Good morning welcome to inside high school sports Tony Caligiuri along with. -- Russo and Roger -- we also have a studio filled with coaches that we will be talking with in just a little bit to. Girls hockey will be on the agenda. This morning inside high school sports brought you by mighty taco. Mighty taco would go great right about now in UB orthopedics and sports medicine the team doctors for the Buffalo Sabres also available. For you in your family. Guys I need to start the shall offense has such a sad note part. We lost a dear friend. This program. -- we -- talking about it last week in. As just. You hate talk about this kinda stopping is just so sad part we do have two in our thoughts and prayers going out to the Williams will -- community and coach Jerry Geithner who lost his battle with cancer.
Yeah voice soft plastic -- a real big hit in the last month between. John -- injury get there I -- here is to me you automatically think -- softball by institutions yes I mean you know. It's hard to even visualize what -- Girls' softball and general high school softball. Would be without. The presence of -- trip from you know. Of course you're together the last few years and you know -- record speaks for himself law. You're good pitcher Western New York softball pitcher you'd probably have to go through some -- clinics and all that and I'm just not ready for this all this you know when you mention it to me a week ago. This is game -- for some personal bit overwhelmed us.
Well you know in the reason I -- you Roger and this is. You know not many people know this but when brought you -- the programmer -- on it in my game you know we're saying are we talked about how we're gonna. Cover sports in. Rajai signed June to girl's athletics. Especially with you know you love for basketball and and softball has -- ball in about about it you know and he's gotten to know a lot of these coaches you're responsible for bringing Jerry and as -- as so many times on this program and you do such a great job covering it so I'm sure.
Even -- a little bit more of because you were so close. Has had a real -- still awfully strange. You know come this spring and knowledge to -- softball game when you walk in the Williams rowand you know. Some catches in the residual worst jury. All this right you know in. It's. It's hard to distract -- and I you know I feel bad for Julian the rest of the family Collins daughter -- law also law assistant coach enough. We'll -- Arsenal Latin yes. Again and I feel sorry for. Thousands of high school adolescents in Western New York free real adolescence that would've gone. Through jury directly or indirectly in the pursuit of their softball. Career. -- talk to a -- fails wall's dad. Over the summer and mentioned how she just -- year. And what he meant to her and I'm sure. A lot of the former players well especially -- for red -- 2004. And 2006 they were state champions. Lauren was probably had one here. And now what a lot of people go realizes. -- prowess as a pitching coach or pitching teacher. Matches is coaching and all that fact there were ten to reach -- you've had no business even finishing 500 and took him to law. Section finals. And mets' coaching me through coaching at all about what. You figure well. First they Richard come to my wanted to get a jury get there in recent years would be Chelsea Clinton you know odds it's it's a sandy and he's going to be sorely missed. Michelle Friday another one the list of names could go out and and we -- or shall dodger manager dinner but they are. Felt sympathies goes onto the family and you -- a personal standpoint he's going to be sorely missed.
And trillions. I know I mean just along the lines to disagree you know coach and a great mentor student athletes in general and you know you could see was a south very. You know prestigious academic school and that was always in the first precedent those teams were always with class. They won with class and I think that's a lot and you know again it goes back to coaching -- in Jimmie Johnson had a great quote. He said everything that you see on the field is either direct reflection of what I allow him to do or what -- coach. And you can see that the way to weasel south programs always handled itself. Is a direct reflection on what Jerry stood for in athletics in general but in teaching young athletes as well.
Yeah and also we have to extends sympathies to the family of grand river long time off football for a show law. She is Jamie you know your -- Florida and vacation playing golf and all that legacy in a massive stroke and he was in intensive care and of course -- Sectors of -- major Arabia is just as well off somebody up there was concern about Armon. Did the right doing it as a way to Porter and all that put 43 years I believe something like that I do like to be -- refereeing put up with. Fans and coaches. Ridiculing you can instantly for 43 years the.
On the funny story about him is he grew up around the corner in Cheektowaga. From my father Ernie he's a good -- with Brandon -- he knew my grandfather very very well. If he's to wrap my dad's games at Saint -- way back in the day and I can get the dates to 1976 to kind of from a data on the table. But at the same time here's what you need to know. He raft to -- game my junior year which I played and we are up highlights I got -- and and Don. He he was wrapping that game two was so I was kinda cool that he not only officiated game that my dad played and having known my family but officiated game that I actually got to play and so I was kind of a cool thing that shows you how many years he's been around it as well so I definitely a big loss on. You know for this area and it's just it's been a tough month I don't know he has.

While although we normally talk to him about full ball. -- true lose your head coach at. Riverside high school and Tony you're now involved with the cross as well as. Start not vote across for the city of Buffalo now it -- now it's a club sport last year you guys had your. First season and -- are you ramped up for your second.
Agreement Horry -- great coach you. -- thanks for having me -- I am and -- I usually talk about before -- it's going but. You know I'm excited to say that this is the second year of the program. And to be out with -- terps almost full season last year we were considered an exhibition team and I think it was. Basically if you -- for all the kids in the city of Buffalo to get an idea of the sport because there's a very. Sportier Buffalo. And I ought to be quite frank with you were excited about the upcoming season.
Excellent now sure a lot of kids still don't know about this. They wanna get a hold -- we're gonna talk to several times. Before the season starts and wanna get as many kids interest -- get them signed up to experience the wonderful game of lacrosse how did it. Interstate kids out of the -- in touch it and who's eligible to play and things like that.
Well right now everybody the city of Buffalo from our seventh grade and up who they are senior year eligible. I'll worry we have one very large cheap right now they sure we had forty kids and the team is basically it whether. -- was more -- clinic. Then it was ran like eight true varsity JV sports. This year mr. arbor -- from funding to provide us with C -- and university programs so. That's going to be the developmental stages these young players and then. From there -- they can get the check with me directly at mutually shouldn't awful public schools at Riverside all we error. Do we need huge email blast with all the physical education teachers than than not. Through our our only expressed there in the city we're in their posters up and everything like that -- Basically we start march 1 with introductory meeting. And then on March 5 I believe that that Monday we are going full go with -- over at Riverside high school. So -- give a lot of posters around the high school and elementary schools. And now more open really really good article obviously -- your shoulder and the Internet then you go to the web pages. That these kids get the word out now hopefully trying to get something with the ball will be at -- headed their front lobby. And I just hit a pollster and sit there and it's airy answer questions and repaired some. There are like it because he's in its schemes and you know yesterday went to one in the -- is I think it was straight CW Jeter or something like every apologize. To their club but you know that was young kids play in and now. Fact we got to do what Buffalo operate expanding Merritt athletic programs are you looking intellectually very soon so I mean this is just one more step in the right direction. For the city of Buffalo athletic.
It's it's certainly is and it's very exciting. -- keep us up to date and again any information that we can pass are we will be glad to do it we can put down our FaceBook page or website. And things like that best of -- you'll talk to assume.
Thank you Mary do you agree we are you totally you know I won't take a break we're back we're gonna talk -- hockey. We've got several coaches and it was a not an easy process will talk to the coaches. How they overcome the obstacles that it took to get the girls on the ice in the success. That they are having met -- is next with 20/20 sports.
I've just got to grind it out to some metal -- Q Mack -- he knows me very well. Is that I school sports story Caligiuri -- Bruce -- talk getting ready to talk about girls federation hockey. And join us in studio. Personal -- monsignor Martin Rick Hopkins. Was the assistant chairman and -- coach is the wings -- team. Jim Ryan from the Amherst last week home squad. In studio to talk. Talk about girls hockey but first we want it they built a ball or my FaceBook friends who helps set all of this up. Through -- and -- it pays to via FaceBook. Eric talk of back and forth about. Girls hockey east is a you know -- give the -- some exposures. All right let's do it he set us up with our wonderful coaches who were kind enough. To come in and few. Heard the name bill won't you might -- the name of -- Billy's ice cream so keep that in mind. Rick Hopkins -- with few years assistant chairman and we also used to play softball back in the day with your wife when. When a -- yen and 12 point five were located on home what avenue. I used to work at the pleasure working with your wife so. No new go back a few years and it's great to have you in studio. I do recall when all of this was getting going that there are a lot of hurdles for you guys to cross especially financial hurdles in convincing. Districts that. Putting in sponsoring girls is a great idea let's talk a little bit about that. Now it it was a long long wrote it took about six and it appears to it to make it all happen I was. Travel.
Tournament on an Ithaca. Six and half years ago and was approached by the only merry Granger who had actually started the other girls -- of -- dollar -- the lead in the state that started back in 1998. And they were looking to expand to Western New York so. She kind of planted the seed in singles -- Nichols the only school up there that's playing varsity hockey with all the travel programs you have an all the youth in the house leagues you have so. -- I came back and through my connections with the Great Lakes or girls hockey league. Was able to talked to some other people that. And you shared the same passion. Four ice hockey in the head you know daughters -- we're just big girls hockey fans in. You know they they hit the ground running and went to there school boards and you know doctor Jim -- and from Williams who had a big part of it he he gets an exhibition games. Slated for us at the Pepsi Center three years ago. That really showed. Anyone that had any doubt about the playing ability that these girls you know certainly could play. In that the interest was there in the in the passion in the sustainability. And but -- you know took some convincing in you know. The success of the voice federation certainly helped as well I mean he started back with only eight teams in 1990 unity throughout the 26. So all I'm. We've we've looked at the -- districts and had boys teams in in knew that there was enough girls playing there either you know Housley tacky or travel. That we Canada make it happen numbers wise. The other piece of it was the financial and in finding ice time which. We were able overcome those hurdles in it's it's amazing programs like -- it -- sweet home. Know fully funded by the players in the parents were -- about other programs. Ten more and west Seneca Williams though. Are funded by the school district itself so. It was a long road this is our second year we lose any teams which was huge -- huge thing we didn't gain any reached you know we hope to expand and get bigger. Every year. But the girls can play in there it is in there having blast in the the youth leagues the other commissioners I've spoken to that that on the youth leagues -- the numbers are up for girls playing youth hockey union it's great possessed the feeder for you guys absolutely in dye is the the level of play is is outstanding. Very competitive games and you know there is this the first season went real well three or four of our playoff games are decided by a goal one of them was in the overtime. To -- went to overtime actually and in this -- this thing you know others. Lancaster is is struggling a little bit -- hats off to them they're the only school district going it alone were the other while the other six teams are combined. But we're making it work in its attribute to the parents it it went out like -- won't overhears it ten more. I'm Isabel Posner got immersed in sweet home. Kind of up and running in how let me ask you in in Williams though and in regain -- with the monsignor -- and that was a big project in itself getting you know twelve. Catholic schools -- Catholics who also agreed to a to make it happen so. Two years in. It's going strong and we're looking to expand maybe the city of Buffalo next year's talked about a team and hope in Rochester jumps and consider kind of a couple years haven't they had an exhibition game seven years ago and my guess the financial. Tough times -- Rochester -- before Buffalo and they haven't been able to get that teams up and running in Rochester but the seven teams we have the year. Very competitive and it is exciting hockey if you've never seen your psyche it's. More of a finesse team than the boys because there's there's nobody checking out there there is incidental contact here and there but. You know pretty freewheeling wide open skating because of the lack of a body count more offense or defensive minded. Other girls. You guys can jump at it and that's on the game in you know life style right. How how many teams are in right now. We have guys seventy Avant and see how many games do they play we play each other. Three times for a total of eighteen regular season games and then we have -- playoff format where that the top team gets a bye in the we have the other six playing a quarterfinal in the semis in. In the championship in we're open down the road rule will be a state championship. Taken and the winner from the from the other league in the statement. You know the teams get to know each other pretty well and that's another thing that's kind of unique about -- team's three times you get to Norman. Where it's real it's receive a lot of the girls that are. It different high schools are teammates for their travel team so there the plane together on the weekends and then playing against one another during the week and that that makes it. Especially as well that the respect the girls have for one another and it knowing that they had to band together to make this happen I mean there's only seven teams and they're all sisters and they need. The need to be a big happy family to make this thing you know continue as we wanna get to -- nineteen next year we don't want to be going in the other direction as you guys look -- bad lean with clubs as far as getting girls to maybe. Okay don't play the club team play the school team.
Now and I haven't seen that yet I think a lot of the girls now they really want to play and -- high school team and think you're seeing. At least an art and our group this year we have girls who just don't wanna play traveled -- high school. It's a quicker season. There's less travel their friends can show up. And it it's something where they're not travelling every weekend out of out of town to tournament here and there were playing in the middle of the week in front of their friends so it's something I find our girls really enjoy.
Plus that -- am sure that it's you know it's a big deal to be and we school's colors and and things like that. Now and let me ask you this Jim you've got Amherst slash sweet home. How do you decide on the collars. It's actually decision that was made early on in the process when they did we showcase game and this Nancy -- you lose. Recently retired and was a great ambassador to get this started as well as she did for the boys federation. About her and Chris DiMarco. Came together and they decided on a caps I guess between the panther in the tiger of Amherst -- is. A pretty natural fit sheriff in order with the colors but -- I would about with you Jim I mean with a wrecked with.
Are you south east and north south east and north and that's in a challenge that I think everyone pretty much. Faces except Lancaster because they're the era of the only team the only school involvement -- team but. On the other coaches you know we're we're dealing with girls that are let's face it arch rivals in other sports possibly you know soft ball. Lacrosse soccer and but a lot of them like I said -- each other through the house -- in in travel over the years and you know it it makes it a challenge because you're not. They're not under the same roof all day long and I think a big part of it a team -- is -- might be you know sitting at the same cafeteria table or see each other in the halls where. You know I've dead middle schoolers on my team so I have you know girls coming from six different. Schools for practice in indoor game and it. It can be challenging and you know we're hoping eventually the numbers are there were you know -- can have an east and west team the same with west Seneca and you know Williams who can have an east north and south teams. -- ever since we don't can divide up until that happens. Mom you know you're seeing a travel. Caliber level of play. Which is which is exciting and -- like Chris said it's on the it's a shorter season which I think it's been a big help in. The travel programs in the high school league you've you've worked well together. The high school league is pretty much of a Monday through Thursday. Adventure may be Friday game here there were the travel hockey news is mostly on the weekends but sometimes you have girls that have. Practices. You know too -- high school practice and then have to go to their travel practice so. The demands are pretty high but these girls have you know some of them and waiting a long long time to -- to earn varsity letter in -- hockey.
A Christian or -- from pretty large pool with all the my senior -- schools. Are you get a pretty even distribution among the schools or is there's some schools that just. You know feed more players to U com basically we come. And this year's team we have we're represented by eight different schools. And I have eighteen players into the schools and are no mercy have eight of its almost half my team is from two schools are well yeah so and then it goes down I mean to sooners a Lancaster a one. -- a lot of one. But Sam won. -- to holy Angels two and sacred heart three. Now that tough organizing practices when you're bringing. Absolutely absolutely calm like Rick said the demands. Of having a different schools that's they're a little bit different times some of the public schools practice it. 5:6 in the morning we can't do that because I have girls coming from the north towns all the -- under the -- counts so we have to practice after school. And basically it's once a week trying to find a common time that are comedy it's all the girls from eight different schools and wants.
That is one heck of a challenge us and of itself do you. I let's take a break when we come back we're gonna get to know some of the top players find out which teams. Are doing well and if you have any comments or questions feel free to call and an -- 30. 550. Back calorie snacks which which when he sports. One last segment of inside high school sports and then it's -- you know we'll be taking your calls. At 11 o'clock great here on WGR Sports Radio. 550 feels kind of funny -- mentioning Sabres pregame receivers game it is good riddance he kicked it. Hope it's good to a good time to take a break talking and girls hockey game. Our. Chris Lackey monsignor Martin Rick Hopkins. Williams built team in Jim Ryan campers slash sweet home team our guys this is just open my time a starch out -- all the players. For small. Some of the top players in the league if you guys just -- mentioned players on your team we'll start with you Chris. I was told mentioned --
Out that way now. And now they're listening but -- really there's interested -- yeah. There's three or four on the -- start my three captains. My only senior -- terror more. Faster and great season. And Juliet you cat runs -- defense kept. And leading scorer of the league last year was Rachel's house Angels another great four in the three girls. They pretty much run our team. In the locker room in the lead by example. And in trouble -- dimension Rachel miner and we picked up sophomore. Another real good girls girls look up to and good leaders. And help you obviously is you as you grow. I was him and that player for a young players absolutely out of that group only once in. On the -- juniors sophomores. -- your Bard isn't shields and play -- the -- basketball team -- and only just leveled out his -- and yet there's -- anything you know when that -- sleeper bureau work at and that's correct because it's proudly announces. That she's probably and I -- soon to know -- look at are we going Cortland. On to play hockey possibly and she she's accepted three or four different colleges as a deciding which Utley Rick and I were talking in the break. -- Soccer basketball hockey. Or roller wasn't to ship him -- ball players in no way he is doing John I remember him. Let's switch gears to Jim talk about your squad and -- far and away coach.
Sure we have our three seniors that were present Amherst high school -- Cyril O'Brien who was an all -- New York field hockey player from who also plays for -- travel team I think probably one of the better. Female athletes have much New York I'm Katie freak who's a soccer player -- from -- it's also going to. Played College Soccer on that court -- for pneumonia. And family people lose an outstanding lacrosse player and one of our leaders. Who plays defense for us for sweet home so our better players we have Caitlin -- a Madison case there. -- some really young kids that are in the real good next couple years and -- things who's a seventh grader who. Among hoping is going to be hopefully one of the better girls in our league in a couple of years so. We've -- great young group with kids and journalists all the coaches have mentioned you know were really fortunate that we've kids that are. Hard working kids that do really well schooled in a lot of girls practice early in the morning our practices. Lot times started 530 or six column so. You know the kids who work hard in school and they're great kids and were really fortunate to -- was. Part of our programs that dedication is what blows my mind away.
He's gonna say that's fight for your people listening or listening carefully this 530 or 6 in the morning. --
And yeah whereas some kids are just getting up and remind you that you're usually at the -- what coach Yemen there about 45 minutes half hour before -- get dressed and not usually in the morning -- there about fifteen minutes for they need to be on the eyes but. Like you you know aside it's a huge commitment for kids and they're in school and their home rooms -- for both schools by 730 so. They get off the ice and get themselves ready for school Owens on the commitments pretty extraordinary and I think that's what makes our league so great is that parents and kids have really. Invested and kind of keeps him grounded and humble and hopefully will grow as large as the boys federation has become the last couple years. -- your turn.
Alright well I'm -- obviously very blessed to be -- from three. Three high schools and that's certainly helps our roster and in hockey crazed community to like the town of Amherst the success of the boys -- again this help the girls but. I got -- a very good goalie she's always soft courts recently ASCII agree travel resonated. Are starting goalie last year was a senior went down in the play the last regular season game listen -- had to step in as a freshman and did a great job in. You know that she's that the backbone of our defense and we have a senior mom Julie at home to set a strong. Very good athlete. You know deciding -- US doing counts field hockey lacrosse or rice sack union in my opinion she probably deal all three of -- she wanted to it -- to be so -- you know she's she's strong and and I had our captain and we -- and other senior from -- north and -- she signing with mercy Hurst on Wednesday's for. Field hockey and lacrosse which I'm sure is -- disappointing a lot of like collegiate ice hockey coaches who would love to have her. With her speed in in her her leadership and she senators to freshman that were actually eighth graders last year on -- our top line as well a cirrus Coleman. Freshman from Williams police asked one of the fastest roles on our team. And I jordin rates or another freshman from Williams Lisa were. Where young. But if we have good good blend of senior leadership and in and in youth which which helps because. You know the league we wanted to grow on and continue the girls that are coming out but there's. A lot of other talent DeRozan in the league. I keep Miller from ten more. Outstanding player -- the opportunity culture and travel a few years back in. She was first team all Western New York last year as -- was -- and you know from west Seneca and -- Berger senior. West Seneca didn't play less years -- junior but she believes the leading the federation and in scoring this year so there is a lot of talented hockey players in its scary that -- aren't the only senior retirement senior guard them.
If you -- you and yeah even throughout that -- I mean we've talked to all three of us at the athletes. I mean we're just not hockey players these girls are athletic exactly it's it's pretty amazing when you you know you come to a practice and they're win -- soccer. You sweatpants or softball or basketball. Of these girls are athletes they all play multiples.
How long and I think you mentioned one that are gonna play that you mentioned or it's going numbers seers. It's going hopefully. Field hockey and lacrosse it's the probably -- It overlaps the spring sports it overlaps -- fall sport so all. You know if you're involved with -- ice hockey is pretty much restriction any others so this way it must be there for you guys to pick up these multi talented athletes that draws so we're like your partner. Good luck as you guys who have great Jeff.
