Mike talks about Andre Reed and buyer's remorse

    jake scott found at 12:28

discovered pretty early on in the process of collecting MVPs. Is that Jake Scott . Who was the MVP of Super Bowl 74. Miami he is not an especially. -- difficult signature. I was told the beginning that he was he didn't do very many shows but guess there's there's. And a thought that he isn't as much around the Miami reunions in the does 72 Dalton. Type stuff that -- out there that he may be more difficult on that front but it seems to -- Jake Scott . Does plenty of shows. And that's all you need for -- these retired guys. Is for them to do card shows and then. Their autographs obviously with that are out there another possible misconception. Is that the old guys are tougher. I was asked recently about my collection and and I was asked will you seem to have all the old guys but not so much newer guys and that's that's exactly right. The newer guys who were still playing the Manning's Brady Aaron Rodgers . These guys don't to as many shows. And if if they do wedding. And done with that their autographs or tougher usually

Hi everybody good morning it is Saturday January 14 I'm Mike show this is the hobby on WGR. I'm glad to have some baseball news two to play away. Here don't mean this this hour a insure anybody. Here up top knows. This exists so I'm pretty sure I could contrive a baseball topic by cared to and I might have when it gets cold. And across past you know the beloved bowl season. I get I get ready I'm ready for baseball February 19 for pitchers and catchers met you collar the producer of the show lined up. A professional baseball pitcher for today's show and a car collector a guy Matt knows about through a mutual friend. His name is Ryan to going pitches for Syracuse in the Washington organization. And the way I'm told is what I'm told is that he is a collector and also is someone that. Likes to try to get other people into it and that's all I that was one of the reasons for doing this a few years ago was to hopefully. And convince people that I know and mostly people but I don't just happen to be the station that collecting is still very much alive and and well. It's different than it used to be and I've. You know I think I've illustrated that almost every week through a phone call or some other thing. That I've been here since I labor day of 2008. Was our first our first show of the hobby but one thing I saw this week that was really exciting and also baffling to me. And I I'd encourage anybody who. Is in the collecting all the I don't most of our callers are are not people who. Are avid collectors now it's it may be half as around with that but people who collected along time ago wanna know what to do with things either way I would love to talk to. From people might it might have noticed this and have an opinion about it I'd be very curious to hear what you have to say. If if you track sales of cards. And you happen to track sales of the Michael Jordan. 1986. We your rookie one of the biggest cards. Of last. I don't know forty years mean certainly one of the biggest if not the biggest of the 1980s Jordan rookie. In a grade of PSA eight which common sense scale of one to 108 close to but not quite That card has sold for around 600 dollars. And I I looked up sales of this card that sold on eBay and auctions. And I happen to actually I bought two but I didn't mean to buy two which is. Happened and I sold one quickly away so say I've bought one of these cards either way it was around 600 dollars that I spent. And is something that I had thought about buying for a long time and I've I've had just sold some things I had the money needed to play with. And I bought the Jordan Carter and felt good about it all the other people like I've talked to the collect like the idea that card and why why wouldn't you. As an investment I mean it's an iconic. Sports card from the eighties and what I've noticed in the last. Two or three weeks. Is that sales of that card have shot up. It's all about 45%. In a month. And that's not just because one or two cards sold for 700 or slower 800 dollars but about a dozen of them. Mostly if not all of them on eBay. And that is a big jump for a card that I don't know it's a big card but why would that happen now. Any ideas I I don't really know are are the Charlotte Bobcats good or something. I'm kidding me that doesn't even matter. Com. What are these PSA eight Jordan sold for 999 dollars that's about a 625 dollar card that shot up like that. In in like no time at all. So. I I see something like this aren't eager to mention it because. The hobby. It's kinda like I don't need this it's like buffalo though and certain ways you know it it's a lot of a lot of a lot about the past. And how it used to be and with with collecting. As. Sure a lot of you know. Up until the mid eighties. Well in the mid eighties in the late eighties mass production started. And everybody got wind of the the notion that you could get rich through baseball cards and in turn started buying them. So pretty much by 19911992. Everybody had everything. And what happens in you know what happens in the economy to it is something. Like that it just the the bottom falls out and that's what we know that's what explains. A very simple level why. Cards from those years are all but worthless not all of the Marta got an example for you today as well. Of what kinds of cards aren't which I think might Tom be useful to many of but. We know that late eighties or early ninety's you know you've got almost nothing there. But prior to that there's still a lot of lot of money and a lot certainly. And a lot of fun to have and I think this card which is not an old card for this 1986. For a jump like that that I myself really can't explain. I'd love to tell you about it because what it what it. Also says among other things may be about Jordan or whatever. That collecting is still alive and well. And and people are throwing money like that at at at a card like this. And what what I also has happened from from this surge in the sales of Mac card is that now. You see people who do pay close attention to what things are selling for. You know dealers probably that have this card immediately go listing them on eBay for 800. Or 850 or 900 dollars because they've noticed that discard a shot up and I think that obviously they think that you'll you'll jump on that but you never knew your smarter than that. And I would think come they'll just end up sitting these cars sitting on eBay like a lot of stuff does. Without without being sold. 8030550. Is the phone number if you have a comment on that everything else related to collecting the Michael Jordan rookie has taken a big jump. A friend of mine told me that the Gretzky rookie also has I haven't noticed that and I didn't see that. And on a website that I used it to track prices I didn't see a jump in the in the Gretzky but maybe it happened a little bit earlier. Maybe you've noticed that yourself the Gretzky rookie is is a hole in my collection for sure I've never had a really nice one. Tops peachy peachy is a much bigger card than the tops card if ever. You become upon somebody who's got both. Audio PG cart is is much more words that. Lines are open for if you wanna chat I have a guest as mentioned coming up in the middle to show for a natural mention the time but. That the pitcher right to telescope beyond in the in the second segment today at around 83825. Every thirty. I I alluded to. A card from the dark days of collecting the the early ninety's that Tom has some value in this might be interesting to you. Because many many people. You have have these collections these big amounts of cards from those years and they always wanna know what to do with them. And I give them the quick bad news which is. It is very little value in it and you you probably. And you probably could do well to donate them or give them to have a youngster who might like that really not a lot of money to be made. One. Exception to that is if you have a rookie card of hall of Famer that's perfect. Bad grammar all famers and perfect the hardest. If if you have a perfect. Example. Of hall of Famer 1989199091. You know those years. You still have you have a little bit of money there now here's the trick though. To to considerate perfect. You probably need the degrade on it which means sending in a card that otherwise. You know might be worth fifty cents if that. You know spending five to ten dollars on getting a grade for that and then hoping that you get a ten. And you end up turning that into I don't know thirty boxer so the example and thinking of which I should have told you first. Is a pro set football card of John It might be 1990 I don't even know which right around there. And this John rainbow card was selling on eBay. The auction was over and I sought for 47 dollars in PSA ten. Now those pros sent cards are everywhere. But the the tough part with a great in mind is that the corners are colored. They're not port in the corners I'm sorry the borders the edges. They're not white. Bordered cards and white border cards are going to be in better condition generally. Then ones with you know that are different colors because the the caller can chip. So you have orange and purple on these different colors of those pro stick cars getting a PSA ten is no sure thing. Because of this this chipping the can happen and of course always other factors like corners and and so on so this John card was selling pretty well now what do you do if you've got a lot of these cards from those years I don't know maybe you seldom. To somebody who wants to take that chance for you and you know the they get the rewards in that case. But. That I just wanted to pass along that there is the potential. That certain cards from those years. Will do well and you know there are going to be hall of famers in in those years Brett Favre is from. From those years and I think maybe what does it action packed or some. That's and sharp what's the Favre. Rookie and who my asking what they're they're all kinds of different variations in my mind disputes modeled by all of them but you've got. And that and Randall McDaniel is another one. Marshall fall. It is another one of these guys are all from those years in the role in the football in their baseball guys to. And you know if you find those cards in great. Perfect condition than you might have something otherwise you know you you still don't unfortunately. Paul has called an and is on WGR Paul. I don't today. Yeah I got a brother mine east large collector I kinda got into it over the last few years what have. Happen here it always is my brother goal and searching grabbed and dub I think. Keep it not a ball thirty Michael Jordan. You know rookie. Cards and like that industry artificially inflate to. Also guided sit not a bunch of bombs those other people that are not a bunch of them keep Michael by its lack three like you said 950. Dollars. It artificially inflate itself. The next thing you know the industry standard that night. So it's really just a few people manipulating at all. Not being in the stock market interest and yeah I guess that makes sense. I hadn't thought that there were people with them much to be able to do that but if it's if it's ten or twelve Jordan's these are all being traded among the same people you're suggesting. Or like it'll play a vibrant I've 1516. And I got a chance that you grabbed three more those. And you know I mean all the nice goal and 3950 am talking to a dealer down in Denver. He should not oblige all the side we've manipulated the market. The sixteen that I had a fifteen and I had previous combined might lack streak at an artificially inflated inflated price. I'm get you know I'm getting the goods on fifteen an ready. makes cents or races in your brother has about thirty of them. Dirty regret that bad. Yet. The thing right and don't do I don't put the Wayne Gretzky rookie card to might spoke to when I was when abdicated on my fight I wish I didn't. Yeah I guess. Yeah I think the thing about that Jordan sat Paul is that it's those that your recent set. There's plenty of it out there but you know a lot of people didn't take basketball cards seriously at the time they did the or years were they weren't made. And so I think I think with that that the leaders that a lot of it's hidden in a few people's hands. Fluid you know that may actually think it occurred. Just just one more point this is gonna sound really trade your listeners but my Brothers already starting to grab cricket cards. From Pakistan and you see emerging populations come and into North America. From Pakistan from India. You watch it's gonna sound absurd but in one year cricket cards will be huge big and I like it you have you know thinking thinking about that the distribution among the population ethnically. did are you to thank you Paul. Soccer cricket. Well that is that's a long term vision right there I I think the Jordan point he makes you might be right. Don't just assume it's right it's not my nature to do that but I think makes sense. And I have not figured out any other better explanation for there there are there are enough people who have. Enough of those cards. That can the and they can make that kind of difference. In the prices. Interest in our 8030550. Is the number that's. To some places up for the time being is an explanation for that. Last night after the hockey game. I was just flipping around figure to be awake for another little while so I as I often do I go right to MLB network what are they doing. And at 10 o'clock last night for another half an hour was one of there twenty greatest games shows Bob Costas to number Gucci they're on them. And it was about the Kirk Gibson game. Dodgers and days and Gibson was the only guest player who was on and he was you know just. He was somewhere else like maybe with Diamondbacks or something they were interviewing him electronically. And playing. You know the ninth inning of that game talking to give senate caught a just right just the right time. Talking to him that he was talking about his day you know he woke up that morning in 1988. How we felt bad how bad he felt physically. How sure he was he wouldn't play you know Sat in the clubhouse through that game game one of the 88 World Series Dodgers a news. Listening to Vin Scully and NBC. Repeatedly say how Gibson was on available that night and Gibson. Said Howard started to burn him he is started to get mad listening to that and even though he knew he was in no shape to do it physically. He started to get warm up to the idea. Of of getting in the in the game pinch hitting at some point. So he was talking about that and Gibson I was never as a kid a Gibson fan but. Men now listening to him talk and him and tell that that story that day. He could not agree with what I like about sports any more than he does it was it was great. Watching him relive that day and he said something that. After I thought about it I I decided it was my favorite tree in an athlete. They're showing. Gibson home to bat. For that in 1988 and he's talking about. The experience. And he says that you know a lot of people ask me if I was nervous or just what I was feeling at this moment walking up to the plate. That night and and Gibson went on to say I was nervous I was so excited there's just nothing better. Then being in this this spot it's what you live for. We also thinking like what what does the guy say who did feel that way but struck out. In in that kind of a situation and how it later in life he comes to think about the the pressure of all that I wonder if it would be different but I. I shouldn't even said that that's not that's not my point the focus is on. What Gibson set about pressure he just said there's no there's no being nervous. This is what this is why you do it. There's this clip I think about NFL films from a long time ago ourselves and this is why we run all those laps. And I just I just loved it I think one thing about athletes that just is so. Awesome. Is how they in pressure like that respond to when they respond to a well and I think. For me and all I AM and I think a lot of fans are the same way this is something that sets them apart from us because. Most of us would get really nervous and not be able to function as highly as we need to. But athletes who don't and look at it that way I think that's beautiful I think that the it's it's one of the few common traits maybe not it's a common trait that the greats have. Is that they they love the pressure I think they really do I don't think it's phony I think you know they they have a it on attitude about it and Gibson. Came across that way to me and I just I just loved him for it. I decided that's my single favorite tree in an athlete is to hear that that kind of things said. And by the way his on his since this is his rookie cars are super cheap not a hall of Famer Bob what a great place in baseball history he has. 1981. Tops with a little hats. There's a Gibson cards get a jacket on the tigers and super cheap caution offering. All right. Ryan to telescope coming up a pitcher for the Washington Nationals and their organization. Was with Syracuse. Last year AAA card collector will talk to him all talked about a few things. What it's like to be a collector and a ball player at the same time they'll be plenty of time to for calls for your opinions or questions 8030550. Is the number I might show opened this is hobby on WGR. OK here is Ryan to telescope the morning Ryan nice to talk to you have my name's Mike show. Are good morning drab and you're welcome where were you these days I am. I am on the back end of it doesn't get out our driver and now Miami this in Indiana which arm problem right out side you know. We're just a sightseeing trip I know I'm my girlfriend parents live data is good so I'll while Iowa is kind of shut it down after planting a bomb and We're visiting her apparent now that I'm going to start ramping up my off season training or. During training arm and back to Indianapolis to train now with the pitching coach in America where where. Okay clear in the the nationals organization and just becoming. Familiar with you this week since Matthew got in touch with you about coming on here while Venezuela what was that like. It will a lot of fun you know it really. Prepared me you know middle and I can expect open this year I get a chance in the big you know it. And just. And you know extreme and there are so many people well it can mean weird aren't 2030000. People are you know on some night and cheering him into it there's trillion make between eight European soccer matches that. And a good college football rivalry and that was just. The band Mercury hit band were intent and the coaches the players you know. top notch I was able to play. Look such names you know are pretty good cockroach and brawn no I got. Henry go. And Carlos Gonzales so I mean you know Derek and there are a lot of big games down their Israeli and let. Very nice for you well of course the reason we're in touch with the used to talk about your collecting it says on Twitter for people who want to follow Ryan. Ryan to telescope of course would be that the handle there it says aspiring baseball card. Autograph collector how how did you what what what got you started. Congress started literally my dead you know it it was the thing that kinda bonded him and I totally I totally yeah you know Monty discussion or nearly 2% should say to Becky you know from Earth Day and of course immediately I would bet there are room in you know looked at baseball cards is that gone up and iron got about you know I baseball players and every. Every couple monsters so my dad let me Italian baseball show that would be around the be about it. Our guys I'm you know when I was younger we go to the card does look around we we couldn't afford it. Maybe I would try to bank and you know in and get to guard. Didn't have so I really. Really got into it and. I kind of stopped collecting. All college and. Does this year. Was very. Indeed indeed mean first Bowman cars so I kind of sparked my interest. What did it right away and and Cindy need gated me or how it very fortunate to deal autographs and baseball card though. You have really been able don't want them the cards and get out to my family and strand. Want to know mechanic got me back in the look like there's so to speak in credit running out of these cards like you know and not black Very nice trying to go with me here on the hobby on WGR. So what are some of your your best things are best autographs. On my best autograph. I think they have right now. Is to doubt today. World Series Jersey from the they gallery the Longoria the autocrat that got a World Series patch on it. It's. Authenticated PS DNA in it even got Adam Longoria has hologram on that I was able to work on that. Com through trade and I would give my best baseball card would be. A graded Nolan Ryan rookie card Nolan Ryan probably the one person and I collect. Just as he did. I love watching them play on TV and I was is the one purse I want to emulate whenever on the mound and though he was kind of a one card that I always try to collect it now that I collect it start ramp a little bit ease kind of the one that around. And try to come first a question back up again. That is a great card Ryan as you would know of course. Want out of his era he's to me he's the top guy for collectors mean Ryan. Obviously also had a great career needless to say but there's something extra about him he also pitched for so long so a lot. Lot of kids at different at different times along the way it would have been exposed and you know in a 22 year career something so maybe longer. So I'm really and that's the one painted I'm getting back into collecting been able to talk to some of these side and on super collectors just. Listening to you know their hundred people showed me pictures of their collection just being able. shared make new friends over you know just one player you know in kind of see what they have just talking about getting back in two in the being. Right how how well how good is your rookie card. Integrate. A good grade eight. Right now I'm you know it really good but it is currently the one that or depressed elaborate. We'll check back at an eight Ryan rookies very nice. Okay right to just go with me I'm Mike show opened this is the hobby on WGR. Ryan what kind of interest have you found that there is among baseball players in collecting. You know it kind of hit it in Ahmad. I'm not quite sure I know that. He checked. It probably super collector in the terms of you know the player world I think some people do extra actually with their own cards you know when they get released. You know sometimes the companies will give if you your own but obviously don't you go out autograph and or maybe that are the special hologram or things like that were more on the market as well you know looking because the card companies just don't. Kinda the promotional because that would take away you know from the around so we're on the market look at as well you know especially are aliens and com you know one sound usually. And outlooks or or things like that but. I think in terms just kind of collect and our players are really not quite sure but I know I know he's check is it he had that in the cart like. I've heard that too and also a couple of guys I've had on the show Dmitri Young with a famously great. Hall of fame rookie card collection. Why one of the best in existence Brad Ziegler from the days ago these on the really yeah Ziegler Diamondbacks may be. Arm he he's been on with me he is a big collector. Craig Rabach is another one although I think he might be out of baseball a player. So I'd like to find out about these guys that that are into it and of course you know. The access you have. Is so is so excellent here you are in the Washington organization what better. Organization would there be to be in for four you know if you're a collector right with Strasburg and Bryce Harper. Oh absolutely I mean you know there as soon as their cards are coming out there are being carved out by by people that they got out there. Tomorrow must you know I've played cards so bad and being able to watch them play on the field and also watching the value you know what their cars street. And what are your prospects this year Ryan you said you're open to make the big club. you know obviously that every cut every baseball player stream are much you're in the year and AAA. Eric New York with an affiliate and I'm very fortunate that the national that I did and they'll like that it kind of work on things and situations so. I think in the I'm I'm partly gonna start again as Eric Houston. Oakley at the scene and go to the I want I hope that you know the national TV champ and The nationals look better than ever right. You know what they're they're just getting better you know hopefully that. We can work got to deal copper Prince Fielder at being you know bring in that lineup would be. You know incredible and just bolster really strong. irritation and I think you know with the addition amount GO Gonzales starting look at national. You know there at that rotation going to be deadly you know and that they're able to that big bat that they wanted. and actually going to be a team to be reckoned. And I agree with that Orion maybe if if you're and you're going to be in Syracuse are spending more time there meet we will meet it's about two hours from here. And of course lots of games with buffalo and Rochester that the Syracuse. Plays every hour. And relish that not just about military is trying to plan now. On the I've enjoyed meeting you volley on Twitter hopefully my listeners will too and good luck this year. Appreciate their grammar or you're welcome to Tesco Washington. Nationals and I just abruptly cut them off without meaning to who was looking for the hold button and I hit the seal later but there sorry about that. I should apologize that was abrupt not on the air but you know behind the scenes here. very interesting baseball trade last night. Love it for the Yankees. The Yankees traded. Jesus Montero big catching prospect who did spend some time with them last year and did all right. To the Mariners for Michael Pineda there was more to the deal but neither is just I mean fears this guy right handed pitcher what do great pickup for the Yankees. I I won't I'm not on the inside when it's on the giving anything you can't get anywhere else by a lot of people. Love this trade for the Yankees to needed just huge upside for a four for him. And Montero was you know a good prospect but not like a sure thing in most minds any thoughts on this Matthew. Well the biggest thing is Montero is that he can't catch so he was probably gonna end up being DH. Which the Yankees don't really need one they have a couple players who need that DH spot give Jeter days off giving Iran days off. And they really need to fix up the rotation the sky 67260. Amazing first half. Right second half he fell off a little bit but that happens with some young pitchers when they. Throw Major League sells huge talent. Yeah yeah I think I think overall. You're getting back something better than you giving away there because there's no guarantee if if Montero becomes a catcher. And he can hit thirty home runs that's big value but he's a first baseman DH you can find those all over the place guys thirty home run. Very sneaky good move by Cashman just an NC north saw coming. A great trade for the yanks. All right some final thoughts here including one on some typing on eBay coming up call me feel like 8030550. I'm show and this is the hobby on WGR. Ryan to telescope Washington Nationals organization pitcher against him for being on. Double things I wanna get to in the last few minutes but feel free to erupts and supersede me because I'm always. I always want that eagle 30550. Is the phone number beyond this is the hobby on WGR every Saturday morning from eight to nine. Today run to the NFL playoffs start starts rather. And both teams will be on WB yen as we have the sabres tonight at the islanders pre game it's six. Saints at niners. Near record high temperatures for San Francisco on this possible mid sixties. And there's whether there are also perfect day the game tonight that I had a chance to go to I talked a little bit about it. Broncos patriots of looking at wind chills in the single digits little bit like our weather or a lot like it. Tonight for a new England and then pretty warm tomorrow the Green Bay game decent for the Baltimore game to you know mid thirties but. Nothing wacky that I read would be would be happening there. I got some last night. It's not as jargon that is losing. In in a bidding war on eBay at the last second. I've talked about my. Collecting Super Bowl MVP signed mini helmets and the right Aaron Rodgers helmet. Was sitting their last night in would be expensive. I decided with. Five seconds to go to bid eighty dollars above the leading and I got beat. I got the bid in Bristol got beat snipes are hard to. Hard to deal with. And I guess that means I should. Be one of those guys that you know you you set. A bid to go automatically right before the auction is over those are different programs you can use for that. And I don't know like maybe that's not why I lost like I did the same thing always I was watching the auction. But it's frustrating to lose that way you don't know that people are sitting by their computers bidding at the last second like you are and if you're like me feel like you know. Your superior to those people who just set a program to do their dirty work for them I was didn't like losing that Rogers it was a 200 dollar helmet a big ticket item and it had the inscription on it had the JS a certificate. I'm I'm I'm very particular about these not gonna. You know by any fakes. And I thought I had that I was bummed out here is bill on WG RI bill. out when I was younger I used you know collect cards and collect them you know every year or not put him in a shoe box and I'd like I have before choice. You know my house my little brother would always get and myself. But over the course of the years you know you're not collect them and put them up there and and I got older you know you did you really care about collecting cards anymore and I just you know let them up there and course and I want it to the army and went stationed in Korea you know about how truthful because. Home. And and just being given thought it really didn't care so that it at all anymore sibling you know. Get my card and probably up hit fairly well before choice in the attic. Yeah I was just wondering that they'd be where They sure. I'm in Korea we're talking you know these these are about a half century old these cards. There probably aren't they are very collect probably what they when we could walk up to the store and you know they won't like a nickel package and like so that checklist that check everything off tonight rubber band of not put them in. You know like old shoe boxes vitamin a poor choice so that my brother couldn't find them like a just forgot probably 62 through. Probably 68. On yeah that's that's a can be big money. if there in rubber bands. They know there are probably there's probably some damage. Older definitely damage confirming we we're always going to rule on trade numbers hold my friend because we are welcome we all had our favorite teams. let me say that and the derby there probably be some money and it if there's big money. The condition would be that the the key factor there. Like all they're not in good condition they wouldn't be worked very much them. It would be worth less but just how much less really it's it's just totally about what kind of shape the rim and yeah it's proportional so what are we get into this house. I don't know but the the request of the kind of wait for it to go up for sale but you know. For the flip rhetoric around the corner from it you might still visit it'll be old neighbors. From time to time and early mentioned that anybody else. This of this of this is puzzle a puzzle are here and whether another and it's it's it's it's definitely not your property anymore. Exactly know that the legally they're not the president not mine because you know obviously they. They're part of politics though. But if you knew with the people who live there. And you said to them look I I think there's something valuable in there that I I know where it is and you don't let's make a deal. Think about it that. What do you think about that. While maybe I'll just try that. I'll tell you all all all tell you where this is and show you how to get that it and will split the it will split the cause or the profits 5050. Maybe some like work let's interstate and let me know this plays out bill okay. All right thank you. Thought that's out what do think about that meant you better approach. I don't think he's in back. Known. I think it would be really weird if someone came to me and said hey there's Mike crap in your house from a 4050 years ago and I. Paul your floorboards and I dig in there and you know but it's just it's an alluring prospect these things sitting in there and wondering if they're still there and how much they might be worth super cool. That guy wants to write me so I can follow along in the store be thinking about them like what exact what I wanna do in that situation what would you what would you do it's a good one. Well I mean if the cut was picking up the potential cut then maybe it eleventh there the if it's my house and someone says that's a whole other matter. Minutes are what are you gonna pay for the damage. That's done that you'd pay for the repairs. Very interest in the to go lot of different ways that one. And only has Ricky bones cars. If he's got. Mean if he's got 62 in mint condition he's got big money no mint condition that's a but still there's potential there interest thing. I like that one I'll be asking my friends this weekend. What they would do in that situation hey Ryan gets left four assists last night don't get your hopes up. Have a great weekend I'm Mike show this is the hobby on WGR.

Season coming up in the first segment though we will talk to and -- Leo. Who is. Founder of remember the AFL dot com when I was coming up with my show theme for this. Weekend in Mike gets me to fill -- form I was going over different topics and differing ideas I might have and this one came to me right away. Just getting back in a football now from the World Series and the baseball season that was. And -- coming up in just a few moments will be joined by and connect Leo. Remember the AFL dot com. Pat -- Powell along with you this morning as Mike show as the morning off here on the hobby. And right now we will bring in and -- Leo. From remember the AFL dot com and good morning and thanks for joining us on the program. Later. I just telling the listeners hear you have an interesting website remember the AFL dot com and when I was coming up with the show theme for today. I thought. The fiftieth anniversary the NFL would be perfect. And it was one website my mind that I saw on the lab before the season started I set. I have to figure out what website that is and it's yours it's an incredible website and fans really need to check it out. Thank you. Art and should I -- will start before we get into the history the AFL and now some of that the merger talks of that. How did you get interested in the AFL besides just the bills being in this new week.

Well -- I've been a football fan ever since it was ten years old. He's. What -- you all American football conference games is that build participated in this league or team named the build participating in -- It's folded. Went from making 46 to 1950. And then. The -- team was the disbanded. Bill we've worked teams. -- to the NFL. So we were both professional football buffalo forward -- and years I have you know what you Cleveland Browns and local television. And the way and I found out that this. The AFL was the -- it was through a franchise and buffalo I was so thrilled but these tickets. And if you weren't around at that time you couldn't appreciate. The intense rivalry between two weeks. The NFL thought the if social and existed. Did everything it could do to destroy the AFL. It to demean the AFL. And it was one of those things where -- That only were the bills might seem. But the teams in the if so were were you know they were Miley was my -- And that and that was true of many many American Football League France and so it became that it just a fan of the -- but of the league is well.

And there were eight original teams in the AFL. That day. The Texans moved to Kansas City and yet the Oilers moving to it Tennessee but. And there's did the original eight franchised themselves are still on the NFL today somewhat 35 of forty years later.

As a matter of fact that this is one of the reasons I always played against realignment. -- the western. The western division of the American football conference is is what was the western division of the American football week. The eastern division of the American football conference. Is what was the eastern division of the American Football League. The only exceptions those whose Houston used to be and if the -- the eastern division. And Cincinnati used to be in the western division. So. The really group those those two divisions that are are still sort of like the many AFL -- cited the National Football League.

And that was one of the reasons I was going over to show for today in the bills in the AFC east played the AFC west last season and it if things had a line a little better we can have basically seen AFL. And -- fiftieth anniversary all season long between.

That's correct -- so you know I started pushing for this celebrations several years ago. And I was I'm hoping that they would of the they've -- essentially. You know every former AFL team play every former. Every other former have -- team they didn't work but they are having these legacy games is here which. Quite excited to be -- the team's. In. 1960s uniforms to see the -- for reasons red stripes. It looks like they look like AFL game.

Now -- that the -- was gone fifteen years before I was born but. I mean just seeing that the bills uniforms even the charters and it is that's takes you back to it to the days of the -- well.

There's no question. You know a younger fans apparently it seems -- younger fans don't like. Lively colors for whatever reason I don't know is that may have -- considered manly or what the problem is. But almost every team today is his you'd hit a black -- you're -- caller that's -- almost looks like black. Those jerseys whose uniform -- the raiders they knew they were black but. The other team did did uniforms so we're very colorful. That it is exciting to see them played there in those uniforms again.

While engine not to count me and and that group because I I have a bills ample throwback to that the blue Jersey at the -- warned for years had to do one of the whites -- now just this week. -- get one of the San Diego or LA chargers. Drove actors as well I should make that distinction there. So and let's get to some of the innovations the league brought forth because fans my age might not know that. A lot of the things we -- today in the NFL were brought about by the AFL.

No wonder what that one very simple things do is is the clock on the scoreboard. Believe it or that you do if NFL games. Prior to 1960 empire today prior to that time they change over to copy the AFL. There was no official clock. On the scoreboard. Affairs did not know what to look how much time was remaining in the game and it was kept you know on a stopwatch in the open referees packets. Do there was a general time up there you know there's -- there's about ten minutes left but he did know the exact time -- got down to the two minute warning you did know the exact kind you know when you were fortunate to order. You don't know when you were approaching the end of both of books have. For the game and those rip the referee would everyone's well pollute. Total lack jet black wouldn't say it is you know 1133. Left in the game. So they'd be introduced -- the scoreboard lack of official black. They introduced to professional football with the two point conversion which. The NFL disdain for many years and then finally in 1984 I think you know fourteen years after the merger. The the included that these. The two point conversion. Names in the backs of players' jerseys. Were. They have felt the nation. Revenue sharing believe that are back. A buzzword these -- innovation where. The visiting teams shared the the home. Gates and -- shared equally in the television revenues the NFL did not do that. Until. Give the American football we just came came about.

And revenue sharing still one of the big topics in football to -- stay on speaking with and clinically -- of remember the AFL and here on the hobby it's 812 panel -- along with you and and on. You got involved in the showtime documentary full color football a five part series about the AFL tell me how that -- about.

But well. I was at stake is valued. NFL films. Early this spring. And they asked the that they were basically looking for a film clips in the items that they could use in the in this show. -- anonymity so he puts as such but he got a lot of a lot of memorabilia. And they indicated they were considerably trail road vehicles cities and and visit me. The problem months later I found out true friend of mine -- state dealt wrote the book remember the AFL an excellent book. That he had been two -- world to be interviewed. And -- people leave within the they -- but we're not planning on coming back the buffalo and more like problem in effect force myself I'm a sensitive. I can -- on the mount laurel I couldn't do better view. I told my friend David be damned if there wouldn't do Astoria -- felt it was going to be included.

And I I think the -- better for because everyone I've talked to. As is said and everyone I told those talking to today -- all is is he the guy is he the guy that at this through better whatever and one of those things is the AFL ten patched. That was one by the chiefs in the Super Bowl and and in many fans might I know that you had to spur that along you inject count.

Well. Again did in the 195 nineteen. I'm sorry 1969. Was the fiftieth anniversary of the National Football League. And the entire season every -- every player and every -- was the National Football League. Work actually it says fifty NFL. And again because food that's rebel group that felt towards the end result. I felt that this is it was the last season of the AFL the approach toward a pinch. They never did during the season but I kept pressing ready to Lamar -- ready to -- what are the commissioner via our president. Of the AFL. And -- could have picked up the ball room wrote to Pete Rose though. And eventually they agreed to produce their pets we know we are actually weak and their team. The -- only work in in one game lose the last game. Played by -- and -- by the AFL team that was the suitable for.

I'm speaking -- and take Leo here on the hobby it's a fifteen pat Alec -- with you and we're talking about. The fiftieth anniversary of the NFL and Andy's website remember the AFL dot com and and when the first things you see when you go to your website. -- of the game day programs from the first three days of the AFL is are these all things the you have in your possession.

I know some of them I don't have any of those particular ones but I do live. Many. Game day programs. Bit of that was developing there was a lot more colorful but these about the AFL if you look at those programs they -- the last of them had that cover art. Or color photos. And they were very colorful. They also. Were more teams specific. If you -- a program but it's stories that they of the stars of the -- photos instead of the action photos of the old well last week's games. It's Federer up you -- a program a long long time but they seem to be very good generics now and bland. You know ability of the kind of the -- the local.

And just give listeners. A -- what we're talking about that looking at the one from September ninth of 1960 that Boston patriots in Denver Broncos and pat patriot. Giving the bronco mascot a stiff arm as he goes down the field. And now in full color so you you you -- couldn't get much better than than some of these programs especially. Back the original days of the NFL just a few more minutes here with and stately all on the hobby. And and before -- let you go I want to get to the NFL Hall of Fame is something you've been working on and tell me how that came about.

Well. It is via -- felt operate because of my head of the my my webpage. There are many many they have both players who I feel has that been -- the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Simply because they played the American Football League. Object kept handsets that run the dole for example. Played at two championship teams. They've. They were excellent players they hit one laden. Careers. Unfortunately. At that time the media was more let's controlled by the NFL. A lot of sportswriters never watched they have -- games. And didn't realize the quality of play in -- felt so. I decided these guys don't give up -- general in the recognition. So I created a American Football League calls and I don't mean by any means of people might call for -- in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But many of -- do Johnny Robinson from the chiefs line level Taylor fro from the Broncos. So it's it's an opportunity to represent present something that. People probably wouldn't see if the it is to look for -- really.

Art and I appreciate the time this morning great work I love the website remember the AFL dot com. And continued -- success in getting the word out on on the AFL.

I think you have like they want more that's their way here to become -- that nobody's ever what I think buffalo. The Buffalo Bills -- two American Football League championships. They were every bit is that if that's significant is any NFL championships won by the Cleveland Browns would rebate papers prior to prior to the merger gave the bills that -- one. Two major league football championships.

Hide and all banks in you have a great weekend you. All right that's and -- named Leo I'll remember the amp L dot com and you haven't checked out the website or you have showtime and you're looking for -- in a watch on TV can check out full color football. A lot of great information and great tidbits about the old American Football League. And just looking over and his website from -- AFL dot com. Impact on the AFL NFL merger but just ran out of time they're so if you missed anything you wanna go back in. Read read -- more about the AFL checked out and his website remember the AFL dot com. Mike has the day off don't forget you can catch any part of our show and -- in the audio vault at WGR 550 -- count. To be missed my interview with and -- Leo last segment. On the -- fell and some reminiscing and looks back at the AFL and is what's -- remember the nfl.com. You can check that out. At hobby page on WGR 550 dot com coming up in a few moments I'll be joined by Jim heard of David -- car rolled. Will talk about this year's football hockey products in what you might wanna look out for fuel or have a little money to spend on. Football -- hockey products and also sabres defenseman Tyler Myers the rookie. Is he in this year's young guns class for the NHL -- series and know what might be able to expect some new things coming out as the product hits the shelves the upper deck. Hobby series one product hits the shelves. This week also coming up next segment we will talk about. The pro baseball hall of fame and why this might be the best week to go and check out the baseball hall in the Cooperstown not an easy drive down to Cooperstown. Little more than three hours away but always a good time and this could be one of the best weekends of for a memorabilia fan and some of the newest memorabilia to hit the shelves and hit the scene at. Cooperstown but right now I am joined by Jim heard of David Adams guard -- and Jim thanks for joining me this morning. It Jim we talked about yesterday an -- get right to it. Let's talk about the 2009 football rookie class and how it compares to the past couple rookie classes with including Adrian Peterson in Brady Quinn and players like that.

2009 it is there's a lot of guys are stepping -- to weigh in making these cells. Like sixteen -- for the giants quickly Wallace here. Cheer you -- when -- Philadelphia's district -- the capture. In the when you do that right away he could such a toll for the product a lot of people. But it VP and a desire for these terrorist -- so it makes products -- sort by and it makes you know the supply and demand goes up. So people to buy extra large and it was a -- wide variety problems people anywhere from 25 dollar boxed where you might get you know approach protect. To ought to merge all dark Archibald sterling where you you might get our twelve autograph spots where girl serial number out of a certain amount which means they only make that -- in the entire line of products.

And it seems like to me when when you look at football. Rookies are the cream of the crop where in some other sports like hockey you might look for -- like a Wayne Gretzky autograph for numbered according how or something they have but football. You're you're looking for the rookies and their autographs in box is especially like -- rookie and stars are certified or even the upper deck series.

That's correct so counterproductive charity supports all regular -- its its -- separate sources 1991 of our crop. -- it's it's like of regular affordable rookie of repeat arteries are. The other thing about how to do for our ports strategy of sports is an Internet draft best picture -- year. Operatives peaceful Europe baseball players can sit in the arms and for some years in an Arabic prospects are so. He gonna open actually test for years -- are. Hockey is different because generally play keys were considered a repeat originally were hurt you referenced 2009 2000 temperature or hockey coming out here are what Johnny to -- Other nephew -- the -- parent -- Sidney Crosby typical players it was lot of -- requires -- rich you're exemption sabres also and that's mostly very very well and seeking financial storm because Bernard -- sponsored these but he. --

Aren't speaking with Jim heard from David and cart rolled 832 on a hobby pat -- along with you and Jim we'll get back into the hockey product in just one minute -- stay with football for a second. And sure. Now if you if fans are looking for players rookies in their. College uniforms they're still products that amp is a lot of times we'll see. On the photo shoot cowards going into the upper -- top series but press pass actually gets the players in their college action --

It -- That was true until upper deck just recently all of our licensee for collegiate. -- you'll and I'm not sure exactly hull -- no particular effect. Or beat you have the licensee for now so. Google's products are not allowed to feature. Cards most players' uniforms and work I believe it's -- lobos. And are you ignorant things so. At a futures should protect --

RA and I just opening a box at the bit to the 2007. Up football product and I joined the Adrian Peterson club. And it was a tops box and got deployed AP. Rookie autograph card I didn't know that. He's actually change his signature sense that rookie year it's it's now not his his full name it's 88 AD 28 is that correct. -- so little interesting out players changing their autograph after they make a name for themselves in the -- in the NFL.

That's right they do tend to do that there's such a limited her initials or maybe on the need more on the Korean products. -- Are more -- him the nickname actually on the card in the sign and that's -- descriptions of one here.

That's always interesting because you you know you get an autograph Carter eighty guy goes by nickname -- they can have like a CC sabathia in baseball if he spells his name not usually that's. Up parallel card number to a certain amount sold those are always worth more.

Generally and it becomes more -- users -- so there's of people you know people who are fans you'll that are trying to other steps. Or -- hardcourt all the players and -- charge and a player fuels and seek after Grossman's.

All right let's switch topics on to the hockey product with the season a month in and we we touched on in a second ago Tyler Myers part of this year -- upper deck series one hobby -- also John tomorrow so. A good rookie class coming out and -- a lot of cars that local fans -- don't want to collect.

Absolutely and I believe on some roster impeccable senator who just Pol -- to sort of early entry to what we -- also and -- are for local fans -- product to pick up you know it in midterm be reasonably priced at this time because they're young and they haven't either their. The big impact yet so. It's it would be nice to well served a couple of a couple of chairs and a poster declares the sabres considered a lot of prospects are here so. Not just property can be -- right. -- playing well. To me Tyrone Marshall should tests assure and then we'll see on route that goes to be they're gonna coach who more often aspect of the future.

And it looks like may be this year the -- a few more rookie cards than the past year so cadet remember last year in in series to a project. I believe who has just anything derby that was in the set and so now I get to the in this set and maybe one or two more in an accent so a lot for. Local hockey fans to look and hockey product this year. Speaking with Jim learn from David and struggled here on the hobby. And what -- what else is new in the product for proper next series one this year -- as he knew die cut parted things like that.

Yes sir there's a lot insert this year argue yet it would seem to church -- he's pulled Vioxx. Which is it because -- he gives you a better chance. Are these. Of the -- outside I didn't look at checked the -- but generally -- a -- pretty well and only so annoyed and answer or you remember a time and I'll attempt at a -- he put inserts and most surely well and I see that something extra and do news this is victor inserts you know. Well a little better when you haven't -- cheaper insurgent people who -- but ignored you and your answer oh well better partner products -- butter in it. Straight major product as well and mix of more you know. More what you got to solve water you want -- prop. You wanna make sure that you know people use search to maps for rookies were future number so. And it takes a difference in the in the market tracker to go up or perhaps in eastern well. Where a lot peep or bodies in it. She uses -- A lot more people have to buy -- a lot -- a lot -- depend on the --

And the upper deck series one hobby hasn't come out yet hasn't hit the shelves but are there are few products out there right now that if fans wanna block today and and get something it's it's affordable and it -- get a nice product.

Yeah I I I really like you know it and I'm like an act he we haven't it was a sight for 55 and Scotland's saint. In the written about it -- guys -- that -- sorry well -- eastern -- from -- and extreme -- really really -- season. And when you have to repeat well Steve Mason from Columbus is not typical under the that's from the playoffs this year. Pretty -- those boxes -- another reason you -- to preview a botched it here. -- wrote for extra box. -- your chances are harder to buy you a couple and so memorably. Surgeon managers Ernst. And then some other insurgents also in -- You you can share a cancer is a good -- her into the initiative not a record you're here -- sheets and will be -- some sort of really well. Really really to straddle across a picture.

Just a few more minutes here with Kim -- from David Adams card role he mentioned autograph cards and go back to football for a second that's why -- like the football product so much it seems like. Whatever you wanna go across -- at. A Lauren boxer a higher end box you're gonna get some type of autograph which is something you don't see it in it in every sport.

Generally that is true baseball or are very much different. Whether or two same same name product it dozens of -- But it's you know. A long time ago I mean -- or even. I believe it will lose 979 -- upper coast attack humans. The first steps of challengers -- And that ball really really well because -- near impossible to one. Mr. 2000. Dollars east -- certain number though so you -- at the art or sit down. You know after they you know they noticed in Kuwait potential. Reacted in the market. These companies started to do more -- noticed consul -- you know to keep peace that you know -- from jerseys. Pieces of home router. Or if you are reaching an -- a touch people's tension and tries to get out. Something new in in in in trying to insult our product and make a proper.

Yeah -- I couldn't agree with you more I was just looking over my football collection of the day in and -- without. Eli Manning piece of his. Helmut that he wore at I believe -- the photo shoots and his and his rookie year so they are really thinking of anything these days in now and the products are better for.

Jim absolutely and in the in the big city opera has its its -- there's two sides and there's. He a year earlier -- passionate fan who loved to collect. YouTube for the oh for the love of the game and because you try to certain players such other. And Minnesota senate corn were it's an actual markets it's a little at the contrast. You know you might you might think all the search -- be strong this year. I might I might actually pieces in and wait on them in which these guys to do to really -- play better and and and you know that might Sullenberger might open -- an -- and keep our economy -- card store. Also a lot of people treated as a way Olympic too and that's stability most impressive thing about beats that people can actually do it and they do.

Aren't in in in -- not to close on Jim Jim heard from David and cardinal Jim thanks for joining me this morning. For here yet you have to go on and right up against the break here on the hobby 840 so we'll take its time not and when we come back we'll give you my final thoughts and maybe why should check out the pro Baseball Hall of Fame. This is probably the best weekend to go to the -- of the baseball hall in the Cooperstown numbering in my producer dank cave had no idea that it and had ever been to the baseball and.

Yeah I have twice a lot of that are lot of I've only been -- real and it was a similar weak candidates out in that the bills were on the buy out I'm curious to know why you think that this is actually the -- weekends ago so. While I went to Syracuse it was only about an hour away felt that figured why not the bills run the by. It was right after the 2005 World Series of the though White Sox just beat the Astros. And two days later meet a friend said you know what it's a Friday got nothing going on let's head down. Wouldn't you know that the curators in the hall had just come back with all the World Series memorabilia. They were going to be putting out. So for memorabilia geek like me I had to be a lot of yeah I mean you've got to see everything before it got put up in it in a display and he got -- I'd Jeff Bagwell Jersey that he warned the -- out the hats gained baseball's. -- broken bats. Helmets everything -- got to see it before everybody else did while nice I about it do you know if they do whatever you're outlets covered just happen to be there by -- locked the -- that they did I just went there on -- locked but it is as far as I remembered it -- they do that when they get news new things -- the shown to people who work. In the hall that day so you know he can if if just by some cancer there and they're it's something new coming out and go check it out and he won the first to see it.

Honestly got I didn't even -- Jeff Bagwell is on the team in 2005 he and I really I totally forgot their job -- while still hanging around was he a lot like. You must not have been more than a bit player at that point I can't believe I don't remember this.

I believe he was injured you -- think he was even on the active roster being part of the killer bees and a franchise for so long you have to keep him I had a Frank Thomas was injured and he was. Hang around the White Sox they'll. Now -- you know if if you're looking for something to do if you get if you have three hours to kill I guess the.

All of fame is a three -- I guess that's what it takes a Hall of -- is definitely a cool place I just. Here's part here's what I would change about the whole thing that the plaques also on. All the memorabilia. You know amazing I I went there actually in the sort of 2005 so I was there. The year after the Red Sox had done their thing so I got to see who Red Sox exhibit with. The bloody so called bloody sirens and everything else right well I the one thing that I wish they were changed alcohol pain and they did at the last time when the time before that. Outlook -- that we knew what they they make you they they heard it through a little room and you have to watch a little. Seven minute video now now really are they got rid of that. Old at least they didn't have it on that day okay because their -- you don't have a choice of -- of the -- times that I wanted to make it's it's not like he's bleachers Mehmet. They do this whole state -- it's like. Is stall is wonderful you know and but then they released CI you can go and every elected or you wanna watch but I can definitely do a couple little sound and at a promotional.

You know I wonder that was just the fact that. With the baseball season being over now many people were there -- I don't know if the point of sitting down that's the other thing that's gotta be a great time -- just because there are no crowds both times that I've gone have been dead smack in the middle of July oh it's crowded it's all about but there were maybe fifty people and and you know he walked up and down main street it's easy Doubleday field in. On that finds nothing grows hanging out with within a reasonable distance Nellie wasn't I'm gonna grab that fifty feet away terrorist. But now -- at four. We just about wrapping up here on the hobby and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the stand in a big football game even -- the bills are playing tomorrow big WGR game tomorrow top.

I -- in the noise and the pain that you're aren't you guys. Listen I don't big WGR football game it's an annual tradition for us bye week yeah we're playing tomorrow. What do you what I favor traditions about these games in his who has the crappy -- Jersey. And United's it's usually obscure players -- busts. -- cozy deal has like. Mike also Rogers you're something I want Rick -- last read Arabic mockery admirer I like Mike Hayden acknowledged earlier you know so I doubt we'll see what I decide to go tomorrow but that's a mile.

Ayman have a decidedly AFL feel -- online at that even with the -- rather excited as something arriving in the mail today they're able. Mary it's I might have to be -- tomorrow I'll I can't it's -- season ending -- customer. You know if you get an open field hit in your view co workers you can't take music and and I got I hope not I can't I can't do that. What's well my guess you'll have to talk to Mike next week and let everybody know how via WGR game goes well they'll put in sports council picked up. Are able thanks for joining me this morning here on a hobby just about out of time I really enjoyed. Filling in for Mike this week Michael be back next week and if you missed anything from the show war -- shows don't forget check it out the audio -- WGR 550 dot com coming up next it's Tony Caligiuri with the Thurman Thomas sports training our.
