And avoided talking about it's something really interesting happen in sports yesterday that you really don't get to see every day. Here's we get to see every day slam dunks you think slam dunks. As somebody called yesterday to show open the Bulldog and retired about. Howell slam dunks are easy yet it's always the highlight that's pretty funny right elegant like added I never thought of it that way but I think that is funny that wouldn't. Something's easy. You call it a slam dunk and yet it's always the highlight. The wise and it was the highlight if it's so easy it's true conundrum. Anyway says something in sports happened yesterday that does not happen every day effect is very rare. Kerry -- got to go out as they say on his own terms. He got to walk off the mound after striking out a batter his final batter ever into retirement. To the tune of 40000. Fans. Screaming his name standing ovation and showing their appreciation for how good Kerry Wood was during his career as -- Great great moment. And it got me thinking yesterday as I was watching it. How many guys. In buffalo sports do I wish this had happened for. How many. And the names came flooding and boy I wish that Michael -- could just skated around one time with a stick up in the air right. -- cash at the same thing is is many issues is the word with hat shake. So many great times that you wish you could have. -- appreciation for OJ Simpson for as bad as it is now with OJ Simpson is ugly as our. Viewpoint of him is at these days. Think about at that time. He just got traded for some. Draft picks and this just doesn't seem right. It seems like OJ even if he was gonna leave interviews gonna go somewhere else via free agency I guess you think the same thing about somebody like Danny prayer Chris Drury. Even though you knew they were gonna leave let's just say okay fine we knew they were gonna leave why don't you wish we could just said. Goodbye and thank you. I know that they left for more money and everybody screwed up the sabres screwed up in May you can call them people call them greedy in this event. What have I don't care what side you're on that. By. When they left they just left and that was it and they -- other places. And then you know -- -- still good factories careers over and you never got the same. Hey honestly man thanks because that was a great run. And I guess where we're at right now with buffalo sports. That run just looks better and better the more we move on. It's not like. Now while we went on to win the Stanley Compton who cares. It's like those those of the the best times since then. It's been first round outs. So. Then came an -- asking is -- buffalo athlete right now who you'll want. Badly to leave buffalo whenever he does let there be free agency whether it be trade whether it be retirement. On the right terms like Kerry Wood did yesterday and either Ralph Wilson Stadium first Niagara center etc. And there's one name that came to mind or that was brought up that I found to be extremely. Extremely interest thing. And I've also got a call so I will let these callers Scott. Say that name's Scott go ahead. They can't hurt me on Oprah. Yeah that that -- to me it's -- exactly that I just he would he would become let's say my my favorite book that he's become. Most people -- -- would it be. -- the story I think you know I think everyone being from you know being too much and York Democrat but this guy came from you know undrafted. Outplayed and treated for minor leaks no one ever expected disrespect it we'll never expecting probably ought obsolete everything. He's never gotten. Got Fred Jackson you make all or you make all the right statements on Fred Jackson. He is unquestionably. Unquestionably. One of the greatest underdog stories in sports at any given moment. And he is undoubtedly. A guy who represents the city and represented seemed perfectly. The problem is the teams that he's been on. By no fault of his own -- -- They have not won. They have accomplished. Absolutely nothing. And when I look at these teams -- far the Fred Jackson has been on. I don't look back at these teams and think. Boy. We need to appreciate them the same way that we look at -- six teams three -- teams. Kelly's teams Andre reed where it's not just. Thanks for being good but it's thanks for everything with the whole team and being a leader being the guy that we look to for years and years. Like we did with with Briere and Drury obviously there's a lot of good players on those teams but those -- the faces. And Fred Jackson. I. Like Fred Jackson as much as anybody else and I think I think that Fred Jackson is an incredible story and a guy that. If you don't. Root for Fred Jackson you've got a problem with you right. But really. The team hasn't done anything. I mean he's a guy that -- cheer for. But I don't think that anybody on the Buffalo Bills or Buffalo Sabres right now. Deserves that kind of treatment to Kerry Wood got yesterday I feel like there's one. There's about one player that you could really make an argument for that you could really fight tooth and -- -- Ryan Miller. And as much venom is there is toward Ryan Miller mostly because he gets paid a lot of money. And you expect him a lot of people expect him to win the vezina trophy every single year because he gets paid a lot of money that there's this. Anger toward him that might prevent people from saying yes when he believes I want to show the appreciation. I can't say anyone on the Buffalo Bills that would change if the bills went to the playoffs this year. This that would absolutely change Ryan Fitzpatrick would be that guy even if they just went to the playoffs once when Fitzpatrick laughed. He would be that guy. And Fred Jackson will be that guy Stevie Johnson will be that guy we would talk about them. In the same kind terms because they would be the guys who turn the franchise around and got them to the playoffs after so long. But right now. I can't do it I can't say it I can't cinnamon Fred Jackson leaves that. I will really be upset. If Ralph Wilson Stadium is an all on their feet cheering his one for Fred Jackson. And that's not to say anything bad about him it simply say they think he just has been on a team that's done any thing. You could say well it's not all his fault he's been very good. Okay. He's right he's been very good but I'm not nostalgic about these teams at all. There's nothing there's not been pulled me toward these teams like there is with the 0607 sabres. Nothing nothing is hold me back on the east teams and thinking well -- everybody could have been better in those days and don't really care. Sure the story that it's not written yet of course it's not but I can't I can't go ahead in just. Right and that they make the playoffs and -- and you can Ville Leino is gonna score fifty goals next year we'll cheer him to. Greatness. Yeah well because it's unfortunately. Right now probably Ville -- would be the last guy that anybody would be cheering off the ice blue -- would be more like it for Billy. He would he would I don't know who would be below him but let's let's get a call an -- Jackson and then I wanna ask you about Ryan Miller. What's what's going on. I met you don't want to how good a good -- -- at a clinic on the real facts that. Two things one would you brought the question not -- popular within the situation and acted the way you. That wage is a fan base should appreciate good people. Act like Kerry Wood. Wasn't at the forefront of the reinvention. Of the cubs in the early 2000 is becoming an actual contender. Because for years from the freaking eighties. All the way through the ninety's they were mostly a joke. And Karen -- When he came in and struck out wanna in 98. They actually started to become a playoff contender. Year after year. A contender whether they actually made it or not and obviously they were really close to making the World Series 2003. There's Kerry Wood. Right at the forefront being if not these phase of the franchise one of the faces of the franchise. Of winning. At least thought of because of these arm injuries but if you really look at his career he's the ace of a team that. Which of the playoffs and compete for a World Series that had not competed. For years. Now if Fred Jackson -- of the playoffs and he's the face of the franchise one of the three faces we can all agree. Jackson. And Stevie Johnson on the offensive side of the ball. Look at them the same way if they reinvent this team and finally get the back to the playoffs and make contenders. So here's the question on Fred Jackson. Suppose that Fred Jackson had left. Fred Jackson. Screw this I want out I wanna be traded. You guys won't renew my contract suppose that have been the case and it got ugly. Would you have looked back at this time. One years from now the way that we do with hat -- or OJ or Briere Drury where we will look back and say. Boy. I really wish he had gone out on his own terms I really wish Fred Jackson had gone out as long terms. So I don't think that you know you can't put it there. The -- does it look you just have to be a superstar. But he's clearly it's gonna matter whether the team won and the cubs did win when Kerry Wood was their -- they did win they were good they were competitors. So he when we bring up a player -- special to a team that was you know in the Stanley Cup. Or in the Eastern Conference finals it's so much different than a player who was consistently on seven and nine teams. That Fred Jackson deserves to leave that way I happen to see it as if it it does depend on what happens and I'll make this I'll make the difference right here because. And you had a lot of great defenseman unit Jason Woolley Jay McKee and Brett Warren -- don't we -- -- Sorry Michael -- Was the heart and soul of a team that went to the Stanley Cup you can see the difference. And Michael peck believes by just being traded to the islanders. That makes you mad that and that's what I mean does it. Get your emotion up. That you feel like Michael pack -- and the fans both lost out. On him not being honored the way that he should have -- when he left I feel that way I absolutely feel that way. And when it comes to Fred Jackson. Not yet that's what I wanna -- on Fred Jackson I wanna say not yet we'll get there may be. Get their only if they wind that's the way I look at it. I think that Fred deserves all the credit in the world for who he is and what his story means the buffalo. But unless the Buffalo Bills break this long streak of no playoffs and become relevant nationally and not a joke. Then no I wouldn't really clear the way the Fred Jackson left. Not trying to be mean to say that but honestly I really wouldn't. If Fred Jackson left today left in this off season I wouldn't have sat back and thought. Oh god I wish that Fred Jackson had really been honored before he left I wouldn't have thought that. I would've thought. We got somebody else. If somebody else can be a good running back now if they go to the playoffs I'm looking at that differently. And this is in a totally different viewpoint then you would look at OJ Simpson who's an all time legend who is a Buffalo Bill. Who you just. You wanna think of them as you have ownership over this great great player and you wish that he had gone out the right way that honored the right way. As opposed to -- he was traded for couple picks you know I guess I guess some projects I know where I stand and I understand why people stand where they stand. Because while they like Fred Jackson a lot. And I don't blame anybody like him Fred Jackson a lot. Now Ryan Miller is more interest thing because Ryan Miller is more accomplished in terms of playoffs. And is in terms of Olympics obviously and is the terms of -- the trophy and things hardware basically. He's more accomplished. Than Fred Jackson by -- a lot. He's an all star caliber goalie. Who has been a mainstay in buffalo through parts of a very good time and parts of then OK time. And I think that there's a lot of venom toward him because of his contract. That he makes too much money for goalie and all this and I wonder if he was leaving he said it was his last game ever if we would give them the treatment if we would want given the treatment that the cubs gave to Carey wore it yesterday. One that was the leader of good teams and I think he won the Stanley Cup obviously didn't. But he was a leader a very good teams that brought a lot of great memories to this to the city that's what I'm looking for that's what Fred Jackson -- in this argument. Is that. There is no you're the face of the franchise. Win some of the greatest moments in the franchise happen and you were an icon who represented our city the right way. If you're gonna argue against Ryan Miller. That's your argument not that he's overrated. That's a terrible argument if you say over rate. That's not the argument if you wanna make it aren't mean you could say they're Ryan Miller was not. The face of the franchise. When they accomplished. Big things Eastern Conference finals. When they gave us those great memories Ryan Miller was just. The good gold. He was not the face of the franchise that could change. Beckett certainly changed as he is still the face of the franchise though they pay Ville -- like that he is still the face of the franchise Mecca change next year but as of right now. I'm not on Miller. I'm not I'm Miller because he's because when he's been the face of the franchise is not. When the sabres accomplished big things it was when Danny Briere was and Chris Drury was. I kind of feel like they have done something about it it's stopped calling penalties penalties this year power play opportunities per team. -- at their lowest since 1968. And people look at why is there more goals why is the more goals we go back to right after the lockout they're calling everything. All the little clutches and grabs trips and everything. And there was a lot more scoring won't be whole big surprise I mean I think we're seeing pretty much a perfect storm of know scoring. When it comes to actually eastern and Western Conference but especially. Rangers -- devils two teams that are superior. Defensive teams in an era in which you don't get many power plays you don't get many chances to score right. And that that the I think that it's disturbing to me because we. The -- like you -- after the lockout the big thing was was calling penalties but look at. And don't think you know in making sure that seemed that there -- -- other opportunities to score. In -- cracking down into the that the structure but that was the -- saying it. Over the years it's kind of going away illiterate. Well that's because they're -- -- getting that by eight by -- isn't culture and an expert theological work. Just because you know that they -- video that played all of the decided. He let the play that decided the game that if you just go like -- get away with regular rules and it's the league's call bigotry and yeah yeah. His strategy against the flyers to me was absolutely brilliant and his. Stayed away kind of -- -- like we're not gonna get involved in that crap like the penguins did. I think that he's kind of put himself on the map has made -- one of the league's best coaches in this in this playoffs. He's done a really nice job with a double -- -- yeah it does the reason why would ever go higher it was was for -- The Panthers team he coached before you know before. Or let it in New Jersey way to get the double play with intensity in your face it played very tough defensively you know that they didn't score well. -- -- the wind blew my form but they did but. The interstate -- top of everybody that's exactly what these double and they they. Unfortunately. This series so far has not been open is not that exciting I guess. One thing they -- is troubling me is I feel like whoever wins this series is the person. Who gets all weird bounce off the boards or has something just bizarre happen. Somebody's stick breaks in their own zone and it turns to -- all I feel like. These these two teams it's just gonna come down to pure luck I guess that kind of upsets me I want one team to be better than the other one and that's why they win not just well that team got lucky and that's what happened. All the same thing it'll actually if you have that sense he's lucky he went the teaching -- -- -- we. And in this there's the picture you'll put that in the series where. -- played so tight. It's just one out here that they decided. It's that was it for the Rangers and their first -- series follow it doesn't -- -- -- no one breaker and other than you know lots more -- the first trying to think what -- -- I was still just one of those things where things just Oakland and go play in in the way that they needed to go. Is gonna be more exciting. I hate to say this because I I feel like it's the Rangers basically. Because I Hendrick Lundqvist I mean I feel like he's at this point in his career a better goalie you basically have the two best goalies going up that it. From this season if you take out like Smith from the equation. I feel like you would be more exciting to see. -- Rangers maybe that's -- -- now that East Coast biased I'm just getting there Albany's what do you think. That that you're looking more upbeat period. -- you want without Clinton I just because. Then they can then double play the game they played aggressive. Fortunate in that push the pace a little bit. You know I think either way if we can just get through these conference finals which in all honesty just not been great to watch. I think we're in for good Stanley Cup match I think which either one of these teams plays the kings as as you outlined right there you have some good matchups. When it comes the whether it's the doubles or whether it's the Rangers to take on the kings but man I gotta say. They always talk about those casual fans which I don't think even exist in hockey. And there always thought about -- what's good for the casual fan what's good for the casual fan not this.
