Hi everybody good morning this is the hobby on WGR. I have this strange feeling that I'm back from something. Because they haven't been in here on a Saturday in a couple weeks or three weeks. But. It was a week ago owning up backs so while to figure that out. I just did something that turnout be hilarious wanna tell you about that. How -- you everybody. I am I -- coming off one of the most. Interest thing. Food days eating days of my. My recent past. This is nothing bad I mean I like everything I -- but man I did not. I did not consult. Any kind of healthy manual or anything yesterday. And a big pride should be chunk once yesterday on Friday I have my kids from for the day and night. Like to go out to eat with them so -- have that and then we went to a remote yesterday -- -- by the by the stadium. And they provided us with this famous Reuben sandwich they make like -- decision beat this. And then Greg Balkan Bulldog and I went out for a fish pride that we checks and yikes. He's hoping to get through today I am glad to be anywhere today after that so I mean it was all good but I'm. Didn't exactly mix in many vegetables or any. So speaking of food. On eBay this morning. In that I've been had not been here for the show since three weeks ago I heard about something. Right around the time. Of the first of the two weeks from -- collar filled in for me. But that wasn't here to really discuss it -- would have been just fine in the afternoon show I guess. This chicken nugget. That was supposedly. It's totally resembled George Washington's head. And sold on eBay now. This is not the first such thing to come down the pike. Board items or. What covers this or that it looks like the virgin Mary in -- you've heard about stuff like this before probably. A woman. Tried to sell. A chicken nugget that looked like to her George Washington. I'm looking at the picture right now and if you try really really hard you might a same person might be able to be convinced that it does look like George Washington. And she decided to try to sell on eBay to raise money for her church. And you know of course what -- silly idea right 8100. Dollars. Seriously. So go ahead search. Washington -- nugget. On eBay I'm always thought that you know using eBay for. Finding out what that autographed hockey stick or something you have might be worth. Here's another fun use for -- Washington -- nugget another one. Sold. For 5100. Dollars. On the same day not related. It looks to me like a diamond. Not a president. So I don't know but if you look up look up and down this list. -- Romney chicken -- nugget -- clause. Got a little -- on it. Ron Paul. The Ron Paul and Santa Claus and Mitt Romney guy totally of all the same guy from the way these are listed and photographed. Started by asking 2000 dollars then went to 1000 dollars in the went to 700 dollars and sadly. Note takers about a chicken nugget that looks like Jay Leno. Or Michael Jackson. Or how about up piece of a red pepper that looks like Keith Richards. Or a potato chip that looks like a heart. I like the last one Washington quarter that looks like commit nugget some key talks to the picture of a quarter. And and put up -- eBay minimum bid 25 cents a dollar shipping would you buy that which you by a quarter for 25 cents. What could be here all day. Thinking about that which you by a quarter for 25 cents. This -- future quarters pulling it. And the top one on the list you search by highest prices. Egg it which I guess is is a stone AG AT I don't know a lot about what bag it is I -- -- work aggregate. And is very small tight in the newspaper from a editing days. -- that looks like ET. 245000. Dollar minimum bid no bids. But I like the picture of this rock on a bicycle. Just to further. To further that ET. Thinking there but put let's put a picture of this rock and a bicycle doesn't cost a lot to list the stuff you might just get a kick out of doing that you can less than giving. Well the catalyst anything I suppose but. You can take a -- Claim it looks like Mick Jagger or something. And listed for a million dollars and a photos all of Acosta is the price the listing which is -- really that much. So well fought with eBay to start the weekend. Ask about autograph card whatever I'm more -- collected an autograph collector although. And a little bit about autograph session even opiate and so in most cases. Anything you wanna talk about relating to collecting. I'm I'm happy to hear from 8030550. Is the number maybe I can tell you where to sell something or how. I think even those three weeks ago I think I did or remember for sure but I think they did talk about. In my thinking lately with my collection. And selling I've been thinking about selling Som that ball crosses my mind that I I know I mentioned on here on the show. This is crazy idea lately of selling. Most all of everything I haven't and going to buy a car in and paying with cash. Being able to drive away in some -- to meet an intoxicating lead exciting idea but. The the reality is. This is common sense I think if you're going to sell a collection. Worth whatever amount of money. To a dealer somebody's in the business of buying them. Then connected to come close to the that close to the real value that collection it depends on what it is. -- a book can tell you or -- can tell you. That two different things are worth 500 dollars each day but one of them is. A graded Mickey Mantle card and the other is a run of a football sets from the 1980s. If you consider that an item. And the dealer is going to have a much easier time flipping the Mickey Mantle cars are making money off of that depending on what they pay you for its not gonna be the -- out. Then that the run a football sets that's a lot of work. And there are just not as many. You know not as many people can't -- them thinking that as many people in the market for that -- that may not be true but it's more work. And the other item even though it's worth the same amount of money in -- sale. You don't generally. On the other item has more appeal so the easier to liquidate. Your collection is the more money you should make. If that's if you have a collection of of old -- cards -- war means something that's highly coveted. Worth again same example expose X amount of dollars which and then you have this other collection just. Half a million cards from the from the seventies. You're gonna do better in -- to a dealer on the first thing it's easier for them better for them. So I -- I've just been thinking about like what kind of strides can make in this in this area I've got too much stuff. Maybe some of -- -- collectors of noise noise I hear a lot of I hear from a lot of people who were not just sort of passing by the show and when asked about this or that that they have sometimes. Of course a lot of collectors to listen to the show and maybe you've had some experience with this when you wanna sell what do you do when you wanna fill out your collection what do you do not sell at all necessarily. But some of it. It's hard that the best course of action probably. For. Making the most money getting the close closest you came into the real value of it. Is to sell yourself piecemeal online. You know one thing one thing pictures listings shipping. All that kind of thing and that's just a lot of time. So you have a decision to make between how much. Of a discount you willing to take. -- How much time and effort you wanna put into selling everything yourself if you stretch stretch out the project over a longer period of time and you know the amount of pepper you're putting into it may not seem as daunting you can just sort of budget -- maybe this is a good idea budget what your what your plan is your thinking is for that so I am this is something that even when I was on vacation. I was thinking a lot about what to do what happens for me is. -- I tend to be. One to buy on opportunity. I hardly ever think about -- really like this one thing. And then search for a and get it will do is broader searches. By minute card store which is often enough if there's something there and the price seems right and I'll just do it without much regard to what I collect what I have even sometimes unfortunately how much money I have. At a given moment soldiers. The light goes on. This is a good idea this is a good investment boom it's done. And you know you end up with two problems. From that that's just the way I do it and that the beat myself up over it you end up with two problems over. One is you can have a lot of stuff and just sort of builds and builds and builds and if your house is getting bigger. And why should be then you can rent a room. Not only is my house not getting bigger but now I have two kids and their big toys take a lot of space and our extra rooms are -- now so it's just like you know everything sort of shrinking the walls are shrinking in my house and the other problem difficult problem. Is that you don't really have anything to personal. If you do it that way recently bought a John Elway. Autograph John Elway helmet real one because it is thought price was so good and I mean Elway is. A sure thing. And I I loved the look of it just okay. But about a nominal -- fan particularly. There really wasn't much reason to do it other than it seemed like a good the good deal. So that's that's right it caught sometimes -- regret buying that that's saying that but. You can end up with a lot of stuff -- -- with them -- sort of a random seemingly random collection of -- things this way to make a point. From the away example. About Mario Williams and about them about sort of a theory about collecting. And his one listener told me in response to something on Twitter. A theory about life maybe is is interesting. Here the bills who have a hundred million dollars in the one guy. And as we've talked about all week. The seemingly way out of character type of move -- stunned by the bills being so grass. And you know. Willing to spend that money. It was a stunning exciting development this week now say the bills have. A hundred million dollars to spend. Over however many years in free agency and they have the option of putting that money into however many players as they choose. It can be one player in this case which is what they did. Or it can be ten or fifteen relief you know low budget guys for football that -- don't command much attention. What should they do would you rather have ten guys who salaries amount to a hundred million box one. And in my in my mind one is easily the right answer what they did in my mind is the right is the right move. And it doesn't really pertain to Mario Williams. Specifically. But it's just about it's about stars and difference makers in sports. Guys that make two -- three million dollars a year. Are pretty interchangeable and sports that aren't football they are and hockey hockey teams I think their results come down to a couple of players. I'm looking to trade Paul -- that. And now. Really suffer and that's not even the best example are examples every year and hockey of good players traded at the trade deadline and their team's results really don't change. Because they're not worth that much. Third largest OK you focus on what their strengths are their weaknesses. And you know look -- feel like it's gonna -- when you lose a guy like that but it really doesn't you put somebody in -- comparable and you just move -- So what are you wanna do we have a salary cap -- sport of sixty million dollars in hockey -- whatever you haven't football bubble that. You want I think you want. It to be top heavy. Where you have two or three guys are maybe 45. That command most of that money and everybody else is you pick. Guys like that you -- And the categories like that rule players just do not that need to be highly paid. And that's what I that's what I would do I would do exactly what the bills did and I would do it again and again. You know they they have the money they pick one player deported into and I think that's Smart now how about as collectors. It is -- is the logic the same should the logic be the same. I think probably in this has come up on the show a lot and this is not something that I have accomplished in my collection really. Com. Stars big names the top of the line. I got back in the collecting in 2006. An idea of spending say five grand on something. Was and really still is just completely. Daunting. Unsettling idea 5000 dollars put it in my mortgage. -- put it into a car like whatever just house I I immediately think to do something else with money like that don't generally. By what you probably. What advice I would give you if you if you are a collector or you are thinking of becoming one. Advice I would most certainly give you is. If you have the discipline. He can figure out what kind of money you can afford to spend in collecting. Is -- for a for a period of time just save it put it aside it's not easy for me. Put aside and then wait for the opportunity. To buy something big. Because that is where it's that that is words that in collecting that is words that in sports. That maybe is where it's that in in anything. Save up for that. That league purchase you go shopping for a particular car and you're like me get into a mood. And you just want something so you go shopping for a particular car in the place you go to that your counting on having it. Doesn't have that day they just sold one they have the wrong color they have the wrong interior whatever it is what do you do. Ask yourself what do you do when that happens whether it's a car or shirt or anything what do you do I think what I tend to do what may be most people do I don't know. Is spend the money anyway you party. Gotten in the mood you've got an -- bought into your car going out to buy the thing. You're ready to do it you're prepared to do looking forward to doing it and having it and taking -- home and then it's a let down. What it's not there so you know what I what I tend to do is to say okay well this is the best I can do right now -- -- ready to do it so here. And really mean is it. I guess I don't ask don't just say in my mind the other option is is better week for whatever it is that you really want. Really it's -- -- two different points but the one about collecting is that stars are really I think the way to go. And I I still remember Paula got in your may be two years ago. From a guy we're talking like we're talking about this kind of thing and a guy said Dora put my money I've been Jackie Robinson. -- -- in Satchel Paige. Sandy Colfax Babe -- I supported him it's like medical practice and oil analyst -- does. I -- clinic to guys like that because. That's where I feel is there's the most potential for growth. It's pretty rare. And it's interesting. To talk about in my house like it's an interest in peace for people that. Deceased so that I think makes a lot of sense and for all the value there is in in rod crew. And Earl Campbell. The though the way to go is you know the big the big time. Paying attention to hockey you wanna you wanna try to line up with sports you know when the when the sport is getting the most attention. And that's rocky right around now I think. Also like autograph collections the mini helmets that I do. It's really about putting it together so that that's part of the fun of collecting and neglect to mention that because is that all about just. Finding some thing or group of things that has the greatest chance to appreciate. A lot of the fun is in. Putting things together putting collections together so you're definitely right hey -- -- What what he worked to get the man decent ball and what are you gonna do it if you don't mind me asking. Well I'll tell you that it be. Concerning -- I. That's somebody who knew that I collected. And they contacted me and consider you know I've got the ball and you know our interest it and it outside I ended up being in I think it was right around 3000 dollars work. My guess is probably worth more than Matt and you know makes you wonder you really wanna keep something like panorama out. If it's a good question well yeah I I would think it also be worth more its single sign layer. Getting the cards out and flipping through amen reading the backs. But just sort of seeing worm that all the time I love to do that that's the fun when I was away I was gone for for nine days on a road trip with my family. And a couple of different times on the trip like I said to my wife I'd missed the cards it's not. Holding the memory thing it's just sort of analyzing at all and and going over thinking about what to do next to want to sell strategizing. That's a word. That's that's what I missed and if you do. Compile all these things and then and then move them and to a lesser amount of things then you might miss the the the -- If you will of that some people will laugh at that work for the point is gonna make about. About Mario Williams is top Carter -- and there there probably are short prints siege maybe or other companies but to exquisite is or I would go from our New Orleans. That the rule of thumb for me would be yeah that's going to be more expensive than you might like by whoever the player is go to. The top product. And if you want their rookie card you wanted to means something you thinking about appreciation. Certainly the quality of the car autographed Jersey patch in their in this case. Go to the top of the line search eBay and then. And then list. Items by the highest prices. And you'll see what those products is if your hockey collector you want the cup before you wants. -- -- or ultra or something like that that's what I always say and yet that means putting more money down and if that's a factor. Usually is. Then you know you just settle for you to the best you can do but I think. That's that's a rule of thumb for the higher quality the products. Translated the more expensive the product the the better off. You would you would tend to be in terms of -- future future growth. The weather. I I'm not. Mr. small talk I am probably the worst person in the world small talk you together with people you don't see very often this -- your kids are doing. Am like good. I just a terrible that it. If I were ever stranded on an elevator I mean I just don't know what I would do listening to people in the in a Sauna ago. I go I take my kid my my son excuse me. So I would never do that to my son to swim class at the end -- to go and dishonest we go in and people are always talking about the weather. -- -- -- Can't do it analysts say yeah it's warm. I should make an exception. Right now for the weather because it is all unbelievable not just year did you know. Chicago has been in the eighties three days in a row. The last three days in their headed there again today in Chicago. They have never in recorded history. Ever before had two days in a row in March. In the eighties. And they're three and likely they'd get to four Bismarck, North Dakota yesterday. 82 degrees. The average high for this state is forty more than double. Minneapolis 79. The warmest day in March there since 1910. The whole month. All kinds -- records all over the country according to the weather channel. 15100. Record high temperatures have fallen in the last week and it's not close to being done. The record today here is 68. And were likely to go past that they say tomorrow to. Today's record in buffalo is 68 according to this hopefully this is right from weather channel it was set in 1927. So it's not that warm out super fought if you don't know and at least in Emerson -- and it may be only around fifty but. Yikes I mean these are just crazy the temperatures all over from like. That the western border of the Dakotas. Nebraska and on down. All the way to the east it's colder in the west like -- Washington State Colorado Wyoming there there highs around forty either miss ago. Who -- global warming would be awesome stop. Amazing stop with you know what -- average temperature. Is supposed to be forty degrees right now it's almost fifty right now. Eight more and it's. Totally swallowed up by -- Gets the warmer than the average. Yes great love. Okay Christy Mathewson here's the the background look that you what I what I just read. Guy calls up says it's got a -- he's involved how to get it you bought it from a friend who knew he was a collector he said he paid 3000 dollars for. IE always tend to be conservative when. Giving people. Guesses as to the value of their things if I even want aghast because. There are so many variables that you just can't know about what you don't see. The item and even then you still have to have a a level of expertise that I I -- have -- certain. Things certain areas collecting but not in all cases. Sort of like -- we got a pretty good deal. At -- -- fast stood at Major League Baseball fan -- the all star game a few years back a single -- -- decent -- sold for 50000. 600 dollars. And on Huggins and Scott auction. I don't know the year if they do 2007. At a Hogan's and Scott auction a medicine ball sold for 161000. Dollars. Wow. If this is right when I'm reading your on online but the highest price ever paid for an autograph baseball. You should have offered -- 5000. And well. You may 2000 Larry. I don't feel bad about not doing that I mean I'm not -- Make deals exactly. But I'm open the guy. It's always information just like anybody else listening that. Is interested in selling something get all your information. And do the best you can no you can't assume if if you're that caller you can't assume. That those kind of dollars are available to you. It's time and place timing you know. There's good fortune. Exposure there are so few. -- items like this that it's just reckoned to be very consistent selling prices will be erratic. But you get lucky you're looking at big big dollars and of course that doesn't consider the condition of the ball is that it wasn't great. Would you want to I mean some fading -- just come to be expected but you want to the autograph to be as legible. As possible and in my opinion in this in this case spared no expense when it comes to. Authentication. You want PSA DNA on that ball you want -- on that ball to go for. For two. Whatever he said he had something in something good already. That's good but double up. So there's just no question. With authentication it's not that these places can guarantee you. But the -- legit what they do is it's -- of places as a guarantee because people in the hobby take it as though it is a guarantee. That those those balls are legit. That makes sense but they don't have picked these companies don't have pictures of the guy -- in the balls we can't know for sure but they they. Have that they're the standard. To be expensive PSE DNA on inaugural set. To Burkle above to see a picture of it. All go home asking myself would I give everything that I have in my collection for that ball.
