-- Are we young. There we go that's -- This works okay. Sorry about that everybody. By usual microphone. Doesn't work way to go but that been -- few days and was expecting that. Welcome to the hobby here on WGR every Saturday morning for eight -- nine wanna talk about the draft a little bit because that's the law. Also wanna talk about some of the memorabilia I saw out of the field house the last couple days. The bills that the bills alumni probably is a better way to describe it had a Booth set up. And done whatever you wanna talk about it's always fun for me to get calls and -- it's been a lot different subjects. Wasn't prepared to talk about. Satchel Paige last week -- different guys whose names come up when callers. Mention autographs or pieces that they have for -- usually it's what they have and wanna sell I've got a friend who is. A big collector and a big spender. And I say that as a compliment he's my idol. And he was texted me this morning texting me to tell me about. Just how much insane. How many in -- offerings there are at some of the recent auctions that are up if you are. Into the hobby and happened to be a player like my friend Brian. Com men want and what. Period of time -- because you've just got as I've talked about a little bit but it's just seems more and more true. Robert Edward. And was well known within the hobby as a collector. Very high grade. Hall of Famer rookie cards -- big time stuff. One thing I remember about talking with them very easy going sounding guy. You know soft spoken kind of and it was written about young that his favorite card one is the Pete Rose rookie. 1963. Tops a huge garden rose is not -- -- Forum well known reasons but. It's a it's a big carted collecting 63 rows. And I asked him about that and said I don't know where they got that. He actually says actually his favorite card or favor -- the one that. Got him into it. They had it just connected with my guess is Harold Baines rookie card there be 1981. So a little bit different. But Dmitri Young has -- famously. Incredible collection of high grade -- -- Rookie cards from the all time greats and it's for sale. And a couple listeners have emailed me about it there's a big article in the latest PSA and PSA magazine a sports market report about you on. And my friend has told me that young plans he read young plans to just liquidate and and start over. Which show him is a fun idea if you build the kind of collection. You can sell pretty easily there would have. Great appeals at an auction site or on eBay however you would do it. Then down. That's of a fun way to go. I think otherwise it's hard and I've talked about this from my standpoint right that is while I have a good collection. Gates. It's acts that are -- a lot of it is is comprised of items that are pretty. And when you put it altogether becomes good. I guess as a describing this pretty good is be low good but anyway. The idea here is to say that on some of these pretty goods at these decent to 300 dollars sets. Are difficult to sell. When they go to an auction site if they were to go to auctions say they would not stand out they would be dwarfed. By the monster items and Robert Edward. Right now somebody's cards that give you an example that you know a little bit about collecting this major study makes cents. The -- Wagner card the most famous card. In the history of cards is the second. Rarest -- the second office card. At least. At this. At this auction there's there's another card from a hundred years ago it was an error is getting going all. And it was only recently discovered a few years ago that a particular error was made on this car -- the print run stopper just changed and like there are five or six of them makes -- Wagner so anyway I mean that kind of stuff was out there and by what 1975. Tops basketball. Or some collection of seventy sets I wouldn't think that would stand on its own. Onto an auction site and consigned to a to a place it would it would stand out. And likewise dealers and you know this may apply to you you've got sets like that and are one of the people that occasionally. Communicate with me -- or -- do sell this stuff. Economic thing while it has its value and it's in the price guide and it's not certainly not worthless. It Tom doesn't appeal to a dealer so much a dealer has a tougher time flipping that. It's not really in high demand there's plenty of it around if you wanted 75 basketball it's just okay. That's just one example -- set. Seventies certainly eighties. This is true of almost everything 86 basketball would be an exception comes right to market. So I am in the neck and have -- easy time liquidating if you can do what Dmitri Young can -- which very few musket man and collecting. To be a lot of managers cash out for watt in his case a couple of million dollars maybe. And then start over. It is like me as the half rule. Don't forget that properly read about the half rule in the trades. But you wanna respect they have rule witches anytime. I'm I'm generally want to subscribe to this. As as much as I -- any time. Money comes in selling something you you collect it'd. You know maybe it's a bonus at work maybe it's a lottery ticket maybe it's Christmas present. Money comes and we all have our debts today. Half of it goes to something fun. Whether that's in collecting that's another card or or. You know shrimp or something like that that's my that's my rule and that's good way but where to go about. Getting money like that it's not it's not your salaries that -- expecting. I I subscribe to that rule. 8030550. Is the number Andrew -- the top pick of the draft is being sued. Now I thought about not mentioning this and there's certainly a lot of hobby news that I don't mentions like I could have ignored. And the thinking in that case was that. It reminds me of a lot of this really horrible emails that I get her stuff on the all the time but try to make you feel bad for me but. Some some people just law to give you a hard time. And all of us in the media have our battles with that you know some people are really go to does not carry about it. Some people love to tell you about it because I guess they think that. Serves their purpose they want to embarrass the percent. My approach is just to ignore it totally the last thing to do is give the person and he any notoriety. I think that way about the slowness in palm leaf. Now Ryan leaf and -- talking NFL draft leave trading cards has just been. I mean almost obsolete. They just don't have the the stature in the hobby so. A few days before the draft. -- announced that it was suing -- -- why. Four years ago. Leaf put a card out and picked at a picture of locked. Playing at a high school all star game all America all star game. And against. I don't know how recent ones should know but I don't. -- people contacted leaf and said they must discontinue. The production of this car that they didn't have the right to make it. And -- apparently thinks otherwise it's coached a few days before the draft they send out of a release saying they are suing. Andrew -- now it seems to me. Not being an attorney it seems to me that what you do when you get a cease and desist letter is not sue. But it is either cease and desist or not you either. Continue to produce the -- and perhaps face a lawsuit. You basically. You basically dare. The the other party to go forward and so you and make you stop. Or you you do you capitulate you do what they want you do. Instead your -- I think -- eight probably cheap attempt to get some up publicity which I. Grudgingly giving them very at a very small level. They go ahead and file a lawsuit it's unclear whether they want anything from Andrew -- they may just want you to know that there around. And this card now about this. Most of us you know at this. The station sports scandals of -- station you know Andrew Luck is you know enough probably just common sense about collecting the -- well and looks really good and young. Rookie cards or are coming out his card should be valuable this part of them that -- made from him playing at a high school all star game. All every today and there are a couple of them one I saw the maybe it was sorted by best match from its servers the -- won and the first one on my screen. Sells an eighteen hours and sellers asking two dollars and 75 cents and can't get it. So it's not like anybody is. Going after this bidding on this card. And it's Andrew Luck in high school. Uniform. So let's tell you something to I think it's amusing and -- also transparent and that's my them. Part of my motivation for for mentioning it. One thing I would love to get. Some feedback on today. Especially from people who have bought such items. Is something that I that I saw at the field house the last couple days and had a nice conversation. Late yesterday with -- height of the bills about it. Tried it on. Word to. Beck you know sort of speak in the bill's family you know were were still going about our business. Being honest and criticize them when need be and -- to the to the extent that it matters to me. That's that's not gonna change but there are things I'll happily admit this to you and I would have all along with the sabres haven't been our flagship station for -- sabres. There are there are certain things you just don't media should make about me I won't mention. Because I feel like that there is just it's a little bit too. Personal may -- I can get in a move with the bills and being that I would never be out there. And have interaction with people that I would just. I would run into saying something that I would later -- probably shouldn't set like that kind of thing in outlook at that by the way. As a bad thing that that should change now I look at that is good. Because a lot of that stuff doesn't need to be set and it sounds -- And it doesn't really help. Us early help me. But anyway. Amateur that was. Like I said that to this example. On it might crossed my mind the last couple days slick sort of growing -- the row is this something I would mention. I thought it was at first glance. I thought it was strange that in the field house yesterday the bills have this. This draft party that on the last two nights for sweet older in the last -- season ticket holder -- one of the first things. You would have seen at you when you enter is on the laughed. This big alumni. Set up. This is big table -- autograph footballs and jerseys on it programs I found out they are selling programs to. And they had a very nice display. Which which also had a very nice idea I thought I would love to have this is a topic some time to it's it's a perfect. Talk radio kind of thing they ranked the top 109 draft picks in bills history this might have been an official. Undertaking along the way or not they had big pictures and and a logo for it to -- guy. Number one Jim Kelly 1983. -- number of fifteen every was. Like that and headed to lead out one through ten big you know like those fat head things is big. Signs of each guy at the right. On the table I thought it was strange that there were autographed balls the likes of Marshawn Lynch. And Trent Edwards and JP loss man Paul Posluszny. And guys who weren't on the team anymore. And it's not like guys like Kelly and -- in -- out of the team anymore you know these players some of just dumped. And I thought well why would the bills want to assume you're walking and especially. Show you that. I thought with the Dallas Cowboys with a New England Patriots teams I consider. The top teams marketing. And just overall would they do that if guys. Got like -- Bledsoe left Dallas to they have Drew Bledsoe. Signed jerseys in the Dallas Cowboys store. On -- that would do that it seemed to me that they probably wouldn't. -- or the bills. What was the message. Being sent. By having lost and an Edwards autographs. Where you walked in the door anyway I questioned it. And is that it just railing into it on the chair Michael and where you are now let's talk the talk to somebody would do the right way. So I am one of the -- from Matt. Is that the bills give they get these things signed all the time of course actually. And they give the players gone sometimes at least they will give the things to the -- Mean they are -- Losman and Edwards their bills on the -- so that the items are given -- the alumni. People who then sell it. Pretty cheap I think. And raise money and I was told yesterday. That on Thursday night. The bills did very well selling pieces like that. One friend of mine who's a collector that I saw yesterday said he was buying. Programs. One is oldest from 1979. For two dollars. At the fieldhouse last night I mean you'd think. At this -- store at the bill story there's a big mark up in the that's not that that's not eBay you know as a collector. EBay or online -- those pretty much the best ways to buy something. In this case you know of the cheap prices are coming there so -- -- of great. But I just wondered. You know who buys it who buys the Marshawn Lynch autograph ball who buys the -- Jersey. At this point. I guess you know it could work for somebody who wants a Jersey and that doesn't have one I mean you can Wear. Not buying you're probably not buying it deported Efrain you know you're not buying top of the line when your buying. It in order where the style Jersey anymore that dark blue. Jersey that. Was on display with Losman signature. You know concerned about what it's worth during the like that he just you know a fan -- -- wanting to Wear a Jersey like other fans that reports of people there last night. Wearing jerseys I can't think it would really appeal to a collector at all it's just odd for me second. It's not like a foreign concept either but just thinking of somebody buying autographed Jersey. A guy who's doubling -- on the team but just was. It's harsh I guess thought he's thought of it is a failure. So I'm what do you do with that and is it is it a matter of like how much is it may be. That that Jersey and I don't know why should I don't I just didn't find out what that Jersey sold for last night or how much they were asking for a J. P. -- signed Jersey. Is it less than it would be on signed at a sporting goods store that might still have some entered. It seems to me there would be sporting goods stores that would still have those for sale. I just thought it was very strange that the bills would basically. Show their themselves that way but I guess it was the one nice thing it was working for them they were selling stuff. So calm in that respect. I can certainly respect. Again I'd love to hear from somebody who was there maybe would buy one bills or sabres or any team when a guy goes what do you do. With the Jersey you've given away eighty aware do you try to sell like what do you do that autographed Jersey of the guy who leaves us and as we know. Guys -- leave us all the time. 8030550. Is the number I'd love a comet or two unmet. Or anything else related to collecting -- show and this is the hobby heard every Saturday morning here on WGR. Who welcome back to the hobby heard every Saturday morning 8 -- 9 eastern time WGR Sports Radio 550. -- lines are open again. Specifically at love to talk to a couple of people who. Have some kind of experience or opinion on. Buying. Autograph pieces of players who have left. You know J. P. Losman Trent Edwards Marshawn Lynch these guys the bills actually at their alumni -- in the fieldhouse were shelling. Autographs of these men last night and I couldn't believe it but that night I did hear yesterday that assuming that the prices are right that they sold quite a lot of it. So to me that was kind of odd but I don't know what teens are supposed to do with the bills told me through a spokesperson was. That they gave. A lot of this stuff to the alumni which. You know it makes sense can help the alumni make money for its efforts. And that is really -- that was happening so -- am you know your opinions on that I would I would appreciate that I'd love to know. Where you think about it I've I talked about it with a few people over the last couple days and do you think it's weird and sums it yes and sums -- now. Also I've brought this up yet but. As I look at the show as almost baseball show you know it's collecting it's all kinds of different stuff it's also local. But Tom. Baseball cards. Actually was Dmitri Young who made this point to me speaking of him earlier. On the show a couple of years ago is that when you think about card to think about baseball and -- life. And with that in mind rice harper who is a major star in collecting. He makes his Major League debut tonight or today that your today gamer and I can't it's against the Dodgers. In LA and Stephen Strasburg is pitching. So harper was nineteen and had been playing for Syracuse or for what two or three weeks. In the International League. Is going to the major leagues that is because Ryan Zimmerman. -- -- and we'll see if receive harper again but he would he did not end up making a trip here to buffalo. Next week maybe. You know that yes next week they would have been here for all four games he wasn't -- just last week. He was in Rochester Rochester is played in Syracuse once or twice too so they've seen them play. But that team. They're their media guys have seen him play is what it's I'm not by the 9 o'clock for about 9 o'clock tonight Washington and LA Strasburg for the nationals and harper in the lineup. Four Washington. And for point of reference on eBay march 13 so what. Or April 13. No march 13 trees more than a half ago but it was more recent first. 2011. Bryce Harper red reef -- number three out of five -- nine by Beckett with an autograph. -- chrome sold for. 4584. Dollars and 34 cents that's right 34 cents. That's the the load number work numbered to five somebody's going after. Maybe every Bryce Harper card and wanna take a shot at that when you've got five grand throw around are almost. There ago. The ones numbered at fifty. Have sold for. Money approaching 2000 dollars so that's big time Bryce Harper is back to pirate now in collecting and he has yet to. Take a pitch in the major leagues but he will tonight. Again the number 8030515. Here is Steve on WGR hi Steve. Morning aria. Different than it was funny when I heard you talking about this because yeah I -- on the last night and I was there was much time and and we looked at it and I said you know lines might be a cool little -- where. But Mikey says it's kinda you know we're talking JP lot nor doctor -- -- -- -- that we go to a gift store. And that by the way they were fifteen dollars or -- -- for the -- yet for a ball. This is for what those mini helmets. Which I thought was not a bad deal you know it true that that's okay. That we -- -- shop and they were thirty dollars. You know what giving it Trent Edwards mini helmet from my tenure though that for fifteen backs. It's a great conversation piece you know people are gonna last patch yet. But you know that's located -- got that -- -- five years ago it wouldn't really -- But -- and we locked away no helmet. No autograph. But you know what if I was there again I would probably I probably would pick it up -- And to make sure I'm I'm right the helmet in the story you mentioned it was thirty dollars on site. That was on inside unsigned -- so you don't you got an autographed. Not addressed on the pursuit came back half. The price on the on the guys who. Who you know love them or not there's there's the story behind -- that's where proceed. Whoever seated at that school that you can either make something up or you can just say you know electric -- -- for it impacts but you know to have that on autograph collector for double the price. -- -- Or there but the souvenir but you know artists and it's a great signature. That and it's you know trying to accident at a critical and you can read it and -- -- number but you can read this right. So you but I'm glad to know the prices are good -- -- yet acknowledged that it was a fun event could could get as excited about the season and -- -- no autograph telecheck. Yes okay good. The the thing I kept coming back to thinking about it was like a farmer -- this what I have these things. For sale. And where it you know again the way it played out. It wasn't. As it was described -- wasn't the bill's. Decision you know was the alumni decision and it was functional programs so OK you know what what you do let's. That's fine I can appreciate the alumni want to raise money and having these things in. Probably pretty good supply wanting to move them so I -- and certainly it's not they're not asking for too much. That's what I heard too from a couple people out the numbers is that the prices were very low on that stuff it's kind of sad isn't it. Maybe not specific. To the bills or even the sabres anything local but. When you have something. That felt it as value that decreases. Because it's signed. Mean not right away but that's were around. This held this thirty dollars of us that signed by Trent Edwards and it's fifteen. It's kind of sad isn't it. And I bet some of you have. I -- think if something goes on talking to myself a lot today I think something that I have that would be worth more. If fit weren't signed without incriminating anyone that I don't want to incriminate urges embarrassing someone like who would that we have -- Well. This isn't a great example but it's just -- to sort of get me started. Thinking out loud here I bought a Jersey. From a product called just. Minors I think maybe it's called but there was a product a few years ago maybe it's still exist not buying new so I don't know if it does. David Adams sold them in in in a box it was just a Jersey in a box and you didn't know rule us there's a list to guys sick it could've -- And my guy was Conor Jackson. Of the Diamondbacks. Who played for Oakland and then he played for Boston I think -- -- -- -- you your worst Conor Jackson it was a big prospects. Just didn't hit. Think he might go on back to Oakland or maybe is an Arizona now Arizona I think that's restarted. Maybe in Oakland OK I don't know but. That's the guy got you know the Diamondbacks Jersey autographed by Conor Jackson who when the product was new was kind of a big deal. And you know it just wasn't really worth anything the guys didn't make it or wasn't a great player. So -- I'm actually what I did but it was. We had. While we were Grand Slam -- gets -- Grand Slam -- that was crowd. Muted Chicago White Sox Tripoli to -- notes that the Charlotte. So he's in Charlotte. We had a Grand Slam pull myself bull dog Greg may be Matthew was and it we'll pick teams and once all your teams that you drafted. Hit grand slams from that day. You want. It came down to Greg having I think it was Oakland that he had only Oakland Boston he had only that one team left. And Conor Jackson hit a Grand Slam form to win it to win the pool. And I just like I'm giving Greg boosters because I I like to have to buy and sell like to be in the game with collecting but -- -- sell this. I'm gonna move this and that's the dilemma that the bills that maybe how -- -- this autograph. Conor Jackson Jersey who's buying it -- given to Greg I get to see them where sadly. But he had -- where real we should take pictures and week out of legacy Greg. I think I have a by the way. My uncle gave me a PGA Forbes signed Rochester red wings -- he was the second baseman for them when they won the governor's cup and those. Have to go for quite a lot in the old store their but I can't imagine anyone give me a dollar for PGA form. Right for him at a dinner and yes yeah he deserved just career minor leaguer second baseman when they won the governor's cup. Just I mean really not anybody who would have any value in you know the hobby at all. But the hats are are nice and they sell for like 25 bucks. It all an autograph can almost suffice as graffiti. It's and yet you want the idea being the autograph goes on there that while this is more valuable but sometimes it's like why -- -- right on your hat. Well look I mean it sort of -- -- probably Celek and just realizing all of this and it's. It is something I've thought of but. Sure most. Is that most. Most autographed. Things. Wouldn't be. Babe Ruth photographs and they wouldn't be things that would make money for you. And I know that that's how it's not a lot of people think a lot of people. Collect most people who get an autograph that. So concerned with. Whether or not it will increase the value of it Gurney thing like that is just. Something to do it's it's a moment hey that's Drew Stafford let me see if he'll sign this -- -- Something like that. And I just. It I'm I -- some more focused on the other the other side of it but there. I wonder just what I am thinking it's most Libya's -- there are certainly millions of autograph pieces that are just you know. Duds because this as far as the hobby goes because. Right there's there's not much going on there -- a price to as a ball. From the ALC yes the year the tigers beat Oakland to me that's 2006. And then the tigers lost the cardinals. As the ball from that series like it's I don't it was used in the game but it it's may be it was. And it's signed by Placido Polanco. Which you know that's gonna write down the middle right -- that's almost like not having an autograph it's not doesn't -- the ball. Might be -- but that MVP or something of that series that he was good these are right. But that Verlander. It's. A big big famous player so it's gonna like that. It's -- to think maybe of the guys who are just like the equivalent of not signing. And I think that was a sweet twos or it's not like some special series either. -- not a memorable series -- and Detroit to win the World Series so it's not special in that in that way either. But that that's what I think a point or the guys that. When they sign it's that it's that the monetary equivalent of actually not happening. The edwards' helmet is half off because it's autographed. The Jim Kelly helmet is worth triple because it's autograph but the told and getting to -- the the Chris Kelsey. Helmet cost the same as it would. Without the signature. Right I -- like crystals that I think that's a good guy I think that's a good one maybe he's he's like the equivalent of not signing mile of -- on the helmet. -- the same with the without. I think Antowain Smith might be there that might ruin it a little bit that there might be somebody there is a little bit of interest and and it's probably rightly won a Super Bowl and accolade is Quincy disgraced is some of these quarterbacks but just sort of you know -- He's. All right this is fun. 8030550. The number I'm Mike show more of the hobby next on WGR. Welcome back to the hobby I might show here until nine it's almost ten of best of WGR nine inside high school sports at ten then sell the podshow eleven more drafting. Today. The bills traded may seventh round pick away to move up ahead. Of a team that drafted a punter. That happened if you were to better early. And -- -- what is worse. Doing that or drafting a punter. Strange strange happenings there in the third round the bills moving up two spots ahead of the team Jacksonville. That used its pick for -- you'd think. That you have some special reason to give a -- away. To do that then you know I doubt the bills -- that ponder. You guys figure that one out last night today. You're here and I wasn't there either so -- X on the Matt is on WGR hello Matt. I don't like the U. -- Yeah I couldn't be there in the draft I think Catholic -- out of course New England get all the feel -- -- -- so they'll surprise. -- wanted to ask you. Two questions from what -- -- crazy -- I'm not all of I don't know as good -- name or maker of the color. On the becoming kinda like. Page form on the ball they. That statement that they -- -- up early. In the much of anything I'm wondering if there would be any you to they are older that you may surprise -- that he stressful on it off. I have I have no I had no idea I'm not sure I'll years. Who often when people say older they mean like the ninety's. Is that what you is that what you mean yeah yeah. I don't know maybe eight. America. You could you could write me if you wanted I could try to find out but I I -- office I always recommend eBay for that try to find. What you have on eBay you can see there what people pay for it. That about -- we don't -- it yes yes. -- -- -- and of course I want it if you would mind. You'd -- it god planned lamb blue how many games you get picked up at the public can do with my body. Okay well there were 45 assembly divvied up all the teams. And then -- every game yet. And argumentative. And Putin oh yeah. Well I shouldn't say like obviously I'm not sure they all did that season but. The chances were pretty good. -- isolate just the team that you pick one. They all had a grand plan -- doesn't hurt basically takes. Yes. Yes that that's -- we did you mean you can do that with grand slams you can do with. Winning by ten runs into -- with losing by ten runs. You know whichever team has a guy at the root for the cycle first the Mets had a guy -- for the cycle last night Hairston they lost by nine runs.
