Senseless. Unlike the shelves today. That intro is absolutely senseless Matthew scholar here with. -- -- about sports -- Saturday sitting in force Alka pot GO sale is missing are nice weather. To have a little fun of his own in the sun in Florida will be playing golf all week. And so he'll be gone this Saturday and then next Saturday is while he's out on the course in Florida. He's lived in Florida for awhile and you know had back to his home away from home what it. So today a lot of stuff talk about all sorts of things going on sports we have Rangers and Devils going on at 1 o'clock and Joseph your. From pro hockey talk NBC sports he is going to be on as the Rangers Devils games start so hopefully didn't. Concentrate on us while watching game two -- we're -- ask him about. A number of things with that series with the Western Conference finals we might even drop a little. John to order -- a press conference question on him ABC. How he feels about that and maybe I'll even bother him to see if he cares that. Colin Cowherd likes to offend. Young cheap hockey writers as he called them earlier this week. Tiger from the Buffalo -- and he's the voice of the Buffalo -- and he's gonna come on about 120. And he's gonna talk about the -- hot start I was at the game last night covering the game for a station. Wrote an article about bill astute GW GR 550 dot com to check it out this coaching. There's been a member of via -- since the last couple years hit two home runs last night as I was writing articles. You know. He knew about helping out. So we're gonna talk a little bit to -- that comes up at once warning about the of the Buffalo buys their good start they played tonight -- field. 7 o'clock they're basically comical feel for the rest of your life the next two weeks they're playing every single Michael coal fields wanna see some baseball. That's the place to be good baseball last night great place to go for game always enjoyed. Also the NBA playoffs we're gonna try to stay as far away from the NBA playoffs as we can possibly get. Because last night the Los Angeles Lakers won game which they took 42 free throws and made 41. Now personally I think that if you're an MBA player you should be able to make them any free throws I can brought my backyard to make seven out of ten wide open. So they make 41 of 42 which is impressive no matter what but the fact of the matter is they scored nearly half their points. On free throws. I mean that means half the time they were dribbling down the court and scoring. Someone it was because someone follow them. So I mean I didn't see the game. Is that really honestly haven't been much into the NBA playoffs. But that has to have been the most boring game and history of sports. I mean people complain about the doubles and the Rangers and how ugly. This series is how nobody can score and how it's all about the trap and this and that shot blocking were all complaining. While watching a game where most of the scoring is made up of a guy standing -- a line wide open and shooting. -- Kobe Bryant was eighteen for eighteen at the free throw line. Boy nothing more exciting than seeing Kobe Bryant standalone. Wide open. And make shots because he's in the NBA. And asked me the most boring thing in the history of the world. So we're not -- After delve too much in analyzing which team was better shooting wide open fifteen feet away from the rim. Because apparently the Lakers are by three good for them and and you have to wonder they're down two games to none of the thunder. Talk about we talk about the NHL refereeing being bad you gotta wonder if the NBA's going nudge nudge makes this make sure this one goes seven. Right like you remember the old. Lakers in Sacramento Kings. Just always happen to go seven there was always a critical call. Not saying in any thing I'm just sane right. And yesterday something really cool happened in sports really cool it doesn't get any cooler than this to me Kerry Wood. Decided that he was gonna call courts that you gonna hang it up title laces together hang them up on the shelf forever never play again. But he decided he's gonna go pitch one more time. He goes out last night. He strikes out the last hitter that he faces in and they come to take him out. And then this happens. And that was that. And that's how his career ended his career ended in front of about 40000 fans. Going absolutely bananas watching him walk off and he picks up his young son probably. Five to seven years old and hugs him in front of the entire crowd. And I was sitting there watching them yesterday I was actually at the buys and ballpark and you see their video board. Oh my goodness that the video board coking -- field is humongous and beautiful. And they had it up on her on the board as I'm standing waiting to talk them they'll dispute yesterday and I was thinking as I'm watching guys. It does not get any better that you can't leave. The game any game any sport any -- any team any better than walking off. To hug your young son in front of 40000 giving you -- standing ovation especially. With a great career of the Kerry -- -- of course we all think that maybe it could have been a little bit better. But it was a great career overall. So I got the big yesterday. Of all the departures. Of Buffalo athletes. Football. Hockey whatever. They have just that I wish had been like that. We're so ugly so -- To stand watching some of the best athletes to ever play sports in this town. Walk out that door. And have it not be like that. Because so many that we lost a retirement or trades or July 1 and it's you know win and you know who. We've watched them walk out the door whether it be into the sunset for retirement or whether beat other teams in such ugly ways. And I thought men. How many Buffalo athletes in immediately thought -- -- and they came to mind. That deserved so much better. And that's the things that's what I hear from you today one of the things we're gonna talk about. Is Buffalo athletes that deserved to walk out of Buffalo like that. Walk out of Buffalo walked out of Ralph Wilson Stadium to 60000. People cheering their name. Standing out. Or walk out of first Niagara center in the last time the last skate around. Like that. And they're so men and an the first one came to line for a lot of people. Is OJ Simpson he finished his career with San Francisco. -- Of course. Dominic cash it comes to mind. -- would we have liked for all the great years that Dominik Patrick was here instead of having a bad taste our mile about the way he -- To have actually been able to stand up and cheer for him to walk out in and his career like that. I thought of Bruce Smith. Thurman Thomas Andre Reed we all wish all of these starters. They come to mind that left in ways that we did not want them to lead. And I thought. Is there any Buffalo athlete ever that you could think of that did leave that way it did leave on the right terms I can think of -- right off the top of my head of ones that left on bad terms. But I can't think of a single one right away all the great ones I mean even you know Pat LaFontaine Michael packed up. Matt Barnaby all going in the wrong ways even rob -- all the guys off that team still Bart's. Remember how upset Stu Barnes was to leave. All those guys they left in the wrong way. They'd -- none of them had their chance to walk off in the sunset it just shows you first of all how incredibly rare it is to be able to do that. What Kerry Wood did yesterday I -- used his saw a lot of people tweeting about it on Twitter talking about it and just it's. You know when you see you think -- first. Well that's nice but then you realize man -- special was this mean just look at all the great athletes across even sports and you know. Hakeem Olajuwon Patrick Ewing. Michael Jordan. All superstars. -- got to have that moment. Not. I mean none of those guys got in the moment Brett Favre I mean I think of John Elway he got to have it. He got the ride off into the sunset when the Super Bowl and have everybody cheering his name. But outside of that it's few and far between that you could pick up and look at this year we got Peyton Manning. And he's. Their plan for the Denver Broncos imagine -- back goes bad that'll be the wrong way that we are wrong way to walk out. So why is it why is -- that that happens so often in sports why isn't that something like what happened to -- what yesterday's so rare. And has that ever happened to Buffalo where an athlete has been able to walk off into the sunset also another facet of this if you want -- 8030558. A 30550. Or tax 55550. You watch that all day. To follow me on Twitter at Matthew WGR -- sports -- Saturday I am also joined by -- -- who was behind glass he's going to be taking care of these sports updates. And as soon as he catches up on the sports updates he will be. Joining me in the conversation. And just. Okay good the year okay. Pitcher. Who's the favorite in the preakness. Oh that's the name horse I -- that's the favorite I thought it was someone else. Okay well that's the one that's going for the potential Triple Crown. So I don't know much about horse racing you wanna talk about that Joba -- and Greg bout will be hosting from 25 era WG. So Buffalo athletes why don't they go out the right way first the ball. It only seems to be something else but it. Never seems that they've gone out the right way so -- maybe we have a lot of a lot of sports fans around here for a little bit my senior. Who might remember an athlete going out the right way in Buffalo but I had trouble thinking of one and I wish that for so many athletes but another facet of this. Is cool right now in Buffalo sports would you like to see go out that way. 80305. That the feel free to give me call we got Bryant right now in a car Brian go ahead. -- I'm well thank you aren't familiar opponent that I'm the one that it's on to become the green and it's really our -- -- just bought it on net but. The money but I still Terrell would want to. Political career here and -- Youth League have been guarding the court -- to the new Egypt but I don't I don't quit and Eddie. I'm an announcement that speak at -- playing. They got all that just up and what I haven't gone -- really -- what about. Don't look like sports figure we've ever had but you can call on trying to get OJ. You know that group and -- got quite a lot but played -- pretty not Belichick like I didn't even know. What the contraction. Right things right his last his last games he. You know I was talking about this before the show with -- and David. I was saying he did go out the worst way. But of course he reminded me of the action thinks he O'Brien do you think it's basically. Because of -- in the new way but it seems like even when you go back. You don't find too -- yard imagined OJ what do you think that is. Are not -- -- -- I'm at bat at the time after watching him. We've got the twilight of his career and the -- to have a number Q double -- arm which we didn't -- -- and we got pretty good package coach. Go play but -- out and that's all that bad but it gets to a point where. There's just been the greatest athletes I'm sure. -- -- line and it just really don't know because -- a -- they've ever done in the back on topic actually just. I picked up that they don't want more water one more great game that up. Yeah you know what Brian I think you're right I really appreciate the call it a 305 that the feel pretty call -- -- make some good points. And with Jordan it's absolutely that problem Shaquille O'Neal hung on way too long. I guess I don't wanna make is all about the athletes who have disappointed I was by leaving in the wrong way I. I'm more of wanna ask has it ever happened that an athlete didn't leave the wrong way and who is the one guy that comes to your mind that you wish. Had. -- cash it was the first one and OJ also passionate you just can't help but with a bad taste in your mouth of course. Even more modern you even wish that saying a player like even maybe someone like Mike reread it. I mean did feel free to get creative on -- I thought. I don't look at you. -- your first call would you disagree with Mike where I wish that he had gone out -- I wish he would. I mean he was he was so well liked and so good with the team. -- second time when his career came to win and I wish he would add one skater on the rank. Right. I forgot about it to be honest I forgot about the last game I always think of just the retirement. That's right. I did throw out Stu Barnes is name early yeah. -- Ted Washington. Ruben Brown reminds me of it the same way with him. He was a pro bowler in the team to what the -- maybe. Yeah. Doug Flutie jackets today. I'm forty doesn't feel quite the same to me because because he has played for other teams and. Right. Right. Right. Now yeah okay actually I -- so you. I mean it's kind of hard and his situation and you would've liked to have seen him have better but I think gets it at that time no I feel like everyone was kind of like. Maybe it's time to. Changed things around right I don't know that there was a lot of people going boy I'm. I'm jumping off the ship if he doesn't come back maybe arm maybe -- wrong about that. Maybe I'm not remembering correctly. I hinted injury -- I hit that I didn't wanna say it. Because you don't want -- like I mean. Because there's two sides of that story you know we know that the Dallas on outside we know the Sabres side we also know their side. And I think that everybody kind of has the opinion that both of them kinda got. You know run out of here -- way you're not offered what they deserve whatever else and at the same time they got paid so helpfully if that's a word. In Briere got such a big contract. It is a work -- is that the leeward. Sell anyway Matthew -- here sports fox Saturday opponent herself upon GO I -- along with Darren -- will be here until 2 o'clock and has an update. Coming up here we're talking about how athletes in Buffalo and their careers and who we wished. Would have ended it the way Kerry Wood ended his yesterday. Will be back with more conversation about that welcome your calls it a 30515. Here's Dan with the update WGR. Back -- of sports -- Saturday -- -- along with Dan gave a little Foo Fighters in the background there Dan and I are arguing. About basically. Kind of the meaning of all -- so of what really means so to walk out. What really means to. Walk into the sunset or not. Because we're debating Dominic cash in the way I'm looking at it is Kerry Wood. His career was basically if not completely over why acknowledge it it was very. Yesterday. Completely over we assume he's not gonna make a comeback he's walking out and ending his career like that. And I guess -- but what I'm thinking here is that whether it be a player being traded. Or signing somewhere else in free agency I guess what what I'm thinking is that. We would want to have that moment to show appreciation. That we never got I guess that's what I'm looking at it with -- -- it was also better. What did afterward. He had his moments afterward but he was never the same never led the league in anything again except. Wins with Detroit in his first year but he never landed goals against. Or save percentage big categories in lead in those categories meaning he was here is very good. But he led the league in save percentage for seven straight years -- with awful. And then never did it again. Like best of all time numbers yet. 44043. Games. He's splitting time from you that he was never even close he was never calls. He did win the Stanley Cup you can play in those playoffs. It was he barely played he might have played one game in those playoffs he played. Four games in the playoffs. -- that now he was oh okay all right you're ready play the whole thing. Okay wrong one I was looking at 070 okay fine all right so we had okay so we had a Stanley Cup moment right that's about as betters against for Buffalo Sabres fan. Does he walk out and do that. What I think but. Right. And that was it but I think we're missing the point a little bit like OK assuming that he goes to Detroit either way. Okay he's going to Detroit either way his time is done in Buffalo. Q should the goal goes in. He skates off enough that was -- we see -- we never get a chance. To have that moment with Dominic cachet to show the appreciation. For all the years of it lead greatness and I guess. I guess you don't I brought up Mike Grier before and I thought well okay. I guess what I'm looking for here is showing appreciation for all the years of great. Right. -- And Briere and burrito. Everybody makes friends right. Right. -- Thurman right. I guess that's why it's so rare. And that's why it's so special that's like it's replayed on sports and -- -- MLB network because it doesn't happen very often. Because got like you don't like the caller said early on you know 30550. Could jump in the conversation. A lot of guys that they try to stretch it out too long they still think they've got it in the tank or. They decided they wanna take the big money the Sabres -- bills don't wanna pay it. And they leave and you never get that moment that's the nature of sports we understand why it happens but why it's so special with Kerry -- is because it's so rare. He's walking off that field. And he gets that just that one moment you can hear it in the clip when the crowd just goes up the crescendo just rises up. That this -- height of just energy. And showing how much. -- what is meant that franchise and I think that Kerry Wood goes underrated because it's too often talking more about it injuries. That it is talking about how great he was a player also provided. If not the greatest pitching performance of all time one of them and one of the agreement greatest moments in Cubs history playoffs all that he was at the forefront. So the Cubs fans their Wrigley Field. They were they were saying goodbye -- -- in the right way got a few -- coming up a lot of Pat LaFontaine. Coming in I totally agree with that his greatness it kinda gets it doesn't get washed over on legit Sabres fans. But it kinda leave you with a -- -- -- amount that you never really got to show the appreciation for him and I always think the same way with Michael -- to package gets traded. It all kinda goes down and ugly way not the way that you would want it to go. 8030550. Phone number Matthew -- here on sports talk Saturday I'm a long -- and cable is producing also providing updates. Go to Mike got a cell but what might. -- -- -- -- Chocolate. -- -- that sort of let the girl -- that we are so Hampton. You know you're regarded billion you know get it there it looked like better. The other guy they don't I don't actually know rallies. We. Don't want to hear it hear it pretty well it. Albeit rare you I didn't. Know yeah yeah you ain't no way it. Earlier don't -- -- something to be a bit city. -- well but. Well what's our cut him off there oh my bad odds are about that is great example. As a great example I apologize at the wrong one I'm sorry for cutting off that was a great example. Of TERRELL OWENS now think all the players that you would've liked to have seen. Walked around the field and their very last game giving high fives getting the cheers that sort of thing as a great example I apologize for cutting them off but. -- Boy that's sad isn't it their all the athletes were they of the great great Buffalo athletes and how poorly they win now. Bruce Smith Thurman Thomas Andre -- even Jim Kelly. That at the end we never got to show the true appreciation. For how good they actually worried how much they've meant to the city in sports history. Its role Owens he's the one that had a great. -- that's irony at its worst. -- in Hamburg what's going on -- They met the third time -- I would I think when you guys touched down and just just a few moments ago this is the nature of the beast. Are caused by as free agency in the huge dollars and stands. Kinda get shafted. Because Lugo moments of tiger saying goodbye and and the glory. Our other dog because you guys either. You know they think they can get one more contract played one more season. And you know. They had in the aspect that kinda left hole in the bag. Arm and it's. Kind of a shame because -- I can remember. Way back when when average John BNL -- -- -- me believe guardians. -- -- he saw me the last game and everybody knows it. And the last 510 minutes of the game we're taught English -- -- ovation and -- tribute to all. Saying yeah yeah Lawton. Never forgot I that I have to be seventeen or eighteen years old or also. And I haven't seen anything like your sense and I'm I'm now or sub. And that you know it just tells you how much the game has changed and it's something that. I wish more guys would do and what they know certain it's -- Rick what do you think misses loses out more on this the player the fan and the player never gets the feel the appreciation. The fan never gets to give their appreciation I think it's kind of 5050. The record I would reckon it's that that actual question I do think it's it's. Repeat that you convert them the opportunity. You know if you guys in in the sporting world and -- all of them mentioned regrets I wish I would just. Stayed in the -- bare block because the free agency. Or being traded. You know -- -- -- an opportunity and a lot of home. Really have a closer place and art forward replay and they don't get that chance to say goodbye -- so I I totally agree I think it is 5050. Yeah I think you're right thanks for the call Rick excellent call. Here's one of a lot of people are saying this is Jack had a cellphone Jack what's going on. They are you do one -- Good conversation. You guys got a good Schobel -- is anyone's mentioned Steve tasker yet. They have not that's a great one actually got a couple attack saying it and I was gonna get there. Obviously he goes out. Being ejected from the game Steve tasker is is a big one I think. He he's still in the community he's still seen all the time he was probably one of the top dishonorable -- never played a game for the bills. You gotta appreciate him and I hope all the fans appreciated. I think they do and I think that's one thing that we really like about sports in Buffalo is that we do have appreciation for guys like Steve tasker and operate. Who do give it all who do remain in the communities I think you're right I think we would have liked to have had that moment with Steve tasker. Where everybody could have stood on their feet and cheered for him just for just for thirty seconds I think. I just depleted focused dude out daring he gave it is all just like all the people work for about -- steal and work planned all end up with -- -- -- Yeah I have a I agree man I agree thanks for the call Jack I really appreciate it almost up against the break it a snake sneak one more phone call and -- before we go to the break this little bit controversial. -- west Seneca because Dan -- -- was with me here today we were talking about this one a little bit what he got in. Our Doug Doug Flutie. A couple of one of the most popular -- on sports figures we've got Buffalo leads. Are all god in recent years. We would probably the most out all coming up -- belliard. And he brought spark back in the game. Through it and break it around but he's the one that orchestrated in my opinion it is happening and I mean that we play on the go out which felt. You know and it would -- upon I. And it fit in when they made that the sentiment I'm battle in an -- like. You know you know Leiter doing it but. Maybe it wasn't a what we thought it was going to be and when we left the light. I don't know felt -- -- -- -- -- guy with he was the underdog he was on the lot on the field made things happen. And then the likable guy in my opinion. Right so and in his case it was kind of like Flutie just faded away right and he didn't. It wasn't like he had some career ending injury or that he was traded or it was just kind of like well. He's just not part of the plan and he kind of went away and you never got a chance the relief. So the appreciation for -- I see it ICI -- very much appreciate the called Dan I see where -- -- from -- that. I guess with those years I think about -- split the city was and you'll probably have half the people who would call in and say. Boy I wish we could have I wish we could've said that by the flew to the right way and another bunch who -- probably like. Now I wanted to go on anyway. Yeah I think you're right. It really was like that that -- really was like that. And many just kind of like it's just kind of fade away like -- -- -- not here anymore and then the Drew Bledsoe all of that stuff kinda took over now. I don't think you're gonna get anybody bring up his name is. Yeah I don't think anybody wants him a pitcher for Drew Bledsoe I mean -- it's funny though because we say that in the first -- that comes and says Doug Flutie was overrated. So very well and I guess you know at the same time you could say. Those teams some of those teams had Super Bowl caliber skill I don't think that that's it. It's an overstatement to say it's Super Bowl caliber skill and neither Rob Johnson or Doug Flutie can get it done although I will say. Doug Flutie not starting game against the Titans -- I still can't believe it. Now we won't bring that up that's the last thing in the world. They were gonna bring up. Anyway. Matthew dollar decades here. So proud of mark -- so we think that. That he learned yet that -- have access to -- probably my body just I retired I mean I I guess I wouldn't of thought of I'd like marquise gray broadcaster I don't know if I would have thought like. People are just still dying to stand up and -- -- -- No offense to him because he was a great player. Okay well we will look at I think he just retired we gotta we gotta take a break. 8030551. Thing that we haven't talked about that we're gonna talk about next is is there a single. Athlete in Buffalo sports right now. You want to see you walk off into the sunset the right way I have one. I have one when we come back -- -- Saturday at the collar and gave he's got the update right now at the -- year. Back here on sports stock -- and Matthew collar filling in force out apology he is. Alex down in Florida for the next two weeks I'll be -- He until 2 o'clock today a lot going on in sports course the New Jersey Devils in New York Rangers. They play game 3 at 1 o'clock the series tied at one game -- And so far it's been pretty boring won't get into that. A little bit more. I do we like it. I haven't decided yet I think. There have been some entertaining aspect I saw uninteresting argument on Twitter between two people one was saying. You know that boy this is boring in the other -- when he me all the games are close when it comes down to the end doesn't get any better than that. In hockey especially in the playoffs so. There's some arguments being made dank cave is with -- he's producing today and we'll get into that a little more we've been talking so far here on sports -- Saturday about. The way that Buffalo athletes especially legendary athletes have left Buffalo and how often it's been a disappointment. And we played earlier the clip of Kerry Wood in the way that Kerry Wood walked off. It Wrigley Field yesterday and I thought that is the epitome it does not get any better than that short of winning the Super Bowl. And being carried off but even then you could make an argument that it's better. Then winning the Super Bowl because when you win a Super Bowl. You went in front of a bunch of strangers. A bunch of people from South Florida -- corporate people. We knew when you walk off after striking out a guy Wrigley Field. You walk off the front of 40000. Cubs fans who probably many know about this know exactly what's going on by the end of the game. They absolutely know what's going on by the time you walk off. That that to me is more special than walking off the Super Bowl you walk off with a super ball for you personally. It's great. I won the Super Bowl and I'm being carried off by my teammate this is as good as it gets for me. But when it comes to the fans showing appreciation for a player who gave so much to the city and so much that team. I think it's a little bit different and and game -- I'm talking about how there's so many of these athletes. That have gone out the wrong way and it starts with OJ Simpson Dominic -- and there's just as long long ways. One it still sticks in me is Michael pack up. Traded because the disease and Pat LaFontaine is coming got a lot of names sort of talking about. First of all why it happens that so many players go out in the wrong way isn't just us or is it all sports. And also I had one athlete who is currently awful right now why not. Really fits -- and can think of any yourself. -- year. Well you know what you know Ryan Miller's name comes up he's not the one that I was gonna go with right away. Because -- I'm on the fence about rhyme and talk about that some more later but he's not who I thought. Brian Gorman came in and you know what I'm not gonna laugh at that I'm not gonna laugh at that. It's not what. Boy all the things that Brian Mormon is done charitably as well as being American punter charitably. Deserves recognition but -- We're talking about -- can Kelly and Andre Reid here I mean it's kind of hard to put Brian mormons name in the -- even though. He's one of my favorite players it's John Tavarez. John -- bars I know you're rolling your eyes at me like oh my god is like the greatest. Lacrosse player ever want cross guy but if there's one player in Buffalo sports right now -- to say job. You have to. He he deserves it he's OK he deserves it. He is there if there's one like is he is -- -- he's meant more of that team in any bills or Sabres players currently on the roster. Okay you just don't look at me so we'll go to the phones we got Scott -- -- Scott what's going on. They -- today. Hit -- -- and -- Beck is yeah I love it that the great great topic Ahmed a little slip that one now Marty Barack. He actually got ejected after you biting. And that we get wrapped up in. Any big abiding and you're straight two. I think the build up via some option and then -- -- being is that that a lot. Basically. There is basically about sports Austria.
