Hello welcome to the second episode WG -- baseball podcast Matthew collar here panel Carl also would meet pat. Opening day part. To going on this evening Howard you. I'm doing good met just as we tape this watching some -- Cardinals Marlins downed the new ballpark what used to be the Orange Bowl and not quite so it is. Yes now it's the Green fishbowl sculpture bowl all sorts of things cell. We'll talk about our impressions a little bit of that and Nick Carter the rather the marlins' opening ceremony will talk about that a little bit later but first -- wanna get into its -- -- it's time. Right I mean advises ready to goal. Ready to start their season. And I think it as far as luck of the draw goes. They did pretty well roster wise for exciting prospects and actually a decent looking roster what's your take. All that solely -- the bison have like a like they've had the past couple years and a nice mix of some young talent along with some veterans this year maybe more so. On the the past couple seasons but you bring back a couple guys got some Major League experience last year in just set -- Chris Swindon. -- on a positional player in -- and a -- inch when did which also adding. Your first round pick when he tenant -- Harvey errors than millions who was lights out in Binghamton last year. On and you got some pretty exciting prospects just one level below as well so. It seems like a very exciting timer on the ballpark yesterday had a chance to catch up with. A couple of the players just get their impressions it seems like every year -- every teen feels like they're gonna. Win the championship that whatever level win their division whatever whatnot but. Are there really seems like. I'm with the especially with you know not discounting new manager Wally back renewed the license that adds another element another level this equation too. On it seems like there's a little bit of a different feeling around the team this year as opposed to maybe last year that your four. Yeah I think the two million Harvey really add. And lecture kind of pop to it that I think was was there last year. Until some injuries and call ups as far as like who's our guys to watch. And then you know early in the year I feel like we were having the same conversation I don't wanna be redundant. In in going off on that point again but. I think that you're gonna see Harbin familiar here quite a long time and also. When those guys if those guys are moved up. You have to figure that Zack Wheeler who is another huge Mets prospect is going to be on his way to buffalo eventually he was assigned to Binghamton. As far as the Wally -- point. How much. The manager can really do for. You know whether the team comes out more enthusiastic. Or. You know whether they play tighter games steal more bases soul. In in such. I don't Carl how much you know a manager can do for how exciting game is but I am I feel like Beckman is the type of guy that. At very least you never know what's gonna happen when you -- the ballpark. Old that's absolutely right and -- I think there is a little bit. You know there is something to having a manager that. Can inspire you watch you you know. That you wanna you -- rally behind someone and I'm not saying -- toppling the managers. Previously weren't those that the guys -- every -- different but I get the feeling just. Having a chance to talk to a couple of players. Wally back in coming from the 86 Mets. I'm just his personality. The way he approaches. On the ball -- every -- the -- interacts with the players there's a there's a mutual respect there. I'll bet that the players and him and -- Beckman have and that does go a long way I think to. You know is managing style and giving guys a little bit extra leash at this level. Not to play their game play. I'm dude -- if the guy want wants to go fractures steal it if you've got guys that. Media are trying to. Tool that more of the field whether it be on the base pads -- in the field. -- I feel like -- back there might be that manager -- gives them that that little extra leash where. You know at all the levels other managers their job is to develop these guys do what. The organization says and that's it that's the bottom line. Or may be at a picture its next trip hitter to earn extra inning on as the season goes on and that's that's right think what back and comes -- play here. Really I think roared back from comes into play because people would love to see him go absolutely bizarre. And get thrown out against their mind let's be last year Ethel that's the McCain camp pointed at eagle on YouTube and type of -- it back in concede that you talked about that. When he was introduced but I just think you know from from a strictly clubhouse. And it at aspect here. Not that the mutual respect between the players in and Wally does go a long way and -- you're right I mean you know at some levels famous managers are guys that. Get right in the umpires face kicked at -- Danish cleats and pick up the base and throw it all in everyone's gonna remember Lloyd McClendon when he managed -- for the pirates. How many people are gonna remember Jim Tracy managed -- it's not not many. On the post eighties contrasting styles they're made went up -- best example the first one comes to my mind. He'll build up for the fans will be entertained. You don't like yeah -- I think so for sure because you never quite knowing and backed -- say add you know it's not going to be like that it'll be like that here and there now and then. Here on the field point. I mean you have your you have your old pros who are on this Ross there. And those guys it's gonna make actually no difference who's managing the team by the time their you know here in thirty years old say. Just generalize for a lot of the veteran players they've had manager after manager after manager after manager and they -- What he got him you got to manage yourself you gotta be a role the way you come -- do it every single day but. To have a guy who was successful the Major League level won a World Series who's on one of the greatest teams of all time. To be your manager if you're young players if you're one of the younger guys the prospect -- -- Matt Harvey for your example. And having a manager like that I I think does -- a little extra respect. You know when he talks you wanna listen because that guy was on one of the greatest teams of all time and all cell. You know don't ever underestimate back means charisma to. I mean I've I've had a chance to talk with a myself already. This year since he's arrived in town and he's he's a very charismatic guy it's a great talker he's gonna make things interesting I think for the fans players media I just think it's a great guy. To have -- team. All around it's it's a win win for all the fans the players I mean there's no doubt while. And -- let's see now you're about to hear how much your impressions so far of some of the veteran players I mean -- -- you're gonna be more familiar I'm gonna defer to you. Width with these types of questions because you're going to be around the team more often -- I am I'm gonna do my best but. You're gonna have a little more knowledge. For kind of the inside aspects -- about about some of the veterans they're gonna fill out this roster. Well I mean you used only to do is look to a delicate balance you know past Tucci who. Without despised team is he's now going into its third season with the -- in some. -- got another taste of NATO we'd like last year after only getting I'll once if that with the Expos I think back in 2004. Well I got -- pass Tucci who now goes back that may delete after seven years -- Bet that sort of re energize you as a player and I think that's one thing that I noticed yesterday I'm just from from saint Pat's Gucci. Are on the club houses that he is on. Not that this careers been extended by any stretch of the imagination he's gonna play another ten years but it just. Coming to the ballpark now on it see if there's a little new light. On you see come to the park in knowing that. You can. Com. You can be. Tom honored for our ordering your work doesn't go one noticed even it even if you're a six year veteran her or not top prospect in the system so. That's one of the players. You know does the veterans on this team were guys that work. Pretty much here last year ball -- -- for new and ice will be back just set it came up midway through the season this is. It's a prospect team. With a lot of all there prospects on if you if you can put it that way by the infield you'll -- -- -- -- at third base he can stay healthy this year. -- -- -- that will be nice and also on the pitching staff. You'll have until an owner who's been in the chain for awhile you'll also have. A veteran in Danny and Daniel -- -- -- been around Major League Baseball in the minors a lot so. While you won't see a lot of being six year veteran names per say you are gonna see a lot of guys that have been around awful in the past couple years. Yeah guys who were key kind of known a little bit by the fan base and you know some some old pros as we as as you could put that oil that's what that's kind of what triple -- is it's guys who. Have had their careers derailed. Now I know my friend I've mentioned YouTube for medics and -- He was with the big league club in spring training with the Baltimore Orioles. And he ended up getting assigned to triple play that's that's his story in the same story for a lot of players is. He's 2627. Now he was higher rated prospect. Career was derailed by wrist injuries he basically missed two full seasons and now he's trying to work his way back up and you lose that prospect status. Things are made more difficult for you but that doesn't mean you're still not good still not have the talent. It just means that it's harder. To get a chance with the big club so I guess you know being with the Mets I think if -- pitcher even like Chuck James Chuck James is that way he's a lefty. With the -- since he was -- Rochester last -- they get to know him a little bit. You know he's a guy who can certainly pitch in the major leagues and did a little bit last year with the twins. I think that you know that's a guy that will be nice probably to see him get a chance with the big club because he probably deserves it. And I think that's what you know all these guys are really working toward you know -- you wonder at times like well you know he's has twice 27. You know maybe they know they're not gonna make it or whatever but in -- team like the Mets sometimes there's always an opportunity. Yeah I mean you look at two more veterans that are a bowl will fill out the the offensive side of things -- -- Bobby scales who's been. And pro ball reverse a long time. He'll be on the -- Omar Quintanilla who spent time with Texas last year oh. When they went on the way to -- World Series solicit two more guys that and veteran types it's had some Major League experience in the past I'm maybe not. A wealth of Major League experience not talking five tenure Major League veterans but guys that have been there before just look at the bet that -- one last chance to get back to the big leagues. -- and are only you know -- one or two injuries or trade your -- away from from getting that chance. It's definitely excel they speak it out you know the roster and advises you had a chance to talk -- Matt Harvey he's. I've -- he's number one right he's the top prospect on the -- right. Top prospect opening day starter. You don't get the ball. When the team takes on Pawtucket Thursday. On. You know talk -- army on Wednesday met. I really. He felt late it sound like a veteran talk to me. I've -- into the media he didn't seem like a kid just two years I'm removed from being drafted and it it was really it was interest. Now I'll put that it was it was interesting in need to and a chance talked to god let's hear right now. The only ones don't believe there's -- just says something to keep on your mind when you're in between the line your -- as. Mauresmo yeah I mean it's it's something. You know me two days and they're performers start. All right you know I'm almost there. But once you get out there and try on the mound which is being able. It's. -- -- -- And I think that goes for anything that you do you you can't really predict the future for. Trying to do more than you can do it's we can do now when and how well you can knew at that point. And that's on the go about my thing. Okay. What do iron down there was on the tape review and what they can improve on that. And the biggest part was just watching him and learn from -- this thing. You know being response to what they had to say in the way they went about their ways. It is just learning always learning and different things asking -- I was the biggest part for me is. You know through bullpen or through BP your in the game and Congo's corporate accounts say. Knew what book I've worked on what did you see from here your aspect of the game and and you sit there watching Henry is watching. And sometimes it's better get. What they see rather than what you were what are so. You know being bigger campus that was the biggest thing talking to those guys. They're big -- big plus for me. -- Washington. Back here that was Matt Harvey -- you pat nice job on. So let's move on a little bit here from the -- and I mean we've mentioned it last week should be of very exciting season. For the license can't wait to see a lot of the guys that are very. Coming through AAA Bryce Harper the most notably and possibly even any -- it's going to be it's going to be great. I think but I always feel that way anytime baseball shows up I think I've mentioned that about eighteen times we started doing this. So you know. All of that yeah yeah you talk about some some of the guys that becomes the -- but you know watching opening day in Major League Baseball. Yes that -- seasonal been over in Japan a week ago just watching tonight. Wednesday night watching Miami in Saint Louis and oh by the way -- how weird is it how long to get it used to calling in the Miami -- -- or tomorrow. Well I was doing sports updates today and you know when I realized that. Five -- update. No it took I was doing updates for two hours off for two hours I was saying Florida Marlins. And then I've looked at and I went all in all. Hello let's look at the people call Tampa Bay gallery well you know what to know nobody's said anything either like. Not any of the other guys on the show no techsters no callers I think everyone still has gotten used to yet and so I got lucky for -- mistake but. Sorry go on to point. On line it's just it's different you know a change in atmosphere change in scenery down in in Miami this year. I'm Jeffrey glorious sunk a lot of money in his new ballpark. Aren't just interesting to it to see some of the commentaries that come in a while the spark and how it. It's bucking the trend of going retro Latin and that's maybe the biggest thing to me is how you know the play Saint Louis tonight we're cardinals moved into. -- Busch Stadium the third. And it was a scaled down -- back to the traditional on first what stadium as opposed to. Going big time. Blow up the seats as many -- you can get. That was the trend. From Camden yards twenty years ago smaller. More compact and -- -- tradition. Whereas you know look at Miami the sculpture books that neon Green paint I mean just everything about it -- it's Miami and this is 2012. Yeah 20/20. Eight it seems -- -- I got not even modern after the that sculpture. Did Jerry Garcia design it. I wanna know how to drugs -- people or heck yeah -- mean he's seen the video -- I've seen it on YouTube yes but it. The sprays the water five Marlins chilled bottle water and lights and all this junkets like. All right the apple would New York is cool because an apple goes up in lights up that it goes back down now we've got. Marlins jumping all through all rainbow in it to the back into the ocean which -- a lot of it's overkill but a lot of it you know speaks to how. You know we are getting away from the trend don't. Back to the roots in now you know what what's the what's the next -- it's gonna be built. How is why would Miami footprint can be taken towards that. I guess so I hate the team I hate the owner I hate the franchise. The I don't know I kind of hate the ballpark I hate the flamingos. I hate the stupid dolphins jumping up and down. I can't help it I I can't help it I'm listening to people. Like all day or at least on the broadcast. Talk about. While this is really unique in interest thing in wonderful and I just it's mean. Liking old school like old time baseball and great parks like Camden yards that are fairly new but still look like they -- been built in the twenties. And it's it's it's just it doesn't fit with me I didn't want Nationals Park. Because I felt like it was too cookie cutter is too like modern and all that didn't happen any sort or feel to it. I can't stand -- and not standing this was made way worse. By their introduction ceremony. Where they brought out. Mohammad Ali and Ali what horrible and it just felt so wrong. To see Mohammed Ali they're looking like that and so. Out of place like Mohammed Ali a boxer the greatest of all time. At the new Marlins park. Right. Guess that's what you and I were talking before before set down to record this podcast and you mentioned it means to -- did you see it I -- and you mentioned that one of his biggest fights of all time and it's -- like -- should know that was down in Miami but. It did happen in Marlins are it didn't happen in pro player Joseph Rabin dolphin Dolphin Stadium whatever you wanna call it. Mohammed Ali's global Kentucky that that's -- that's where it's from is that the museum and down there in global. What I think of my hot and I'll leave her herb Miami I don't think one of the other one with the other in. It's unfortunate I guess. It for from what you're telling me just just. In the condition that he's in now -- days in and to bring about. To the new knowledge parked it really doesn't really serve a purpose I don't think. By the way just apropos everything. The Marlins through the first five innings as we sit here and talk don't have hit. Well not gonna change Kyle -- -- wouldn't that be sultan and your first game in the new park. It's opening night the cardinals -- the defending champions are opening up in the new ballpark in Miami on the road in. Bet that really would be solved and by the way it. I will tell you quickly. About my fantasy team I signed Kyle Lohse. On my fantasy team which is surprising because I usually don't have a fantasy team I got talked into it by a body. Said it would mean that much work I have Kyle -- so. Go no hitter. -- of the flood and provide well through five innings it's my greatest fantasy decision ever seen that I haven't played fancies I was like thirteen. Well there under 61 their -- to -- a look at. That's also true. I am I don't have a history of ever being good fancy although I am really good at NASCAR fancy or not which I don't really watch NASCAR. I'll ask our -- anchor host AB -- Well I think David's agitated -- -- because every week I sent him on Twitter like -- you see how well I did this week. Because he knows everything about NASCAR and he's like the racing genius. Does a great show there on Sunday mornings. And I don't nothing about it and the reason I decided to get into his fantasy league is because I want it to beat him because I knew would bother. So all or I hoped it would bother much it's so. Anyway -- take before we run. As unlike last week we'll try and keep it under an hour. Is. You know Major League Baseball starts in Japan. Then starts at night on -- Wednesday. And then tomorrow the Marlins go play in Cincinnati. And have another opening day or something. I gotta say like I know hold it I'm just being an old baseball guy here instead of modern. You know. Dolphins loving sculpture guy. This how many opening days are there now. Well but the problem is -- means. To me it always comes back to how many days off to have in baseball I have to start on a Wednesday. So that they can get the playoffs in so I don't stay in the World Series game seven doesn't extend until November 23. I mean I'm I'm exaggerating to make a point here but every seven days. Major League teams have to have All -- negotiated another contract it they can't. Don't want it extended extended road trips you know do eighteen to come home eight days are off whatever on. It just that the day after you had your opening day there's a day off. Why you have the day off the argument being made well if you -- -- -- you have -- the next day and you know it gives people a chance to get back to the ballpark the next day. What does and if I took the day awful work. To go to opening day in Chicago to see the -- Against the nationals tomorrow I can't. Call into work the next day in and and not go to work because it got rained out on Thursday and guess what I'm -- and a lot the second -- -- work in in on Monday when I command. And -- sixty hour with the work instead of forty this week amidst that's not the way it goes a mean. Baseball just takes too many days off there's too much time in between. You know. Between opening day in game number two in most cases and it's gotten way out of control and I guess no way to negotiate -- in the collective bargaining agreement to be hard to get. Odd days off negotiated away from the players because it's the right Paper but it just it doesn't feel right. And of course who can comprehend why they played. In Japan -- we all waited for five days and then we had other opening day who quite didn't. In the eighty's at least have more spring training game -- -- -- today they played the giants and a final spring training game. I -- hole they played in Japan and regular season another plane spring training again no wonder why no one knew the games we're gonna happen went through it was poor planning and and all the back to just all right let's let's trot that this split squads out for another week it's just it just doesn't make. It's it was a little odd it doesn't feel the same in you know of course if you asked me I would say at 1 o'clock on opening day. That the Cincinnati -- should play. But you know that's just I. I'm really not like the super traditionalist. Guy you know I mean I'm not big on blogs and intentional walks and all those types of such but well. You know. I -- like I like modern ideas. But. You know starting the season a bunch of different times I'm not you John normally you -- Florida Marlins so. With that though. You got to fancy name. I don't -- I have a tough enough time managing a fantasy football team. One day a week on Sundays I could not do even though I know you could sit down Monday it manager whole -- roster. I just I'm not I'm not -- it all -- Now you're right commitment is a big thing I think the people who win fantasy baseball are the guys who stay committed to it -- all season. And unfortunately my friend who I'm in his league is so that guy he is the is the -- he's. Have the same week since like 2006 I think he's won it like three or three or four times so he's he's that guy he will not relent. When it comes to making sure he's got the right starting pitchers and whoever else in the games so. We'll see how it goes without Kyle Lohse is no hitter. You know would have been more fun to do this podcast is if you -- gotten a no hitter. You know and then we can play it if it happen well that's just work so Kyle -- no hitter great job. Just get an added -- didn't actually -- Exactly. We will -- we will do this at some point next week you're going to Chicago see you have a good time there and you enjoy Wrigley. And also follow you on Twitter pat WGR mean Matthew WGR. Look for the -- Start or what while one last thing before we we sign off here the -- to at their home opener next weekend I don't. Little -- had a chance to talk up podcasting for that so it is the have a chance -- check out the license on April 11. Other home opener he can't catch it my sister station Katie 1521 at the game because. Now the fun folks show the -- log will be on the air I during the game itself on the team if you had a chance to switch back and forth between the two. Check out the Biden's. Opening day is well very cruel. And depending on what the sabres do I may be covering opening day for us on the web so we'll see other goats. -- -- all right thank you very much pat I'll talk you later and thank you very much for listening to WG yards baseball podcast.
