Mike talks about Andre Reed and buyer's remorse

    jake scott found at 12:28

discovered pretty early on in the process of collecting MVPs. Is that Jake Scott . Who was the MVP of Super Bowl 74. Miami he is not an especially. -- difficult signature. I was told the beginning that he was he didn't do very many shows but guess there's there's. And a thought that he isn't as much around the Miami reunions in the does 72 Dalton. Type stuff that -- out there that he may be more difficult on that front but it seems to -- Jake Scott . Does plenty of shows. And that's all you need for -- these retired guys. Is for them to do card shows and then. Their autographs obviously with that are out there another possible misconception. Is that the old guys are tougher. I was asked recently about my collection and and I was asked will you seem to have all the old guys but not so much newer guys and that's that's exactly right. The newer guys who were still playing the Manning's Brady Aaron Rodgers . These guys don't to as many shows. And if if they do wedding. And done with that their autographs or tougher usually

    Sat, 14 Jan 2012

Hi everybody good morning it is Saturday January 14 I'm Mike show this is the hobby on WGR. I'm glad to have some baseball news two to play away. Here don't mean this this hour a insure anybody. Here up top knows. This exists so I'm pretty sure I could contrive a baseball topic by cared to and I might have when it gets cold. And across past you know the beloved bowl season. I get I get ready I'm ready for baseball February 19 for pitchers and catchers met you collar the producer of the show lined up. A professional baseball pitcher for today's show and a car collector a guy Matt knows about through a mutual friend. His name is Ryan to going pitches for Syracuse in the Washington organization. And the way I'm told is what I'm told is that he is a collector and also is someone that. Likes to try to get other people into it and that's all I that was one of the reasons for doing this a few years ago was to hopefully. And convince people that I know and mostly people but I don't just happen to be the station that collecting is still very much alive and and well. It's different than it used to be and I've. You know I think I've illustrated that almost every week through a phone call or some other thing. That I've been here since I labor day of 2008. Was our first our first show of the hobby but one thing I saw this week that was really exciting and also baffling to me. And I I'd encourage anybody who. Is in the collecting all the I don't most of our callers are are not people who. Are avid collectors now it's it may be half as around with that but people who collected along time ago wanna know what to do with things either way I would love to talk to. From people might it might have noticed this and have an opinion about it I'd be very curious to hear what you have to say. If if you track sales of cards. And you happen to track sales of the Michael Jordan. 1986. We your rookie one of the biggest cards. Of last. I don't know forty years mean certainly one of the biggest if not the biggest of the 1980s Jordan rookie. In a grade of PSA eight which common sense scale of one to 108 close to but not quite That card has sold for around 600 dollars. And I I looked up sales of this card that sold on eBay and auctions. And I happen to actually I bought two but I didn't mean to buy two which is. Happened and I sold one quickly away so say I've bought one of these cards either way it was around 600 dollars that I spent. And is something that I had thought about buying for a long time and I've I've had just sold some things I had the money needed to play with. And I bought the Jordan Carter and felt good about it all the other people like I've talked to the collect like the idea that card and why why wouldn't you. As an investment I mean it's an iconic. Sports card from the eighties and what I've noticed in the last. Two or three weeks. Is that sales of that card have shot up. It's all about 45%. In a month. And that's not just because one or two cards sold for 700 or slower 800 dollars but about a dozen of them. Mostly if not all of them on eBay. And that is a big jump for a card that I don't know it's a big card but why would that happen now. Any ideas I I don't really know are are the Charlotte Bobcats good or something. I'm kidding me that doesn't even matter. Com. What are these PSA eight Jordan sold for 999 dollars that's about a 625 dollar card that shot up like that. In in like no time at all. So. I I see something like this aren't eager to mention it because. The hobby. It's kinda like I don't need this it's like buffalo though and certain ways you know it it's a lot of a lot of a lot about the past. And how it used to be and with with collecting. As. Sure a lot of you know. Up until the mid eighties. Well in the mid eighties in the late eighties mass production started. And everybody got wind of the the notion that you could get rich through baseball cards and in turn started buying them. So pretty much by 19911992. Everybody had everything. And what happens in you know what happens in the economy to it is something. Like that it just the the bottom falls out and that's what we know that's what explains. A very simple level why. Cards from those years are all but worthless not all of the Marta got an example for you today as well. Of what kinds of cards aren't which I think might Tom be useful to many of but. We know that late eighties or early ninety's you know you've got almost nothing there. But prior to that there's still a lot of lot of money and a lot certainly. And a lot of fun to have and I think this card which is not an old card for this 1986. For a jump like that that I myself really can't explain. I'd love to tell you about it because what it what it. Also says among other things may be about Jordan or whatever. That collecting is still alive and well. And and people are throwing money like that at at at a card like this. And what what I also has happened from from this surge in the sales of Mac card is that now. You see people who do pay close attention to what things are selling for. You know dealers probably that have this card immediately go listing them on eBay for 800. Or 850 or 900 dollars because they've noticed that discard a shot up and I think that obviously they think that you'll you'll jump on that but you never knew your smarter than that. And I would think come they'll just end up sitting these cars sitting on eBay like a lot of stuff does. Without without being sold. 8030550. Is the phone number if you have a comment on that everything else related to collecting the Michael Jordan rookie has taken a big jump. A friend of mine told me that the Gretzky rookie also has I haven't noticed that and I didn't see that. And on a website that I used it to track prices I didn't see a jump in the in the Gretzky but maybe it happened a little bit earlier. Maybe you've noticed that yourself the Gretzky rookie is is a hole in my collection for sure I've never had a really nice one. Tops peachy peachy is a much bigger card than the tops card if ever. You become upon somebody who's got both. Audio PG cart is is much more words that. Lines are open for if you wanna chat I have a guest as mentioned coming up in the middle to show for a natural mention the time but. That the pitcher right to telescope beyond in the in the second segment today at around 83825. Every thirty. I I alluded to. A card from the dark days of collecting the the early ninety's that Tom has some value in this might be interesting to you. Because many many people. You have have these collections these big amounts of cards from those years and they always wanna know what to do with them. And I give them the quick bad news which is. It is very little value in it and you you probably. And you probably could do well to donate them or give them to have a youngster who might like that really not a lot of money to be made. One. Exception to that is if you have a rookie card of hall of Famer that's perfect. Bad grammar all famers and perfect the hardest. If if you have a perfect. Example. Of hall of Famer 1989199091. You know those years. You still have you have a little bit of money there now here's the trick though. To to considerate perfect. You probably need the degrade on it which means sending in a card that otherwise. You know might be worth fifty cents if that. You know spending five to ten dollars on getting a grade for that and then hoping that you get a ten. And you end up turning that into I don't know thirty boxer so the example and thinking of which I should have told you first. Is a pro set football card of John It might be 1990 I don't even know which right around there. And this John rainbow card was selling on eBay. The auction was over and I sought for 47 dollars in PSA ten. Now those pros sent cards are everywhere. But the the tough part with a great in mind is that the corners are colored. They're not port in the corners I'm sorry the borders the edges. They're not white. Bordered cards and white border cards are going to be in better condition generally. Then ones with you know that are different colors because the the caller can chip. So you have orange and purple on these different colors of those pro stick cars getting a PSA ten is no sure thing. Because of this this chipping the can happen and of course always other factors like corners and and so on so this John card was selling pretty well now what do you do if you've got a lot of these cards from those years I don't know maybe you seldom. To somebody who wants to take that chance for you and you know the they get the rewards in that case. But. That I just wanted to pass along that there is the potential. That certain cards from those years. Will do well and you know there are going to be hall of famers in in those years Brett Favre is from. From those years and I think maybe what does it action packed or some. That's and sharp what's the Favre. Rookie and who my asking what they're they're all kinds of different variations in my mind disputes modeled by all of them but you've got. And that and Randall McDaniel is another one. Marshall fall. It is another one of these guys are all from those years in the role in the football in their baseball guys to. And you know if you find those cards in great. Perfect condition than you might have something otherwise you know you you still don't unfortunately. Paul has called an and is on WGR Paul. I don't today. Yeah I got a brother mine east large collector I kinda got into it over the last few years what have. Happen here it always is my brother goal and searching grabbed and dub I think. Keep it not a ball thirty Michael Jordan. You know rookie. Cards and like that industry artificially inflate to. Also guided sit not a bunch of bombs those other people that are not a bunch of them keep Michael by its lack three like you said 950. Dollars. It artificially inflate itself. The next thing you know the industry standard that night. So it's really just a few people manipulating at all. Not being in the stock market interest and yeah I guess that makes sense. I hadn't thought that there were people with them much to be able to do that but if it's if it's ten or twelve Jordan's these are all being traded among the same people you're suggesting. Or like it'll play a vibrant I've 1516. And I got a chance that you grabbed three more those. And you know I mean all the nice goal and 3950 am talking to a dealer down in Denver. He should not oblige all the side we've manipulated the market. The sixteen that I had a fifteen and I had previous combined might lack streak at an artificially inflated inflated price. I'm get you know I'm getting the goods on fifteen an ready. makes cents or races in your brother has about thirty of them. Dirty regret that bad. Yet. The thing right and don't do I don't put the Wayne Gretzky rookie card to might spoke to when I was when abdicated on my fight I wish I didn't. Yeah I guess. Yeah I think the thing about that Jordan sat Paul is that it's those that your recent set. There's plenty of it out there but you know a lot of people didn't take basketball cards seriously at the time they did the or years were they weren't made. And so I think I think with that that the leaders that a lot of it's hidden in a few people's hands. Fluid you know that may actually think it occurred. Just just one more point this is gonna sound really trade your listeners but my Brothers already starting to grab cricket cards. From Pakistan and you see emerging populations come and into North America. From Pakistan from India. You watch it's gonna sound absurd but in one year cricket cards will be huge big and I like it you have you know thinking thinking about that the distribution among the population ethnically. did are you to thank you Paul. Soccer cricket. Well that is that's a long term vision right there I I think the Jordan point he makes you might be right. Don't just assume it's right it's not my nature to do that but I think makes sense. And I have not figured out any other better explanation for there there are there are enough people who have. Enough of those cards. That can the and they can make that kind of difference. In the prices. Interest in our 8030550. Is the number that's. To some places up for the time being is an explanation for that. Last night after the hockey game. I was just flipping around figure to be awake for another little while so I as I often do I go right to MLB network what are they doing. And at 10 o'clock last night for another half an hour was one of there twenty greatest games shows Bob Costas to number Gucci they're on them. And it was about the Kirk Gibson game. Dodgers and days and Gibson was the only guest player who was on and he was you know just. He was somewhere else like maybe with Diamondbacks or something they were interviewing him electronically. And playing. You know the ninth inning of that game talking to give senate caught a just right just the right time. Talking to him that he was talking about his day you know he woke up that morning in 1988. How we felt bad how bad he felt physically. How sure he was he wouldn't play you know Sat in the clubhouse through that game game one of the 88 World Series Dodgers a news. Listening to Vin Scully and NBC. Repeatedly say how Gibson was on available that night and Gibson. Said Howard started to burn him he is started to get mad listening to that and even though he knew he was in no shape to do it physically. He started to get warm up to the idea. Of of getting in the in the game pinch hitting at some point. So he was talking about that and Gibson I was never as a kid a Gibson fan but. Men now listening to him talk and him and tell that that story that day. He could not agree with what I like about sports any more than he does it was it was great. Watching him relive that day and he said something that. After I thought about it I I decided it was my favorite tree in an athlete. They're showing. Gibson home to bat. For that in 1988 and he's talking about. The experience. And he says that you know a lot of people ask me if I was nervous or just what I was feeling at this moment walking up to the plate. That night and and Gibson went on to say I was nervous I was so excited there's just nothing better. Then being in this this spot it's what you live for. We also thinking like what what does the guy say who did feel that way but struck out. In in that kind of a situation and how it later in life he comes to think about the the pressure of all that I wonder if it would be different but I. I shouldn't even said that that's not that's not my point the focus is on. What Gibson set about pressure he just said there's no there's no being nervous. This is what this is why you do it. There's this clip I think about NFL films from a long time ago ourselves and this is why we run all those laps. And I just I just loved it I think one thing about athletes that just is so. Awesome. Is how they in pressure like that respond to when they respond to a well and I think. For me and all I AM and I think a lot of fans are the same way this is something that sets them apart from us because. Most of us would get really nervous and not be able to function as highly as we need to. But athletes who don't and look at it that way I think that's beautiful I think that the it's it's one of the few common traits maybe not it's a common trait that the greats have. Is that they they love the pressure I think they really do I don't think it's phony I think you know they they have a it on attitude about it and Gibson. Came across that way to me and I just I just loved him for it. I decided that's my single favorite tree in an athlete is to hear that that kind of things said. And by the way his on his since this is his rookie cars are super cheap not a hall of Famer Bob what a great place in baseball history he has. 1981. Tops with a little hats. There's a Gibson cards get a jacket on the tigers and super cheap caution offering. All right. Ryan to telescope coming up a pitcher for the Washington Nationals and their organization. Was with Syracuse. Last year AAA card collector will talk to him all talked about a few things. What it's like to be a collector and a ball player at the same time they'll be plenty of time to for calls for your opinions or questions 8030550. Is the number I might show opened this is hobby on WGR. OK here is Ryan to telescope the morning Ryan nice to talk to you have my name's Mike show. Are good morning drab and you're welcome where were you these days I am. I am on the back end of it doesn't get out our driver and now Miami this in Indiana which arm problem right out side you know. We're just a sightseeing trip I know I'm my girlfriend parents live data is good so I'll while Iowa is kind of shut it down after planting a bomb and We're visiting her apparent now that I'm going to start ramping up my off season training or. During training arm and back to Indianapolis to train now with the pitching coach in America where where. Okay clear in the the nationals organization and just becoming. Familiar with you this week since Matthew got in touch with you about coming on here while Venezuela what was that like. It will a lot of fun you know it really. Prepared me you know middle and I can expect open this year I get a chance in the big you know it. And just. And you know extreme and there are so many people well it can mean weird aren't 2030000. People are you know on some night and cheering him into it there's trillion make between eight European soccer matches that. And a good college football rivalry and that was just. The band Mercury hit band were intent and the coaches the players you know. top notch I was able to play. Look such names you know are pretty good cockroach and brawn no I got. Henry go. And Carlos Gonzales so I mean you know Derek and there are a lot of big games down their Israeli and let. Very nice for you well of course the reason we're in touch with the used to talk about your collecting it says on Twitter for people who want to follow Ryan. Ryan to telescope of course would be that the handle there it says aspiring baseball card. Autograph collector how how did you what what what got you started. Congress started literally my dead you know it it was the thing that kinda bonded him and I totally I totally yeah you know Monty discussion or nearly 2% should say to Becky you know from Earth Day and of course immediately I would bet there are room in you know looked at baseball cards is that gone up and iron got about you know I baseball players and every. Every couple monsters so my dad let me Italian baseball show that would be around the be about it. Our guys I'm you know when I was younger we go to the card does look around we we couldn't afford it. Maybe I would try to bank and you know in and get to guard. Didn't have so I really. Really got into it and. I kind of stopped collecting. All college and. Does this year. Was very. Indeed indeed mean first Bowman cars so I kind of sparked my interest. What did it right away and and Cindy need gated me or how it very fortunate to deal autographs and baseball card though. You have really been able don't want them the cards and get out to my family and strand. Want to know mechanic got me back in the look like there's so to speak in credit running out of these cards like you know and not black Very nice trying to go with me here on the hobby on WGR. So what are some of your your best things are best autographs. On my best autograph. I think they have right now. Is to doubt today. World Series Jersey from the they gallery the Longoria the autocrat that got a World Series patch on it. It's. Authenticated PS DNA in it even got Adam Longoria has hologram on that I was able to work on that. Com through trade and I would give my best baseball card would be. A graded Nolan Ryan rookie card Nolan Ryan probably the one person and I collect. Just as he did. I love watching them play on TV and I was is the one purse I want to emulate whenever on the mound and though he was kind of a one card that I always try to collect it now that I collect it start ramp a little bit ease kind of the one that around. And try to come first a question back up again. That is a great card Ryan as you would know of course. Want out of his era he's to me he's the top guy for collectors mean Ryan. Obviously also had a great career needless to say but there's something extra about him he also pitched for so long so a lot. Lot of kids at different at different times along the way it would have been exposed and you know in a 22 year career something so maybe longer. So I'm really and that's the one painted I'm getting back into collecting been able to talk to some of these side and on super collectors just. Listening to you know their hundred people showed me pictures of their collection just being able. shared make new friends over you know just one player you know in kind of see what they have just talking about getting back in two in the being. Right how how well how good is your rookie card. Integrate. A good grade eight. Right now I'm you know it really good but it is currently the one that or depressed elaborate. We'll check back at an eight Ryan rookies very nice. Okay right to just go with me I'm Mike show opened this is the hobby on WGR. Ryan what kind of interest have you found that there is among baseball players in collecting. You know it kind of hit it in Ahmad. I'm not quite sure I know that. He checked. It probably super collector in the terms of you know the player world I think some people do extra actually with their own cards you know when they get released. You know sometimes the companies will give if you your own but obviously don't you go out autograph and or maybe that are the special hologram or things like that were more on the market as well you know looking because the card companies just don't. Kinda the promotional because that would take away you know from the around so we're on the market look at as well you know especially are aliens and com you know one sound usually. And outlooks or or things like that but. I think in terms just kind of collect and our players are really not quite sure but I know I know he's check is it he had that in the cart like. I've heard that too and also a couple of guys I've had on the show Dmitri Young with a famously great. Hall of fame rookie card collection. Why one of the best in existence Brad Ziegler from the days ago these on the really yeah Ziegler Diamondbacks may be. Arm he he's been on with me he is a big collector. Craig Rabach is another one although I think he might be out of baseball a player. So I'd like to find out about these guys that that are into it and of course you know. The access you have. Is so is so excellent here you are in the Washington organization what better. Organization would there be to be in for four you know if you're a collector right with Strasburg and Bryce Harper. Oh absolutely I mean you know there as soon as their cards are coming out there are being carved out by by people that they got out there. Tomorrow must you know I've played cards so bad and being able to watch them play on the field and also watching the value you know what their cars street. And what are your prospects this year Ryan you said you're open to make the big club. you know obviously that every cut every baseball player stream are much you're in the year and AAA. Eric New York with an affiliate and I'm very fortunate that the national that I did and they'll like that it kind of work on things and situations so. I think in the I'm I'm partly gonna start again as Eric Houston. Oakley at the scene and go to the I want I hope that you know the national TV champ and The nationals look better than ever right. You know what they're they're just getting better you know hopefully that. We can work got to deal copper Prince Fielder at being you know bring in that lineup would be. You know incredible and just bolster really strong. irritation and I think you know with the addition amount GO Gonzales starting look at national. You know there at that rotation going to be deadly you know and that they're able to that big bat that they wanted. and actually going to be a team to be reckoned. And I agree with that Orion maybe if if you're and you're going to be in Syracuse are spending more time there meet we will meet it's about two hours from here. And of course lots of games with buffalo and Rochester that the Syracuse. Plays every hour. And relish that not just about military is trying to plan now. On the I've enjoyed meeting you volley on Twitter hopefully my listeners will too and good luck this year. Appreciate their grammar or you're welcome to Tesco Washington. Nationals and I just abruptly cut them off without meaning to who was looking for the hold button and I hit the seal later but there sorry about that. I should apologize that was abrupt not on the air but you know behind the scenes here. very interesting baseball trade last night. Love it for the Yankees. The Yankees traded. Jesus Montero big catching prospect who did spend some time with them last year and did all right. To the Mariners for Michael Pineda there was more to the deal but neither is just I mean fears this guy right handed pitcher what do great pickup for the Yankees. I I won't I'm not on the inside when it's on the giving anything you can't get anywhere else by a lot of people. Love this trade for the Yankees to needed just huge upside for a four for him. And Montero was you know a good prospect but not like a sure thing in most minds any thoughts on this Matthew. Well the biggest thing is Montero is that he can't catch so he was probably gonna end up being DH. Which the Yankees don't really need one they have a couple players who need that DH spot give Jeter days off giving Iran days off. And they really need to fix up the rotation the sky 67260. Amazing first half. Right second half he fell off a little bit but that happens with some young pitchers when they. Throw Major League sells huge talent. Yeah yeah I think I think overall. You're getting back something better than you giving away there because there's no guarantee if if Montero becomes a catcher. And he can hit thirty home runs that's big value but he's a first baseman DH you can find those all over the place guys thirty home run. Very sneaky good move by Cashman just an NC north saw coming. A great trade for the yanks. All right some final thoughts here including one on some typing on eBay coming up call me feel like 8030550. I'm show and this is the hobby on WGR. Ryan to telescope Washington Nationals organization pitcher against him for being on. Double things I wanna get to in the last few minutes but feel free to erupts and supersede me because I'm always. I always want that eagle 30550. Is the phone number beyond this is the hobby on WGR every Saturday morning from eight to nine. Today run to the NFL playoffs start starts rather. And both teams will be on WB yen as we have the sabres tonight at the islanders pre game it's six. Saints at niners. Near record high temperatures for San Francisco on this possible mid sixties. And there's whether there are also perfect day the game tonight that I had a chance to go to I talked a little bit about it. Broncos patriots of looking at wind chills in the single digits little bit like our weather or a lot like it. Tonight for a new England and then pretty warm tomorrow the Green Bay game decent for the Baltimore game to you know mid thirties but. Nothing wacky that I read would be would be happening there. I got some last night. It's not as jargon that is losing. In in a bidding war on eBay at the last second. I've talked about my. Collecting Super Bowl MVP signed mini helmets and the right Aaron Rodgers helmet. Was sitting their last night in would be expensive. I decided with. Five seconds to go to bid eighty dollars above the leading and I got beat. I got the bid in Bristol got beat snipes are hard to. Hard to deal with. And I guess that means I should. Be one of those guys that you know you you set. A bid to go automatically right before the auction is over those are different programs you can use for that. And I don't know like maybe that's not why I lost like I did the same thing always I was watching the auction. But it's frustrating to lose that way you don't know that people are sitting by their computers bidding at the last second like you are and if you're like me feel like you know. Your superior to those people who just set a program to do their dirty work for them I was didn't like losing that Rogers it was a 200 dollar helmet a big ticket item and it had the inscription on it had the JS a certificate. I'm I'm I'm very particular about these not gonna. You know by any fakes. And I thought I had that I was bummed out here is bill on WG RI bill. out when I was younger I used you know collect cards and collect them you know every year or not put him in a shoe box and I'd like I have before choice. You know my house my little brother would always get and myself. But over the course of the years you know you're not collect them and put them up there and and I got older you know you did you really care about collecting cards anymore and I just you know let them up there and course and I want it to the army and went stationed in Korea you know about how truthful because. Home. And and just being given thought it really didn't care so that it at all anymore sibling you know. Get my card and probably up hit fairly well before choice in the attic. Yeah I was just wondering that they'd be where They sure. I'm in Korea we're talking you know these these are about a half century old these cards. There probably aren't they are very collect probably what they when we could walk up to the store and you know they won't like a nickel package and like so that checklist that check everything off tonight rubber band of not put them in. You know like old shoe boxes vitamin a poor choice so that my brother couldn't find them like a just forgot probably 62 through. Probably 68. On yeah that's that's a can be big money. if there in rubber bands. They know there are probably there's probably some damage. Older definitely damage confirming we we're always going to rule on trade numbers hold my friend because we are welcome we all had our favorite teams. let me say that and the derby there probably be some money and it if there's big money. The condition would be that the the key factor there. Like all they're not in good condition they wouldn't be worked very much them. It would be worth less but just how much less really it's it's just totally about what kind of shape the rim and yeah it's proportional so what are we get into this house. I don't know but the the request of the kind of wait for it to go up for sale but you know. For the flip rhetoric around the corner from it you might still visit it'll be old neighbors. From time to time and early mentioned that anybody else. This of this of this is puzzle a puzzle are here and whether another and it's it's it's it's definitely not your property anymore. Exactly know that the legally they're not the president not mine because you know obviously they. They're part of politics though. But if you knew with the people who live there. And you said to them look I I think there's something valuable in there that I I know where it is and you don't let's make a deal. Think about it that. What do you think about that. While maybe I'll just try that. I'll tell you all all all tell you where this is and show you how to get that it and will split the it will split the cause or the profits 5050. Maybe some like work let's interstate and let me know this plays out bill okay. All right thank you. Thought that's out what do think about that meant you better approach. I don't think he's in back. Known. I think it would be really weird if someone came to me and said hey there's Mike crap in your house from a 4050 years ago and I. Paul your floorboards and I dig in there and you know but it's just it's an alluring prospect these things sitting in there and wondering if they're still there and how much they might be worth super cool. That guy wants to write me so I can follow along in the store be thinking about them like what exact what I wanna do in that situation what would you what would you do it's a good one. Well I mean if the cut was picking up the potential cut then maybe it eleventh there the if it's my house and someone says that's a whole other matter. Minutes are what are you gonna pay for the damage. That's done that you'd pay for the repairs. Very interest in the to go lot of different ways that one. And only has Ricky bones cars. If he's got. Mean if he's got 62 in mint condition he's got big money no mint condition that's a but still there's potential there interest thing. I like that one I'll be asking my friends this weekend. What they would do in that situation hey Ryan gets left four assists last night don't get your hopes up. Have a great weekend I'm Mike show this is the hobby on WGR.

Hi everybody. Having a nice weekend so far -- to -- have you done this weekend so far let's say what I've done so far I have come into to work. For the show you can call the throughout the hour here at 8030550. PM a question about collecting may be something you have. Maybe something you want how to get it whatever the case may be I'll do my best of all tell you are given that the usual disclaimer here. Can't say exactly what whatever it is you have is worth. But I could be be points in the right direction give you some basic ideas. I talk a lot about autograph seems like -- have been lately I am not exactly an autograph collector. But I do have some autographed jerseys I mentioned this. This thing with Mario Lemieux's autograph that I'm thinking about it back and that a little bit in case you didn't hear my weekday show. -- Thursday. But I just thought this was -- in terms of autographs at least it's -- the the -- leader. At the LPGA tournament this week. In Alabama. Is in ninth grader. I can't say exactly how much women's golf I expect many -- follow but. A girl fourteen year old girl named Alexis Thompson. Is tied for first place in the LPGA. Navistar classic with Lorena Ochoa who may be the the world's top ranked women's player. She's fourteen. Figure skating maybe gymnastics share. Our gulf. So I was just thinking about that I mean I'd I'd known that story I've read about that yesterday. And then none of my way in today I'm sort of in common hobby mode driving to work and I thought about Alexis Thompson I thought. Are you getting her autograph if you're at this golf tournament probably you're trying to. And you know she's fourteen there she dot the guys with hearts. She signed her neighbor and LO well Laura. OMG after it OMG -- first exclamation point exclamation point exclamation point exclamation point. Maybe an -- so. I love the idea of Alexis Thompson a fourteen year old girl in first place at a at a women's alternate dotting the -- and Alexis with a heart though I would need that. I might if I were that that rabbit autograph collector. Inappropriate. As you might think this this could be I think I would ask her to do that. Because you don't to sports team. I think I think you would X I I would expect it. Maybe she's really protected or something but -- women's golf -- you probably could just you know have eliminated with there. After the after the around about how many people are probably at this thing. I had a an idea that day that time I'm hoping appeals to you and some of you specifically who could give me called that. Maybe have an example of this happening to you. A lot of times on the show I'm talking about great things in one's collection even perhaps my collection. Great card that I pulled. And an autographed Jersey that I have something along those lines something really big. Something really special we've taken calls from some people who have. 1990 skybox basketball and can't wait to hear them hear hear me tell them what it's worth and it's it's -- SATA -- that were almost nothing and we both go on with our lives but all the other times I've had. People call up and say that they have something really amazing remember one guy calling up telling me that he had -- there was a personal connection to. But he had an autographed ball the entire 1969. Mets team. And you know cases like that. Wallet when you're sitting on something big at people like to talk about it's easy to get that phone call for me and people like to talk about. Those things. It be easier if we were on you know. Wednesday at 430 -- Saturday at eight. But people like to talk about that so you don't have much trouble you wouldn't have much trouble getting someone into a conversation about their best piece. If they are collectors. What what's your worst piece. You can't get stuck with things. Pretty easily. And a lot of times it's it happens when you think somebody is going to be good. Or at least you hope somebody is going to be good and and they don't -- now. I'm in buffalo for those who listen online we have a lot of people on the Internet that follow the show and I'm grateful for that a lot of email I get is from out of town. And I so I tried to focus on buffalo but in in this case for one example J. P. Losman. -- a lot of people in this area most definitely have. Football's cards pictures signed by J. P. Losman. And may be wondering. What -- do with this now he's he's not on the team for the moment he's not even in the -- He's in this new fourteen legal I don't think you believe the sport teams but they call the league it's called the US -- playing and Utley. So. What do you do with your J. P. Losman autographs. Good question. I don't know I mean that that's that's a case where you could really do a lot of things with it. Right if you have. Whatever Mickey Mantle Willie Mays any great player you've got an autographed ball or autographed picture you can pretty much. Common senate's right you can pretty much tell what to do or what not to do with them put it someplace safe. Put it in a frame put it in a safe somewhere. -- do something that'll preserve the you know that the quality of it. And that will help keep it from being stolen or anything like that if you have dole. A player who just did not make it and there are a lot to those guys there are way more of those guys. What do you do. You have J. P. Losman autographed football you're throwing around your kids. So I wonder if those -- you some some of you even people who have called me and told me about these really exciting. And certainly valuable. Pieces that you acquired over the years the do you have stuff that you just know is hopelessly. Value less you you must right. I I haven't there's a guy I've only talked to once maybe twice but my sister knows him. And he was a totally distort quickly delegate calls eagle 30550 is the number you've got something that contribute here. He was at the game that. The bills played against the Houston Texans it was lost -- first start. The opener of the 2005 season and I I may have a couple details wrong here's why apologize -- do to Dennis and and two TO. But we're not what I remember of the story is my sister just happen to bring it up to me last night. He's in the crowd you know who caught GP loss means first touchdown pass. And kind of -- obscure trivia question especially your listening in in San Diego or something but. Jason Peters the linemen caught GPU Austin's first touchdown pass bills had five field goals in that game and one touchdown and that was that. And the ball ended up in the crowd. Whether Peters spiked it or he threw it the ball ended up in the crowd in this man Dennis. Got the ball like he was in the crowd and the ball came to him. Where he fought people for whatever happened. The PS the football. And he wanted to know how he could get GP loss means we'll person actually third member write his his idea was to get the ball to -- wouldn't lost and won it. Here's a first round draft pick who's who throws his first NFL touchdown pass and the idea here is that he will this will be the first of many. So maybe you would want this football may be this this man Dennis could convince J. P. Losman to trade for him. To trade for him like a Jersey or something something else. For this football and I don't know that that ever really happened I I'm pretty sure this guy still has the football. What do you do it enough but he's he's not even in the league you might wanna wait a little bit longer to see if somehow he can resurrect his career and I suppose stranger things have happened but. More than likely you're ending up with a football little -- like a football that they sell the sporting goods store no particular value. Unless you find the right if you're looking to sell it you might find the right collector. Someone who. Is a big bills collector or someone in that that's not the most obscure example but the ring is the minutes of that's an NFL game ball so I mean I could get a little bit more eclectic here but that's that's one example of all of a collection at the can be called that of a player who. You know -- out. 8030550. Those even have the big the big items autographed items -- we've got some thing that. One. Isn't really worth anything anymore or maybe really never once even though you hoped it would be someday. And and to especially -- have been hearing from you if there's a story with it like it's not just something that was given to you. Or that you open and a pack of cards like I come up that's like -- upon most of my stuff. -- may -- you have some kind of cool story that goes with your piece let's go to the phones Jeff is with -- Jeff.

And it's a market value. Under X four. -- while I collect autographs. Doctor. -- fired up within our but now what is. I expect there or. Go around like you know vocal -- options are Kamal. Or like it I -- with stating. You know. Somehow I have a couple for awhile ago with the bills and -- it a couple of years from now and -- and so well I was prepared for Cisco. Without father. You know when Ron Amadon is actually -- To. Carol. These huge William Lloyd. Yeah pull back our collective almost there. And I I went on to record like target -- its current ministers really. And I'm like and -- by chances it would reduction like very theaters goes it reactors near printers it outside and it. Sorry it's beautifully on the war. There aren't while -- barrel old law -- was a good time you'll just kinda like is break out.

pulled a lot of second are a mix you might have missed a step here is this the -- is the playoff game with green bank.

Yeah yeah I'll mind. I'm a huge packer -- I'd you know my father he recently had a chance to get the game answer Cisco is my father bought. -- In Green Bay call when they want and -- on nine and and then when an excellent web game comes up. You're your name it's what the lottery. And we have we won the lottery. For the game.

Cool so you end up you are at the stadium and you have the jerseys are at the time maybe there's more of the story but so far -- you have. The game worn jerseys or at least one game worn Jersey from their playoff game from William Floyd and Terrell Owens and Owens is autographed.

Yes okay. And I got that frame that -- you know -- William Floyd turned out to be nothing I -- body was going to be an expert. In all.

He is playing it turns out he was playing a position that was on its way out in the league and fortunately --

He's exactly. -- all the paragraph at a vote Leo but you know and our expo collectors these and -- it's -- it's -- fun for me you know I was an Ohio State couple weeks ago Friday. Like you felt Kirk -- streaker these and I I happen bill. Like who wanted to let a Starbucks would occur curb future events so. Erase certain writers need but I get those securities -- and you know that -- recollection of oregano Farina and well there.

Then Owens won and you you probably noticed if you're so avid about this that always one would be a monster. --

It's the I'm it's. You know it's gonna be -- you did yeah oh yeah it's.

It is an authenticated. Is there anyway that they've authenticated for you its use in that game with a B would do that.

Yes because on the inside of posters here at the time were the ministers. -- I every team Heather Troy. Who wear light -- remember Green Bay for that anymore right teachers. -- Cisco award he -- and then on the very bottom you know what they have like the players' sides of the actors yes. They have been -- its spin their of the innings pitched and like who they're playing right. And pitchers C number it's like and they -- reporter for workers in you know it's what -- its -- You know at the Teamsters -- sold that was. Jersey 104.

Jersey one of four but that did if you saw him after the game. That might mean that he wore the Jersey the -- gamer that doesn't even really matter.

third third script there's grass stains islanders. While. That's been. You know its that I sort of out just in its appraised and the guy who did all my you know all of their praise and out of there was an -- you know that your appraiser. Pitchers Leo moved -- He he's what -- percent would you you know and he did the framing. --

what a cool -- I mean you US help me out with William -- here but I'm just so I've taken by this other this other part of the story -- that's awesome. I would love that. I would love that and here's Owens of course right here in town. Ten years later.

Actually there -- outside to penetrate. Major working one big eyed visitors see. You know it made. He's -- call for causes the back of mergers we're excited about one. But the by Dario part of maturity. Is where all. You know support you know we're at all. Official marketing people villagers to sleep if you -- like it's -- war.

You're a good idea. Good idea I think -- minutes that's a great story while that is a great peace to. That's a good idea if you know if you know somebody who can. Who does the framing for you. The good the good ones the good people at that will always be thinking about just how to best not that it'll always be the deciding factor -- the Jersey display but it seems from what I know about it. They'll be thinking about how to best display. The Jersey to show its authenticity. Or if it's not authentic perhaps too. Hide the fact that it's not that they mean there's certain things you can do it there's a patch on the bottom. You may want the -- showing. I have a 169. It's it's replica. But it's it's a Mets GRC over Jersey that Seaver autograph. And the autograph is on the run so it is framed the catcher Torre is a guy who did the framing it's framed with a front showing. And at the bottom of the the front of the Jersey there's a patch it's his Cooperstown collection because the Jersey which I did not buy originally were ousted. I bought it second hand but this patch on it. Means two things well it sure at first means that the Jersey isn't like from 1969. Because. You know in when the Mets were playing and -- of course they -- done that a patch on mergers it's -- Cooperstown collection so it gives away. That it is not any kind of -- worn Jersey in some might think it is I would never pretend that it was. But at the same time the patch separates it from other -- you know. Mom and pop style 69 that your -- that might be out there. If if somebody wanted to receiver Jersey. This. It it makes it better than I guess I think it makes it better than just any random. Mets' 41 Jersey but it also reveals that it's not game -- so eyes the collector have a decision to make. Do I want it displayed or not. And Dave who did the job said I heard like the idea of showing it and I deferred to him but that made sense because it you know nobody thinks. If it's if you're talking about it Timor in 1969 masters you're talking about. Huge item. And I I think most people who'll come across it in my home won't won't have any question that it's not. That good so while I'm happy to have the the -- showing. Owens made the winning touchdown catch and I it's ninety. 98 or nine so was early relatively early in his career as a rookie in 96. Owens made a spectacular winning touchdown catch in that game the -- called in about. It to win that game for San Francisco after having dropped three or four passes in the game sound familiar. By the way but that's that's how -- game went for it it is a famous football game. And I am not the guy who goes down to the locker room and ask for autographs whether I have a job like this or not I just I've never felt good about doing that. But so people do and good for them in the sky made out like a bandit having done that and how about that he wasn't even looking for Owens. And it always gives it to -- right. Most got even then sorry -- has got sports just quickly even then. Most players are already thinking about the value of their stuff like they're not. Just giving away their uniforms from playoff games but to always did. -- that are right 8030550. The number I'll tell you that Mario -- thing -- up from the other day. And the got a couple other quick topics to get into would love to hear from you next I might show this is the hobby -- that.

I might show this is the hobby great to have you along this Saturday morning big sports weekend as. You know they they tend to be in October and in the fall here we've got a hockey game. Tonight in Buffalo Sabres opened their 200910. Season publisher and down with old man. Hearing a lot of old time 2009. Year old nine -- ten.

And the bills play tomorrow in Miami so it'll be a bigger sports weekend and it'll actually play home games we've got high school and college games to. I'm hearing a lot of votes -- I don't know from a to B one of those folks there is an old. But it until ten then I'm I'm got I've got all all nine. And you start saying that and big big adjustment. I got an email from a listener in Toronto about a month ago named his name is Adam. And I have. Failed might. Computer won't let me respond this email I don't know why that happens sometimes but it does so. And I'm sorry Adam wrote me about his favorite card design ever which was 88 score baseball. Real nice email. Well done well written got a little picture. And I wrote back to mom and it says -- you can't and then I'd tried again and it's ignore you can't. So I didn't want -- about their thinking I was stiffing them here I've tried out of I don't know. Let's go to Gary next -- Gary.

In my -- okay are you. Already just just a general question and -- and this. Unfortunate that because apparently at which you now. -- longer but a friend of mine what the perimeter mall. Owner was living here and playing well hello my. In refreshments one year you want that in. -- aired at the opportunity of taking certain items into the -- having teams sign. Also there was some of the matter. Special football in white here is whether -- Basically it's signed by pretty much the old seeing that the year fortunate -- years. Players like. Under read their comments are ultimately GP was under I don't recall -- only -- All implement the Internet transition that is right.

Look if you have lost -- I mean if if there was only players on the team. If you had lost when you wouldn't have Kelly he was around but it's it's probably 2003. Or or or for Losman came in 04. A -- holds was still here then but anyway.

So until the real the point of the question is is that basically had purchased for those glass cases just keep it from them. The silver marker for coming off the -- their best to retain -- autographs on the ball but that the pressure Nepal continues to deflate. Air I'm just gonna curious -- something like take out they're just keep on are popping up of course is it looks. As.

Yeah right no that's a good question. You know I would ask somebody else and we say that first I don't have any experience with -- with an autographed football. But I would say you probably could I would think you could probably take it out there -- if it's a plastic case or babies and it's the last spot. Either way you should be able to I would think. Get it out of their pretty easily. And I wouldn't think there'd be much risk in filling it back up as long as you knew what the maximum about release with a maximum pressure should be but that's that's to -- he could. You -- inept -- know what number probably could just tell. So I I think you're safe in that I think I guess the only thing I would be able to have to know what I would know about autographs in terms of protecting them is I guess is you just wanna keep model light. But that's you know what's that's a tough one right I -- you wanna display. A nice autograph and I guess the sunlight though that that -- be second be depending on what kind of Margaret is this is really not an an area of expertise for me but I think that's does best is something you hear -- to -- modeling.

Or what have what to do you Ali milieu the most kind of curious to maybe -- appraised -- haven't celebrated as you heard the conversation -- before. It is a kind of gives them a little while will be more documentation -- just -- story.

Yeah well I can help you with that for sure I would say that for the first thing you wanna do is take your time and really tried to figure out who's on the ball. How many players is it and if there are so you you might wanna take a picture of it or like a scanner something and then. -- Mark a little one next. Molds and then on the side right one Eric -- you can like. You know which which autograph belongs to who as as best you can tell. And then that'll help you look up like what year might be the more information you can go in -- the better. And you know after that in terms of grating mean. The guy with the Terrell Owens Jersey gets that authenticated because it's. It's not the kind of thing people are going to believe like. For him to have the game Warren -- Jersey that from the end of that playoff game autograph no one's going to believe him. So one that's why you get that done but with an autographed ball like that I'm not sure grating or indicating is is really worth the money. You know if you have Kelly Thurman you've got some hall of famers than maybe it's a different story but probably now like -- three bills. So but it would I if it were me I would like the idea of being able to live like exactly point out whose signature everybody. Whose whose signature was on there. It might not be possible to get everybody right. But but maybe you could. Our carrier welcome Sony picture of -- 8030550. Is the phone number Mario -- I told this on a Thursday. Because you know. Collecting sports. Cards and memorabilia and sports itself sometimes they intertwined. So Thursday I was on the -- talking about how -- Mario Lemieux's Jersey unsigned is -- Jersey that I bought a few months ago. Bases loaded you to -- we had Gypsies akin a couple of weeks ago to talk one of the owners. He ended up picking up this collection of jerseys and some jerseys were autographed like receiver that I mentioned it's actually that'll belong to a guy who's been for a moment for a long time. And some jerseys were not in more Muslim -- and I picked up. Lemieux Gretzky name it. Maybe one or two others guys not sign him not made of money here but. I bought a few jerseys of players that with the idea that some day I would get them -- And the newest one -- is doing the show in Toronto next month. And I I noticed this in a bad. In one of the back magazines. And I just thought okay here is this -- have been waiting for I haven't seen name that a show yet. I haven't seen Gretzky I am not at an appetite to. Like use work contacts or anything like that I feel really weird about that I don't wanna do with that well if it cost money I wanna pay the money's his. The song wanna do it and I'm particular about it. But Lemieux is charging. Canadian funds 329. Dollars for an autograph. And you know I'm not even talking about a guy who is in his eighties here talking about a guy who played in the eighties big difference. So I don't know like I I want this is the moment I've been waiting for. Having a chance to get -- muse sick but. 349 dollars Canadian what is that like 25260. Dollars US. -- gonna spend that so part of me thinks. Whatever who who cares what it costs -- you're going to you're not going to care. I can remember. How much it cost you just gonna have it and that's why you bought it. And have already what -- 150 dollars in or so on the Jersey it's nice to me it's an authentic. Penguins Jersey -- Timor or anything but it's it's a nice Jersey so. This is why I got -- not wearing it around. But it's 320 parks. So. Most of me says. Save your money and have it and get it done because you're not going to care one it cost. But it's the principle of 300 dollars. Now you're pushing me now you're asking a lot especially for guided. Is barely older than me I mean I think it's not how it usually works is not there's not going to necessarily -- at least a coronation. Between. Up a player's age. And his autograph some value. There is often one. But there is certainly not always one I had a a text message coming from a friend of mine the same days like welcome Eli Manning's. Autograph on a Jersey is worth -- costs three times. While it's. Why eight totals costs. Well Eli Manning I guess is in -- more demand so there it is not getting into that I'm not disputing. If if -- couldn't get 300 dollars for an autograph he would ask for. So that's the end of that but I just don't know whether wanna get into. At the same time though if I don't I've got this will be New Jersey hanging in my closet and -- no other use for it. Ideally I get an autograph the negative frame and there it is a done I've put quite a bit of money into it but that's that was the idea all -- Now. I'm not sure I was expecting to pay this much actually I'm sure that I was not one to make a quick point about a lot of the new products in the hobby I we'll get into that. After after sports and look at the clock here. One thing -- imagine this quickly at that time for one quick thing in the one thing the like desperate out with a little bit. I was at a card show in the area was it last Sunday the week before. And at our -- Mandarin to pew and nice show not realize turnout. And I was sort when my friend Gary -- from the island he's an area collectors some of urine clipping me no Gary he was telling me about these. They were from milk carton or something I apologize for not knowing that these particular early bills like early sixties. Cards if they can even be called cards. And I just I bring it up not to get specific about that -- I don't know the specifics I don't remember from having that conversation with Gary but. There is sometimes. Value in stuff like that. Don't think that if Europe. Old bill stuff or any team sixties certainly sixties and earlier sometimes seventies. Don't think that if your thing is just like caught out of a out of a milk carton Europe. Box of cupcakes. Don't think that it has to be worthless. Regular issue stuff is easier to talk about it's in the Beckett magazines you can have an easier conversation easily look up. Or on eBay C a lot of examples of certain cards and -- Nolan Ryan rookie is you -- sixty tops boom -- find out. But if you have opinions. Or. Cards like these cut out cards. Or anything I don't know magazine covers maybe -- like that mean there is a market for that. I am not your guy for how much stuff like that is worth I've never been a collector. With any interest in those kinds of things but I wanted you to know wanted this audience to go in case it didn't. That they're can be value in items like that and sometimes. Make sure you're talking to an expert because sometimes it can be big value in these little bills cut out cards he was telling me about apparently extremely rare. And very expensive. Like somebody just -- amount of milk carton in 1962. And like if you still have something like that you might have a big item on your hands but I got the -- tell you how much it's worth I just I don't know. 8030550. The number I might show more of the hobby after this. I might show and welcome back to the hobby I have at least one interview next week may be too. -- he got back in touch with Tracy tackler one of the editors at Beckett. And I did so because I have struggled here on my own to find someone to speak to. Insurance collectibles and insurance I've mentioned this on the show week or two ago. I was booking for that conversation. And Tracy knew somebody -- talk to a woman in Maryland yesterday or the day before. And her company is all about insuring collections. I wanna know for my own sake and maybe you'll be interest in this to. Just whether or not it's a good idea -- how to go about it. It's some. It's something that I I just don't wanna gets I don't get caught. I don't wanna get caught buying and buying all this stuff building this great collection and having something go wrong we have fired her house about six weeks ago. And it wasn't big and we took care to quickly but honestly if it might my wife and our outside there was no living thing inside -- for some plants you know. And like the first thing in my head is -- the stuff. And I just you know you don't want you don't wanna get get caught like that so. I've been thinking about insurance and those views that have. Want to make this point right now those who collect new cards surely have noticed this this isn't anything real new but it's been. A growing trend right now a lot of companies. Are really. Going hard into retro stuff. -- they know that a lot of pull a lot of collectors as is the case with me. By a lot of vintage vintage is a big part of the the -- of people's fascination with the hobby interest in the hobby. And with that you're seeing a lot of new products that are designed to appeal to the vintage collectors even though -- new. Good win champions. Allen in Guenter. Heritage. Tops Philadelphia football. Murat that new basketball set that there's a there's a bowl -- What is it is a Bowman said -- all the Bowman -- really are a little bit of this but there's another one that I'm blanking on the name. All these sets are supposed to look. Old fashioned and that's why -- you know they are the way they are there's there's disposed to appeal to -- so. I just think I am -- retro collector I majors -- it and I'm just here to say I got had enough -- I get it fine you want. Make it look good to two. To people who were collecting fifties and sixties -- up and try to I I respect the idea of this the manufacturers trying to find a way to halt. Collectors into something new but I think it's run its course I really do. Good win champions is okay and if you like the idea of pulling cards that have pictures of flags on them and snakes. And birds you know great as well as Carlos Beltran. Allen did sir same kind of thing it's cool but enough. Heritage. -- heritage in Philadelphia are different they are specifically designed. To look like old sets looked. And so we know it's not that different actually delegates are and and good when are also that but they're just from. A much earlier era. The -- read the basketball side. A lot a lot of these sets are supposed to look old fashioned and they do they do I think the manufacturers do a nice job with them. I just think you know that was a bad and enough already. So what do they do like I'm I'm not smart enough to give you that answer. Because that's that's a real challenge for for a manufacturers these days to say the least. The director idea has been a good one Jersey pieces has worked I think that's run its course to. I'm less and less impressed. With. A card that has embedded little tiny piece of New Jersey that they don't even really know if it was worn by a certain player in their their questions about that. And I think the thrill is gone with a lot of this stuff. For me just -- in the in the evolution my evolution as it as a collector if you're just into it you might find that supremely cool. And maybe maybe not it might grow old for you but. I'm ready for the next thing actually. I don't know what it's gonna be but I'm I'm ready for the next thing I think I'm done buying these new products that have the old look. Okay so next week when it I'm gonna talk about insurance a little bit I'll I'll make it on Korea. Not is that the most fun sounding topic is it. But I think it's an important one for people who have nice collections -- what are you prepared for if if something ends up getting lost or stolen or. Ruined somehow.
