Good morning welcome to the hobby it is Saturdays September 10. Just after 8 o'clock I'll be here until nine. Short day for -- I've got open lines at 8030550. Or those -- have a question or comment about collecting and talk a lot about the bill's here on the show today. But I will not. Is there to do my best to not make it hurt. It's the oldest new show on the station hobby. And I'm glad to be here this is my fourth year with the show we had a dead cave -- Now were well into the mess you cholera. On this collar Eric your really do wanna. Break that up you rush that it becomes. Something else. Then the day and gave her. Not only we talk about cards your mom throughout we talk about cards her mom throughout and sometimes -- that her mom throughout. Although. While I'm starting to gain a fascination about the prewar stuff. I don't know anything about it -- I've never collected I think it's really interesting. But. What I need to do is get someone on who can who can talk assault through. Someone who knows there Turkey red cabinet cards from their sweet cap parole. Cigarette cards from their. 94 hours to their T 20 fives. It's a different language that even I speak with this collecting. But it's very hot. Friends of mine in the hobby who are more well versed and say right now. Where the action news is the 1880s. Its king Kelly and cap Anson that right now it's those guys that stuff. That is the most highly coveted and it's the busiest well that might not be right -- much of it there really is but it's what. The the real collectors right now really want. Is nineteenth century. And I've never I've never done that -- I'm still new -- -- -- this. You know what for a half. May of 060. Five and a half years I guess since I started collecting -- after doing so was a kid. -- -- -- that it that I've I've worked my collection and it ended. You know I've I've put it backwards I had. Eighty stuff and that I went into the seventy stopped and a 73 football's that would come along and 76 baseball that was very exciting in the latest I have that -- -- want to do more. And that meant it's the sixty's so -- Bought a 68 set once baseball and then. 64 hockey in the and kept going in the in the fifties and cola but I don't have all that stuff Bristol lots of polls assist. I have never gotten back to. Those -- a friend of mine was just selling some money -- about fifty. Greeted. T 20 six's. I think I know that march the orders Wagner. Set. And He insults fighter but He sold about fifty cards in one was a -- -- always really been curious about or wanted to have. The -- speaker rookie card I think 1911. Just -- speaker. Of course like way before our time but. One of the all time greats still the all time leader in doubles I believe. One of the best center fielders of all time. Different different web sites that. Have different formulas for grating greatness in ball players all of them seem to have true speaker very high like in the top ten but. You never hear about him. -- -- time giver hear about the old old timers if it's Babe Ruth and it's somebody's talking about you know his. His baseball prowess. Combined with his wild lifestyle or something here about Lou Gehrig you hear about. -- you hear about the Cy Young award. But not much not much else know the Wagner card holders Wagner's more famous for the card now. I think that any thing he's certainly one of the all time greats hornsby but when He ever would or are people talking about those those men. Not that very often true speaker is somebody that ranks just below. Those guys in notoriety. But that's so much necessarily in in performance. Or in caliber of player. So I like the idea that card a PSA for. All of the speaker rookie my friends sold one this week for about 500 dollars. And that's about where I'd like to get in that it's that's a high priced my friend did very well. A to do that well on his team to a sixes including that part of the average price for a card like that is closer to fourth quarter for fifty. But you know still that's something that appeals to me at some point -- I never have money. I just end up buying portable comes along and -- -- doesn't come along as a good deal at an awful Verona just kind of the way I am. One thing I'd like to focus on today is is the bills and in particular. This this. There's certain angle. -- AM five days a week are now in the fall six days a week in year. Often talking about the bills mostly in the month of September. You know the season this year goes like most seasons. Go then by. November -- wannabe. You know bouncing around more often maybe talking about the sabres a lot more Olympic probably. But who knows maybe it won't maybe this the bills will surprise. Never know. We we all else spend all this time or I spend all this time talking about. You know -- what the team looks like now in different moves they've made it's usually about different mistakes that have been made. But in terms of collecting making. Try to bring. The topic of the of the bills and their current state. You know to this show and make it somewhat useful for the show just thinking about. How. You might have and and I've had a couple of things. That I've been excited about a maybe you have to this decade. There were bills cards or or -- pieces what have you collectibles. You really were hoping. Would pan out the some of these guys that the bills have drafted -- had that. We've had high hopes for first round picks they don't. Show up as busts you know they they turn into busts Aaron Maybin for a couple months was a great idea. And then the first year like well what does -- mean he's now playing them lately here I thought it was a bad sign that He wasn't playing because the team more than good. In the next year wasn't playing at all that He was gone. -- Marshawn Lynch 2007. He's drafted -- York cited skill positions you know for the same reason I think that. To some extent the bills get sucked into the idea of drafting. The skill position guys Ralph Wilson gets sucked into this idea. We likewise get excited about them you know it's. The alignment. You can really tell. By the the war in the poor quality of the bills they have just not invested wisely or enough in. Their foundation in their lines. But you know when the skill position guys are picked religious -- when McGahee was -- certainly. I don't know about -- and also -- -- Roscoe Parrish for this but you know they've drafted so many backs and receivers Alvin's and James Hardy right first two rounds. With those guys are picked it's it's more interesting for me it's more exciting. It's not necessarily better and they haven't enjoyed any success relief from it from this strategy if you wanna call that. But it's it's more exciting when it happens you know it's a guy that you can imagine -- foreign you know just that of a skill position player. And when you're talking about cards right the these guys also generate a little bit more interest than your average linemen would. And I wonder if you had if you either pull the -- or bought somebody invested in somebody however you'd put it. From these last ten years with the bills. That -- looking back the stuff isn't worth very much. And you don't know what to do with that and maybe you can laugh about it. I have not been as big of -- bills fan as you may have been or may may BR. But on a couple of players of intrigue me McGahee did. Although I didn't go out and buy anything from Willis McGahee may be if I'd been collecting in 20032004. I would have but I wasn't. But I was excited about him and I was pretty confident you know we will take our guesses. I was pretty confident he'd be good. The best example for me though would be Trent Edwards. I -- I spent this show started in September of 07. And Edwards. -- soon enough. Became an interesting figure on the bills which are the talk about how Bill Walsh like men -- -- whether or not He might be good than bio wait. In September of course the bill started so well and Edwards was a pretty hot item I'm sure on this show and also on the the weekday show I spent more than a little time. Talking about his his autograph even with Trent one day on the show we talked about his autograph now He took pride in it. It was you know it's a nice little angle to talk about on the hobby I think. So -- remember with Edwards was the time when I was buying way too much new product it was 2007 finest football. And I bought a box of that and again and Adrian Peterson card and it it was an autograph after any thing He was the guy you wanted. If you're buying that product probably -- the biggest name and it. Didn't get him for autographs there was still you know the foil edges on that card it was such that I I decided it would be degraded. Understood it was really clean and I did an in the same box I pulled up a Trent Edwards autograph. And I was with a group of guys when I did it it was in bases loaded. I was with a group of guys and I did it and there were sort of joking about it you know there's this thing there's this idea with the bills that. Here we kind of we want tended to do well but you know you'll hear a lot of times people be making fun of them out in places this is one of those times so I pulled Edwards and you know people sort of the -- And I got almost -- to personally. I just. I like Edwards and at that time we had no idea whether it was good or not but I like the idea of them like the idea of a smart quarterback who hadn't. The difference for me. Edwards with -- with Fitzpatrick was that with Edwards we didn't know whether He could do it. At the NFL level but the idea of a smart guy who was on proven. I thought was really intriguing Fitzpatrick. While I do I I'd like everything I hear about -- Patrick and you know I I respect him simply good guy and all of that he's obviously got a good mind. I.'s background tells you that in you can hear him you know that comes through in his interviews I think as well but for me the struggle is that. He was on other teams that good teams but I -- credit they've looked at him as a known commodity as a player. So that's. Held me back from really embracing the idea of him being a star with the bills. And there's also you know what you see in games so with Edwards though in 2007. I didn't have that I was excited about him. When I got his card as an adult of course but I got his card I was very protective of it. And I I like the idea of keeping it -- it graded to beautiful autograph of course is Edwards always delivered. And I looked at that card is a real keeper. I'm gonna have this thing for a long time. I don't know if Edwards will be great but He should be the bills quarterback for number of years. And you know I've got discarding that it's got it made me feel good too because I had lost. Some interest in the bills and everything about them that I liked was from the old days. So here -- something from the current bills that I could. Show and enjoy having and it -- -- like I could I could use it as an example don't know I'm still in touch with this team and I still like that you know so. Here here's this Trent Edwards card to prove it. Well fast forward 2011. I don't know cards worth and I had agreed to attempt to back at nine point five photographed. Tops finest Trent Edwards rookie card I mean he's out of the league now right. He went to Oakland or to Jacksonville last year. And played a little bit didn't impress apparently went to Oakland this year was -- did He get another block after that I think at that point you're in trouble. When you. End up getting -- like that third shot in the NFL especially for young guy. I would think you know that that could be yet. So here I am with this cards though and I don't know. The point of all this is not to give you this long speech about Trent. It's just -- wonder if any of you who are collectors or even just bill's fans happen upon things from the last ten years of the team. That you you were really excited about like I was with that card or maybe it was just. You know you -- collector and you identified somebody or more than one guy even. That you wanted to collect because this was your team. And here was this new player and this is gonna be great. And of course in almost every case it hasn't been great. I'm also thinking about a guy who my sister knows. That ended up catching. Not you know in the end zone JP loss humans first touchdown pass. It was against Houston. And as you may remember it was wrong to Jason Peters. JP Austin's first NFL touchdown pass was caught by Jason Peters. On a lineman. Eligible play around the goal line the bills on the game 22 to seven. At five field goals against Houston Texans in this one touchdown. And whether it was spiked by Peters are just -- the crowd ever was this guy who my sister knows. Has had the ball or maybe store has the ball I don't know I don't know him. And you know again like for a minute or two that's a pretty cool deal we're excited about Losman. And you know the future is bright and if he's good like Jim Kelly was good of course each one of these guys were just one more guy further away. From the the -- the legend of Cali. Here's this here's this guy young prospect first round pick if the bills ever return to greatness. This ball. Or in my case this card will be great to have and it just didn't happen. So lost in AdWords lynch Evans that's a much Evans he's been good good enough. McGahee. Whoever. Have you got anything like that or is there -- any particular. Player. That you are you know as a collector or just as a fan you've got this thing from this guy game. You know you just -- Melancholy year or wistful about it. I'd love to know. Give me call you wanna participate. 8030550. Or 180. 552551. To tell you a little bit about what I've been doing in the wake of that card show that I set up that a couple of weeks ago. L a lot of times we end up talking about people call in a write in and they've just got all these old cards and often. To them you know that means the late eighties which is tough there's almost no demand for for a lot of that stuff although I do -- also tell you about one. Exception to that anti American I lord of wanna wanna make sure I share it as so often bulges. Say that stuff is pretty much all worthless some of it -- but anyway. What I sort of the do if you go back a little bit before that new we've collected say in the early eighties. What can you do with that it's not big money is it worth your time to organize it. Say I'll give you a couple of examples early eighties what should you do if the -- of your collection again I'm thinking about. People who had this stuff from along time ago they're not really collectors now maybe this is you. And you don't know what to do with that late eighties you can pretty much safely throw it out early eighties maybe you don't wanna do that. So all talk about that a little bit today too. If you've got a comment or question I would love to have you join me and call it with an 8030550. The number. I'm like -- and this is the hobby on WGR. Welcome back to the hobby everybody I might show. Glad to be here every Saturday morning. Talking about the hobby that I love card collecting memorabilia whatever the case may be I am not so much. In the memorabilia as I -- cards it has changed a little bit for me I was against. Electing autograph stuff when I started. And that's just a softened. On that so will come into a little bit more than I did but I think if I have a specialty it would be. A lot of the stuff that people call and about and email about which is cards from their youth. Whatever that might beat as I said earlier. If your youth is. You know pre World War II are specially pre World War I I don't know anybody listening you know goes back that far. How would I know you gotta give me that. That I am not sure how much I know I'm eager to learn more about the the nineteenth century stuff though in the early twentieth century because that sound it sounds like that's really where a lot of the action is. And if anybody has a comment on that can enlighten me. Please let me know 8030550. Is the number. I brought up. But the bills the last ten years or so. This eleven year streak they're out of missing the playoffs. You know Monday through Friday when I'm in -- with old blog and we talk and talk and talk about them. Everything is so well chronicled. About you know the draft picks that didn't work out in the different moves have been made just you know you know you know it all you know the history. But from a collectible standpoint it's it's more about the rookies. The draft picks that didn't work out and surely. There -- a lot of bills fans around here that with each of them. To whatever extent it was possible. They would these people the fans would go another try to get their autographs -- training camp. By the rookie cards. Whatever. Go to collect that player. And you know it's possible that I would expect that it's some collectors have all those guys. In in boxes whatever you know the people who really go after autographs. -- a lot of Aaron may be in her Marshawn Lynch or Trent AdWords or JP like all these guys what becomes of all that stuff. -- -- -- when we're here Monday through Friday it's about the players and as far as we talk about them they're quite disposable. You know we don't it's not personal interest is this guy good enough and then eventually Scott. -- traded and then that's the end of that. They go on their way we may be never talk about them again except in the historical context. But if you're collector and you'll love the bills and you wanna have more. For your collection and just. Great players from the ninety's -- of the sixties. Then. What are you to do. You don't know if Aaron Maybin will be abolished when he's drafted you don't expect it necessarily. Same with lynch same with Losman and Edwards. So what done. Poole who may be is that guy for you if you wanna join me and what what do you do about it. O'Malley have really the one card from Trent 2007. Tops finest rookie card and I'm not gonna celery thing as a really make much sense to do that now. What what it'll do for me is one night. -- happened upon it at home I'll just think about it may be in. And you know talk about this with myself sort of world that. 8030550. Don't put that past me by the way. 1888552550. Is the number of allotted a lot of questions that I get on the show is first the bills go. Are about. Well it's about the -- years and if these autograph programs are football's. -- things like that. I think you know as as it gets more and more. Is it becomes more more a part of the past. That the heyday of the bills. Like the idea of the big four Dirk took particular ideas I'd like. 44 bills fans who were listening that may be one. That essar with a definitive item. Because I'm not sure there is that. Something close to that for those teams. If it's just a generic thing it's not anything particular to a gain. Like a Super Bowl ticket or something. I like the idea if you if you can and find it of a picture of the big four guys together. Kelly Thurman read in Bruce. Mean those are those are your hall of famers although Reid isn't in yet may -- He makes it the other three are in they went in quickly. Put Marv Levy in their two if you if you what I certainly wouldn't make a point of omitting him if you get a picture of the five guys there. Autographed that's attainable. And that's a great. Idea for a bills collectible I think. It's nothing that I know of that's official or that was you know release although there might have been pictures I know there's a picture. Of Kelly He read Thurman and Lofton. Maybe it's Kelly read in -- -- pictures of the offensive guys that I see once in awhile and of course there are -- pictures. Of the offensive guys Kelly handing the ball to Thurman and -- you know whatever -- Kelly and read celebrating a touchdown things like that you'll see game pictures. But if you if you had a picture of the the real the true stars of those teams with or without Marv Levy who of course is in the hall of fame to. Or the owner he's uninteresting got to talk about as far as autographs go off to get now. I imagine. That sounds really great to me that sounds like you know a nice picture of those guys and whatever. The whatever point along the road. Would really I think it would be a nice piece. I also have like this idea I don't know how practical it is. But -- also like the idea before. Of -- to call it something a number line of jerseys from those bills teams. Kelly won two Thurmond 34 tally 56 Bruce 78 pants and 90. The Jersey numbers of those five guys if you had a wall big enough and those five jerseys may be alternating blue and white. Kelly Thurman tally Bruce Hansen. Maybe sign all in a rose -- of -- like that a number line -- I like that idea too. You can use that as -- -- might say. You know and by the way since that I'm sitting here talking to myself about bottled bill stuff. I wanna mention OJ to. You know that there's really is -- like I have that much more than anybody really has that much more to say. About OJ Simpson's. Place in history He or him as a collectible whenever I mean I I've always purity here opinions. Certainly an interesting topic though. As always He always -- suspense since since the murders He always has bad. In that you've got of course this all time great player. Not just a great football player in the way that. In the history the bills say Billy Shaw was great I mean this is OG freaking Simpson misses the most spectacular runner many fans have ever seen. Plate for any team. You know national celebrity. Everything there is here but you've got this you know quote problem. And you have to ask yourself if you want. To paying an OJ Simpson. Piece in your house. That the reason for displaying stopped his you know partly when people come over it's a discussion piece. It make you can make you happy to have it to look at it well doesn't OJ Simpson autograph do that. Maybe it does I don't rule it out maybe it does because if you grew up with his. Bills' career. Like bulldogs did. I'm thinking about him as a player is a fabulous memory. And it's also it's bittersweet now. But it's still enjoyable to I'm sure I don't I'm a little too young for OJ for I don't remembers as -- bills player but. If you do me that's a great thing to think about it reflect on but you know you've got the rest of so it's it's a matter of taste there I think. I just know that I wouldn't rule out the idea of having an OJ autograph if it's that I would want him I don't want him standing on the naked guns. You know I don't want him staining and MDC blazer for an account OJ Simpson autograph I'd want him running with the football as a bill. In neck -- uniform they're almost wearing again I want that. And I think you can live with that myself but it's up to US not a recommendation is just my opinion. 8030550. Is the number and -- -- line if you got a question or comment about collecting every Saturday morning. Guide dog a -- I don't know I don't. I don't article okay. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Dead -- them but boy dropped the ball at the -- lined -- but you've got you've got the blade. Not at all by. The boy. Okay He. Share. -- -- -- I would want to guess I I think wit with every autograph if you wanna you wanna check. Because you can do this on your computer. -- you know you don't have to have any kind. Special Passworder any thing you wanna go to eBay and search. The autograph. Because it's -- used it's a little better than the average one but because it's broken maybe it isn't. I think it's really a matter of how much the autograph -- were probably. I think cash it's pretty good though I mean -- autograph scope for buffalo athletes. He was one of the all time best and he's not around so. I mean it's it's a nice guy to have. Why outlook or that but -- -- Detroit. They're gone for 900 hour. But that I older deleted all the heat and you're law. No not really I think with guys who are expected to make the hall of fame doesn't change that much I think that's minds I think that's likely insanely high price for that. I would never guess a number like that may be I'd be wrong but. People ask there there are two different ways that this works -- there's the price that people ask for -- there's -- the price that yet. So check if you ever do another eBay search dog make sure you click completed listings on the left then you'll be able to seat that I might do it for X amount that is. -- -- euphoria -- you know what I find a right. -- lecture what do you what you're gonna you're out he'd -- in order. Signed. -- -- -- -- Our our -- -- I want your beat you and I thought that's what I remember unit. That edit it my worker. Yes but I'm asking is is an autograph that would using not not. What I would note that where are. Which logo is on. Are urged the -- sort. Yet has to be right -- on the view or the other one yeah. Not a lot. Are not a lot but you know whatever it's. It's. It's a shirt. I'll say that. I like month to door yeah I do remember I do remember talking to you before about them -- there's exactly a market. Four for jerseys like that you know a few dollars -- box I don't know. You don't with things I think with things like that even -- hash -- thing. You know were were up a small town comprised of many many sports fans or really I think more bills and sabres fans and sports -- I think we're largest relief. Really about our local teams as fans. I think the best way you could go about selling. Almost anything. Would be word of mouth. I don't think you wanna put an autographed Dominic cash ecstatic on eBay I don't think you wanna put a Steve -- or Jersey on eBay I think what you wanna do. Assuming there is no urgent need for the whatever couple hundred dollars that it might be worth all of it. I think what you wanna do is just tell people you have it and if ever someone. Seems interested -- it or you might say that you would sell it. Then you do that you know you're not gonna get top dollar that way necessarily what is top dollar if you've got something really unique. Well there's no degree of uniqueness if you got something unique. Then. Maybe it's a different story but it fits. Well local things at this -- sign that guy wore. -- just kind of think you're better off. Running into somebody. Who might want it don't we just sort of have these -- network of people a lot of armor -- the -- teams that were fans of that's that's what I would say. 8030550. The number thanks for the called dog it's the hobby I might show on WG art. Welcome back to the hobby eldest not bother right. I get too caught up in the wording in commercials. For my own sanity. All right but that -- we just heard it says you know life has it's moments like it's a good thing is that an expression for when things are not good. That always that having two kids Mike. Well it has its moments but it's rewarding. -- this -- goes. Life has its moments savor them. For jewelry. Am I wrong or what what what's what's the problem here what's it like having. John Lackey on your team well it has its moments but don't get it 200 innings. Right it's the bought and then the good part of times I wonder if people and ads is they don't know anything. -- it changed its support your hobby. -- to things to say let's make it about ads. With just one of ads for an hour each week boy I'd have more material. On that than any other any other subject probably said Tuesday. Okay let's go to Joseph next I joke. They might. I got a kind of a unique tired became a box of -- and patches. -- it -- James stark terror in the number number two out and it is an autograph it doesn't have you know uniform Petro anything like that. But -- it's helped start the guy that's in Western New York allowed during the offseason do you think could be worth that the try to get his autograph. Maybe you don't I'm not usually big on getting cards signed but that might be a pretty good idea -- If you're gonna get -- James Starks autograph Joseph my advice would still be. Depending on how good the players if you if he's a really good player I think you wanna get a Jersey or a ball. If you don't wanna go that far because it's not worth that much to you then. A picture and eight by ten. Something like that the card though and that level I think is an interesting idea assuming -- were just talking about like value. And that's the context. You know I don't think it's a bad idea. But you know if it's me I don't I don't get the card signed I would get something else -- Starks.
