discovered pretty early on in the process of collecting MVPs. Is that Jake Scott . Who was the MVP of Super Bowl 74. Miami he is not an especially. -- difficult signature. I was told the beginning that he was he didn't do very many shows but guess there's there's. And a thought that he isn't as much around the Miami reunions in the does 72 Dalton. Type stuff that -- out there that he may be more difficult on that front but it seems to -- Jake Scott . Does plenty of shows. And that's all you need for -- these retired guys. Is for them to do card shows and then. Their autographs obviously with that are out there another possible misconception. Is that the old guys are tougher. I was asked recently about my collection and and I was asked will you seem to have all the old guys but not so much newer guys and that's that's exactly right. The newer guys who were still playing the Manning's Brady Aaron Rodgers . These guys don't to as many shows. And if if they do wedding. And done with that their autographs or tougher usually

Hi everybody good morning it is Saturday January 14 I'm Mike show this is the hobby on WGR. I'm glad to have some baseball news two to play away. Here don't mean this this hour a insure anybody. Here up top knows. This exists so I'm pretty sure I could contrive a baseball topic by cared to and I might have when it gets cold. And across past you know the beloved bowl season. I get I get ready I'm ready for baseball February 19 for pitchers and catchers met you collar the producer of the show lined up. A professional baseball pitcher for today's show and a car collector a guy Matt knows about through a mutual friend. His name is Ryan to going pitches for Syracuse in the Washington organization. And the way I'm told is what I'm told is that he is a collector and also is someone that. Likes to try to get other people into it and that's all I that was one of the reasons for doing this a few years ago was to hopefully. And convince people that I know and mostly people but I don't just happen to be the station that collecting is still very much alive and and well. It's different than it used to be and I've. You know I think I've illustrated that almost every week through a phone call or some other thing. That I've been here since I labor day of 2008. Was our first our first show of the hobby but one thing I saw this week that was really exciting and also baffling to me. And I I'd encourage anybody who. Is in the collecting all the I don't most of our callers are are not people who. Are avid collectors now it's it may be half as around with that but people who collected along time ago wanna know what to do with things either way I would love to talk to. From people might it might have noticed this and have an opinion about it I'd be very curious to hear what you have to say. If if you track sales of cards. And you happen to track sales of the Michael Jordan. 1986. We your rookie one of the biggest cards. Of last. I don't know forty years mean certainly one of the biggest if not the biggest of the 1980s Jordan rookie. In a grade of PSA eight which common sense scale of one to 108 close to but not quite That card has sold for around 600 dollars. And I I looked up sales of this card that sold on eBay and auctions. And I happen to actually I bought two but I didn't mean to buy two which is. Happened and I sold one quickly away so say I've bought one of these cards either way it was around 600 dollars that I spent. And is something that I had thought about buying for a long time and I've I've had just sold some things I had the money needed to play with. And I bought the Jordan Carter and felt good about it all the other people like I've talked to the collect like the idea that card and why why wouldn't you. As an investment I mean it's an iconic. Sports card from the eighties and what I've noticed in the last. Two or three weeks. Is that sales of that card have shot up. It's all about 45%. In a month. And that's not just because one or two cards sold for 700 or slower 800 dollars but about a dozen of them. Mostly if not all of them on eBay. And that is a big jump for a card that I don't know it's a big card but why would that happen now. Any ideas I I don't really know are are the Charlotte Bobcats good or something. I'm kidding me that doesn't even matter. Com. What are these PSA eight Jordan sold for 999 dollars that's about a 625 dollar card that shot up like that. In in like no time at all. So. I I see something like this aren't eager to mention it because. The hobby. It's kinda like I don't need this it's like buffalo though and certain ways you know it it's a lot of a lot of a lot about the past. And how it used to be and with with collecting. As. Sure a lot of you know. Up until the mid eighties. Well in the mid eighties in the late eighties mass production started. And everybody got wind of the the notion that you could get rich through baseball cards and in turn started buying them. So pretty much by 19911992. Everybody had everything. And what happens in you know what happens in the economy to it is something. Like that it just the the bottom falls out and that's what we know that's what explains. A very simple level why. Cards from those years are all but worthless not all of the Marta got an example for you today as well. Of what kinds of cards aren't which I think might Tom be useful to many of but. We know that late eighties or early ninety's you know you've got almost nothing there. But prior to that there's still a lot of lot of money and a lot certainly. And a lot of fun to have and I think this card which is not an old card for this 1986. For a jump like that that I myself really can't explain. I'd love to tell you about it because what it what it. Also says among other things may be about Jordan or whatever. That collecting is still alive and well. And and people are throwing money like that at at at a card like this. And what what I also has happened from from this surge in the sales of Mac card is that now. You see people who do pay close attention to what things are selling for. You know dealers probably that have this card immediately go listing them on eBay for 800. Or 850 or 900 dollars because they've noticed that discard a shot up and I think that obviously they think that you'll you'll jump on that but you never knew your smarter than that. And I would think come they'll just end up sitting these cars sitting on eBay like a lot of stuff does. Without without being sold. 8030550. Is the phone number if you have a comment on that everything else related to collecting the Michael Jordan rookie has taken a big jump. A friend of mine told me that the Gretzky rookie also has I haven't noticed that and I didn't see that. And on a website that I used it to track prices I didn't see a jump in the in the Gretzky but maybe it happened a little bit earlier. Maybe you've noticed that yourself the Gretzky rookie is is a hole in my collection for sure I've never had a really nice one. Tops peachy peachy is a much bigger card than the tops card if ever. You become upon somebody who's got both. Audio PG cart is is much more words that. Lines are open for if you wanna chat I have a guest as mentioned coming up in the middle to show for a natural mention the time but. That the pitcher right to telescope beyond in the in the second segment today at around 83825. Every thirty. I I alluded to. A card from the dark days of collecting the the early ninety's that Tom has some value in this might be interesting to you. Because many many people. You have have these collections these big amounts of cards from those years and they always wanna know what to do with them. And I give them the quick bad news which is. It is very little value in it and you you probably. And you probably could do well to donate them or give them to have a youngster who might like that really not a lot of money to be made. One. Exception to that is if you have a rookie card of hall of Famer that's perfect. Bad grammar all famers and perfect the hardest. If if you have a perfect. Example. Of hall of Famer 1989199091. You know those years. You still have you have a little bit of money there now here's the trick though. To to considerate perfect. You probably need the degrade on it which means sending in a card that otherwise. You know might be worth fifty cents if that. You know spending five to ten dollars on getting a grade for that and then hoping that you get a ten. And you end up turning that into I don't know thirty boxer so the example and thinking of which I should have told you first. Is a pro set football card of John It might be 1990 I don't even know which right around there. And this John rainbow card was selling on eBay. The auction was over and I sought for 47 dollars in PSA ten. Now those pros sent cards are everywhere. But the the tough part with a great in mind is that the corners are colored. They're not port in the corners I'm sorry the borders the edges. They're not white. Bordered cards and white border cards are going to be in better condition generally. Then ones with you know that are different colors because the the caller can chip. So you have orange and purple on these different colors of those pro stick cars getting a PSA ten is no sure thing. Because of this this chipping the can happen and of course always other factors like corners and and so on so this John card was selling pretty well now what do you do if you've got a lot of these cards from those years I don't know maybe you seldom. To somebody who wants to take that chance for you and you know the they get the rewards in that case. But. That I just wanted to pass along that there is the potential. That certain cards from those years. Will do well and you know there are going to be hall of famers in in those years Brett Favre is from. From those years and I think maybe what does it action packed or some. That's and sharp what's the Favre. Rookie and who my asking what they're they're all kinds of different variations in my mind disputes modeled by all of them but you've got. And that and Randall McDaniel is another one. Marshall fall. It is another one of these guys are all from those years in the role in the football in their baseball guys to. And you know if you find those cards in great. Perfect condition than you might have something otherwise you know you you still don't unfortunately. Paul has called an and is on WGR Paul. I don't today. Yeah I got a brother mine east large collector I kinda got into it over the last few years what have. Happen here it always is my brother goal and searching grabbed and dub I think. Keep it not a ball thirty Michael Jordan. You know rookie. Cards and like that industry artificially inflate to. Also guided sit not a bunch of bombs those other people that are not a bunch of them keep Michael by its lack three like you said 950. Dollars. It artificially inflate itself. The next thing you know the industry standard that night. So it's really just a few people manipulating at all. Not being in the stock market interest and yeah I guess that makes sense. I hadn't thought that there were people with them much to be able to do that but if it's if it's ten or twelve Jordan's these are all being traded among the same people you're suggesting. Or like it'll play a vibrant I've 1516. And I got a chance that you grabbed three more those. And you know I mean all the nice goal and 3950 am talking to a dealer down in Denver. He should not oblige all the side we've manipulated the market. The sixteen that I had a fifteen and I had previous combined might lack streak at an artificially inflated inflated price. I'm get you know I'm getting the goods on fifteen an ready. makes cents or races in your brother has about thirty of them. Dirty regret that bad. Yet. The thing right and don't do I don't put the Wayne Gretzky rookie card to might spoke to when I was when abdicated on my fight I wish I didn't. Yeah I guess. Yeah I think the thing about that Jordan sat Paul is that it's those that your recent set. There's plenty of it out there but you know a lot of people didn't take basketball cards seriously at the time they did the or years were they weren't made. And so I think I think with that that the leaders that a lot of it's hidden in a few people's hands. Fluid you know that may actually think it occurred. Just just one more point this is gonna sound really trade your listeners but my Brothers already starting to grab cricket cards. From Pakistan and you see emerging populations come and into North America. From Pakistan from India. You watch it's gonna sound absurd but in one year cricket cards will be huge big and I like it you have you know thinking thinking about that the distribution among the population ethnically. did are you to thank you Paul. Soccer cricket. Well that is that's a long term vision right there I I think the Jordan point he makes you might be right. Don't just assume it's right it's not my nature to do that but I think makes sense. And I have not figured out any other better explanation for there there are there are enough people who have. Enough of those cards. That can the and they can make that kind of difference. In the prices. Interest in our 8030550. Is the number that's. To some places up for the time being is an explanation for that. Last night after the hockey game. I was just flipping around figure to be awake for another little while so I as I often do I go right to MLB network what are they doing. And at 10 o'clock last night for another half an hour was one of there twenty greatest games shows Bob Costas to number Gucci they're on them. And it was about the Kirk Gibson game. Dodgers and days and Gibson was the only guest player who was on and he was you know just. He was somewhere else like maybe with Diamondbacks or something they were interviewing him electronically. And playing. You know the ninth inning of that game talking to give senate caught a just right just the right time. Talking to him that he was talking about his day you know he woke up that morning in 1988. How we felt bad how bad he felt physically. How sure he was he wouldn't play you know Sat in the clubhouse through that game game one of the 88 World Series Dodgers a news. Listening to Vin Scully and NBC. Repeatedly say how Gibson was on available that night and Gibson. Said Howard started to burn him he is started to get mad listening to that and even though he knew he was in no shape to do it physically. He started to get warm up to the idea. Of of getting in the in the game pinch hitting at some point. So he was talking about that and Gibson I was never as a kid a Gibson fan but. Men now listening to him talk and him and tell that that story that day. He could not agree with what I like about sports any more than he does it was it was great. Watching him relive that day and he said something that. After I thought about it I I decided it was my favorite tree in an athlete. They're showing. Gibson home to bat. For that in 1988 and he's talking about. The experience. And he says that you know a lot of people ask me if I was nervous or just what I was feeling at this moment walking up to the plate. That night and and Gibson went on to say I was nervous I was so excited there's just nothing better. Then being in this this spot it's what you live for. We also thinking like what what does the guy say who did feel that way but struck out. In in that kind of a situation and how it later in life he comes to think about the the pressure of all that I wonder if it would be different but I. I shouldn't even said that that's not that's not my point the focus is on. What Gibson set about pressure he just said there's no there's no being nervous. This is what this is why you do it. There's this clip I think about NFL films from a long time ago ourselves and this is why we run all those laps. And I just I just loved it I think one thing about athletes that just is so. Awesome. Is how they in pressure like that respond to when they respond to a well and I think. For me and all I AM and I think a lot of fans are the same way this is something that sets them apart from us because. Most of us would get really nervous and not be able to function as highly as we need to. But athletes who don't and look at it that way I think that's beautiful I think that the it's it's one of the few common traits maybe not it's a common trait that the greats have. Is that they they love the pressure I think they really do I don't think it's phony I think you know they they have a it on attitude about it and Gibson. Came across that way to me and I just I just loved him for it. I decided that's my single favorite tree in an athlete is to hear that that kind of things said. And by the way his on his since this is his rookie cars are super cheap not a hall of Famer Bob what a great place in baseball history he has. 1981. Tops with a little hats. There's a Gibson cards get a jacket on the tigers and super cheap caution offering. All right. Ryan to telescope coming up a pitcher for the Washington Nationals and their organization. Was with Syracuse. Last year AAA card collector will talk to him all talked about a few things. What it's like to be a collector and a ball player at the same time they'll be plenty of time to for calls for your opinions or questions 8030550. Is the number I might show opened this is hobby on WGR. OK here is Ryan to telescope the morning Ryan nice to talk to you have my name's Mike show. Are good morning drab and you're welcome where were you these days I am. I am on the back end of it doesn't get out our driver and now Miami this in Indiana which arm problem right out side you know. We're just a sightseeing trip I know I'm my girlfriend parents live data is good so I'll while Iowa is kind of shut it down after planting a bomb and We're visiting her apparent now that I'm going to start ramping up my off season training or. During training arm and back to Indianapolis to train now with the pitching coach in America where where. Okay clear in the the nationals organization and just becoming. Familiar with you this week since Matthew got in touch with you about coming on here while Venezuela what was that like. It will a lot of fun you know it really. Prepared me you know middle and I can expect open this year I get a chance in the big you know it. And just. And you know extreme and there are so many people well it can mean weird aren't 2030000. People are you know on some night and cheering him into it there's trillion make between eight European soccer matches that. And a good college football rivalry and that was just. The band Mercury hit band were intent and the coaches the players you know. top notch I was able to play. Look such names you know are pretty good cockroach and brawn no I got. Henry go. And Carlos Gonzales so I mean you know Derek and there are a lot of big games down their Israeli and let. Very nice for you well of course the reason we're in touch with the used to talk about your collecting it says on Twitter for people who want to follow Ryan. Ryan to telescope of course would be that the handle there it says aspiring baseball card. Autograph collector how how did you what what what got you started. Congress started literally my dead you know it it was the thing that kinda bonded him and I totally I totally yeah you know Monty discussion or nearly 2% should say to Becky you know from Earth Day and of course immediately I would bet there are room in you know looked at baseball cards is that gone up and iron got about you know I baseball players and every. Every couple monsters so my dad let me Italian baseball show that would be around the be about it. Our guys I'm you know when I was younger we go to the card does look around we we couldn't afford it. Maybe I would try to bank and you know in and get to guard. Didn't have so I really. Really got into it and. I kind of stopped collecting. All college and. Does this year. Was very. Indeed indeed mean first Bowman cars so I kind of sparked my interest. What did it right away and and Cindy need gated me or how it very fortunate to deal autographs and baseball card though. You have really been able don't want them the cards and get out to my family and strand. Want to know mechanic got me back in the look like there's so to speak in credit running out of these cards like you know and not black Very nice trying to go with me here on the hobby on WGR. So what are some of your your best things are best autographs. On my best autograph. I think they have right now. Is to doubt today. World Series Jersey from the they gallery the Longoria the autocrat that got a World Series patch on it. It's. Authenticated PS DNA in it even got Adam Longoria has hologram on that I was able to work on that. Com through trade and I would give my best baseball card would be. A graded Nolan Ryan rookie card Nolan Ryan probably the one person and I collect. Just as he did. I love watching them play on TV and I was is the one purse I want to emulate whenever on the mound and though he was kind of a one card that I always try to collect it now that I collect it start ramp a little bit ease kind of the one that around. And try to come first a question back up again. That is a great card Ryan as you would know of course. Want out of his era he's to me he's the top guy for collectors mean Ryan. Obviously also had a great career needless to say but there's something extra about him he also pitched for so long so a lot. Lot of kids at different at different times along the way it would have been exposed and you know in a 22 year career something so maybe longer. So I'm really and that's the one painted I'm getting back into collecting been able to talk to some of these side and on super collectors just. Listening to you know their hundred people showed me pictures of their collection just being able. shared make new friends over you know just one player you know in kind of see what they have just talking about getting back in two in the being. Right how how well how good is your rookie card. Integrate. A good grade eight. Right now I'm you know it really good but it is currently the one that or depressed elaborate. We'll check back at an eight Ryan rookies very nice. Okay right to just go with me I'm Mike show opened this is the hobby on WGR. Ryan what kind of interest have you found that there is among baseball players in collecting. You know it kind of hit it in Ahmad. I'm not quite sure I know that. He checked. It probably super collector in the terms of you know the player world I think some people do extra actually with their own cards you know when they get released. You know sometimes the companies will give if you your own but obviously don't you go out autograph and or maybe that are the special hologram or things like that were more on the market as well you know looking because the card companies just don't. Kinda the promotional because that would take away you know from the around so we're on the market look at as well you know especially are aliens and com you know one sound usually. And outlooks or or things like that but. I think in terms just kind of collect and our players are really not quite sure but I know I know he's check is it he had that in the cart like. I've heard that too and also a couple of guys I've had on the show Dmitri Young with a famously great. Hall of fame rookie card collection. Why one of the best in existence Brad Ziegler from the days ago these on the really yeah Ziegler Diamondbacks may be. Arm he he's been on with me he is a big collector. Craig Rabach is another one although I think he might be out of baseball a player. So I'd like to find out about these guys that that are into it and of course you know. The access you have. Is so is so excellent here you are in the Washington organization what better. Organization would there be to be in for four you know if you're a collector right with Strasburg and Bryce Harper. Oh absolutely I mean you know there as soon as their cards are coming out there are being carved out by by people that they got out there. Tomorrow must you know I've played cards so bad and being able to watch them play on the field and also watching the value you know what their cars street. And what are your prospects this year Ryan you said you're open to make the big club. you know obviously that every cut every baseball player stream are much you're in the year and AAA. Eric New York with an affiliate and I'm very fortunate that the national that I did and they'll like that it kind of work on things and situations so. I think in the I'm I'm partly gonna start again as Eric Houston. Oakley at the scene and go to the I want I hope that you know the national TV champ and The nationals look better than ever right. You know what they're they're just getting better you know hopefully that. We can work got to deal copper Prince Fielder at being you know bring in that lineup would be. You know incredible and just bolster really strong. irritation and I think you know with the addition amount GO Gonzales starting look at national. You know there at that rotation going to be deadly you know and that they're able to that big bat that they wanted. and actually going to be a team to be reckoned. And I agree with that Orion maybe if if you're and you're going to be in Syracuse are spending more time there meet we will meet it's about two hours from here. And of course lots of games with buffalo and Rochester that the Syracuse. Plays every hour. And relish that not just about military is trying to plan now. On the I've enjoyed meeting you volley on Twitter hopefully my listeners will too and good luck this year. Appreciate their grammar or you're welcome to Tesco Washington. Nationals and I just abruptly cut them off without meaning to who was looking for the hold button and I hit the seal later but there sorry about that. I should apologize that was abrupt not on the air but you know behind the scenes here. very interesting baseball trade last night. Love it for the Yankees. The Yankees traded. Jesus Montero big catching prospect who did spend some time with them last year and did all right. To the Mariners for Michael Pineda there was more to the deal but neither is just I mean fears this guy right handed pitcher what do great pickup for the Yankees. I I won't I'm not on the inside when it's on the giving anything you can't get anywhere else by a lot of people. Love this trade for the Yankees to needed just huge upside for a four for him. And Montero was you know a good prospect but not like a sure thing in most minds any thoughts on this Matthew. Well the biggest thing is Montero is that he can't catch so he was probably gonna end up being DH. Which the Yankees don't really need one they have a couple players who need that DH spot give Jeter days off giving Iran days off. And they really need to fix up the rotation the sky 67260. Amazing first half. Right second half he fell off a little bit but that happens with some young pitchers when they. Throw Major League sells huge talent. Yeah yeah I think I think overall. You're getting back something better than you giving away there because there's no guarantee if if Montero becomes a catcher. And he can hit thirty home runs that's big value but he's a first baseman DH you can find those all over the place guys thirty home run. Very sneaky good move by Cashman just an NC north saw coming. A great trade for the yanks. All right some final thoughts here including one on some typing on eBay coming up call me feel like 8030550. I'm show and this is the hobby on WGR. Ryan to telescope Washington Nationals organization pitcher against him for being on. Double things I wanna get to in the last few minutes but feel free to erupts and supersede me because I'm always. I always want that eagle 30550. Is the phone number beyond this is the hobby on WGR every Saturday morning from eight to nine. Today run to the NFL playoffs start starts rather. And both teams will be on WB yen as we have the sabres tonight at the islanders pre game it's six. Saints at niners. Near record high temperatures for San Francisco on this possible mid sixties. And there's whether there are also perfect day the game tonight that I had a chance to go to I talked a little bit about it. Broncos patriots of looking at wind chills in the single digits little bit like our weather or a lot like it. Tonight for a new England and then pretty warm tomorrow the Green Bay game decent for the Baltimore game to you know mid thirties but. Nothing wacky that I read would be would be happening there. I got some last night. It's not as jargon that is losing. In in a bidding war on eBay at the last second. I've talked about my. Collecting Super Bowl MVP signed mini helmets and the right Aaron Rodgers helmet. Was sitting their last night in would be expensive. I decided with. Five seconds to go to bid eighty dollars above the leading and I got beat. I got the bid in Bristol got beat snipes are hard to. Hard to deal with. And I guess that means I should. Be one of those guys that you know you you set. A bid to go automatically right before the auction is over those are different programs you can use for that. And I don't know like maybe that's not why I lost like I did the same thing always I was watching the auction. But it's frustrating to lose that way you don't know that people are sitting by their computers bidding at the last second like you are and if you're like me feel like you know. Your superior to those people who just set a program to do their dirty work for them I was didn't like losing that Rogers it was a 200 dollar helmet a big ticket item and it had the inscription on it had the JS a certificate. I'm I'm I'm very particular about these not gonna. You know by any fakes. And I thought I had that I was bummed out here is bill on WG RI bill. out when I was younger I used you know collect cards and collect them you know every year or not put him in a shoe box and I'd like I have before choice. You know my house my little brother would always get and myself. But over the course of the years you know you're not collect them and put them up there and and I got older you know you did you really care about collecting cards anymore and I just you know let them up there and course and I want it to the army and went stationed in Korea you know about how truthful because. Home. And and just being given thought it really didn't care so that it at all anymore sibling you know. Get my card and probably up hit fairly well before choice in the attic. Yeah I was just wondering that they'd be where They sure. I'm in Korea we're talking you know these these are about a half century old these cards. There probably aren't they are very collect probably what they when we could walk up to the store and you know they won't like a nickel package and like so that checklist that check everything off tonight rubber band of not put them in. You know like old shoe boxes vitamin a poor choice so that my brother couldn't find them like a just forgot probably 62 through. Probably 68. On yeah that's that's a can be big money. if there in rubber bands. They know there are probably there's probably some damage. Older definitely damage confirming we we're always going to rule on trade numbers hold my friend because we are welcome we all had our favorite teams. let me say that and the derby there probably be some money and it if there's big money. The condition would be that the the key factor there. Like all they're not in good condition they wouldn't be worked very much them. It would be worth less but just how much less really it's it's just totally about what kind of shape the rim and yeah it's proportional so what are we get into this house. I don't know but the the request of the kind of wait for it to go up for sale but you know. For the flip rhetoric around the corner from it you might still visit it'll be old neighbors. From time to time and early mentioned that anybody else. This of this of this is puzzle a puzzle are here and whether another and it's it's it's it's definitely not your property anymore. Exactly know that the legally they're not the president not mine because you know obviously they. They're part of politics though. But if you knew with the people who live there. And you said to them look I I think there's something valuable in there that I I know where it is and you don't let's make a deal. Think about it that. What do you think about that. While maybe I'll just try that. I'll tell you all all all tell you where this is and show you how to get that it and will split the it will split the cause or the profits 5050. Maybe some like work let's interstate and let me know this plays out bill okay. All right thank you. Thought that's out what do think about that meant you better approach. I don't think he's in back. Known. I think it would be really weird if someone came to me and said hey there's Mike crap in your house from a 4050 years ago and I. Paul your floorboards and I dig in there and you know but it's just it's an alluring prospect these things sitting in there and wondering if they're still there and how much they might be worth super cool. That guy wants to write me so I can follow along in the store be thinking about them like what exact what I wanna do in that situation what would you what would you do it's a good one. Well I mean if the cut was picking up the potential cut then maybe it eleventh there the if it's my house and someone says that's a whole other matter. Minutes are what are you gonna pay for the damage. That's done that you'd pay for the repairs. Very interest in the to go lot of different ways that one. And only has Ricky bones cars. If he's got. Mean if he's got 62 in mint condition he's got big money no mint condition that's a but still there's potential there interest thing. I like that one I'll be asking my friends this weekend. What they would do in that situation hey Ryan gets left four assists last night don't get your hopes up. Have a great weekend I'm Mike show this is the hobby on WGR.

Fast and lucrative collecting -- can beat appears WG yards most avid collector Mike show.

I am kicking myself this morning. Ever do that. And the ever do that any of your any of you ever kick your -- I am I am kicking myself today I'm gonna stop -- I'm literally kicking myself because of matured during that. But here here is the reason here's what's happening. Yesterday. Finally I get around to telling bulldogs might. Weekday afternoon partner here work that you know I've waited I've put this off long enough. Go ahead you won I lost we had a bet last year on football picks you won and I agreed that I would be. Accommodation of foods that he could come up he'd he'd get to come up with as disgusting as he wanted to make it. And he went with grape nuts molasses and and show please. I was cocky about it. And very casual about it whatever go ahead I'd like all those things. By themselves there how much I really like molasses but I'm not scared of -- its sugar as I look at you know very. Just nonchalant. I enjoy movies -- about my Caesar salads not a -- pizza. I'm fine with it. Little ones he whips out this -- their huge. Great now it's great and Adam.

It it couldn't have been more disgusting and I mean in in here yesterday 630 yesterday. Eating. You know -- wanted to be. Fair about it do the right thing I agreed a meeting these big -- to this it's costing concoction of who I know I'm sorry. Early morning and here I am doing this to you by a major sick yesterday was news show I'm I'm doing it again this'll be short. The reason I -- and kicking myself is I didn't didn't occur to me at all. All yesterday. Today -- never occurred to me that that would have a smell. And that I would come back here to the studio and still -- I was sick for about three hours after leaving work by. Men like I've been more sick I've been sicker. And want to YouTube that it was just more eating it that was the worst and then for about an hour and a half after that but. I got that I got past that I even had a glass of wine list of things good. And that I coming here today an it is still stock to this room that's Mel is stuck to his room and I just hope that by Monday. When the other guys coming in that it won't be noticeable -- it is that right now and of course I'm sort of Ubuntu it. If you will and I'm just definitely. Sensing so that's that's how my days starting. I also think last week I made a big deal about I would be doing anymore light shows anymore because the football season was starting what you know here ER. That's what kicking myself to like the tape this thing before eating it while I'm hoping that some of you can -- keep -- company today since I'm here. Now looking for awards -- like the the the show alive. After the getting up really really early on a Saturday morning part I like the show alive the idea one of the the whole reasons for the show. One is to see if I can't make collecting more interest thing. And more appealing. To people who don't do it in our listeners the station that our sports fans been appointed me a lot just make you one more time yours and saying this. I have X number of friends who are into sports most of my friends -- sports fans we talk about sports replace sports. It's it's all right there but when it comes to collecting particularly cards -- more stigma. To the average guy about cards then. An autographed ball hockey stick for example. When it comes -- I can't even have a conversation with them because it's just Greek they're not into it it's a little kid hobby for them. And to me that's kind of sad I mean it's it's something that I love and I'm not ashamed of it at all quite the contrary I'm here. Advocating for. Instead of hiding under a rock somewhere sorting through 1978 baseball cards but. You know -- won here I am I like I like the idea of thinking that the show can. Can expand the hobby even if it's just you know how it happens locally I know we do have some listeners on line though. I'd like to hear if anybody can give me an update as to how that's going maybe you are collector and you have. Had good luck or bad luck with friends why do you think. Why do you think it is this way. Why why is card collecting. Look dad as something for a year olds. To do and that they can put their cards and bike spokes. And the that's one. -- baby thing I'm wrong -- to know if that's true too but my opinion is that time. Card collecting specifically cards is still by a lot of people maybe by most people seen as a hobby for kids. And you know like you and I are not we don't have frauds in our pockets right now. Maybe maybe you do I shouldn't assume I do not have -- to -- In my pocket that I am waiting to spring on you I am not. Taking out a magnifying glass. And waiting for the sun to come out like -- I'm now doing that maybe your doing that. -- If in my right street things MI right. That this is a there's a stigma here I think it's fairly obvious that you may disagree. So that's one thing. I am too I'm thinking like. Are we getting anywhere with that and that's really just more about me and -- show in my getting anywhere. Is Ernie -- view people who sort of -- collecting differently. Then and you used to I'm not sure I've really done the best job at explaining why you should. -- the fact that you know I'm sitting here but that'll -- it on the best job with that. And then there's also ultimately what we do about it. If if you are collector -- it any any hobby. Is better if you have. More people to talk about it -- mean that's a big reason why we do anything. Talking about sports cards why don't we love sports when we love the competition. And we love the atmosphere at the games or whatever we love about it we -- to gamble whatever the thing is that we love about sports. If you didn't know anybody else who loved it. How much how much less fun would it be. Be a lot less fun I think it's it's it's important to have. That kind of connection there where you can watch the game and then you can go to work the next day. Or you can go to a bar you can go anywhere the next day and share in the experience or wild time. And without that. It's it's -- it's a lot lesser of an experience the phone number is 8030550. If you're up early with me today I'd love to know your opinions on. These things collectors are we getting anywhere. Making. Collecting. More or respectable. To our friends who think world just like little kids because we're into it and for those few that are not collecting. Is there a particular turn off is there a particular reason for -- I'd like to hear from people on either side. Of the issue I wanna talk about stars in the course of this hour. Well I won't have any guest today is just gonna be you and me. But I wanna talk about stars and and here's there's two reasons for that one is that. In the course of the last few weeks I've talked about commons have talked about. Error cards have talked about you know we've talked to Brad Ziegler the days of a person who pitchers in the major leagues and collects himself. We talked about these sort of niche things within a hobby. But I'm not about stars and hear -- I've got you to open up the paper today look in the Internet and you've got Derek Jeter and Michael Jordan. Those -- the two sports stars of the day yesterday Derek Jeter setting the new Yankee hit record not a record I ever cared about before but. I guess you know. Now it's a big deal. And then I've got Michael Jordan going to the whole thing. And it it occurs to me that. I mean this isn't this is no revelation by. The stars are a huge driving force in the hobby. Tiger Jeter. LeBron. Tom Brady of these are the guys that set the bar for collecting and I wanna talk about. How I usually stay away from them mega stars Sidney Crosby's another name. I usually stay away from them -- tell you why and I'd tell you why not sure it's it's a good strategy. But if he got an opinion on that I'd love to know it or anything card or hobby related to -- airport. 803055188552550. That is or toll free number for those you listening outside the buffalo area. And I know that some of you do when I'm I'm grateful for that. Let's go to the phones Brian is here -- Brian.

Arctic and socialize our last couple months before it started it. Looked like -- ending. Year end to assert show about a couple back to -- just -- and Mike are. -- But you know just. It brought it back to -- it and did it's your point about why is it -- of more popular it's -- look at that where you know. It took me letting you know what I would look collecting cards it was all out. Be friends gone out by car then. He adds nobody could get there all the practice did you all struck here. Because something like that you it was kind of they're the hobby literally between new York and -- what you didn't -- I think you get older you -- lottery could go out -- but somebody bought back card decoder card show. And I think it altered the because of time constraint in personal commitments -- sometimes publicly that the -- that we spoke but it cockpit banks show. Beckett of the cards and all.

Thank you Brian Brian -- before you hang up if you don't mind me asking what it what do you have as you as you. Reopened the boxes. What what kinds of things do you have in what are you hoping to do with at all.

The rookie. Griffey rookie -- the upper deck the complete yeah. I'm I don't have that in the oil that's probably the course sort of like it -- my election on. Thirty year old now and I have two hours of boxes that bat that I haven't even looked at. And a lot upon but that -- the second pick up the top.

89 product you're you're just. You're at the age if you don't mind me talking like this if you're if you're thirty you're a few years younger than that. You probably got in collecting right when the hobby started to go south and that's when all the the new products came out and he ended up buying a lot of stuff that might not have much value that's just bad luck you know. But the graphic artist a great guard takes pride I take to heart which is said and I do they show. Well primarily for that reason. I want I I'd like. People who have card collections and just don't know what to do with them -- never do anything with them to sort of read. -- weekend themselves to the hobby and look go a little bit more about what it's like now. And that's why I'm happy to take your questions on it because I'm I'm kind of scatter -- like I'm always. Thinking of different things in getting distracted and changing the subject a lot of talk about -- in different things and maybe you have a question that I haven't really done a good job of answering. So I'd like I like the idea of people going Aaliyah I collected cards and I still have this box and what do I do. And you know if if you have. A small collection of cards are used to collect and you played with them and their their handled I think more often than not. Those cards will be best served just taking you back if you wanna. Open the box and look through them and remember your friends and remember buying them and organizing them and that's that's probably the most valuable thing. Many of you can get from you don't need to turn them into cash. And it will be hard to turn a car a car collection like Brian's perhaps into it in the money that really is make makes it worth doing but. The idea that you can go kind of go back in your mind and remember. What those cards meant to you when you were much younger. Is is the best part thank quickly you know is it about not having the time or is it about not having the friends to share it with. I I would say I don't know everybody's life but I would say that you know we have friends. And we do things with them but. In my case it's not card shows it's not collecting because they're not into it. And it's just about you know like may be trying to open your friends up to. Collecting. And you know for those of -- that focus on the values the cards and all of this from an investment standpoint. Well if you had a hundred friends. And you could convince all of them to buy a certain stock. And by a lot of it because they had the money to do it. You would notice an increase in the value of that stock. And I mean I'm talking about a pretty wide scale here by tongue if you had if all your friends instead of none of your friends. Work -- collectors. You know that the buzz about the hobby would be greater the prices would go up and we'd all we'd all be winners but that's not a -- I want what you think that's exactly why -- this up. -- Let's go to bill -- built.

Got here I thought I'm fine are you up are right -- epic ought all.

It's good I'm not sure I'd said yet so it's I should get that in -- the fact that I smell that. Raunchy horrible smell from yesterday's show I couldn't be better.

Make it got published well big collector and a look at. And I understand what you're talking about about this state of collecting. First look at people as well Mike there are collectors. And are not collectors bothered our horror. I also people talk about that I'll collect our camera -- that my personified. I've been collecting at -- number of years and I stopped about ten years ago start to look into your show and it looked like kind of got me fired up again -- I haven't gotten back into it big money wise but again been just been looking at you'll stop pop. You know I got -- all the way back from the seventies then you'll eat right eating crap you wrote even you know I talk to people about those kind of thing that. That I haven't and -- got their work out interesting to them but you know -- at all. Yeah I I I don't -- and.

I think. I think most of those people probably bill that again not knowing your friends the most those people probably go yeah I had itself too but my mom threw it out and the difference between you and me is only that your mom didn't throw out the stuff so what's the big war.

Lay out I was fortunate not to find out boxes up in the attic had moved to Washington DC a couple years and that's great that most of my huge collecting it. What -- and other founding if you're not collecting you know Redskins stopped you're collecting don't stop the DP and then it's about that and I literally able to build like -- and --

Yeah makes sense will appear we're looking to make a couple hundred dollars may be your -- less than that and you ready to move a patent that I'm here. That the patent is the biggest hole in my collection one of the biggest holes election. Bill somehow stopped being able to hear me. If you're just tuning and I think -- offer to buy one of bills Walter -- rookies. Got Lanny all of football hall of famers sixties and seventies but I have just never made the patent rookie work. Whether it was an eBay auction. Or cards that I would see it shows are -- shop and they're just be one little thing about it that bothered me. I just me or I've just not had the money at a certain time which that happens a lot. It's it's a card that I just never been able to. To find. So or -- to. To pull the trigger on I guess I see damages don't have I just don't have 18030550. The number thanks for the call bill and Brian before. If if you've got an opinion on this I'd love to know it if you're a collector how come it's not more popular or not. More well respected. And if you're not. Someone who collects but you're listening to the station today you'll sports whatever the case may be -- the no. What you think about it to any other collection correct questions rather are are welcome. And I do wanna talk about Jeter Jordan the stars of sports the stars of the hobby. Why -- Why not collect them whites and not do it and why did do it I think there are interesting angles to that on both sides but Jeter in Jordan the two biggest names on the sports page today. Jordan Hall of Fame induction Jeter's hit record will get into those guys after sports 8030550. The number I might show this is the hobby be right back.

I'm Mike showed welcome back to the hobby the phone number is 8030550. Those that have a question or comment about collecting. Whether it be cards or memorabilia. Of do the best I can to answer that they do have one more thing to say about. The the stigma that I perceive to exist in some of you do -- about collecting why is it not. More mainstream or more accepted. It's not like we are you know. Quite on the same level as the Star Trek thing but. An overnight in the same level was fantasy sports every body plays fantasy sports is that. So much less respectable. Right you're gonna make a team of I do it. We shouldn't say you. We make teams of real players and add up their stats and go head to head -- how much different is that. In in -- terms of just. Overall credibility -- acceptability. Than buying a box of hockey cards. I don't know it's interesting to me how things become popular or unpopular. What happened a hockey. Hockey's great here in the buffalo area and there are a lot of great hockey markets one being one of my favorite markets Canada. But you know the sport has really plummeted. In in the United States in popularity. People what happened. Certain people that. General fans put a lot of stock into stopped talking about it ESPN and gave it less respect so what that means it's less cool. You know is the sport any worse than he used to be. There's not as much fighting. All debatable. Veto 30515 the number let's bring Mike in how are you Mike.

Got a question at 8 o'clock o'clock. Without that car and I don't really know what it -- with. And Jose Canseco -- upper -- We've got a second hello -- went back. We do with what went bad -- everything it looks a trap I tell people can look at little. --

I would look at you like you're crazy but it's not it's probably not while there were air cards. All over the place Mike and some have. Really. You know hidden major value that I'm not gonna be aware of it necessarily. But if you're talking about 91 upper deck baseball anything. There's not likely to be hardly any value to it and all that that's just another product that was way over produced. So you what you what you could do if if dealers give you strange looks and that that'll tell you something. You could always what I what I recommend people do when they wanna know what things are really worth. It's not really worth what it says in a book it's not really necessarily worth what it says it is in the store one it's really worth is what people would pay for it and if you go to eBay. And search for your card if it's there. Over time you'll get an idea for what it's worth right now on eBay tonight I saw your your. Comment on hold during the break I searched Canseco error. And the -- there are three. Items up for bid and then there are lots of other items that are for sale and nothing's worked very much but made maybe you'd find your card. Maybe you wouldn't find it on any given day may be would show up in a couple of weeks. I'm just talk I'm talking and talking -- it's probably only were the couple dollars but you know I I I would recommend you do that to find out exactly.

Yeah I was and to serve both morning and got to get a case that file cabinet so cute. To -- on everything that -- why they record in all hmm. -- Well it's if it's I don't look at it and it -- I did a catalogue for insurance purposes or am currently outlook. -- was what was the from the state from 1967. -- Are about comics.

I don't know thank you Mike I don't know a lot about comics but. Of the year it's common sense with this stuff usually the year old -- A lot if you you're talking about the early nineties you're not gonna get much of a reaction you're talking about 1967. Her urine a different ball game. Let's go to Jeff next hi Jeff.

They might. -- joke thanks. My I had a question about integrating. -- I've got a couple more on integrated and they can be a level of trust issue I don't know that the popular now and I really liked it didn't go there and watch integrated into something like do you.

You can do that at the occasional show but those opportunities are few and far between the national big show in. In Cleveland over the summer PSA was there. I'd I'd bet on their website they would have list a list somewhere of appearances they make. But you know in this area don't expect him to be around here any time soon. I I understand your concern about mailing it you can send it insured. That's not too expensive. And I think they might even make you put some kind of insurance I'm not sure if they do but. I've all I can tell you Jeff on that is I've done of the few times and I've I've never had a bad. Experience sending the cards are getting them back. I'm so. I'd I'd I guess I would -- recommend you not be too uptight about it but it's -- that it's a valid concern you know once you. Send these things away union never fully know if you're going to see them again.

Absolutely channel I don't really have a stigma attached to the obvious don't really sense that you're closer to that they now and I am of course spent. I mean that in my mind it kind of like an antique weird you know kind of novelty thing work my friend and I think it's cool good in my opinion.

Good non by the know that I think it's cool. I just think that Tom. A lot of people don't really get it and don't understand or don't care to understand really what the deal is here's one thing about it I wanted to add. Coolness like I I tend to get. A little bit too preoccupied with with image and whether things are cooler not. It shouldn't matter as much as it does to me. If you feel like it you'll like it and that's the thing that matters the most on the hobby buying cards collecting them. Things like the things we talked about you know to me that I find them bond interest thing. I like the financial aspect of it. Gambling aspect of it the sports aspect of it works for me. One thing that doesn't work for me I'm not telling you -- you should be but one thing that doesn't work for me. Is. Hounding players whether it be at practice at teens in restaurants. That part of it I don't respect at all and I think there are some people who think collecting. Is really standing in line outside the arena trying to get and were telling -- to sign your program. Like to be that Sox pitchers Al -- blunt to me that Sox you know okay you wanna meet these guys fine. And I'm not say I you have to hope you do you believe me here I'm not saying it because I have access to them I really don't I find it. Problematic to be. Like any kind of activity kind of friendships with with the players so I don't have as much access as you might think it's it's only once in awhile and you know it's not somethin' right have like relationship with these guys but it some to be. To standout and lying as especially as an adult it's one thing for a kid. But if you're just trying to get you know these guys to sign stuff for you and especially when your bothering them. And I do considerate bothering them outside of their work. I don't know for the most part I'd just kind of frown on that and I think there are people who think collecting is exactly that. Collecting what are you doing your collecting what collecting autographs are getting autographs. They don't think I'm buying them on eBay they think I'm going down to the stadium and standing in the tunnel trying to get. Derrick Dockery to sign my napkin or something you know it's it's not that to me at all. It's fine if it is to you but you know we can have different opinions and mine is the that is just totally uncool. Let's go to Brian next time Brian.

Well my take I don't. I'm not too bad I've been watching you and I now want to try to destroy a altered mental home. I have I been a pretty -- collection on jagr provinces and even -- political except it just over the individual players Einstein's. You know the car today -- the cigarette and -- don't want I don't care and several buildings that these are on both sides. About the collection are you so before it's not cool. I think people the common person. -- pretty funny to get excited about it Carlos -- to autograph it and I tend until. Six and the goal right relate the -- stuff. I think I'd look at it I too little boy is put together the best such an account for them come. And I would rather just as if -- targeted -- them I'll be Jim Brown rookies. And Leo Pete rookies and forty at least in my GAO's and that sort of thing as compared to building -- on -- side -- I think there's great opportunity I think. In listening you're so much time and having never called in before I think. Some things at one point people in certain directions and inject your I would encourage undervalued. He only cards and 4756. Were at mammal experts from 6169. I think long term is -- come down a little bit just based on supply and demand.

I like I agree with that let me just interject here before -- continue I agree with that point on mental -- has this amazing status in the hobby like no other. -- all you know a lot of those man old junkies if you will will start to we'll start to die off. And I don't know that he's going to be is interest saying to people who'd never saw -- went were in the middle Lara. As other people Jackie Robinson in contrast I think you're making a lot of sense. Has more staying power he is an icon in the game for a particular reason in awaited -- is that it's not to say he was better. But it's it's different.

And they also do like passes many cards Jackie Robinson who in -- him from like 47 cities say ten years that's. -- from 51 through 69. But there's a lot of Blake's team territories are hanging on so -- every COR. There's like Edward Mandel arm in arm with bear or whatever you condoning the use of the -- hard you know I think on each person had embarked on a Muhammad Ali autograph Serbia's degraded. I kind of more -- but obviously when. He goes at some point just city's solid -- and Ted Williams. And despite also an odd people of the labeled gonna come on -- be nice to have one has.

I like I like talking you Brian thank you and budget called. The player collector obviously Brian when I was driving in the day I thought you know world what what kind of what kind of people do I. Or on what topic really like who do I wanna hear from the day it was really that I wanna do that I wanted to talk to a collector like that who. Does focus not only on players but on stars and that is really. Not because I don't understand it or don't agree with that and anyway just because that's not the collector I've -- just happens that way. It's very different than what I do but. I get that totally agree with everything you said about Robinson -- makes perfect sense no matter what his. Current health status is mean Ali is one of those very few athletes. That will just be interesting to people forever I think so I'm. Smart. 8030550. The number couple more comments on collecting stars for me. Take your calls too I might show appearance on nine states and I might show welcome back to the hobby I've got an idea for next week's show when it's only about. And also one unmistakable things about collecting. The big shots in sports Jeter Brady LeBron tiger names like that should be time. Let's get bill and first --

Are OK. I'll you know you're talking about collect the verses not collectors and 1 -- am -- going to be the brother of the one Doug or is people who died and -- played her own mind and any it was a big collector and it was you know he was -- solar Meehan. It's he put a lot of effort in to.

I hurt I heard that bill I heard that he had. What an amazing. Was it World Series programs.

has nineteen. Turner sentry. Hopped on tobacco company and stuff so those small little card that -- on -- your collections they all. It's just that it takes a lot of times you have been really very difficult so. Who navigates through. Hoops. The values that made it ratified the values in now like its stock if you buy stock listed in the paper very easy to find out. The value of -- stock you can move it. He could use these fluctuations correct -- and lecture and well that you don't see that. Right and that's why it's -- about it it's not in he would be a corporate Asia with a lot of -- And you know there's an offset if you put -- that -- something else and unfortunately. People realize that. He can't put the old days of put that card in the spokesman think it'd -- it -- value -- heroic.

That's all very true but one thing that works for cards versus stocks. Is of course they are more fun they are they are not. No just. Pieces of paper even if you ever see the pieces of paper you can read them and enjoy that I'm I'm I'm I'm quite certain your brother did that.

Slowly adding he'd turn around in the PSA and all that art collection art conventions. I know that they -- intention that want to -- on this. Last month where -- art collection out there in credit card. Collectors convention. You know it he added on schedule and unfortunately what enabled folder and you know working -- bits and pieces back from. From the fire that you know show the old -- that mean they're they're they're kind of destroyed because they're. In other earned about four but at least we able turnarounds in pieces of the old. -- got a lot before we we actually know what we -- well. But the problem is as that it. It takes a lot I mean I'm not well versed in. How established values or -- article two. Most people are right. The well know what it's called maybe there should be -- you know some security Elkhart collecting this is what chipped it in the art. In this society it what -- to do that protect our I mean. My brother always put everything he little game -- put the ticket in two that's a plastic sleep I don't doubt that. -- and I turn around it would I would folded up and put it might pocketed and next -- likely they'll operate throat and --

Well bill I I respect what you're saying very much you can. Get a price guide that can start you off you can go to eBay and see what things are selling for yes it takes time most things do. But there there are ways and I'm not sure it will it would end up being quite as complicated as you might think. But Tom I'm sure you've already done some looking in and you have a reason for saying it. So I idea I wish you luck with it I've honored that you called -- if there's anything I can do for you personally to help you with that don't hesitate to ask me. Yes Stovall and ski whose home was. Built home that was hit by the Continental Airlines flight that crashed in Clarence. As his brother here calling and tells us and I heard this was an avid collector and it's just sad story. Such a sad story just as obviously Tony means it's Eliot. They -- next week I didn't get to the the point about Jeter I just I guess I'm not the guy who collects Jeter Jordan. Or Tom Brady. Because the price is always scare me. But don't they usually hold up or -- but you can pay couple thousand dollars for a nice graded Jeter opera to ISP four year old rookie card. And much more than that for Sidney Crosby or LeBron. Those prices seemed to hold up though so you know you do that people do that. Not because they're insane. And like the Crosby went way up and has since sagged a little bit. I just don't have the discipline. To save my money for one big card like that of a guy who's playing now but. I'm not sure it's a bad way to go and of course there are collectors just of these guys -- a reason why the prices are what they are. So I'm not talking out of it I'm just trying to make a point about how that's never quite been my style as a collector. Next week I'm gonna have the plan is at least to have a couple other collectors in here with me. And we'll have a little bit of a roundtable about the hobby now what what's good what's not what we'd like to see change I would like to see. You know in the future. From from manufacturers in the hobby.
