Card collecting you used to do it when you were a kid then you -- a way to college and -- through all your cards a way I heard that one before well that was then and this is now card collecting -- big business now -- of your heroes that your -- are still out there and sometimes they -- six figures you can spend hundreds -- new products and still make a profit how does it all works these -- welcome to dot hobby WG yards -- new -- created to keep -- up to speed on the latest trends and let everyone else -- just how fast in the lucrative collecting still can beat -- WG yards most avid collector might show.
Everybody good morning I might show in this is the hobby. Love to hear from you today I'm in studio with the phone lines open at 8030515. On this show as opposed to my weekly show with -- we don't. Keep a real tight rein on the topics it's early on a Saturday morning -- Various reasons for that. The probably fairly obvious. But if you have a question about. The hobby a question about collecting a comment and opinion to share this is the place and I'd be honored here from 8030550. Is the number. As you know if you further show at all perhaps that the show is not always done live and often -- that. And now that the football season is about to start. That requires me to work on Sundays with the bills playing usually that I don't asserted Monday night but usually a beer on -- From now until the end of the year most of the rest of the shows for 2009 the show I mean will will be -- I know we could just take the bill's post game show those too and I could do this live by have to pick one of the other. Really a lot of the bills games in the life in the last few years have kind of been the same so maybe we could pull it off. But we're not going to do that and to avoid working seven day weeks I'll probably end up spending most of these Saturday's. You know at home and taping the show. But today is I'm here and what I wanna do is give you the opportunity. To throw out ideas -- things you might wanna hear things you'd like to debt from the show if you will in the coming weeks just had the golf show on with Brian. And they're done for the year. We started with the show the hobby last year on this weekend Labor Day weekend this is basically an anniversary. And I wasn't sure until about. Two or three weeks ago if we would keep going. But. We are and I'm glad about that and I'm gonna be -- trying to think of new new things to do here. New topics and also I think. You know it's been a year. I also wanna make sure that certain topics that I think are especially dangerous thing to the audience we get back to and one of those topics is grating. I talk a lot about grating and I think it's something that. You know people driving around who are WG our listeners source sports fans but are not necessarily. Collectors. That's something that they might not really understand that you might think what does that by have a card collection from. When I was younger what can you tell me about -- it's the kind of thing that can be. Well a hand that doesn't always or even usually. But it if can be a moneymaker. Camby away free to turn your collection and a big money. You can buy a price guide like anyone else and look up the prices of your cards from the seventies. They are about my agent started collecting the seventies and 37. You could easily do that NC okay. You know what -- Lynn Swann rookie card books at this. Eighty Bob -- due partly whoever anybody from the seventies Gretzky. So this is what I might expect to pay for these cards looking at a price guide. By word that already have them in wanna sell them I could you know I think most people could figure out you wanna scaled down from the prices in the book. Do you take him to a dealer you go on lying start to do look at what kinda. Value you might have or wanna get -- cards and you play it out and most of its common sense but if you don't know about grating. It's the kind of thing or if you have even cards from later than that from the eighties. When. Card values really come down a lot. As people started to get more and more conscious of what kind of values are out there and it took some of the luster off. What cards could be worth the the scarcity isn't there things like that reasons like that. If you had cards from the eighties even and they were in perfect condition. I would suggest find out about grating. Figure out a way to get your cards -- I can help with that we'll talk to read costs -- about that about twenty minutes from David Adams he's an expert in this area himself. And then you can perhaps. Turn those cards are flipped them. In too much bigger money and one example that is you know that's a -- a extreme example. In practicality but. Stole a worthy one I suppose is the Gretzky. The Gretzky rookie 7980 tops oral -- The OPG book value on their part I believe is 900 dollars. And yes -- him like some of you probably can't remember. Just having that card and I remember right I had this game that my friend and I were seven years old but for at least play this game with a -- We would draft teams always been big -- draft teams -- flip this penny around like we're playing hockey. And the Gretzky card was -- I had to make sure I got it he was of great player of course it as a rookie. And I love them so -- to make sure got -- Gretzky card was creased in the corners were worn off and Namibian. Written on it and not even know what happened to it I don't have that card anymore not that it would be worth much. So while I'm you know that's a card that some of you probably had in maybe haven't thought about it a long time. You take the Gretzky rookie -- look it up in a book or -- says 900 dollars top semite. I think has that process 550 dollars book value for that art. A graded. Nine or in a crazy taste and it is only one OPG ten we talked to the guy on the show loans it. Calm down and in the DC area bars I don't know where there's the only one. That's been -- backed card gets in the benign it's into the thousands attend ended up. Selling at one point 480000 dollars same card 7980 Wayne Gretzky rookie. A card that goes up from 900 dollars to eighty grand in terms of real sale. So -- can't be like that it's hitting the lottery it's not something right want you to go home and think hey I heard about this thing. Or I can't turn my card collection in two you know. Tens of thousands of dollars. It happens. But it's not something I would want you to expect to be able to do. Though it's like I don't -- those cash for gold or anything like that. But it's it it out there. So what you know more about it in case you are. Thinking that maybe you have something of real value a big time value in in your house in your attic something like that. If you wanna call me up you can't -- 030515. Maybe you have a question about this topic have already started talking about got a couple are things -- get to hear. And we'll have read on in about twenty minutes talk more about how to do it if you wanna say well what's the next step to that how to I get my cards grated. Hang on for read in and will will go through all that with him and he knows everything about that. It's best you know as far as I know anyway he does. Who's thinking on my way in this morning just listening to sports news from -- cave who's who's here with me today. And others there was some big -- news yesterday the firing of an assistant coach. Different things happened the college football season is underway lot of games today. But it was Roy Halladay is pitching performance against the Yankees that time really. Stood out to me of the big Halladay -- not so much a blue jays fan but this a case where one player. Has just real the earned my affection I love the way Halladay works.
He works fast he finishes when he starts goes late in the gains on a regular basis complete games. Just he's all business out their loved -- he's been on one team his whole career. Very old school like that and that. Has led to me being a big fan of his and he has owned the Yankees throughout his career this year has not been so much that. As in other years but he he has been Yankee killer last night. He's up there in skydome the blue jays are Roger senator the blue jays have their powder blue. Old fashioned road jerseys on and and how they throws a one hit shutout. And -- thinking this as as you would know if you listen to the show before I'm much more interested in vintage cards than a lot of the new stuff. The new stuff is fine if it's pretty complicated. And I just don't have the same. Attachment. To the new players for the most part then the then the old timers. An old timers aren't even mean like like robbery and talking about seven season and prior for the most part. So warm I think about holiday driving and I think we'll be fun to have. Up whatever the best raw reality rookie card is and I don't even know what it is like I am so. -- so out of touch but I just relatively speaking not. That knowledgeable. About -- baseball cards or football cards from the last decade. And I could give via a year I couldn't give you sat. You name a guy from 60s80s. A great player you know probably hall of Famer I can tell you. What year his rookie card is what it looks like in sometimes even the card number. Actually. Roy Halladay a star in the game he might end up in the Hall of Fame I couldn't tell you anything about what his rookie cards are. And I thought why I should be able to do that now because I host the show but because I'm a fan of his. And a collector I should be able to do that. It'd be thinking this -- to -- after this with with the new stars one thing I think is fun about the hobby really fun. Is the idea of it as as a market place as like a stock market. And you can invest in certain players and pull out certain players by cell that kind of thing. That's a fun aspect of it for me it's a risky one. And it's the kind of thing that can end up costing a lot of money or blowing a lot of money depending on how. Crazy you get but I like that aspect of collecting and with the cards that I buy. Mostly. 70s8050s. Those values are very first arbor east thirty -- acted changing very much. One thing that has worked for me collecting old cards is. I'm gonna buy it for certain price I'm pretty much going to expect to be able to sell for the same price. Maybe a little higher may -- the lower depending on the economy depending on certain variables but for the most part like I've mentioned the 55. Set that I started collecting and I have recently backed up on that because I bought a 68 set. I bought a couple of football sets from the sixties to and to be able to afford that. I ended up pulling out. Of 55 I've still got some on -- but I sold all my PSA 71955. Cards I sold them for almost exactly what I paid for them. In in terms of rookies now like baseball's fun for me right now and there are a lot of interest staying young players readers in Baltimore -- solo in Detroit. Beckham is very interest thing. With the White Sox have players like this. That's -- stock market. You what do you decide that you believe Gordon Beckham of Chicago. Is going to have a big career and he's kind of slipped in a little bit he's not somebody that was -- biggest prospect eighth overall pick not a nobody. But not anybody's super stud. Lock. For Cooperstown. He is starting to look like he's going to be great player and in the major leagues for a long time. I see him as a buy I think of it -- a stock I'd recommend. Gordon Beckham in the same way that. Jim Cramer on C a -- CNBC. Would recommend certain stock purchases. That's a fun. That's a fun aspect of it for me and if you're not dealing in the relatively new players. There really isn't much variation. And there isn't as much fun to be had in that way. 8030550. Is the phone number if you got a question or comment let's go to Greg.
Now hi -- Hey I'm gone I'm -- happy anniversary and and additional beer amber meaning lawyers -- take you on the need help lead -- the new ideas so well like I have an idea for a good. And no I've I've been watching on YouTube channel they have a lot of box breaks. You know where people buy a box of cards and opened a macho the what they have at Belmont but they're right. And I decide Serbia not on a bad suggestion maybe it yet -- YouTube channel that a couple bought the curtain up that. -- I I'm very happy about the cup maybe we shot hockey -- the the higher good stuff good idea to yeah.
That's a good idea we could have I could I could. Find someone to come in here in videotape this or do it on another time and set it up you know that -- David Adams which has been a big sponsor of ours. I've done some box breaks with them but they're not exactly the hobby you know is not exactly -- show doing it it's it's David Adams doing it. But that's a good idea I guess I guess that's become really popular hasn't it.
Yeah man it's great I want to call a time when now when when news new product -- especially I think the cup popular and obviously it's expensive it's like. 500 dollar 0110 of those are not many people cannot experience. Opening of one of those pacs and out buying that I buy singles not. You know country get a lot of it's suffered an injury it's all about Oprah money they do.
It's a way to vicariously. Open those cards is to watch other people do it and I'd like I've liked doing that in -- in -- Just to see what's in a box and there's a there's a practical benefit to it to like here's a baby got the -- as we know we're getting with a cup by now but in certain other products that come out. Like UD black for example. What's in here is this something I wanna forma money into so it has in as a benefit in that way too okay -- Thank you. -- we should we should take this show up a notch and it gets and get some video going. Of open of that. I would have to receive a file this 11 thing I'd have to buy the stuff myself.
That's that's how it happened out I'll admit this deal. And I'm I'm still somewhat optimistic about this happening but in a year here's here's what I've really been happy about. And a little bit disappointed and in doing this for year. There was no radio show for the hobby worth anything. And I hope that this is. Show that you think is worth something to do -- if you're listening to an open that is the case. That's that's what I've tried to do I've I've indulge myself by doing it because I'm into this kind of subject matter and that's having an ever get into one might weekday show I don't have a circle of friends it's really into collecting so. This is it something almost cathartic for me because of it. And I've really liked. The feedback I've gotten from collectors locally and not people who listen to the show on line people seem to really appreciate that it exists. And that makes me feel really good about what hasn't happened is that. Don't call that the the infrastructure. Or the hierarchy perhaps. All of the hobby the manufacturing aspect of it auction houses. This the big the big hitters in the hobby have not intimates say they shut because I'm in I'm in buffalo doing a Saturday morning thing. And it's a it's a process. But what hasn't happened yet. Is -- bit there just hasn't been much in the way of credibility to loss from from those people. Like I I wanted to get to a point where upper deck for example. Would have to that the answer to things that that we that we as collectors brought up but they just they blow me off like I've. I've reached out to them and not even in terms of like getting products for me to show you as it were. But just a you know talk about some issues the hot -- there is a padlock on the hobby door you know there really is. The the the big timers don't want you to be able to see inside. They don't want you to know exactly how how cards are allotted and this really comes -- where -- talking about. Not just manufacturers it's it's a lot of the people that it's steer the ship. Images they don't want to its insides -- they don't really want I think. And I met again I'm not saying that they should give me this privilege the it is really want. The collectors to know exactly how it works. And I just you know that I don't think that really is only -- good thing about saying it's because. Of how. The show has evolved I just I think for the the hobbies sake. We'd -- be a lot better off if there was a little bit more honesty and a little bit more openness. Between the manufacturers and and collectors. And there's a transition going on right now upper deck has lost its. Baseball licensed -- is now making hockey. Product and things are changing in -- coming in there's been some turmoil. In the hobby this year that's been interesting. But level we haven't been able to do yet is convince. Places like upper deck. Some to a somewhat lesser extent tops. Bought auction houses all say them again and will be able to convince them Beckett you know. To really to really help us. And -- that's okay and hopefully that'll change and that means we'll have enough of an body considerable following to be able to get. A little bit more respect from them that's that's something that takes time. For sure. Recasts -- coming up from David Adams TA card world dot com if you wanna know how grating works and whether or not you should partake. Read and I will help you down that road next I'm -- show thanks for listening live on this Labor Day weekend this is the hobby here is Dan with sports.

I might show thanks for listening this is the hobby. I hope you enjoyed Brad Ziegler the Oakland a's pitcher last week. He was on with me we taped the show and he talked about his collection collects himself which I think I would do -- by over a Major League Baseball player. You also collects his college roommate Ryan Howard and this other guy used to pitching is in high school Albert Pujols. Which you know. Smart. He then went out that night I talked to on Friday last week. And he went out and had he took the loss in the days game against the angels pitched like two thirds innings two thirds -- five runs. I felt really bad about it I felt responsible and of those guys do a lot of game day interviews you'll get the starting pitcher. On game day but most guys you know 32 or three hours before game you can get an interview with them. You know if you're at the ballpark or by phone that's we -- there was a Friday they played at night sort of -- 7 o'clock game out there we talked a moment about 430. A Pacific time. And the ended up losing I wonder if it be superstitious pulled a never talked that guy again I know because once -- I did he he got beat. Liberate us all gone in a -- talk about greeting cards here's John now hi John.
Like Oreo. Q were you. I can't because what I was seven years old -- that that 78 I pop alt alt outdoor rock pile. And a after the game entire partner he's cited but there's also a special draft out partly it was or not. And and the ball well and I haven't done pretty good shape I just hear of the -- the well.
Oh it's definitely collectible. You know with these kind of things it's always if you're looking to sell it a matter of finding someone who would want to -- there are. Buys in collectors there are Warren spawn collectors may be have a guy or two on the ball went on to play in the major leagues it was 79 you might have Tony Peña. So why am I would I would take it to a professional. If you want if you want to get that if you wanted to get a number on how much it might be worth. Take it to take it to a place here in town that can give you a better idea -- it would it would be. Up with the ball over the matter of making sure it's in good shape and then. It's not really an area right know a lot about prices. It would just be some you need to talk to somebody who could who might have more experience than I would that. All right John. All of famers. The basic easy things to know about autographed items that are stock in boxes in your house or they're ready hall of famers on them. Other running Annie Hall of Fame autograph. You might not know whose rare compared to someone else. That be tougher -- know but you'd. More likely be able to know who's dead. Versus someone else if someone died the you know -- autograph might have more value if they died at a young age. Or some you know if there's some particular reason why just using common sense. Player might. Probably have more value and an autograph you know those those kinda basics. Can work for him. There is a read costs -- early on a Saturday morning although if Reid were in Hawaii. Where he hails from they would they would probably more likely be that you were just getting home or something from a Friday night on the town. What what is the deal here reader you around.
You build it out well remember him. I would become --
Six hours that'd be that'd be tricky if you you know went home to one home to family and had the what it work to do here are some of that six hours is significant.
Yes yes. The fact before I move. -- appear around no pretty well used to call me just the -- you know.
All right -- let's talk about -- today we've we've done this before but we've been on for a year now we're starting out in your to a wanna just hit back on some things that. That we think that I think are particularly. Useful for collectors for listeners. Say you know our guys driving around today read he has an old car collection. Depending how old perhaps that'd be one variable I -- spot. Any hears us talk about grating. And I say things like you know they're can be big money unit if you have old cards in great condition what more would you add to that to be able to help somebody like that.
The first airfares are almost become a possible that apple cart record in this and just just from with fiscal standpoint where we start I'll score card. How you feel like classic orders he sort boxers weren't prepared. Early eighties. So when you got one card out there and oxen or neutered. And it's a ridiculously high praise there they would -- these are great it's because of possible very. Quick visit to hear -- to the population or or all are now it's -- all album there and the public are not fairly certain player. And there's like a read your great.
At the well I wanna mention what that Israel quick but then get back to something you just said PSA cart dot com PSA where the big rating companies the biggest. And the population report is an actual breakdown of every card that there is and by grade how many of each grade PSA has has put out. So I can tell you re saying. I I look at an old car nice the only three of the PSA nine your example part of me might think read that that's because. Well it all lot of people like myself have been saying didn't haven't submitted the cars but time -- that thinking be flawed.
No it's it's not while mr. ever think that their cart would you mind here. And -- the reward people -- to the mark here SC. It's somewhat out of while the fact that there are very in my incarcerated if you. Think there are. And you know we -- part about the reasons for greeting me here -- secure card holder to sell a book smart or probably. Like ratings -- in. So the primary reason people incorporated because they could record -- the program. From readily available cart itself the very quiet so it occurred.
Yeah. Reed -- from David Adams he's had buyer they're DA cart world dot com is though website all right -- well let's just run through a few. Basic. Factors in determining what a card grades that I mean can you can you tell people just want to look for.
Well the -- support thing. You know there are look for -- it varies from person to person but I think -- was that there are well here. Yeah but look centering. In and for how the card is caught you know of the pictures center where the borders or you know all -- This particular picture you know here pick a picture of something no. Object -- last but regular people -- if you haven't -- covered -- That's an awful lot that has certain investors out kind of the Carter desert there's nothing else to complain about. You know these fail all the court wolf the you know -- You're carpal stated your but it occurred perfectly -- it just looked great no matter what. So that's the thing I'd look for first then you -- for another -- Quarter -- registry registration look -- all the colors are laid down properly Weatherford. Waxing involve a partner of the ball back in there.
does -- a company like PSA greed in context. Will they look at a card and say. Well this is very well centered for an example of this card or will they just compare it against a certain standard that they applied every card.
Well we're gonna have to pick it -- Everything -- particular issue I believe. By the year degree murder shouldn't change. For the record year or our particular error. Appear there and -- them all -- there about what. They're known for not required. -- is very solid. Not that Beckett is there anything about Beckett has you know a few different ratings services -- the vote total war when talking about. -- Is that Beckett has Beckett it is creating obstacles to peace here circuitry or not -- Changes it rating scale and -- period for card from foreigners he.
How so how does how does it do that out of -- they look at them differently.
I believe that with a view is that particular count. Certain problems. That. Technology. And corrected and these things like. Registration card how they support color -- corporate card different -- I think particular count -- the way to carpet Kyra you know nowadays code of very sharply yes and not so much so. He the way to paper gets cut would make a funny little. We've on the card. And the -- your own little thing of the considerations so that you could still have our great card just it will book as accurate. As a -- Wouldn't yet say if you look if they concurred. But as Americans to see it go look where it looked like a 99 card computer. Or what are you.
That's Beckett vintage versus Beckett -- services and I didn't even know that -- that's interesting read let me tell you and I'll say this is a compliment this time. -- round -- year you are the only you are the only person I've ever known who as a kid cared about centering. Like an -- when I was a kid my other friends. You know we would Carole little bit as we got a little bit more savvy in -- to get price guides and things like that. We would Carole little bit about are -- that is -- cards -- is this card sharp corners but this is a better. I would actually come to the polar I would think this card is better than that one say Marino rookies for example. But I don't know that I ever thought about centering until I started selling.
I heart started here -- quickly want to make sure my -- right. Are we target selling its -- it would be you know. What do they have made in the work. And an acquired. Variety of actually -- all the cards and make them nicer to connect to that and certainly there. And price accordingly it is. That there are few people out there. Why are there won't pay a premium for good idea. As high -- and other. -- table. And having on the bill are you could immediately -- Going to be one of the funniest situation you you occurred.
Yes I -- but you're ahead of your time that's how it is you know if you wanted to buy at a not necessarily well now you could do a graded but if you wanted to buy and a re a super. Well anyway I don't need to say it's redundant like. It is it is something that people will pay a premium for and you were charging one and some people probably didn't relieving got to. Go.
But. They'll have you know customers remember friends from twenty years ago where my -- they have got a great. Which PSA over the years in the -- picks it up with what kind of great it.
That's good I don't doubt it pager read happy Labor Day weekend and all talk due next week hopefully. Our art director -- from David Adams DA card world dot com. Keep the phone lines open we've got about twenty minutes 8030550. Is the number if you've got a question or comment about collecting or -- I can add to what Reid said -- to do that. Right after sports here's Dan cave with the latest I might show welcome back to the hobby here on WGR Sports Radio 550 and WGR 550 dot com. Live in studio today we take this show a lot I'm -- all be doing a lot of taping between now and the end of the year because I'll be working on Sundays. With with the bills' season about to start so what he's got a question about collecting or comment now be great time -- when. I'll be here on a Saturday morning again. In the next few weeks but the show will be on. And hopefully it'll be good in interest in do you. We've been on for a year we are going in the year to a very proud of that. And I'm eager to hear suggestions. Ideas about some some new topics we haven't got to. I am probably not the world's most avid collector I may be more into it then guys -- work with. But I know that a lot of view live. Expressed interest in the show to be -- written me or happened just listen I'm sure there are many of you to. Know a lot more about certain aspects of the hobby that I do. So it's been a learning experience for me and one that I hope continues for quite awhile. 8030550. Is the number I'll talk more about grating in in a minute some of the things read. Brought up on expound on a couple of things here in the last few minutes of the show while making time for a phone call or two if they comment. The -- one thing to say though is also just as an aside here it is a great sports day isn't it great sports weekend. The NFL hasn't started yet but college football starts the schedules loaded. -- school in the area if you're into that US open today Federer is on the court 11 this morning Djokovic 11 this morning Roddick plays John is there today. Soccer it's not a league day around the world but it's what they call it international break the leaks take. The top leagues anyway take an international break in they'll play each other in World Cup qualifying. And matches like that all over the world there are games today. You've got some you've got baseball of course were to September. So. Very good sports -- I think the weather's great around your -- how many people are going to be inside watching TV. But if you are one to do that I think future your choices that they are great starting right at 11 this morning or sooner if if you're into soccer. But starting 11 this morning with that with the open.
Don't read said that centering take him if he did he said it varies. Reid said that centering to him is the is the first thing. That he looks that way and considering what kind of grade a card might get it -- is an expert in Reid is someone. Who I would I would take my cards to and have him look at. To to help me decide whether or not to bother sending the carded a read do you see anything here that I'm missing. Yet there's as little print mark over here that's a problem in those little Britain marks that you don't don't you mean anything to you. When you're opening a pack in 1977. Can mean a lot. When it comes to greeting card whether or not a card will eventually be something that you could turn into lots of money everything that means something. With grating. But considering to me is is important. It's not the first thing I would look at maybe it should be. But it's not the first thing I would look at I always go to the corners first and I got a card here. With sharp corners and that's just really out of habit that's not a strategy or anything it's just. A look at a Karla is this cart great and look at the corners I remember. Actually two cards that stand out to me as cards that I have opened. Not when they came out but more recently. Sent in to PSA and gotten tens. On. One was a Kevin McHale rookie 81 tops basketball. And one was a Scott Stevens rookie edu. 384. AV OPG hockey. And especially the Stevens. OPG was famous for that. Even as late as the mid eighties their cards wouldn't have wouldn't. Often enough because cleanly. So you have these jagged sloppy looking edges. And ice at the card to PSA because it was centered nicely and because. But this one isn't. Wouldn't that go into the the thought the thought process something we've talked a lot about on the show even with Joe Orlando the president PSA. And you know he's elaborated on that a little bit. But it's just something that relief relief the roomy that a card with. While it's all very true that you really need perfection. You know just thinking of it basically. To get a card could combat with a perfect grade. It's not literary look literally true excuse me that literally true. That card was not perfect but it came back at ten because it met the standards I suppose so. Just like with you know a determining what you're things are worth. It's it's always good.
