hobby on WGR.

What's up everybody I might show welcome to the hobby here on WGR Sports Radio 515 buffalo. And also WGR 550 dot com got a good show -- I think today. Major League pitcher Brad Ziegler from the Oakland -- will join me shortly. -- is not only good pitcher started his career with 39 scoreless innings in a row a record pretty good. But he is also -- car collector read about him in Beckett as someone who not only was in the collecting. But also especially collecting his own cards Beckett did a nice little page on him back and let's see here. March February march issue with Evan Longoria on the cover in Ziegler at the top. And since I've read that I've been interested in Brad and I wanna talk to him about collecting in his career with the case. Read costs -- will be on we'll talk about some fun cards through the year baseball through the years rather baseball cards sports cards. With Reid. One thought I had about that was cards of players who later on became managers. Tony La Russa comes to mind from the 68 -- mentioned maybe last week that I picked up 68 set. And I look at the the Russa card a common really. And think about how like I never really even. Knew him as a ballplayer -- was a strange picture of him to look at. As as soon as I started -- being a baseball fan like each ten or eleven. We'll Russa was a Major League manager he managed the White Sox to the division title by twenty games in 83 that was a team I really like so. I knew who he was at a young age but I never thought of him as having been a player before. So some of these cards are kind of funny like I have a sparky Anderson card from the sixty set when he was -- an infielder maybe. But not a manager. And I'm interested in knowing just if there's any value to these cards and maybe if anybody collects managers seemed like -- a strange thing to collect but that's something wanna ask read about and read I think has his own list for me today. Of some funny cards not to coaches necessarily but cards that are famous through the years for different reasons. And also are really. Often not much more than comments price wise. And I'll give us an email today to read -- joining us here on the hobby -- when I read you -- card collector got all excited it's nice to talk to somebody actually on the field. Who is is in the hobby as much as I -- or you today.

I'm doing well thanks yeah I've been you know much more avid collector when I was younger -- still. So that we collect.

Well I always I always wonder I was a kid who sometimes thought about may be playing baseball -- trying to. That it would be it would be fun to collect my own cards in your guy apparently who -- who -- done that -- done how has that been for it what's it like.

It's you know it's interesting it's funded to meet great people and upset I've had a lot of people -- found out who is -- problem they you know they really tried to sweeten the deal for me in and yeah I would I would argue some nice to them return and and you go through and through those methods I've been able to get a lot a pretty rare stuff from my rookie year last year and so good it's been beneficial to me -- our recollection doesn't do a lot of until.

So the the magazine article that I found out about you win was in a February march Beckett you're still ahead at that right Brad.

Yeah IA you know obviously I'm still looking at. That popped up from 2008. The serial number stuff especially. But I I try to get at least one of everything that comes out of mind. Men and and really try to load up on the number stuff from there.

Here so bread giving your. When your rookie and you started as hot as you did I mean there's going to be a lot of buzz about a player like yourself how is the Brad Ziegler market these days.

Let these days as a lot a lot easier they tracked down my own stuff that haven't to pay a lot more than -- opened -- for -- my cards. The other there was little bit above last year -- any you know that little farm you know whether or debit card can matter not in his you know the fund finder you last year and then. -- all the would be off these in my card carried credited values and thankfully this year. Have a I guess between LA I am quite hold it did last -- you're not still feel like I'm pro ball pretty well but it is put up the -- card to down and eat in do arrangement more affordable and and the like as much.

it gives it makes their allows for there to be an upside when you're not as hot a commodity. As a year ago Brad Ziegler is with us here on the hobby I might show we're talking about -- collector -- you ever. -- and other players on your team or players that you know around around baseball are there are there many card collectors in the game.

You know the few I don't know -- to go to anybody else on our team. You know obviously about it but pat -- checking and is it collection an autograph and memorabilia collection. Men and there's the other -- other thing -- guys that they do it but that's not something -- talk about a whole lot you know just when -- in the lockers and stuff I didn't care until. That I'm only to have -- that will. Don't people sending multiple cards in the mail. You out of -- assign -- one for somebody that figure they're getting multiple -- that the DJ at the trying to sell them and saw all -- one and in the back to minority and then that you know usually that keeping the rest without anybody else do and that does they they really don't care about having their about to have a lot. To give my friends and family and and that they'll be able that. Be able to know this year that would interest pretty cool you know for them to keep me on a -- as well.

That's good for collectors to know because until I'm sure there still a lot of people who may or may not want to sell cards and you might have an opinion you wanna share about that but. If they're sending you more than one. They know what they're getting into.

Oh well if not are telling me get back. You know by mail you know a lot of -- there was going to be people who have like trying to almost kind of -- stories in the letter. And don't know that the believe it or not you know you don't know yet they're trying to get an autograph -- or there if it through the alleged deal. I tried you know I try to honor everything that I can just without going overboard and and that you want to destroy in the -- like a lot of guys do then that -- pocket.

When I when I think about like my collection with my friends sometimes Obama a little concerned if that's the word that. May be the hobby doesn't have much credibility in their eyes that they think I'm either -- little kid. Or you know may be -- destroy it'd be a dealmaker something like that do you think about that do you think about. What kind what kind of status the hobby brings -- credibility anything like that is that does that bother you.

Not so much Jerry you know I understand we find something rare that that. You know that would be something. There's been a lot of people would desire to have. You know it I realized the monetary value that the so it was that bit most of my collection. I I could absolutely care less how much Picard the word. And -- dead or what people pay form you know I I collect data card the guys I know I -- went right -- with a rookie Ryan and I were roommates in college. I'm so I attribute a lot of this stuff when it first came out and and thankfully -- that -- you in the big prospect and find out lot of this stuff real -- and in the next you know a few years later he does that really -- off. And you know -- without approval follow. Played against him and prep school for three years then. And four. No but you didn't you really have anything on the market until you've been big league and at that time he was really making flash and and this stuff -- flowed down either so. So it's you know nowadays is -- a lot tougher. To get. Rookie cards of those guys discuss how much it would cost. But I -- I've got to a preacher collection that stuff so Coleman and you know I guess that I'm not looking to sell it give it it all has personal value to me.

Very good what do you do with all your cards Brad.

Right now they're they're candidates can storage. We're in the process of being in the output of open at that point to have -- memorabilia room. Just you know a very secure member earlier about but one that I didn't. But I have friends come over and again we don't wanna see it but I did take him and then you know have on the group likely -- like dude this is off.

That's when I'm open for by the way Chris we all want that Brad Ziegler with DA's joining us here from Anaheim on the hobby I might show. So one -- talking about cards -- I mean maybe -- you pick your spots with your teammates but for me. That the hobby is is just so much fun to talk about and and I get in I get to sort of have my fun doing this because I enjoyed so much you like that.

Absolutely and Ambien and it player rep for the players' union and I'm on are -- be on the committee. Four in mobile licensing and that deal directly with trading cards than and how the players are compensated for what. Card companies make you know on the card than. And they do -- get the feel lot of cards. Just at least at least. You know I don't know if so -- picked -- the -- of the card. Comment what what the -- looked like before they even come out on the market and that's and I really enjoyed you know didn't see that side of it because it's. Yeah others. There's a guy who works for the players' union -- its sole job is to check. And make sure that the cards -- done appropriately. You know make sure that. But they're not infringing on your rights -- like that in and so he you viewed big name in the cart firsthand. -- demo cars before they even know they even are lower it from in the market for the unit mass production. Just so. So he can make sure that they're appropriate then. And you know that he shared that have put me because he knows I am a collector and and it's been a lot of thunder take a look at.

That's interest thing Brad can you tell us anything more about the licensing aspect of -- as far as the players go like. A Mac committed this about -- specifically ask you to tell us dollar amounts but if you if you want to that's great I just I think blisters or wanna know how it works from your -- Do you Schneider is utterly.

The players union itself. Owned the rights to all the players. Images but photographed the -- and for the cart companies have to purchase bill writes from the players' union to be able to put a clear picture on a Carter be able that. It put his name on there and and -- that's something that you I don't I don't like it even exactly know the dollar figures avoided you know. Let it cost to make an entire brain -- top -- prior sort of understood their top card. On the -- you know I feel good over the course of the year. I think a percentage of their sales about -- it's into the players' union. A percentage of bit like advertising and public said that it did yeah. You know being compensated for all that and unity of the year you know that's -- been -- Memorabilia itself and and two -- store sales like show. Elected to trigger a teacher intensive capital gains by the players all get small portion of that and then you know every spring training. I -- had big league and you before it gets if small check just based on. How much how much memorabilia was told you before and how much big -- time they had the year before. And yeah that's what that's disperse evenly among players -- liberated time.

Sure good so it's not about it got it all about how whose jerseys sold or anything it's about how long you were in the big leagues -- divided up equally from there.

Good right and I think the only the only time there's ever an exception to that is if there's a guy playing who let me say is not in the union. My. For instance. Kevlar on the union because he was Kaplan whenever the players striking in that 94. You know Barry Bonds I think elected for a long time to not be in the union. And therefore if you oversaw his. Is if you give -- character on video game was never right black guy hitting left into the lookalike getting right handed with a generic name. They have very -- that god hand jerk you know so that's you know he he. He didn't want. Everybody else being able to get a portrait of the money that you thought what all of -- him but he wanted to negotiate -- don't -- at that point. Through an agent and and that's why a lot of a lot of videogame company the card companies didn't wanna pay and what you Baskin and -- couldn't make cards and.

Make sense -- dramatic -- his card never had his name on -- he was the only one set food and have his own name on the card we're talking with.

only guy he yeah the only guy at that time that that. There's a clear you'd be part of the union and the licensing agreement.

There it is Brad Ziegler VA's without spread how about having to do autographs. For cards and then also for fans are there any thing are there things you can tell fans about. Do's and don'ts kind of and and it's signing cards -- guess and that's one for -- since you collect them.

No I -- obviously. I'm on the full market value of the guy account briefly -- card. I assign it a lot to a lot of people that that really destroy the value of the card. And so. So Leo they could become an autograph inserts are becoming critical -- and you want that are. That habit and after and that doesn't require anything that a little locked in a package over. Or you know bind them -- on these days specifically that you -- you want. But it hardly come to a game get an autograph. I try to make our every single day in and not all players do and all players have to argue that I'm an audit should I mean in the biggest thing is I think there's a lot of -- And -- was pressured as a player but there's a lot they PP because -- the game well because they come and wait outside the stadium before after a game they feel like we owe them an autograph. Well we owe them kinda stop and take a picture or whatever and they get mad at it that we don't have time and they did you know what it is assumed. We have nothing you know nothing to do our personalized and all we do on the ballpark play and then and -- invest the time we should we should be given back to the -- And you know a lot of guys really try to make an effort to be. But it is frustrate some time what else did not -- if you're sick you autograph. And I've got a meeting in the cold out you know -- report meeting. To talk about the team or playing that night and I'll take opera and the cops -- and -- and NAFTA so that. And it's like you I just maintained minutes signing autographs and got a if you will lead our orbit that you know we do have a job and and we do. We do have personalized sometimes after game you know my my wife has been found I want to go out at dinner -- and and that your my parents or any other family -- by get a lot of stuff after gains. I can that's kind of my Simon and a lot of it don't understand the need to hurry out after a game you know inflated by that. But you know we just run on different schedule we you know we wake up at 11:12 o'clock -- lot of -- going about it at Warner Q after games.

That's all there it yet that's all very fair I think Brad I think is of course it's because of the money is and it is that why people think you'll warm stuff because of how much more money the players make in the used to make.

I answer a lot of and you know people people a lot of people discussing our -- there. Are you know. Just this glorious walking there's you know because of the money that is involved we don't have to worry about anything breaststroke I've been and we all have stepped on our our personal lives. You know we don't want to become public in the and its. You'll that you never know sometimes when a guy's going out of pitcher and a gamer gotten out to play right field in the game when he's seven you know you -- daughter sick home. And you you know you're worried about that all the time and a lot of people who don't think about that they can always do that a baseball and and you know we we very much you with the same problems that. Every of people all -- that then and it's really frustrating when they don't accept that.

Interesting to hear you say that I've got a lot of opinions about them myself may be some other time we can talk about it before the gold. Before that you go -- you know Dmitri young and his collection.

I do not and I I've never never even have the privilege of playing against him.

He has been on the show he has one of the best graded. Vintage cards so our collections in the world. It's all Hall of Fame rookie cards and he's out buying PSA nines and tens of cards from the fifth these. Sports market report from PSA that a profile on him I've I've talked to about it. And it's just it's just unbelievable what he's got -- And if that appeals to -- someday maybe maybe your collection old head in that direction.

That may -- relative speak if nothing else clever idea ever have a chance to meet him then they'll give us something to talk about.

Welcome back to the hobby I am Mike show you can hear our old episodes online at WGR 550 dot com look for the hobby logo. And find the audio archive there on the right side of our hobby page. Time now to bring in hobby regular -- cost Coca the head buyer from David Adams DA cart world dot com what's up read. Wanna get a little the oldest -- with you today toggle baseball here and I'll I'll get specific. I had I've I've mentioned on the show I recently acquired a 68 baseball set. And lot of great players in the set the -- rookie of course the bench but also there's a pretty nice pretty nice collection of famous managers who were in this set Tony La Russa. Comes to mind and might might colleague here injury looked at the Carden said who knew Tony La Russa ever looked like a ball player. So for guys our age -- wonder just what you might think of when I'm talking about this you know some of these some of these managers that appear on older cards his ball players it's. I think that's a pretty interesting area of the early thought about it before as a collector. What do you have to say about it and -- think.

of the managers. Bennett appreciate it about it like GM Terry Francona -- collectible cards of them when they played. Back in the eighties. -- like -- to -- Ottawa be granted you know they had varying degrees success of their careers that by Adobe's really superstars. But its its status he'd what stage -- a thousand manager and a pretty good one. That their carts started to have up barrels of the -- Prescott which which you'll. Beats me to believe that people wanna go back to collect. Pull out cards. Current managers who used to be players for.

Yet that I'm I'm actually glad to hear that I wondered if there would be I was -- a question I had in mind for -- wondered if there would be actually more interest in their cards it stands to reason that there would be. But I guess I haven't really noticed much.

Well did that to manager cards and that comes to mind. First and foremost. -- be used before players is just before -- Tommy LaSorda. And 69 top sports camps in both -- I -- force whatever reason right away but after the protests on one attention. -- And it went back up because of that people want to celebrate -- to replace about point. And I think you know. Can't practically -- five -- maybe it's maybe saturated in his cards started to take it and move again and in my social purposes buried in the 81 tops that -- Not too many stellar rookies there. Third year that yeah his cards started to make a charge to after after The Beatles wanted to do was.

For all the social Carty someone of those future stars cards right Dodgers with a little blue hat -- it. I don't know maybe he is -- checked. We're talking with the -- so you know you mentioned the sort and sparky Anderson I I think the sixty set that I've collected and sparky Dick Williams is in there Tito Francona was a player in those days he's in there. Joe Torre comes along read for the most part would you say this would you say that for the most part though. While there is some passing. In increasing interest from time to time with managers it's not really the kind of thing where you would see a big a big upswing.

Now it's it's definitely. But usual and it's it's cool to include them it's part of the -- even matches are current -- salon. You know pops or whatever or trying to include -- it's when -- that's and it does make strange thing. Editions. But for the most part. Most kids back down there most of those now just don't seem to really care about. The -- country regards.

All right -- how about some other sports here I'm thinking about one of the seventies hockey sets might have been 74. That has Scotty Bowman and Don cherry and -- ever you do cherries wearing funky sue. Ballmer I think is is wearing like a warmup jacket in his cards and those those cards are in the book. Price wise so -- would it be different in any other sport and a football there are some football coach cards from the old days to.

I really I mean. They do it attracted about. -- Or. It was a lot of static in the final Americans. Most coaches secretary a couple of party Arafat my -- Then he did in the sense that there really isn't much crossover against the greatest crossover would still be coaches are used to players I think basketball's probably the one that. Principles. Widespread. Notoriety with -- told Jackson apparently for right.

Okay I'm thinking you say Lombardi I I also recently came across a 64. Philadelphia set in its not like Lombardi or the other coaches have their own cards but. There they have little little face pictures on the on the -- cards. And that's a pretty nice set for that you've got top Lombardi Landry Shula George callous. On the bears cards and all they don't have the wrong but at least are on their at least they appear 65 to. So there's a few years of that. All right well that's one area wanted to cover -- did they read just some of these coach cards like or managers when they were players it's wanted to get a little bit more background on that. You found out -- you went through and looked up some some famous cards that are not famous because of who the players are exactly or whether they coach played managed whatever but they're they're kind of famous -- funny that might be the better word for different reasons.

Brett there's it was a -- cards for whatever reason are funny or they're courageous thing. But one that comes several inspired for responses to the infamous Billy Ripken cards -- clear. -- the debt that sort of one of many dialogue -- similar lines of where it's quite good taste. You know that one of the ones we just talked about the opposite it was simply to build smart card. I put my it was a management and yup and as a pitcher Adam. Status -- the barricades. And he's holding about worries yulia Japan on the top of the patents and -- on the ground. And whether it's intentional or not knowing Billy Martin probably is the waste disposal about. It looks like -- what for the birds to India to McCarron oh yeah. And it's -- never got fixed -- northerly mattered two or government parents checked but if you look at it. And stick it -- deliberate is in the kind of humor. That he was for what that's probably --

They might have been intentional and it might have just been passed off as you know something unintentional at the time right. He might have been managed the tigers then. To jump back into thinking of managers like it you have these players that I mentioned like La Russa you mentioned sparking Anderson. Guys who were not accomplished players they were major leaguers but not great players assorted -- became famous as managers you have. Take a case like Ted Williams. Who's got a at least one or two manager cards from the Washington senators right around I think he's got a 71. Manager cards so you have guys go the other way too.

Yes definitely. Then you know boasting about. Where about players -- is that that's -- intensely on cards because of the other stories like. It Gary -- 195 tops and brother take estrogen for -- so sometimes the players and sometimes its staff. Who that tops or whatever company. -- it'll creative but -- The one thing that hostage over years ago as -- like 2001 two camera exact year but. When they put multiple players on the cards like the bird magic rookie yeah it's it's jail bird it's -- you start jailer called the bird magic cards right. We'll -- decided that they would put these two relative on the particular cards. One guy's name was -- offer. And yet again nameless Jung -- So if you put the two victories there you can refer to as the blockbuster card.

I guess you could. And that's that's -- that's not a mistake.

That's that's intentional by somebody conflict. Staff members of -- kind of funny when you when you're required you to do two together okay with -- and it has only it's not that but distasteful -- just so it's salute you were at all.

I'm okay I'm okay with the anyone there's a line but I'm okay with. Card company. Making it a little bit more challenging for you or you try to spot be it be nice if it were and it probably is somehow available to know like exactly what you think we did hear the good sort of make a -- a lot of it. But I'm okay with them taking liberties like that I'm I'm thinking is you're talking I was thinking of the of the Jeter card from 2007. Where they put George Bush President Bush and also Mickey Mantle in the shot in that was obviously. There's nothing subtle about that.

Knows it's quite intentionally. -- proved once again that victims. Create a little controversy they create little buzz about their products to return you know helps older their product which is it's very departure of the year. And like that it's in music if you question collected -- and it definitely did work I think some of you know products from Europe 2007 topped one is still quite expensive because of the demands for.

And we're just talk about some interest in cards through the years one -- one I thought of here Reid is the because it solving church on May be up pinnacle hockey card were you see Patrick Kane and his father came as a young boy sitting in the front row with the --

That's right that was. I guess we discovered a couple of years ago you know. And I don't know who knew that at a time I'm sure you McCain knew when he saw some for the cards. Well I heard about it I just didn't believe a signal to the public thought of that happening to serve out you know we -- in this warehouse sensible -- went up. In response that is that certain areas and you know pat Kane can make -- has one of the -- cards out there.

I guess he does and his father -- I I've heard. Is is what was well known in those days for being someone who collected hockey sticks might have been the the guy a guy who would hang around practice or after games and and suction. And pick up sticks from players things like that. So -- that connects to discard him being in the front row you can buy those tickets but just as something else that I've I've heard about the -- family. From the old days. Okay -- one other thing I'm gonna get into the next guys -- sort of you before we go what you go here. I am in now going to all the gory details for you here but a minute fantasy league baseball league. Where it's it's a game simulation. And it's retro. So we're starting up new in 1951. With all the players who were in the league in 1951. The draft is under way I draft eleventh I had that thought last night much to my wife's disappointment or anger perhaps. That whoever I pick with the first round pick in 1951. Here. Would be someone whose cards I would try to go get. Now that could be Jackie Robinson. All out there's a good chance it will be probably a hall of famers somebody who was whose cards can relieve runs run you some money. But you know again with with collecting wouldn't you say I mean there's always just new ideas you have and new things you can get into any time it's part of what makes great.

The lesser of maybe your maybe your wife would get a good idea and so do you torrents of -- early ninety's comic collection --

That's right shall shall insist that I draft someone who's basically worthless. There's just disparity expense or us. That anybody about Jackie Robinson anybody that's that we've never heard of would be perfect. Gregory nice talking is always. Okay well here -- that it's a stretch dramatic baseball 1951 draft in the first few picks are on Mickey Mantle Willie amaze me imagine Mickey Mantle you couldn't just go business. I just I couldn't do it depending until I get it there's a good chance of the -- idea out of my price range anyway. But it's a fun idea. You don't with collecting you know you just don't have to have a reason. To have a great reason for getting -- to anybody. And with the Internet it's so easy now to get in and out collections. You get bored with certain stuff you can sell them pretty swiftly. You get interested in a new idea try to collect in -- I didn't get Jackie Robinson I go out and try to. Whether it's because I sell awful lot of what I have. I'd be able to afford it sort of right do I decide on any given day. I'm gonna go buy all the Jackie Robinson cards that are out there one at a time best I can do it and you know -- That's what I love about it I love that there are these new. Basically call them sets. New new things you can do all the time. We talk about the new products a lot of collectors get frustrated with how many different kinds there aren't. The kind of stuff that you get in the given box you do not have to worry about that. To be a collector you don't have to care you can go back and basically shop online for singles or whatever you do. It's just like Bynum to a store really it's a it's a big part of it that I love new ideas putting putting emotion. I might show this is a hobby you can send me any mallet a hobby at WGR. 550 dot com checks and emails next stay tuned. I'm -- show welcome back to the hobby everybody good Saturday morning. We have a couple of topics we'll get to hear some email. As well the cup is out this year at the high end hockey product you know some of you have told me. Before that you are cup collectors I have dabbled in a little bit myself. But on church in the popular looking at about 300 to 350 dollars a pack. And that is going to be 45 maybe six cards. In a pack you can expect lots of autographs. Patch cards lots of cool stuff but that's that's the price range I'm I'm into here. The cup this year and the new idea that I like. I -- a lot talking about Jersey cards and such that. You know these these are kinda played out I don't know anymore how much people really get excited to see -- Jersey pieces of Paul Americo. Thank you let's step it up this is a new idea that I like the cup this year has attic I want it took -- colleague minor at the station credit for. Pointing this out to me draft board cards. Where you had the if you if you think of how the NHL draft looks maybe you know there's a big board. Behind were the players are announced and then introduced the -- the jerseys. The big board as the team logo and in the name of the player -- is slotted in on board. And the that upper deck got hold of the and the name plates from the draft -- the official entry draft board. And caught a -- and parliament cards so like about talk about Patrick Kane earlier. There are cards of him I -- lot of the top rookies now last couple years. The their draft boards are caught up and put into these cards I think that's a cool idea and it's it's a new ideas so I want to I wanted to bring that to your attention. I also just wanted to say one more time the the plan made before the last the last break I think is Israeli. But really nice and wanna just make it again I wanna I wanna talk a little bit more about that. You you can spend. You'd you can be the type -- person did not think a lot about this or you can also -- it's like to obsess about it which is more like I am. Just thinking about different ways to steer your collection you do not have to just sit back in settle for. You you certainly can but like all all the Topps sets. From certain years to certain years or all that all upper access whatever you you can. You can buy what's out there you can try to buy everything that's out there that's next to impossible these days. What you need to do what most people need to do. Is narrow. What they can't afford what they want. And the largest so many. An infinite number of ways you can do that. If you're a baseball fan you can collect hall of famers you can collect players from your favorite team. You can collect rookies from your favorite team you can collect -- least short stops I mean there's just no end to it. And I really encourage you to. Think about how specific. You wanna be with your collection and I just think that's really fun I think. You can you can take whether what position did you play growing up what's your favorite position with your favorite player which are lucky number all players that wore number thirteen. Or all cards that are numbered thirteen a read something in Beckett magazine I think it was about a collector reviewers online. Who just collected all the cards numbered number five. In every set. All time dislike that means some of -- weird. But you can't really get specific with what it is -- you collect and I absolutely encourage you to do that. Because there are just so many options out there I would want you to see I wanna see you get bogged down. In collecting if you get back into it and then lose interest again. What what you'd like to be able to do. Is find a nice pace to your collections so you could add to it every once in awhile at a pace that doesn't cost you too much too much money. So it doesn't become a real problem. But it also keeps you going. And whether that's hall of famers you know new new men are added every year whatever it is I'd love I'd love to hear some feedback about this -- I mention. Whatever it'll end up being Jackie Robinson or some player right draft an old timers fantasy draft and I might wanna go back and collect. All of their cards or some of their cards whatever is feasible. You you can just you you can always be doing that. And without the Internet. It's it's a lot tougher but now you can move your things quickly enough to be able to it to change -- you don't end up with ten different. Really narrow collections if you don't want that you could you can put them on line I've told you before I think you can really trust that. These days a lot of hobby trading and buying and selling happens on the Internet and the vast majority of it. Is a reliable you can use eBay you can use sports card forum another set -- like you have you have a a few good options there. Got an interesting email from Charles this week wanted to share with you. The listener to the show collects basketball. Was into it in the early ninety's and then got back into lately. Collecting rookie cards from all sports seventies and eighties and also the Yankees here's an example of talking about being able to. Really pinpoint what kind of collection you want to have so many different ways you can go. Charles writes my question is this how do I find cards that I can trust are not counterfeit. The easy thing would be of migrated cards I'm familiar with -- cards but I really don't like the cases they common I don't care for how they look. I feel a collection of -- cards would not look uniform on display. I remember hearing. You say you collect mostly graded cards I'm wondering if you know of a web site a dealer. And eBay dealer anyone that can give me some some info on spotting counterfeits. Or just some basic tips like I consider myself fairly educated on collecting but of course there is always more to learn. This is this is a really good question one thing I'm gonna say that I say a lot. From other questions from other topics. Is again how helpful it is if you have a relationship a good relationship with the dealer. Someone that you trust. Those are not talking online yet. Just someone in your area this this gentleman's local. Someone in your area that you can get to know and not even worry about counterfeits because they're going to be able you know most dealers assuming they've been in business for awhile. And that's part of the reason why you wanna trust them. Most dealers are going to be able to spot counterfeits not necessarily easily. But like I wouldn't trust myself as much as -- as much time. And and energy is I spend on my collection I wouldn't trust myself all 100%. To know a counterfeit from an authentic card. Your point about -- cards is very well taken. I am not I'm not comfortable really buying on graded on line. Because. I'm not sure what I'm getting it's not just Adam and that's that's much that I am worried about a car being counterfeit. But -- I'd be worried about it's condition. Creases. Some kinda defects that I can't see from the listing and I can't. Always trust the sellers to list everything there is about the card I think that you know isn't even. Necessary to do when -- when you're -- cards online you don't have to I don't think you do have to list every particular. Thing of interest about the card you know you might wanna give some idea a general idea what condition it's in. So what were your -- here is that are really interesting spot I I respect your point about degraded cards in the cases. And you know we've had Mario Alejandro on a couple times -- seven I remember him saying he's not integrated cards at all he said because. These cards are meant to be played with and help not putting plastic slabs and I respect that too. To me the reason the greater cards appealed to mean. Are because of the confidence I have buying them on line one and two I also enjoy the competition within the set registry. On web sites like PSA card dot com -- and compare. Graded collections I have two other people and it's not. It's not a real. You know smart thing to do financially because we can end up getting cards -- just for the sake of it and you can end up spending some money that way. But I admit I'm sort of hooked on the concept and he enjoyed the competitive aspect of that so get to know someone locally. Dealer wise to help you with this. And if you wanna buy online you can risk non -- and sometimes you'll find beautiful cards that you might be able to grade. And flipped. Four a pretty good profit. But Tom. You know it's -- to very texting situation there you don't want degraded -- you don't wanna worry about counterfeit and not exactly sure what you can do. By local trust people and develop a network that's the safest way I can think of the -- it's there's going to be some risk no matter which direction you go and about a time and Mike show thanks let's hobby hope you enjoyed Brad Ziegler and -- today tune in your next Saturday 8 AM eastern thanks.
