I walked into a popular national. Coffee. Chain place. That'll policy restaurant coffee house. Coffee house to me doesn't work either is it seems like there should be some. Some woman with deeds playing guitar or you know median accordion or something in the background there today either but I walked in to buy coffee. And I must have looked like a guy in a commercial buying coffee -- I mean I I'd I'm picking the little pieces of whatever that is out of my allies of walking in there. Well I mean who doesn't know this though the food draft and taken Nadia. And I think that's it's going to be my explanation for this this. Fatigued. State I'm in today. Nice to be along with -- today hope -- good Friday night this is the hobby. Well talking about cards and or anybody up. And it's certainly can mean in fact. It's more fun and don't answer right away but what's more fun. Within the hobby with all the conversations imaginable in the hobby then the -- and -- game which is when we ask our producer Dan two guests. At the price. -- we have famous -- is certainly famous but in this case. You know you'll certainly know the players. And he will you know may be one of these days come close. With his -- a little harsh there you have come close I've come close again. I had -- and I'd never been right on I don't think Ellerbe right today I've got a two parter for you don't wanna thanks I wanna. -- The show from a certain part of this conversation here from the damp -- game because I think. And I'll I'll take this is a hand to feel like. But I think you're probably -- where this I think sometimes when I was a kid and the price guides are starting to come out I was already collecting cards by then I'm talking like. 8384. By this point when it started to become the you know the thing to do with collecting was to look up. It was an annual book that I don't remember getting a magazine but. It was an annual Beckett -- and they have one for reach sport is really exciting to me when it came out. And I'd go through and check all the prices of everything and none of them really would've changed but. What you could see was that. There was some. Relationship. A common sense relationship between. Who who the player was and how good he was like -- biggest are we talking about. And the price of the card as there should be like is -- common sense I mean you'd think Mickey Mantle. As a hall of Famer would cost more than other -- hall of famers who just weren't as good. And so on down on the line but it didn't always work out that way and that's because of that the that the rest of the story. What kind of what what's the the scarcity. Of certain of these cards and sometimes that can. That can distort. That relationship so it's not of course it's not always. The most expensive cars are the best players Babe Ruth is in the number one part of my hobby holders Wagner was a -- Wagner was an all time great. Maybe top ten player ever but ask anybody who the most famous baseball player -- is almost always say Babe Ruth. So sure you could buy an expensive baby proof cards obviously but I hope in -- means it doesn't go exactly to order. I think past past when I've talked about going back to like 83 and careful not to just say the late eighties bird in the mid eighties because by then. With all the the supply. Of cards by then have everything to this point I'm making was was crushed. And with that let me let me ask -- Alaska two part question here it and watch it gets the book price on graded. Which means like you know if you're if you're wondering. -- cards are a thing now I've talked about Camelot on the show. And in some cases. When you get up to a nine and attend especially in really really old cars were there are almost never in mint condition. You're talking about real premium. Multiple times more. Value then -- the book prices the book price for a for -- one I'm asking about -- might be around agreed to an eight. So watch it's only what you think the book price of a Bruce Smith. Rookie card would be 1986. Tops football. You may. Know the card federal if you do and -- you're not really card collector and it's a little before your time even.
Just a little bit yeah but I feel like I can almost picture it in my hat I'm sure I've seen it before. Just that I used to be into -- collecting. Especially bills are collecting okay solid feel like might seem at least 186. Tops. Green border with white diagonal lines around picturing around it and then the picture of Bruce is just a closeup of his head. Andy's got elected jacket on the big or the Republican big sideline -- Coke or something like that. Looking off to decide what it's only best you can guess. The book price of that card. And V. The book price to different book sports market report the PSA. Price guide for the same carted a ten. 1986. All right well I'll go with the first 11. Will go. I'll save fifty dollars wouldn't. And then for a ten.
175. Taking said Michael oh interesting so you you've learned don't take that personally it was not a snub but went on to the third set the copied. And you've learned that there is if there's a -- The Bruce Smith the rookie. Books eight dollars. -- I mean he's an all time great because we all time sack leader we use the all time sack leader. Will we tend to put down our our guys are everything about ourselves we we put ourselves down all the time around here. But even if you wanna look at Super Bowls or just however one of put buffalo down. Bruce Smith is an all time great. And I think frankly more so than any of his his teammates mean Thurmond's in the Hall of Fame Jim Kelly is -- Bruce Smith. Was to me the best. Of all of the team of players on the team and it -- wasn't the best. Defense event in the league he was one of the two best for almost. The whole time you played for the bills I mean from from the mid to late 80s8687. For ten years he was. Clearly one of the two best defense events in the league all time sack leader. So not 58 bucks eight bucks is the book price you go into carts or today Dan. And you wanna collect all time great football players you walking out of all the stores the card is there probably is which is why it's so -- with the Bruce Smith rookie for five. Mean their nets element to your for the full book -- even -- that on me. You have five -- I told times have we ever played today gave up. Do you have the money you need to buy the card were talking about that is great that's as at all -- So it's an eight dollar card in PSA -- torts 650. Yeah look at that look at his eyes jump out 650. Now that eight of the only thing I wanna talk about there is the eighty six's. Were tough. Are tough. In high high grade Ron Amadon. His NFL rookies USFL. Card. Predates the 86 to upset by his first NFL card is the 86 top sets so was Reggie White and those cards in ten are. Into the thousands. Because of something whether it's. Out of the car to the green border. Brittle Brit marks thanks Ron Amadon might have a little black spot near his name most of the time on his cards. So tens or almost nonexistent even nines on Ron Amadon I opened. A box -- if it was Seles again I think it was cell Lois the economic the pact to concede through the the covering. I opened a box of those up maybe three years ago and I I found 45 Ron Amadon all just looked perfect to me. And I was so excited because I'm looking in the price guide and even in the nine that card 11 of them I should look now Vista just to be sure since I'm telling office. But even one. Ron Amadon 86 tops in -- nine -- would have paid for my box. 325 is the book on -- Jerry Rice rookies in the set to. So mom I had like five of them that I just thought. Almost perfect I mean a hard time finding anything wrong with -- so I sent the ball in to PSA thinking I am. Made here. And they were all weights. All five of them rates makes it about a twenty dollar card so I didn't pay for the box with with that as you can figure out. But once you get to attend its big money the point isn't. The degrading point to make a lot. Eight to ninth -- the public is is -- kind of sad that it's that it's true that Bruce Smith is a box. Or Andre Reid is six boxing you're nodding Dan isn't it like. -- want there to be I want there to be if you don't. Up proportional relationship that makes sense you can discuss you can argue about with fellow collectors -- just with sports fans you know. About who was better than whom admit that card collecting gives you another way to do that. That. Well George Brett verses Robin -- from the same set rats better because. His card is worth a little more although he's not he didn't steal bases or. I mean he didn't play short it's a tougher position I mean you could go back and forth with somebody about that. They're from the same set it's easy to do it and you can. You can use the prices of their rookie cards as a point in the argument you really can't. But Tom once you get into the late eighties even 86 here right once you get into them it's just very tough to do that. And that's too bad. Because it be funded its its its -- to talk about to argue about players and argue about sports. And then you gets I mean it gets worse I've just got to football price got in front of me to him looking up. Bruce Smith Audrey reads rookies in the same set one part away by the way they did them by teams in football in those years eight box. Reid is in in the Hall of Fame but some think he will end up there. Then you don't have a great year and 87 -- 88 Bo Jackson 5 dollars. Kevin Greene Kevin green is someone who may get a -- for the Hall of Fame probably not he's probably already been eligible but a dollar Tony five. Vinny Testaverde four dollars 198989. Score. Is a little bit different because there has been but there are still many consistent demand for those cards and when we get the phone calls as we often do on the show about. Discover cards from the ladies I'm too quick to say. Gambling you know promo but. I mean it's generally true 89 score is -- set that does have value eighty dollar set in some I mean many. Great all time great football players come out and that set Aikman -- Barry Sanders to name to name a few but they get to. You know ninety and it's just everybody from then on. Until card collecting became. Hundreds of dollars for the top products. Not most of the ninety's and into this decade -- biggest -- last decade. Just nobody's worth anything. Unless yours and you're talking about again whenever that exactly started -- talking with a high end product. With the the autograph cards in all of that Brett Favre is probably pretty good example for this. I -- even know his rookie card 92. It was just such a dead. Time and collecting. It would never even occurred to me to go look for Brett Favre rookie 91 upper deck. Ten bucks. 91 stadium club uncorrected error Brett Farr fifty dollars that's probably about as big as he'll do. 91 all truck ten box and it's just it's just dirt cheap. So with the cards that cheap is it fun acted to go get them is it fun to save money year. -- just sit around and fantasize about which which guys to collect football is no different than baseball -- hockey. Jogger is somebody Dominic -- You're you're talking about early nineties upper deck for guys like this Sergey Fedorov hobbled parade Eric Lindros even. None of these guys is worth anything. And and that's even Marty Broder gets up to like thirty I think.
I you mentioned Eric Lindros I whenever you talk about him and cards I always have that one image that one card in -- at him. Sitting in front of ten different NHL jerseys and I believe that's what does that score maybe I don't know the card now you don't know that are -- I know once it's it was before the draft it's just him and shoulder pads sitting in front of a bunch of blank NHL jerseys one of which. I believe is awful.
Really the draft when he was draft that was in buffalo. But I I don't remember that -- a picture. Him in leg or the baseball bat and the Jersey that they give you when you get drafted -- But that's Marty Broder is rookie card he's in front of of a curtain or something and he's just -- the dork he had and just like he has got drafted. And here he is sets that's 89 or ninety score -- Broder. I think. And our 2010 and -- keys that even considered old really he's been around. A long time but he's not at the point of his career where where people talk about him as old. So what am I don't know maybe I just. I don't -- much point but I like thinking about you know comparing. Great players how come. How come Nolan Ryan's rookie in 68. Is so much more expensive. Than C version 67 it's not like it's that much more but it is more expensive. Or that rod Peru and 67 and an intern Carlton. In in 65. I mean the good. The supply the existence of those cards is generally. Pretty easy to to figure out and understandable. And also pretty pretty it's pretty slim a mean relative to to later on so. What what does it mean does that mean that Ryan is better than Seaver. Does that mean that Ryan is more popular than Seaver and then you can get to rose and all the great players of the game. And used the prices the cards -- one way to compare them. And then you get in 1986. And that dies. Kirby Puckett right hall of famers and in different sports. They're just they're Clemens and I know that that's been tainted now by just can't do it. So was that's too bad right. I think that's a thought it was always a fun thing to do. All right well I'm here for you if you have a phone call that you -- to make to me and talk about collecting may -- this point I'm making or something that is in your collection something interesting do you. Have you found anything lately have you bought anything lately I always like to know. From other collectors out there or people that used to be collector's most of our call that we get are from the second of those two groups people that. Used to do it and figured out curious about it. I'm always a very touched. When people tell me that the show has reignited their interest and it or that at least it has occurred to people to to get back into it so I'm happy to. When whatever information I -- for you. 8030550. Is the phone number and lines will be open until -- also I wanna talk some football next. And about quarterbacks. As the season gets a little closer. I had a conversation on Monday with a collector. Wanting to know what quarterbacks. In the league right now would be the best investments. Now. There are there are Brady and Manning and Brees in those guys. But this was more -- that the -- this question was more about the many young quarterbacks in the game. How do you pick between. Sanchez. And Stafford and all the different -- a young quarterbacks that are out there and Chad Henne I mean there are lots of choices. And I'd like to say a few things about that in May begin your opinions on that too. 8030550. The number to call me I might show and this is the hobby on WGR.

Just between us god help me if that's true. If I'm talking about that all season long I -- not -- the season. Holy -- amounted to a food draft every day either but holy cow got -- if that's true. You know anybody was talking about that now. I see this from time to time but just think about that. The the bills quarterback situation right now is unclear and no one cares. Nobody cares who they pick. Being from the days of Flutie and Johnson. And a city that was. Just turned up to eleven about that team all the time. Mean people didn't care as much about their families as they cared about whether Flutie should play over Johnson you should -- heard this radio station. And now they have I guess they have three guys spot. Doesn't matter if they have ten nobody cares habit.
This is probably not right and probably going too far but. I'm wondering if that the guys themselves rather not start sometimes it's the season to start first. Maybe we Trent Edwards is ready to kind of get away from this I don't know. I wanna talk about quarterbacks a little bit here not not the bills I don't wanna bore everybody. But -- talk about NFL quarterbacks and collecting in the point of my being here is to focus on collecting. And I did have a conversation with someone on Monday about about quarterbacks in the league who would I recommend. As in artistic again -- use the word investment. Come as a choice somebody wants to get in the to collecting quarterbacks. Who would be a good a good play right now if you will. Well will go to the phones first and then I'll get into that and also got a couple comments on. The latest regarding Lance Armstrong and and I admit to those those comments have nothing to do with collecting but. I'm I'm thinking it and I I feel compelled to say when I'm thinking on that here is Mike first though I'm Mike.
I'm like Torre thinks. Like a major opinion and so -- but. I have come into our possession with Syria of basketball. That's been signed by all the players from the 2010. I'll start. I would like that we're going to be donating this ball. Through the national debt also -- to -- local charity here buffalo okay. And that the security event as a week from today and what -- major opinion about is do eight. Maximize maximize the the efforts to get the right amount of money four collectible like that in buffalo which doesn't have them be seen. -- what I be better off. Going through some other outlet whether -- EP charity or something like there and trying to maximize maximize the amount of money it would get purpose item for the local torture people.
Well that's a tough question for me because really the key to answering that question is just what your motives are if you wanna donate the ball which is quite generous the ball is going going to have some value. No the most from if you wanted to get the absolute most money you could for I doubt you could do that at a local charity and I say that. Less because of the fact that we don't have an NBA team then almost never is the most money you can get for something attained through charity donation. Usually. You wanna you wanna think about an auction instead so it's exposed to people who are who are collectors at a charity event. It's people some people may be collector's -- Things will go for less than they would online say. Generally but you know that's really not that should not necessarily be a determining factor for you I mean if you. You wanna donate. Through a local charity and you pick one for a reason then the ball should sell well enough to you know to make that worth doing. Does that make sense.
It does is you know I have talked to. This somebody locally here who does it late expertise and that he says that the law could fetch as much inside the 101000 dollars mine somewhere in a large. Larger market -- buffalo at a market that -- be.
Well I wouldn't know I would know about the dollar numbers but that that wouldn't shock -- say that and I would think I would think that he's right that. Whether whether you used eBay or eBay is tough because you have to be able to authenticate all the signatures and you wouldn't be able to show to people. It's something like that you might be best off going through an auction house.
Right okay that that that's great Mike I do have a certificate about the authentication for Yates that would help.
That the makes sense you would you do you care to tell us how you got the ball.
Well Mike you know quite well. We're in buffalo for. For sometime now and other local charities and national center for missing and exploited children and we opened up -- author -- circle about ten years ago and I've got friends on the demise. Do in my packet creation -- and all of the sports. Areas and the -- National football players association. Players association the bills. The MBA. Number of other groups. Charitably given to me. -- for -- Group that supports the exponential buffaloes so yeah idea contacts with each of the organizations that. When I call them an act of them at all about their -- trying to generously. If for -- all kinds of things -- collectible items one other thing now Roxio and you know. Please a -- a guitar -- an autograph like Taylor swept. -- that's something that's also reports passports. Thing but obviously it's something great popular now and should such a good price for the -- your local locally herbal.
Well good for you and I'm glad you called me about it. All right thanks Mike. Would you rather have -- the the basketball or the Taylor Swift guitar. I'll take the basketball me too close call. Close call but I'll take the ball you know it is they're there'll be. The sale of all of that ball the auctioning of it at this charity event the caller Mike is talking about. And that's that's. Going to happen next but you know somebody not not the charity offense of course necessarily. Draw. A crowd of people who. You know look for offensive to invest in or you know it's not like going to -- if I wanted to. Make some money collecting today I would go maybe duo cards store or I might go online and try to buy something with ideas on selling it down the road. If you happen to have the kind of cash. That you're at that event and combine that ball. You know you might think you could sell it back to someone else in in a different marketplace. For more I have done that. I have done that at a charity golf tournament one time. I'm not gonna talk about what the thing was but I I went in in bid on something because I thought not really that ever wanna keep it. But that I might like to I'm I thought I thought the value was good. But the price was right and I wasn't prepared to go. -- all the way to the top to get it wasn't something from my grandkids it was just you know something to to make a little money off of and I don't think there's anything wrong with doing that. Why why would there be. You know the money is going to the the cause that you know it was there in the first place this this ball. Will raise money for the missing and exploited kids and that's that's what it's about and really who cares who gets. Song is -- check -- right so why am I mean some people who sell the signature thing will topic I guess some people who sell. Cards or. You know important or interesting memorabilia. Want it to go to. Someone -- home I guess we're talking at a pet you'd say it that way that go to a good home. Com or maybe I I you can think eventually well. But if your in the middle. And you see something -- that's a great price for this a bit on this and make the donation you could probably write off the donation to. And then sell it down the road. Eventually we'll go to a good home and that is in the wrong with that. Mean we with that it's a lot of interesting in in in my circle of of friends talking about collecting and investing a lot of -- in conversations. About judges you know war what the what the ethics of it all. Of all might be like if if from. I should really like not talk about this now and prepare myself to have this conversation. Because it you it is interesting to to consider some of these kinds of things -- a friend or someone comes to you. With. With cards or anything. And they wanna know what they have mean you wanna you wanna be honest with them. But you don't I think and I wanna be honest with them always. But if it were something I'd want a --
How do YE reconcile. What kind of offer I -- I mean if it's. He -- an honest assessment of what you have. Now. For -- be able to do it I might not be able to afford. What that number is. But I'm looking at it. And I'm thinking I might love to have this and I'm not going to get very many chances to have something like this so if I guess if you wanted to sell it. Right now I would pay you a little less but whose gonna wanna do that right so I mean there are lots of different. Ways that can play out in some of them can be tricky. You want them you know you wanna can put your friendship and you know your your reputation. I think first. And then whatever opportunity you might have to buy something below that. I think that's generally good way to go. Well I've talked about quarterbacks very much year. But time I'd still like to. The the NFL right now has an interesting group of young quarterbacks and I think one thing that's happened. With public opinion in the last decade or so. I think most football fans can rattle off easily tip of their tongues. Names of highly drafted quarterbacks. Who bombed. Don't you think most football fans can do that can you do that. Don't you know Ryan leaf and -- Smith and Tim Couch and Cade McNown and all these guys like this even Culpepper who. Had his moments but I mean there are a lot of names like it is. And most fans know that maybe Alex Smith soon enough is on that list San Francisco's guy first overall. And I think it's so common that people do that and we were so conditioned. To to hearing about how risky it is to pick a quarterback. Hi in the first round but I think Matthew Stafford. Is underrated as a prospect and I don't say that because I watch Georgia in fact most of the people. Who talked about Matthew Stafford who's picked by Detroit first overall in 2009. Most of the people who talked about him around the time of the draft put him down. This guy doesn't deserve to be first overall. Maybe he's the best quarterback in the draft he's not the best player in the draft there was just a lot of negative. Talk about them and many got the highest contract in the history of the sport and people hated him for that. Were criticized for that as if that were his fault. From what I've been. Reading and hearing about him. And from what I've seen last year he got hurt in -- it was terrible it went back in the game and that's Jim Kelly. And and other guys. I think there's a lot to like about Matthew Stafford is is rookie cards are cheap but I think. If you can if you can find it I think even may -- Sanchez to Sanchez. With the jets is super hyped. And that team is being super hyped Super Bowl -- even. I'm not sure it's a bad play though I mean the guys with the big -- are the guys you wanna generally stay away from. But. If Sanchez wins in New York. His cards are going up there are still not too expensive. For what his ceiling is I think. And some people don't love him because he didn't always play that well last year his team got the AFC championship. He was a rookie in New York City having played USC across the country when did that. I think you have to respect that some so even though those guys are big money guys -- Rogers another one not cheap. But I think there are a few quarterbacks right now in the league Roger's little different he's been around for longer he's done more. Stafford and Sanchez too high picks I like them both. As as investments but they're not gonna be cheap for you wanna find somebody cheap well then -- we're looking. Chad -- Maybe with Miami does he. Continue to play well match job in the -- expensive and he had big numbers last year is taken -- team nowhere if they finally win you might be able to get something their Houston though such a nondescript team just. Is there anything interest thing about Houston so well -- but I didn't have as much times -- wanted to go into it after week we talked about that other thing about. Quarterbacks in the league right now not radian Manning in that class but otherwise a some adjusting options there for nothing like a few of them. 8030550. The number I might show this is the hobby -- have more for you after sports. I might show welcome back to the hobby or talking quarterbacks here. And making money. I mean that's. That's a pretty good combination of things to be talking about let's make some money was sports let's figure out who's going to be good. And invested in those people. You wanna find a reason to get back -- card collecting. About that -- telling you that I can. Necessarily. Show you the way. But it's one thing that you know be in real here I I like about collecting is that you can't I can try to. -- what I know about sports and and invest in those in those players in their collectibles and see what happens. I like Matthew Stafford I even like Mark Sanchez even though their ball expensive especially Sanchez Sanchez and they're great.
Opportunity to blow up as a as a football quarterback I mean he's on a good team. And he's in the best market he could be the talk league if the jets are as good as people think. Sanchez gives you home run potential. But you know you're going to pay for the for the at bat if you will. And -- I like Kevin Durant real quick to I think. In basketball I think LeBron is he's got these of course the talk of the league. And Amber's gonna wanna know how Miami Doug will be a lot of focus on them a lot of scrutiny to. Meanwhile Durant who is up your player. Is just gonna. The great -- stays healthy. For Oklahoma City it's a super small market but they have improved team he is -- fans wanted LeBron to be. Mean he's staying put. And you know he is it was a long way from winning the NBA title but he's rate. And people are going to sing is going to want to like him more. Because of what LeBron did. He's going to be I think the -- abroad and this year not Kobe Bryant Kobe Bryant's older got five titles that's interesting that's great Kobe Bryant as a mega star in the league and in the hobby. Not quite what I'm talking about the rant is the guy who stayed small. And it was good enough for him and people who wanted that from the broader going to see that in Durant. And wanna like him that that could not that that's not gonna hurt him in in collecting eventually. For him to grow we'll -- the champ probably that's how they do it in basketball but. I would put -- past and he's really good. So well another big money guy but time. That's sometimes where the the growth potential is in our economy. A lot of money collecting. I'm commons that just suddenly show up in our stars really. That's pretty rare. Here is -- next hi Danny.
And like -- don't and a -- around about twelve years ago and all other -- saturated but I'm quick question I know we're talking about quarterbacks. And and I got to just a real quick question about one autograph at a government he was actually confront were. Triggered panic and you're opted to two quarterbacks real quick -- Jay Cutler. No he's on the down side he had it kind of not peer but I think that's about I'm usually apply. There's actually below and they still got opposite star potential. And and Philip Rivers I read a great article I've done Oreo and -- do you think he's going to be like the next to him out. We're gonna have all the stats but no titles.
Boy this is it let me let me answer that quickly this this is the year for rivers I think I -- he's still pretty young but people have been ready for San Diego to win. And they really mean David made the Super Bowl yet so one of these years they're going to have to do it and I think where where the public is that with rivers in that team. Is that it it should be pretty soon -- it's not going to happen so he's good he's already pretty popular collecting. I'd be careful on him I think they have to win and if you think they will. And I would do that I like your point on color. He sometimes with this you you have to find the guys that people are down on. And he certainly is but he's real talented talented he's still young. In a big market I don't know how good that team is but if you like how the look at that team I think what you said makes cents.
Okay and then just got real quick question. Model except my dad knew a couple of traders are cast in a car accident fourteen bottom. I got some old they're actually black and white Sports Illustrated -- our progress. Wanted actually like sparky Lyle once Christian analysts. On your back in the seventies and one Yogi Bear some to wonder in the Yogi Berra one what do you think that were. -- economy. I know actually they're actually Sports Illustrated black and white photos full. Skiing or somebody that was involved with the team you and I asked them I still have them in the actual -- Kodak. Others like a codec.
