Card collecting you used to do it when you were a kid then you wanna way to college and -- through all your cards a way I heard that one before well that was then and this is now card collecting his big business now cards of your heroes that your -- are still out there and sometimes they -- six figures you can spend hundreds until new products and still make a profit how does -- all -- these days welcome to dot hobby WG yards -- new show created to keep -- up to speed on the latest trends and let everyone else -- just -- lucrative collecting still can -- appears WG yards most avid collector. Mike show us.
I've got to admit I'm I'm a little intrigued by this tiger story. What's going on there. Your. You come upon a scene. Where there's been a car accident. And you can tell that the car. Has driven into a tree. Okay. It's not on fire. It may be smoking it may not be the one of the officers on the scene said. There was medium damage so you don't card got banged up in the middle -- night. And you you know the driver you're married to the driver. -- to think you bash out the rear window to try to get him out of the car that's that's the move. There we go back and just see if that might not check quote.
Yeah I mean that's what they're saying they're saying that -- Tiger's wife took a golf club to the back windshield. To help him out of the car might have been her story. That might be his story that might be the police story source talks -- right c'mon.
Afghanistan -- IQ I Q I just. Just. This is going to be hobby related this question -- and I'm going to have to get to the hobby but come on -- I'm very curious it's that she did smashed the back window in an effort to get him yes. These few poll and the front seat. Through a back seat. The broken back now Cadillac SUV. Right yes -- UB US and currently him now on the ground right she's following Tiger Woods like that right. Because police found lying on the ground by the I -- I'm Josh and he was incoherent -- the -- I do to band. Especially on a Saturday. Robertson. Well tiger.
Woods here comes the hobby part in. Tiger Woods is the one. On untouchable. Star athlete I mean he is as squeaky clean. As terrorists. And some of that at times is sort of made my. My eyes roll you know just beat the lengths to which she hear tiger goes to protect his privacy. Okay I get it. By you know as a sports fan I wish there were a little bit more intimacy. Tiger and and the public and the fans I think it has gotten a little better. Once he got married had kids in the got to know a little bit more about. About him his kids are at his tournament sometimes you see them I guess that could be they could be shrouded in secrecy or something but. I like to know a little bit about my. Favorite athletes and I think you do to. We don't have to know everything. But you know you like to know a little bit a bottom and tiger has been so careful with his image. And things have come out at different times about whether or not he's a good tipper and things like that by. For the most part he's done as good a job as you can do protecting his privacy now really that's not the point the point is. It seems. There hasn't been much to worry about. In this might be different this story might continue. Andy might reveal some -- things about tiger that. He it will it will no longer allow for him to be called squeaky clean who knows. There was a story. In The National Enquirer due to come out. About an affair he was having with the woman he had just met in Australia. And it says on the eight the ESPN account at least how this woman denied. Any. Any relationship. But then her quote is not a denial I don't want it just. Get caught up in all the details of this crash because who knows anything about it. It's just to say this about Tiger Woods I've I've thought about it at different times -- really getting into tiger on the show. And talking about how low because a lot of how I think about this and I know I'm talking to a lot of people who are not collectors. And you might be surprised by some of the things that I can tell you about collecting. How much money some cards are like the thing in the open says in different. Different things like that you may or may not know that Tiger Woods pieces are very expensive now you might assume that -- expensive in the way that. The big stars in sports are LeBron. Kobe Bryant. -- who when baseball Alex Rodriguez -- steroids you know that that kind of level tigers on a much higher level. Everything is four figures with Tiger Woods. Even even the the book prices on cards get blown out of the water sometimes. And that doesn't happen very often. On eBay right now I just did a search this morning. Tiger Woods completed auctions remember sometimes LC go to eBay if you don't know what your items are worth. And search for items like what you have and see one at the prices are it's not enough to just. Search it and look at what people are asking for. You wanna know what they're getting. You wanna know what they're getting for these things and the tiger one of the biggest tiger rookies. There are golf cart should go back there are call cards there are tiger -- card summer autograph. One of the biggest ones is SP authentic 2001. -- or 900 made. And their slipped in there or six players who had autographed cards to 900 in the set tigers won two ball Garcia. Goosen a couple of the other ones and I think there were six. And the tiger card is you know. According to sports market report degraded card price guide SM RP SA puts it out on the of the leading. -- According to that magazine the tiger as -- authentic rookie. In perfect ten condition which is even for a card of this decade not at all something you wanna take for granted it's not that common. Is a 900 dollar card they sell for triple that sometimes on the triple that.
2000. Dollars 2500. Here on eBay completed auctions Tiger Woods as the authentic. PSA -- guy try to get 5500. Couldn't. I've got one here in Beckett. Nine back in there -- of the degrading companies BGS nine. Tiger Woods 2400 dollars nine point 52200. Dollars the book is nine -- and what does tiger won lately. And I'm not like joking by that it's just. He's not at the peak of his popularity is -- at a meeting with this accident I mean like a week ago. He's better and bigger. To the sports scene and now he's still big but he's been bigger. So we've got a recession. Were into the winter. Months you know cold weather golf season is off. Tiger's not winning slams like he was. And yet is rookie card 900 copies his rookie card in the SP a panic selling for when he 500 dollars.
A party can open out of a -- there is only one Tiger Woods and whether it's cards or ought to grafts. Flags. Pictures. I mean there's always huge. There's one here I don't know really much about it's his upper deck rookie. In a buyback autograph form. So what buyback is is that a upper deck buys back cards from eBay and other ways just like we've item. Upper -- buys them back gets them photographed sometimes and puts them back into -- in their numbered. They did that with the Ken Griffey junior Rick rookie card they've done that with lot of hockey cards -- sets. And they're doing it here so. The old one upper deck tiger won't tiger rookie card not a rookie card but they should have they should have that because -- cards have everything. Beat tiger rookie guard upper deck -- it buys it back so get some sign slopes -- number eighteen this one sold for three grand. It's a twenty dollar carving up the autograph this is a 3000 dollar sale on the day. Only one Tiger Woods.
And if this to put a wrap on it if this car accident this domestic dispute perhaps. Turns into a big thing in you know will try to make one because we love doing this as a society we love snooping on these. Famous celebrities and finding out all those salacious details of their personal lives because we love to do that. We will. We will see this story to the end. And if it turns out messy. I'm interested to know what kind of effect that'll have on tigers and tigers market for collectibles. Enough about Tiger Woods and his smashed car. It's the holidays you know Thanksgiving we just had Thanksgiving just to catch you up and we have Christmas in four weeks from today. And I thought that -- passing mentions mentions of this kind of idea before but haven't really focused on it too much. I thought there might be some people listening today who are Christmas shopping. Or on their way to guard Christmas shopping this chance that I do I think there's a chance of that. Thanksgiving weekend with -- they show yesterday but even that even more helpful and 8 in the morning there was probably prime time yesterday right. I want to talk about what you can what you should know. If you happen to think about. Buying collectibles buying cards especially. For someone for the holidays you absolutely can do it for kids you you even can do it for adults and I am I wanna talk about that a little bit too because as I've mentioned a lot of the show it's been a recurring theme for me. I've got. Certain number of close friends and none of them is 22 in the collecting. But I almost kind of like want them to be so. I wonder if you really can't I guess ultimately notice you really can't. Buy gifts for people that you know that they're not really into because it's just totally as selfish move to do that but. If if you do have a friend not even have a child but if you do have a an adult friend. Who has some pieces whether they be autographed jerseys. Not even -- necessarily bats cards whatever. I want I want to help you figure out what you could do. In in terms of the hobby for Christmas. Because it's easy. It's easy once you know a couple of basics. And if you have brand source sports fans you can or kids you can get. Your Christmas shopping done in one or two stops. Or even online just like if you're buying clothes or anything else. You can do it easily and I can help you get it right and I'd be happy to take your questions on it to you if you're that person I'm talking about Iraq today Christmas shopping. And you want to. Consider cards or memorabilia for Christmas it's a great gift it can't be -- I mean it can't be awesome gift. Let me help you with that 8030550. Is the phone number we'll take your calls or I will say we out of habit. But you know I don't have a co host or anything your -- is producing these guys have to do that. 8030550. Or 1888552550. For the many of you that stream the show. Online I want to give you some tips buying for kids. Buying for grown ups can be can be easier -- player -- like what seemed -- like boom there ago. But I know people who buy factory sets for their kids I wanna talk about the differences between sets and boxes. And -- How did know which product to buy because this continues to be a popular topic in my email box and it I know it continues to be a source of of frustration. For people who might have a passing interest in in sports cards why do I do here. This wall in front army has a hundred different products on it I have no idea what the differences are except for the prices that I can see on the stickers helped. This is a real problem for the hobby I think -- too many products cluttered. Too much similarity. Too confusing. Who could know the difference. I intend to get into that as we go until 9 o'clock today. 8030515. Is the number be about I'd just general question about collecting or something you might have in your home or used to have. I'd -- I'd love to take your question we'll do the best -- can -- that if if its value because like I always say I have no idea without seeing it. But I'll I'll try to you have a -- in the right direction. And also on hobby Turkey's. -- listen to the enthusiasm I said that hobby Turkey's.
We get a hobby horror stories on Halloween why can't we do. Obvious turkeys on Thanksgiving -- if you need any gobble -- gobble and got a gobble in their resident.
I I sound I I think are selling them on strong today to -- that was your last not Heath. Who works extra shifts on holidays I mean that has two or the does seeing it doesn't have to. -- gobbling going. Let's go to the phones Mike is with me that this morning -- Mike.
It might as well I was questioned -- coming -- work you're glad. It is open maybe you -- while you're out there and try to union idea I have three pop. Cycle was already stressed than they dressed the -- you don't stand out -- war. At three of the majors he won the LPGA one. Eighty US open wanted to -- one. And they're below and I -- I don't remember where I think bottom that -- US open Beckett 82003. Okay. Our 2002 -- I'm pretty sure that's like autumn by I can't be I can't be sure that I just curious that maybe somewhere and he bitter about that.
You know and I'm not even he had bugging me by the question by about exactly surfing the web here I suppose I could I could do the work for you. And during the break maybe look that up. But you know please help yourself to doing that mean that's that's something you can do any time right just check check online and see what's out there I think. It does. Is I'm listening to your question -- it does. I mean something where you got them mean if you were going to say you bought them a target. I would say you know the probably worthless but if you bought them at a at a major. There was some kind of a special. Limited edition collectible. Item like that then you know than maybe you have something but like I said most tiger stuff is is big. And -- you know you if you just. Let me use this is a segue into into another topic actually if if you're just. Thinking about your value what you have what is it worse with Tiger Woods you know you can't. There's no safer play in sports than tiger even today we'll -- Zurich -- change it all the next couple weeks but there's no safer play than that guy so what you have is is probably at least worth something.
A lot of people. Think of collecting as. Investing. And that's fine and there are people who are going to be very into collecting that are way better. At making money at it. And I am but I'm not in to make money and that -- it to blow money exactly I think about values and I care about that. And you know theoretically. What I buy I buy because. I wanna think it'll at least hold its value if not. Appreciate. But that's not my main goal I do it for fun. And also because it's not it's not worthless the stuff that -- by -- does have value and should down the road. But if you are if you are thinking about collecting. For a profit. It and it's very it's very tough I would say. But my advice would be. To focus on players as opposed to sets or years or sports or products focus on players. If you're really going to do that. You wanna try to find players. Whose cards will go up. And that's hard because. Most people that you think. Are going to go up other people already think that you why would you think a certain players cards would go up well. He's a young player and you think he's got a great future. And that's pretty much how it works you by rookies it's -- but -- think about it rookie cards already cost a premium but they comment one so. That's been factored in already. And whether you're talking about an elite prospect. Or more of a mid level prospect. The hype is already in there in the price. And most athletes at the pro level. Are not late bloomers they don't get better I talked about this with regard to the sabres yesterday -- regular show and hockey. A guy at 43 that's your guy he's not you don't see many hockey players improve over time in the league. By the time they're 2324 years old that's the player they are. So here in buffalo with Thomas panic was a big prospect top five draft pick. In his rookie card reflected that -- was on a good team and that was reflected in his prices too so you have. If the 200 dollar Thomas -- a rookie cards that I don't know that that will ever go up. It's not because he only has seven goals it's because how will -- lot. The reason it was as high as it was in the first place is because people expected him to be good now he has two ways ago he can be good to meet the expectations. And the cards -- stay where they are or he will not play well and is cards will drop I don't think. You buy. Rookie cards I prospects. That often. I mean hot prospects. That often pitched in and can be reasonably expecting them to appreciate its its tough. There are ways that are better than other ways and I'm I'm going to get into a couple of those and I wanna talk about. Holiday tips next take some calls and also give give -- hobby Turkey's. Have then give it or gobbling going wanna do all that can happen it happened in one hour. Or forty minutes. What city. Stay tuned to find out -- might show this is the hobby good to have you along on a Saturday morning 8030550. Is the number let's go to Dan now for a sports update.

I might show welcome back to the hobby we like to make this show fun conversational. Informative. And give you some variety to we've talked to Tiger Woods today and let's get into some other subjects with a couple calls here is rob calling -- I rob a Rio.
Good -- stereo I'm okay. Enjoy your show thank you I got a real general question and just in in. Our autograph always better be there -- cards always better to be autographed. Our cards always better to be autographed. For example like I drilled down and I don't think really collect two player rod Murphy who outplayed in the fifties and sixties -- and Bobby nor does because. I think he was a great player but what I you have -- better -- to go ahead and get those are crafted by cab.
I am not a fan of of autograph cards I mean not talking about ones that are produced with autographs on them but getting them signed. I have some but I'm I'm not a big fan of that to me the idea of a picture. Or even New Jersey is more appealing but it's and that's not to say that you really go wrong there I mean and or autograph -- autograph so. But -- the thing about it though is is if you have or cards. Mean real ones from the sixties and seventies. They're valuable anyway. Ands. I wouldn't I wouldn't say that the the autograph would bring the it wouldn't add that much to I think it in terms of the value side of it I think you're better off having the autograph on another piece on the card. But.
You know anything that any kind of memorabilia that's cart.
Yeah but it's really about your personal pure personal taste like you you could if you had a Jersey you might be able to buy it or Jersey. Unsigned for a couple hundred dollar somewhere like a nice one. And I -- okay. And the idea of perhaps getting one signed. Would be a great display piece in your house. But -- you know autograph cards you can do it. But the secondary market is in -- let you get to go get it authenticated first. And if you were ever looking to flip many of these things I would stay I would say get the autograph on something else that would be my advice.
Yeah I don't think I'd ever really want to let them but I don't want a good -- that would. Potentially make them be appreciated either.
Right tonight I don't think that would happen by Tom. It really it's it's a tough question for me to answer rob because. It really is a matter of your your personal preference mean. With with Bobby your. A Jersey a stick. An eight by ten or bigger picture maybe the famous shot of him scoring that goal against the blues to win the Stanley Cup. Some like that I think and or -- if you're if you're in the market for or autograph. Something you can show. More easily than a card would be show would be my suggestion. Here is Scott next -- Scott.
I'm okay calm I got a question about the future weirdo wizard -- late. Now. -- got in the -- collecting in the card -- late eighties early ninety's and -- all of that -- yeah. Now when my kids my age thirty years they still going to be joke you to.
Yes. Yeah unfortunately I do I mean I I think. I'm sure there are people or destroying. That stuff because it has so little value. But there are still so much of it. You know it might not be. Right now if you took 10000 cards from 1990. Into a dealer you'd be lucky to get two dollars for. If bomb if you you know in in thirty years. It might you know with inflation and everything it might be. It would be two dollars to be more than that but it would it's never going to have real value. There's just too just too much of it. Okay you welcome Scott. It there's just too much of it it's it's a hopeless situation. 89 to nine the something 934. With a few exceptions. You might wanna check with somebody burst by almost everything like as I've -- a lot of almost everything from those years is just totally worthless. Holiday shopping on the ship to that I wanna get to that I challenge myself and almost did in all those other topics. And I wanna I wanna start doing that here. You have those -- with kids. Christmas is four weeks from today. You have you have. You know whatever needs to be top -- me to do this by age but you have kids and they love sports. And you liked the idea of cards because of the following cards are fun to have fun to play -- Their information all you can learn something on cards I did. I learned how to compute statistics. I learned you know bowl trivia about my favorite players and players who -- my favorites. Free Internet era. Free games on TV every night aero of course by the cards warm were my way and that's why they mean as much to me is they do now I'm sure. I speak for some of -- the same way it's insane things happen to you. They're fun they're information old there. You know they can be exciting depending on who you get. On the play went. Guards are good idea for president what kind do you get. Four for a kid I would say this is pretty easy it's easier than you might think if you go into that hobby store you see the wall of boxes in the eldest. Lawyer mine because there's so many. I would I would recommend. Tops for baseball -- regular issue. Even though the split up series one series 21 of the other they're basically the same just different players. Football issues same thing. OP HE hockey don't those are the big or the biggest. Sets. That you can build there are not really expensive compared to other products at least. 5060 dollars a box may be something like that 36 packs. You get a lot of cards and you can read the backs are not too expensive. You get a couple of big hits to each of those products you -- the boxes now. There'll be a couple autograph cards are couple memorabilia cards and sometimes there are really big ones although that those are very rare. So you you can have fun with them the kids -- on opening them. Reading the backs of that's -- two cards are good for smart kids for kids who like to read. For kids who are into sports especially I think baseball baseball and cards are the best that. Because baseball fans are nostalgic baseball fans are into statistics. And their statistics on the back I don't honestly know basketball has a set. Like -- hockey set tops. Baseball or football they they met their might be a basketball sat like that. But there are so so many fewer players. In the NBA than say in the NFL or in Major League Baseball. I actually don't even on that applies if I'm not sure there's a basketball set like that but there may be. If you have a little bit more money to spend on just the regular issues for baseball like Topps heritage. It's retro style you'll have fun with that and your kids will -- its current players in -- or is there there are couple of hits they call it autographs in that product to. I have a few friends who by factory sets for their kids every year as a birthday present or Christmas present. And that's fine. Factory -- are fine. But I think there's a temptation not to open them. I know people who buy these factory sets it's great because it is cards but in the kids really do anything with them if you're willing to have the the boxes be busted open you've got every player in the sat right there and and that's great. But I think many people who buy factory sets -- with appreciation in mind. And that's. Not likely if the sets -- open on you know it's it's like buying bonds I think not Barry Bonds but savings bonds factory sets not as much fun. It's like to open presents right is it even really matter up to a certain age what you wrap. It's just the opening the -- I've got eight today Easter he turned six week. Six weeks old today at home have got -- I've got a young son and I was talking recently this week about Christmas and a friend said this this year I mean this series so young it doesn't matter but next year. Just rap stuff. Unity and have to put anything is wrapped boxes -- boxes -- love it. You know with cards to a certain point with gifts he can do that and there's the opening of the cards is relief fund for kids that's why I like box is over sets. I also love cards that have stuff on the back. A lot of the higher end products there's nothing on the back except the sentence or two it says you have. Received an actual autograph for -- used memorabilia from so and so. No information. I used to love the birth date the trivia the batting average the statistics year by year all the different teams the player is played for the cartoons. Remember the cartoons on the older cards and some of them are hysterically. And unfortunately inappropriate. I remember thinking I'm thinking about cards from the fifties amended the vintage stuff that -- stop postal great if you have a child into that. But. If not I'm thinking more current. But the the vintage vintage cards often -- cartoons on the back. And I'm just for some reason that the name that the card that comes to mind is a herb score card and Indians card from the late fifties. And on the back you've got a pitcher a cartoon of a pitcher in a big native American headrest. -- led the American League in victories and there's a cartoon of a return address. You know they reflected the thinking of the day. I suppose unfortunately. But on the backs the cards are fun to get that with the regular issue sets. -- the term if you're going into a -- to remember the term regular issue that I think is what you want and I think most. The employees at a at a hobby story card store would them explain things to you the same way. Mean you want. For kids right you want quantity. Wanted to be interesting and fun and you wanna waste your money on a high end product that they're just going to you know rip the corners off of goes without saying a got a little little bit more to say about Tom. About holiday gift. Sort of advice. And we could take couple more calls to 8030550. Is the number. I'm Mike choke this is the hobby more to come on today's episode right after sports.
Gobble it up then gave doubling. Or really just pushing a button of some Turkey doing. I think it's Andrew I don't think it's hurt I think it's Andrew. Andrew gobbles. I knew and Andrew gobbles.
What happened to me this is a card show already is is a radio station.
Dennis is next hi Dennis.
Hey Mike adore you all right thanks let's do it. I have played Patrick Kane. Autographed. Winter classic -- all right. And I Canada's. -- gift actually my wife. Got it from. An auction. And now I'm just wondering about authentication. Because it's autographed. And framing it and it is Patrick king considered a good investment in the cart world or -- collecting world.
I think so again with with Heidi highly hyped rookies or young players. There's already. Sort of there's like a price jump already factored into it in his first overall pick a lot of people are going to want. His stuff so you already talking about. Paying a little bit of a higher price for him but I like. Is I like the look of his career so far and he's -- a great team what you want is high point production. And Stanley cups and and I think he's in good position for that. So he certainly in my -- certainly not a bad investment I mean I -- and plus he's on a a team that has. A lot of fans and in Chicago and a big market like that so I like him for a few reasons as a as a player to collect sounds like a great piece you have. It didn't come with any kind of certificate of authenticity. Okay. Well you know you might not have to worry too much about that if you were looking to sell it. It would if you were selling it online for sure it would be something you'd probably need to do someday is to get it authenticated.
Okay -- authenticate something like that.
Well if you unless you can find someone in the area. Whose credibility. Is is good enough in that in that particular area authenticated autographs. To use than you'd probably want if you if you could speak you'd spend the money to do it you probably wanna send it to a may be PSA in California. Or another company that does that. Professionally. But now if it's of the peace for your house and it's Patrick Kane who's a local guy here in the buffalo area. It's not something I think you'd feel like you should feel like you have to do. You know the authentication part to sell it to do the best you can selling it online you'd you'd want that. Right. All right a look Dennis that sounds like a pretty nice little piece you have their pact came -- are classic Jersey. I don't know authentication. Good good then it's not I'm getting stumped today on a few things could -- not go into it. A local hobby shop couldn't go to bases loaded and and have them. Put thoughts -- I don't -- if they if they would as much time as I've spent there as well as I know the I don't know that someone they would do. If they didn't witness the autograph they could look at it and say just like I could well that looks like Patrick -- signature. But I'm not sure they could. They could give you something that confirms that without having witnessed. So. You'd probably have to go to a place that. Is it is an expert place in in doing just that but again like. PSA didn't see. The Jersey gets signed either so. What's the difference I don't know exactly how that works. Try try driving out to bases loaded Cheektowaga Dennis was going for Cheektowaga try driving out there and see see what they say about.
Here is Tony hi Tony.
Morning Mike are you a bad -- I'm -- Here I purchased the upper deck that collectible figure of Tiger Woods. And -- payment card no that's something -- they've been doing kind of but the recent phenomenon that is the peninsula by the news but it's occurred in this thing it. And that an opposite part of the the 2000 -- the famous point.
Yeah that's his rookie card unless it's a reprint of some of some.
Sore but the Picard is beautiful. -- I -- really terrible because I like the collectible figures easily collect the hockey player okay. I McFarland but not lately have noticed that other companies. A leading figure in the very steep hill but the -- is the exact point and the figures yes.
He's wearing like a Burgundy shirt and his name is on the bottom on a white panel yeah. Yeah that's that's his rookie card I don't know if it's as if it's a reprint or something since it came the way dead. But that is his rookie card from 2000 upper deck I believe. --
On the -- like their common as the in general with the figures aren't what's getting what you're doing on the cargo on the inside that. With them with a big.
You know I -- I don't buy the the figures so I didn't even really noted that the that happened. If you bought --
Yet an -- that's okay. Actually it is by upper deck which is kind of surprising that they even did it figure.
Yeah. You know he may -- a car collector if you are than you've got tigers rookie if you're not then you could you could sell that for. Ten or fifteen dollars maybe warning box from like that. I mean there's no problem with that happening that I can think of uses a little added perk to get to divide the figure probably.
Yeah I was accurate picture.
Okay Tony. Yes the point. Tiger Woods pointing to hold the ball going in the hole the 2000 PGA beating Bob may in a playoff that picture is on. The rookie I would wanna called an iconic -- it's from the year 2000 there are zillions of them out there but it is tiger and as I started the show by saying. Tiger stuff is is just huge. Even that card which is not even a decade old and there are so many of them out there are 1020 dollars that kind of range it's pretty good. For a new card there was so mass produced it's because it's him card number one I believe also from that said not positive of that but I think so.
