They can be cheap when it comes to hiring head coaches and not. Paying off fired head coaches they can be cheap when it comes to assistant coaches may be scouting staff personnel even GM. But they spend money. On football players they make wrong decisions on guys they'll spend money now they won't be a big player in free agency. Make. Moves in three -- is not like they don't it's out there at the bottom of the salary cap every year -- Com. They spent a ton of money on Derrick Dockery and it blew up their face they spent a ton of money and Langston Walker. And it blew open their faith they'll spend money on certain players. And they turn out to be the wrong guys who isn't. They never spend money they're cheap. They'd spend Terrell Owens and make the wrong decisions now. Terrell Owens for no good reason extending Lee Evans. Who a lot of people were high -- have a problem with that. But they made -- -- they made him depending on how you broke on the contract or is he was one of the highest paid wide receivers in the NFL right and yes they were excited they kind of went all in on him. But. Obviously they didn't evaluate their situation -- their personnel to know that we're gonna be seeking a ton of money into a guy we're back and be able to get much out of you know whether it was their fault for not being able to maximize him in terms of scheme. Or whether he just wasn't as good as they thought he was so 11 way or the other they didn't evaluate him as an asset properly. We spend money and Shawne Merriman a pun but what five million whatever the heck it was -- it was a gamble that -- were for for now has blown up in their face Chris Kelsey I mean we're -- resigning some guys but then letting others ago you know week. And a good example that I spend money on Kelsey but you might look at and say yep but they spent on the wrong guy right. They didn't spend it on Jabari -- they didn't spend it long list yes we -- we probably shouldn't go through it you know it's been done before -- well well worn territory. But I think that that goes to the point they spent hundreds Patrick. Yeah -- that mean the good idea when who knows but they they identified their quarterback and say here here's 59 million dollars. And hopefully we'll spend an -- Jackson Stevie Johnson they gave a lot of money to different running backs yeah you know did them first round money deceit -- -- when they've had already. Given Marshawn Lynch most of his first round money early in his contract then with Fred Jackson on the roster. So. Yes it's. I do not totally buy into Ralph is cheap it's just become a slogan almost. But for me when if I'm going to buy into it we talked about it during the first hour. You wanna talk about when is when are you ready to buy into the bills as not being disabled bills anymore. You know is it when they get some lucky breaks to get the five and two and look pretty good and it on all cylinders and they're healthy they they haven't any significant injuries you had in. They're getting all the the turnovers. And they're not. Given the ball away. All right that's all well and good you you can't count on that as an organizational. Foundation you can't count on turnovers. And a absurd number of turnovers. Or plus minus -- you can't you can't count. Which you can count on is in the NFL is players getting hurt -- so that's when I say. When I will buy into the bills is when I see them change philosophically. As a team that will bring in quality depth players through free agency were proven guys or keep their guys and Garnett and keep their guys. Yeah and -- a great example. But also just spending money on. Back ups. Not just totally not just relying completely on waivers. On the waiver wire street free agents or late round draft pick us to fill out your roster right you need veteran players yes they do cost a lot of money because yet different minimums. They you have to hit -- -- guy's been in the league for five years which he's been in the league for however many years that the minimum salary rises and rises. But you need those guys John -- he's a guy that they cut a couple of years ago John -- -- might be the best special teams player in the NFL right now. He's been great for the lines -- Jim Leonard had a good career post bills with the ravens in the gesture as he was one of the first guys Rex Ryan wanted to bring to the jets with a when he became jets head coach he identified Jim Leonard. As one of his core players. And the bills decided they wanted Donte Whitner instead. So they draft Donte Whitner in the first round. Outside who can disrupt things can get to the quarterback. Can help out can plug things up your run defense forced some fumbles justice blood. Human being and outside linebacker considers it like shepherd I like Barnett. You need outside linebackers you can make place moats. Baton -- this team is using defense of linemen to play outside linebackers. Are holding Spencer johnsons and outside linebacker. They need big time help -- outside linebacker. I think you could take a look at their draft needs from 2010. And just use the same script over again -- tweak it just a little bit when it comes the offensive line because my thought going into this past draft was tackle or outside linebacker. Or quarterback depending you know Cam Newton was there I was all in on Cam Newton I thought that the music at the -- to pick. Or Andrew Luck was coming out you know the bills -- eagle quarterback -- That was -- if one of those two guys. And beyond that left tackle outside linebacker that's where it's that mean that the perimeter -- that's -- left tackles are so important is because outside linebackers pork in the NFL at today's game. So. There are offensive line has developed. They're playing pretty well. Despite injuries. And they have guys in there that are getting experience. And I think that they're getting better to the point that I don't see offensive line as critical. Need any more beyond that I think their needs are exactly the same as last year. I think that if there is a quarterback that they can get the should look at it. If there's an outside linebacker they should look at it if there's any. The defensive -- you know there's a nose tackle even you really have Daria sin and and -- Williams yeah so why -- and for all cornerback whatever the best player is there and -- best player available situation again which is I don't think we would've said that. In week seven week eight we we have been talking about okay we're looking for the missing piece. They're too many missing pieces. You'd be down to corners -- freeagent probably not coming back Mckelvin as I think played himself off the roster. So you can be down to and and looked straight points I liked but he's gotten beat painful at times this season they need help at quarterback make that argument. You're on hold. The column was magnificent if you never knew the guy you'd read that column and think you -- that you -- he was the best -- bragging so much about them. I know you guys put the benefit together a few weeks ago and obviously this is a very difficult time for everybody over the Buffalo News without passing. It is and it's a bit of double blow because his wife is the sports editor at the Buffalo News and she's been there for a long time and in many ways maybe an even closer to -- that I am with now because it's when I covered the sabres of course bill. -- covered the bills. So our paths would cross here in the air you know maybe idea in Orchard Park on occasion editor we have appears some time we get together and have a dinner. It we'd we'd. Crossed as like coworkers do. But his wife I would see on a regular basis and we would you know after deadline put the Paper. Grab some wings her have a conversation or whatever -- see her on more of a regular basis. You know my son. Mice at every night of his life my son has slapped with a Teddy bears that the Wilson's gave him when he was born. And hopefully I don't get too emotional here. You know one thing that. And I'm always gonna remember about -- happens to be his last words to -- And it bothers me that they were his that they were his last words to mean. Because it's it happened you know couple weeks ago and he was unable to speak again and wasn't conscience -- for the past. Past couple weeks ago. I'd go visit him in the hospital it was me. Talking to him usually. Reciting what was going on the NBA lockout door. You know the coaching moves that were being made turner -- be in -- go you know he's got going there and -- talk about your pocket huge boxing fans that didn't hear and in any of the stories about him and he was such as sports sportsman sports fan. That I I wonder if football might have been its third favorite sport and never asked him about that but you know he's huge basketball huge boxing. But anyway his last words to me came after the benefit and it was an emotional time at the benefit he got up and he spoke you were there Howard is great. He looked good I mean he. You both look bad and good he's such a big guy and he lost weight so he looked good because he lost the weight but he also didn't look right because he lost so much weight. But he said a lot of things from the heart it was emotional I didn't get a chance to spend much time with him that night because I was running the auction. But in my mind I thought. And have -- -- time to deal with now -- help them out tonight for the for the auction and that we'll talk you know some other time. And he found out the next morning. That his brother who was it is perfect match donor for his bone marrow transplant Allen had leukemia for those who might know. That's. The match you he had a condition also so -- the transplant was off the detected this previously unknown. Condition with his brother that transplant was off the next morning when he -- that right after the benefit so. Al goes from the high of the benefit -- up pouring of love and support. For him to this devastating news the next day that his transplant that he thought was gonna happen wasn't gonna happen. And still know what must have been very terrifying time for him a couple of days later he sent me an email. And he told me that he loved me and. In that that's the last thing that he said to him but. The one thing that I'm I'm happy about is my last words and -- I love -- too. And so that's why I put a thing on FaceBook last night I had I stayed away from social media all throughout the weekend when it. Analysts -- island house the death. But one thing -- wanted to post last night and it's something that I think is important. You know they say that. That you you gain a certain wisdom when your close to death. And he knew that he was facing death he thought he could be it I'm sure but he knew the reality of it -- his wife. Is that you. Find a certain wisdom that you may not express earlier you embrace this wisdom and I think that he felt it was important at that time to tell people around him that he loved them. And I'm glad that he did. And I'll never forget that and so that's why put -- thing on Twitter last night. Specially if you're a man to another man -- to -- work together. Not not just to man a black man and a white man. Two guys who come from two totally different backgrounds in the country. And we had a relationship in which we connect you know at least at that time to each other that we loved loved each. There's somebody in your life coworker friend. Make sure you tell me you love them even though there's a barrier there and that's -- tell this guy of them you know he's just my body my drinking -- -- my -- Whatever. You know. Nobody is ever going to accuse Allen Wilson being less of -- man. Because he told me that he loved me and I'm sure he told a lot of people send you probably sent you might even cut and paste that email he sent to me. But nobody can accuse -- would be in less of a man for telling people that he loved them and so make it a point to do that -- -- point to do ports to.
