We're gonna be chatting with top reject me ESPN he joins us here on WGR. It dotted soured Jeremy how you don't first of all.
How are you look I'm not talking.
You know I I mentioned we wanted to talk to guys. I talked about the quarterback coming -- book before we do that since the bills designed Brian -- this week what did you think of him way to jab him coming out a little.
I like Bryant you know not the not a the first round quarterback but it happens I would say late second early third round arrangements. I thought you would it was not that far behind that Chad Henne. From Michigan and obviously you know Chad Henne started do some good things for for the Miami Dolphins and it's started out to be a pretty solid class to -- if you look at Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan Chad Henne and you know I have -- obviously you know -- sometimes just about the situation you're in finding the right fit. I think -- of this developed properly and if you did things just click with them good opportunity to -- he loves the game I know that. These he's got some some mechanical issues that he's tried to deal with in terms of getting the ball out quickly and he's not the best athletes you have to protect and so. It obviously that is that's going to be an issue but. Bill he certainly has enough potential if things go well and and start getting the confidence to to contribute.
Now who knows you know what the -- plans are for him in the future and you know if this is the move they think it's going to be the quarterback of the future we don't know obviously -- they. But they also look in the draft -- that guy. Who you think will be. The guy yet not necessarily right now all the best player but down the road this will be the best NFL quarterback in the draft class who would it be.
Well you're talking just did this upcoming yes.
This upcoming class and April -- this one up in April they decide hey -- gotta get a quarterback in this year's draft Edwards is a bust. And Fitzpatrick is not gonna do any thing and who knows about Brahma they say we're targeting a quarterback who's the guy.
I think it's Jake locker from Washington. I've really I believe. He says that the combination of the physical -- the competitiveness. In the mental toughness to get it done in the NFL now. The problem is dead -- that's and the ability issues and I think it's come as a result of playing. Behind an awful offensive line -- Washington and really having very little support and early on in his career Todd Willingham news more an option quarterback and running around doing different things but. In this past season. He's. Reduce corporate -- Turkey since these turkeys in new it was that USC and he was exit quarterbacks coach and worked as coordinator at some point and had a hand in developing got the Carson Palmer Matt liner. In that capital and in that Mark Sanchez and all those guys that have been tomorrow that the Trojan program. He understands the NFL. Game and he understands how to develop quarterbacks there's not many guys like that that the spread crazy college game right now so. We've seen a huge improvement from Jake locker in the past year and I I think if he goes back to school he doesn't want warrior code ability. It would only help him but I also think we've seen enough to know that. That it developed properly get a chance to succeed the NFL also. And deployed on a bad thing he's used to be -- on the run is used to have to make plays in the and maybe ethnic kinda guided have to bring in did try to. No debt and its related sparked and so often buffalo.
I'll just -- in Niger the problem is you've just basically. Convinced many bills fans not to take him because we are a lot of the same thing knows there's -- about as scared as J. P. Losman -- and then well that he didn't have a whole lot of protection he's running for his life.
Others say that there's only all the difference in power -- J. P. Losman and Trent Edwards Trent Edwards this. Solid player -- protective and all those things they're not even close widgets Jake locker in terms with and Jake locker I think is far and away. The most talented quarterback just skills -- from. Mobility to arm strength to you know size and athleticism everything that goes into it yet it's far and away the most talented he's just not. As refined as you'd like this -- quarterback who you're brawler in the draft in the top ten -- but I didn't J. P. Losman to Trent Edwards nodded and.
does he have the ability to. I'm when I'm when we're talking quarterbacks trying to hear the thing that we we noticed but Edwards he doesn't do enough -- make plays on his own. It has a lot of times guys you don't know that there's pressure in your face and Roethlisberger for my money is one of the best in league at doing that kinda -- so. When you talk about lockers -- or is it his his ability does he make plays on his own that's an.
that that's the only thing you can substitute nobody else around them up. And -- that I'd say he's he's used to that and that's what he's had to deal with throughout the college career is. No wide receivers I mean named -- the last offensive linemen are still got it from out of Washington dominating in the NFL. -- that's what that deal with so. I'm not saying that I'm not saying he's been committed a miracle worker and certainly reviewed and you know he's going to be in this draft are awful have a chance to draft him by. If it all came together and use the quarterback next year for buffalo. I'd be able to properly dated -- that the talent level is better than they've had a quarterback since Jim Kelly and and he's used to having to be on the -- scrambling and making plays and and you know whether worked out -- you have to put guys around him in order to succeed but he certainly would be. More adept at coming in doing that than any quarterback we've seen in buffalo last several years.
On one other thing I was curious about if if again -- that let's say they take the approach that. They don't wanna pay the quarterback if they have a top ten pick and they just don't wanna lay out that kind of money. On a college approach by the way at all to well okay well. Why would be a good approach.
I'm -- believer that you have to you have to put the -- around them I mean it. You have to have a good offensive line you have to have a defense that going to be able -- put you in good situations and not not a lot you get behind early games. You have to mean did everything have to be in place in order to get young quarterback to command and succeed. And so to -- I would I would take another offensive lineman. -- in the draft it's did you know that had a higher percentage of success rate in terms of that you know bringing -- to tackle compared to quarterback. I would continue to do build that defense of -- I would. I didn't -- this other areas the can be dealt with early in the draft and then a year to down the road. When those pieces are in place. Bring -- the freeagent organs band as a draft pick package -- move up whatever you have to do and and go bring -- insert the quarterback. Matt -- that exact. Because Atlanta played pretty good defense and had a phenomenal run game and they have some pretty good weapons and wide receiver Joe Flacco had successes rookie. And seventh that's still gives. That defense blaster was phenomenal for the ravens and they had a great run game -- know Mark Sanchez came into new York and that a little bit success early their play good defense and running the ball. That's run out and even Matt now so that it's just it's a very simple formula but unfortunately we get so caught up in trying to bring in that marquee guy. This felt that it's and then turn the franchise around but don't support -- by default flat on its -- and you say well you've got a good player. Most cases it's is that the organization didn't to a good enough job putting talent around the quarterback position.
And you and other commitments but two quick questions Biden get in and if that's the case then let's say they decide to do what you just talked about gold some other way in the first round. And use of that high second round pick on a quarterback then who would you be talking about.
Well you know it if you go out but it could be draft -- Russell Crowe is the best offensive lineman in this year's draft out of local state and then the second round. It's just that depends on some of these underclassmen to about the maybe. Maybe Jimmy -- then it's from Notre Dame -- there it's it's a little bit doubtful but you never know at this point. Sam Bradford. Let -- I still think we're gonna see him fall a little bit in the draft is a result. Of the injury in the -- in the opposite he played and so maybe people all the bottom the first round to move. Move back up into the first round get in there after that there's been brought going to be a big drop off a quarterback in -- mustard -- draft someone. In the you know in the second round but again I'd rather wait till next year. And go get a player that you that you love that -- drafted offensive tackle and it spent maybe your first two recruited YouTube. Bolstering that offense and defense the line and next year ago bill drafted a guy like Andrew locked out of Stanford -- emerging Ryan ballot out of Arkansas. They're appointed young quarterback in college football that that you can drop the year two down the road. Rather than spending in early pick and taken away from from quality players and other positions that might be more important your team right now.
The last thing I was curious about when you start talk about defense and the front this reminded me Aaron -- hasn't really done much of anything is a -- what did you think him coming out of Penn State is is -- troublesome.
That and did I love the -- got. You know I felt the one thing always want though that you. He's not ready to play right away. I think you know holding out a little bit and -- some Buehrle struggled yet been able. To bounce back from but. So long as he doesn't lose confidence in the -- focus does everything I still think he's double digit sack guy in the lead. Whether it's next year -- the year after -- underside -- and what can fully developed and still kind of growing into his body and and learning the position coming out of Penn State but. They're cute thing to note that I have made one. Yet the speed to explode up yet to get the quarterback in two. He's relentless. In pursuit and it gives a great effort and at the type of guy. If you start gaining a competent to become a contributor. Good hand emerged as one of the leaders on that defense so. I would give up on it yet I've you know I've been wrong before I'm sure -- be wrong again but I don't think I'm wrong and Aaron -- and I still think he's going to be a very good NFL player. In the next year so.
Well -- draft mode earlier this year in buffalo thanks very much for coming all of us today. -- topic. ESPN on WGR.
