You know welcome to WG cards baseball podcasts that he collar along with capital Carl. Patrick how are you don't. Well. Not too bad not too bad at all so pat we got to start out we're gonna get to Andy Pettitte who I had a chance to see pitched the other day in front of more than thirteen thousand frontier field in Rochester and also got to get to -- little more talk on on the buffalo license. Who are off to a great start I think actually it's probably exceeded my expectations but first we have to talk about. Jordy -- the speed. Who no one knows it's pronounced -- the steam instead of spin I'm right on that right. Yes Jordanian belt this daily -- -- Not that it's been hailed the -- anyway it's. Just flip the I to me exactly. He should have done. What is -- last night Phillies and Mets great game Roy Halladay started the game it was suited to in the ninth. Jonathan Papelbon when the greatest closers in the history of the game. Fastball inside part Elvis -- first MLB hit takes it out game winning home run. And after the game. It was outstanding EU they doused them in beer and he said. He had told his mom before the game that he was gonna get hit tonight even though he wasn't in the starting lineup so he came through big and that was. Really fun to see pat. You better chance to see -- email as being a little bit this year. Just just a great story last night. Well actually I mean you talk about a guy who. Stew was gonna start the season he's played last year when he got called from Binghamton the million feel for the Verizon's. Think for you and nice it's called the the major leagues in the first day of the licensees and after tourist goes down with that calf injury. And all of a sudden -- the speed as the starting center fielder for the -- position. I don't know account rubber feet even played it before this year at least a regular basis Hampshire he hadn't. And all of a sudden. Jordin about this -- is able to. I'll play the position well where you sometimes you don't know what you're gonna get out of a guy throwing him into that center field position. He's got the speed he's got the tools. You put it in a place here in buffalo and now getting a chance at the major leagues and was sent back down. -- what two days ago and then with another injury the nets are due -- the Mets heading another injury Elvis being called right back up. But right into the pinch hitter last night. And believe he was in the starting line up or is going to be the starting lineup there's at time we set this podcast ready and Philadelphia. But Elvis he was gonna start at shortstop so that's a guy that. You know really can can move the infield outfield. It's a good thing for the buys a good thing for the back to me. Maggie you look at the -- roster. How many guys were here in buffalo. Last year this year a year and a half ago I mean that the roster is loaded with former Biden's. And this team is just continuing to. Play right above par and that and -- which I think. Is under performing with you look at the teams around them. That's as long a contract water to the first. You know 23 months can find themselves looking at what those new wildcard positions. Well. I don't know if I go that far but I'm not saying they're going to I'm saying if if if they can keep. Just treading water I think they might they'll put themselves in a position with Santana now starting get some run support. Armed you know they're -- guys playing quote unquote out of character you know settled that one of the cliches of sports but I think if they can just. Tread water through the through the middle wants towards the all star break they they might be able to make Iran waits. I'm not I'm not put too much open it but you know like SAV for small unveil this team. It's kind of it's cool to see a guy who is so you know person tile and can kinda hang around have a career triple -- and then he finally gets shot. I don't I don't see him as being any sort of full time major leaguer but I've always been one to enjoy a good a good utility player of Enrique Wilson of sorts. Moret you know Joseph mcewing that kind of guy may be. He could maybe could turn out to have some sort roll like that. In the major leagues is it's just fun to see him you know get his first hit against. Jonathan Papelbon and what's even more amazing. Is that it's never happened before now now how specific is this but I read this -- it's never happened before that. It's a guy got his first home run. On his first hit against the clothes -- would more than 206. I know that's extremely specific. Well it's amazing how often first Evers. Happen in baseball every it seems like it's every single day or hitters all for eighteen against apple on going into last night before it appeared the ball in the he had been incredible. I mean he had been. Like really on so far this season which is not typical closers. You're really on for a long stretch and then you have one big meltdown -- RES three and happen to guess that's why Mariano Rivera is so incredible Billy Wagner to Wagner doesn't get a credit he doesn't have the policies are rare but that that's another point. So -- this being is up and I saw Johnson Rob Johnson got called today not that Rob Johnson the other one. The catcher for the license and let's see the list is too long for me to go through but the by -- Are saying and strong despite losing all their best players up to the Mets. Yeah I mean. And the guy -- -- -- Tino was called up over the weekend yeah right before the weekend another guy that he was one of the reasons routine help. Every day left -- for the license. And you know Bobby scales it seemed like every game those guys were getting updates Verizon's. Didn't have a young team coming in this year in terms of in Tripoli rookies have a lot of guys which Tripoli experience maybe not. Did that the level of a -- -- scales are all -- antennae -- but and and you look at some of the guys on the roster -- these are guys with. Two years this would be the second Europe Tripoli experience and you mixing guys like scales and they'll tell -- he has hit the ball much lately that's been the biggest surprise I think to me is that the Biden's -- -- -- a -- without power threat. -- -- -- it's been the wall guys in the did Bobby scales is trying to expected in May two weeks both guys have really. Carry the weight -- the license and you know Rob Johnson. He was hit the cup dropped the ball he injured his knee not on the road trip in Syracuse and Lehigh Valley comes off the disabled list. First game back is going from second to hold -- -- home plate testing out the need armed. And it had been playing out of his mind. For the for the hurt photo of the last seriously the last 56 games you'll look at. It's pre injury numbers were not very good at the plate is post injury numbers were very good at the plate so it all. In an all averages out in the long run but that's another guy that. It helps contribute to this team and now a guy like Lucas -- it's his opportunity. That to show that he can call a game like. On the level that Rob Johnson who has considerable Major League experience already. Ought to try to fill that role. Now tell me am -- wrong here are the fisons still first in the division right now. They are second there -- a full game behind -- Our topic going into the night tonight and you know the guy that one of the guys on the pitching staff that has led the way the buy things. Getting the call tonight it was Matt -- getting the start. -- we want to this podcast against. -- which has. May be the best pitching staff in the international in the tank Tehran's Vernon Jordan's. Right yeah I talk about carriage urgency -- -- -- very good Major -- success is Gary was around seven this year and after a couple starts goals of the miners. A delight to be out -- georgians and says -- every out to a five starts and it's not so -- a matter. RB I mean he's he came in as advertised as being a front end starter -- was his ceiling and you know he's. And our great start great starts of the season you really could asked trading -- -- raised in the in the low to lose he's been overpowering at times. 1010 strikeouts in one game with a nine. Ten strikeouts against Syracuse and he came back with five or six against. Lehigh Valley he was only -- starter to to go twice the next six game road trip. I mean hit a couple rough starts to start the with the -- and solved by his standards but you're right I mean this guy he goes out there. I told you before the season started. Talking to Matt Harvey in the pre season press conference. Keats talked and sounded like a veteran made it maybe that's him going to a big time college programming UNC. Being a little bit older having state that the fourth time UNC and gathered some of that knowledge but. You could fool me that he was a five or six shook Tripoli veteran just by the way. He carried himself. First time I've met -- and that was one thing that struck me and part of that is he doesn't let. Bad outings really. Bring him down huge they happen. Between the lines when he when he's done what he ices his arm again tonight that's it it's on to the next start he's not worried about. It you know that the start cost me a chance of going up the next injury or if he goes up close and strikeouts is that going to be enough to get me. The major leagues the next time we don't Miguel Batista doesn't perform at a rotation. It doesn't worry about that stuff in -- goes out and pitches and that's that may be the biggest thing we worry about that stuff so how much longer. I to me from everything I hear from Terry Collins. It'd be if not a September call -- very late August call I don't think other Mexican it. Try and brush him up to the major leagues and will end and have a situation where he doesn't start rotation next year. It comes back AAA or that -- next year getting -- I've Major League hitters and all of a sudden you. -- one -- your best pitching prospects I think teams especially the Mets are wearied. Doing something like that when it's a season where let's see what things go win -- if if this season really is not working out of the bottom Indiana least maybe it's an audition for artery for next year but I don't see them rushing him to -- at times. I guess if he continued to perform like this I wouldn't mind seeing him go up. Late June early July to avoid DS service time it seems like you know that's what happened -- Strasburg I guess I wouldn't be that shocked to see that the Mets if he continues to pitch like this. I'm gonna have to see him in person. I had a chance. To go to the -- scheme about a week ago and watch them play the -- -- red wings and I saw Joseph Benson and it was I was actually somewhat impressed by him and he gets -- -- -- a double play by the by the Red Wings but the only picture I saw. Throw for the licenses Dylan Owen so I'm hoping to be able to see a -- RB game it may be. Sit sit down in the stands and be able to watch the movement watchers approach. Up close I'd really like to do that soon so. Not maybe next homes that don't all have to do that but yes so far off to a very impressive start I guess if I if Florida handicap it continue if he continues to pitch this well. That's what I think I think they'll try to avoid the service time. Are kicking in and probably shoot from late June early July but if he struggles then obviously you're rated it would be a September call balls so. Anyway let's not let's say a quick break. Armed and then we'll come back and I'll tell you a little bit about. My experience a lot going to see you and you had its own yard back in on the cheers peaceful ones. Welcome back to the WGR baseball podcast along with -- Colorado at ala Karl. And that you had the opportunity this past Sunday to see. Well one of the best postseason pitchers. Of our lifetimes. In a Tripoli uniform and edit edit making. Which probably going to be his last mightily start before going back to the Yankees at this. -- latest trip with the bombers and how was it with 50000 vehicles as friends drives. Well Nazi what was the official attendance thirteen 613. Seven it would there was a lot of people there it was really exciting. That the some of the infielders were a little too excited the first batter. It's a pop up foul ball Francisco's her belly goes back and drops it. First -- still office. Still up the plate it's a foul ball the first baseline pop up first baseman drops it in the same at bat. And -- ball foul ball. -- that he gets a single so Pettit weighs about ten pitches on his first batter who should have been out twice. All and that was really that was this the story of the game early. Was Pettit got in trouble because of his fielders later in the inning there was another there was a throw away by the third baseman then in the second inning there was a drop fly ball in right field. It was in it was a circus in the field I think. -- a lot of players to be honest and probably a little bit nervous and -- -- many someone is so much media there and so many fans and Andy patted on the mound. It's I'll get to get back to -- the second but I was so unimpressed with Francisco -- alleys like I thought he was atrocious behind the plate. And he and actually got screamed at -- Pettit once we needed hustle after a ball that got away from him on a wild pitch or there was probably -- passed ball. And -- I will not be back in the major leagues in my mind but all yeah it anyway. And it ends up. His line didn't look that great eons of allowing five runs not -- were current maybe three. A lot of the outs were loud outs but he also wasn't present jacking up. Throwing Major League speed. He was throwing 86 to 88 looked like -- was focusing on mechanics and I would say that you know I would be too worried about it he looked his he looked in shape. He looks strong you looked like he was throwing his three pitches. And you know. They announced today that he's gonna get is his first start back. Unless you Sunday I think it is but the worst part of it is great atmosphere as always in frontier feel the worst part though was I got a terrible summer. I -- -- sudden it looks deployed a lobster yes exactly -- one side of me is fire hydrant the other side of me is just normal me. So are -- debt. I have to face it it's like. It's starting to feel a little bit capital L on it -- that it. But one side I mean I I did put sunscreen on one side and we just beatings on his. You know the the crowd was so -- -- get there early. And I was just standing beating son -- -- on MySpace for five hours -- you read that happened -- him. -- yeah I've I've been a funny at baseball game injury Cigna. In the grandstand the bleachers in the outfield and puts on screen on it really they'll tell and by the fifth inning to see yourself starting to get red red. Redder by the end of the game just -- you you -- bright red news it's just as much as much as you do you just you can never state. On -- I guess that's even a word yeah there's there's not much sell a -- Let me ask you this Matt 41 -- something else. I wanna talk about being from Rochester what that meant for the for the area because that was -- -- The Red Wings had to move their own games Saturday night play -- -- as the -- but. I mean when you look back at it. It had its start it was less to do with. The pitching line. Then was -- It looked throw his pitches were that -- where they play up to. You know Major League abilities and and that's. The biggest thing you look for when you see a guy -- robbery ever but going back to the major -- what did you see out of out of poetic stuff. It to tell yet -- this guy's ready OPEC took to New York well. First our first what did it mean to Rochester. I mean. Rochester does big events -- With there I mean if you remember. Heavy lombok coming back to play in Rochester she should play after the -- women's was a World Cup. Yell -- to -- to three days after an upper Alex Morgan the launch of the weapons USA Kenya -- -- -- -- Spoke to the crowd over the PA and you know kind of gave a speech and stuff. You know that that. That was a huge great event Stephen Strasburg coming to -- -- huge great event this was the second highest attended event ever at frontier field. Her game action today. Next to only an exhibition game in which cal Ripken played there. So. And it ended the best part of today goose bump moment was patted. Walks off everybody knows he's done and the whole crowd all 141000. Does the let's goal. Andy you know I mean -- -- in all that yeah then he came out and waive the cap that they -- call things that was. It was really cool and the second part of it was. To be honest from where from my vantage point. It was a little bit tough to see. His mechanics look great. Body look great. Obviously the pop wasn't there but I didn't expect it to be. And there was only you know early on. I had some questions because he was awful lot but by the 50s70. Pitch he was just blown down any picked off the guy so that was fun. Edit it and that means innately global audience now. Yeah that's schori yankees' pitching staff it's just it's been a disaster they expected it to be unbelievable with Kuroda and creator coming in use coming back it. He uses spin only okay in bad times Kuroda same thing and obviously opinion is disasters cell but. Before we before -- jet. Let me ask you. A big topic of the week overblown topic of the week and you have to take on this. Cole Hamels hitting out Bryce Harper what did you think. I -- I had my biggest problem with that is the fact that Cole Hamels after the game flaunts the fact that he was being quote unquote old school. And -- harper when he. Priced property and do anything to get it other than he had nineteen year old played apparently. We're back to the fifties or sixties were that's appropriate to at a guy he's young in the majors but. A link to me. And I put -- on Twitter yesterday if it. Fans follow me what are they know what I do follow -- nationals casually made a little weren't actually so -- may have a little slant on this but. If Obama team may have Cole Hamels if found Jimmy Rollins and a the next time I play against Washington now where one of the back. I wait till after the game I go on -- club also say -- That's what she did for putting team of putting yourself before the team and that's the problem I have with that is now everybody on the team. Asked to stand up for what Cole Hamels did. Even if they don't agree with that on the field they have to back their teammate where if Hamels -- harper. Hamels gets hit couple innings later it's over. But the fact that he goes out after the game and wants it. Major League Baseball hats to the token fight game suspension because you know you can't fault the fact that you went out and hit somebody -- purpose. -- one day suspension. Right it's it's it's a song and dance he's probably 8 o'clock in the rotation. He's he's gonna get to sit home watch TV for five days and then start on Saturday back in the rotation so to me it's more just the teammate thing in in the clubhouse and you know I just I wouldn't wanna be the guy that gets that. When I next time for the nationals and an have to. To stand up the call and say. What do you do -- and it just that's that's the biggest thing in the act I don't care about the suspension any Maurer. Or not the lack of you know the old school code or whatever it is I'm I'm pretty old school I don't remember. Nineteen adults getting hit the last 1015 years. I don't remember too many nineteen year old's word Major League Baseball -- ramping Edgar Jones. My I have a short and sweet take on this. When I pitched in high school and college. You ran into guys who had some -- on not saying they had Major League all time -- like Bryce Harper has but. As a as a competitor when you see a guy stand in the batter's box who you read about the newspaper here he's gonna go to the one. My any inkling was never even you know you know I've faced ninth graders who worst were supposed to be like in all a possibility -- want. That you heard about it you know the vocal beat writers copper on the you know that they cover the high school stuff. And word you know even in college there was a few guys who were supposed to be able to to go on from junior college up to a to. I never ever had the inkling to hit them because they were supposed to be good I always had the inkling to -- Really bear down and try to sort them out. It was my favorite thing ever when a guy would come in who was always talked about it it's athlete of the year in this and that to strike -- out. And if -- Cole Hamels. -- that's that's what I can't believe that you read don't and he went straight. I. So all the way yeah all harper at that -- -- -- actually Ronald Steele salt while. Don't let's talk Paul Hamels was thinking too much about how he was proud of himself in and didn't make a heads up -- look out that way. You got to step often throw you don't pick up your leg all the way to your chest. And then throw over because then -- disaster for you got to step office lefthander control over and the first baseman got to be paying attention. He's got to come out catch the ball and throw home instead of staying on the bag and the third baseman got to be paying attention because he's got a -- -- Roll over stepped off the site you know. And so it was a failure on three players parts there and I thought that I you're right I thought that was the best way to say shot. But you know surprise hey look he's he's an exciting ball where -- I've you look at his tools you disarm it is bat speed you what is his ability to run for such a strong kid he's exciting and I just I'm -- I wanna strike tomorrow. I don't understand wanting to -- Yeah I I I totally get that -- and I. Not having not played it at that level. I just I. That makes sense to me what what you're saying makes more sense to me than just plucking a guy because he's young and it up and coming player now I I -- Mean I'm I like old school like all eyes that's inept at fort. I just that's not old school to me. You know what I love the idea of like Bob Gibson you know I'll tell you what to -- I had two reasons for -- guy -- Number one. Was that the guy was tentacles like. Get -- okay you're not gonna make me throw out over the plate you know where outside looks like out over the plate. That's just kind of -- the deck so get off the plate that's why it -- and if they ran -- -- If they if they hit a double in -- out their -- at second base or you know some like that before the game right in the mouth. -- -- our guys or after a win say we lose. That they're saying and stuff. The next time -- -- get -- those the only two reasons ever purposely threw a guy like it feels cool -- that's that's what yeah that's. That that that make sense and I never and I never said that I get anybody amber it's. Anyway so okay well as their. I think I think were pretty much in agreement there that you look I don't I don't think it's the most I think well 11 last note on this and you'll have to tell me what you think. Why was Mike risen to like okay he got hit. Whatever it happens it's the majors why couldn't Mike Rizzo just say. I don't agree with it but this is the bigs -- this type -- thing he's gonna have to deal with. Why couldn't just say that instead -- saying it's outwardly he did he eat its use threatening language point. Well I'm not and its I'm not gonna criticize a general manager cannot actually had an opinion. I'm far too often we had -- to just say -- that's part of the game -- so what their team and and mobile -- I'm sure he probably shouldn't have said he dropped -- all. All languages and right. And that stuff you probably shouldn't tell the newspaper and probably keep yourself but I'm not gonna criticize the GM for having an opinion and and having conviction behind and. Now I think that I think what happens there is if you go so far over the top -- feel bad for your player. Instead they just think. Well c'mon that's that's way over the top there's there's reacting with strong language and then there's jet then there's just going so far over the top over something that really wasn't that big -- deal so. That's when I think about it but anyway pat before we run you mentioned Twitter your handle if you don't. Played a simple WG RP team WG and mine is Matthew WGR we will we all roll again next week -- lawsuits going on them. But it fortunate thanks thanks rob buddy that's. Patton hall Carl foam on Twitter if you don't that I don't like you were not friends. All right and follow me to have Matthew WGR we'll catch you next week here on WGR baseball podcast.
