Tee times are all booked up. Until I'm forty upped the perfect perfect. I'd. A three all by fifty like to join us -- just toss a question now are away we you know we're sports talk station. There was no hockey game last night the pacers got knocked out by the heat on tonight you got doubles Rangers we spent some time talking about that and the playoffs but. Every round of the playoffs every every step of the way to get back to that the transit drive in retro Tuesday in which is really cool idea from them and we lot of feedback on that. We'll get back -- a little bit but Matthew collars here as well on. I wanted to talk to Matthews this week because he put up -- yet another column and -- -- you can just get us into a discussion about Luke Adam. Ville Leino -- boy ace in Derek Roy before guys that did Matthew did features on. On from advanced statistics soul will be warm welcome Matthew and at this point on he's been in the updates and Matthew first off for anybody that hasn't senior pieces on what our advanced statistics when you're looking at the Buffalo Sabres. What to advance statistics show you what can you learn from them while. The one thing that I've tried to look into with the advanced statistics is. What went wrong with certain players what I've done starting off is taken the guys who had. Honestly very bad seasons who in the past have not had bad seasons I guess Luke Adams a little bit of the exception there but Brad -- Billy lane now. Derek Roy and what I attempt to find out through using the events that is what went wrong. Wrong for these guys white bread boys not perform wider Ville Leino under perform massively -- what went. Went wrong with Luke Adam halfway through the season to make his production drop off like a rock. And sell there's a lot of statistics out there that people are just unfamiliar -- Such is you know the concepts like instead of just goals but goals per sixty minutes goals. Five on five for sixty minutes it gives you a better idea of what the guy did he was actually on the ice because obviously you can't score. I'm when -- not all opportunities are created equal and -- seven minutes tonight. Brad -- is giving a lot of quality minutes is not playing with quality you know he's pulling out Brookline that's another statistic that you -- to is how good -- the players that the guy was out on the ice where it. Now this is something that I think will generally lead to discussion about Lindy Ruff. I mean most of these discussions if you're saying the skies and offensively talented player. Derek Roy has had an 81 point season then the year after -- rare left last year you had a terrible season. On the year the year before that though he was. On pace to have another great season leading the -- 35 points in 35 games he was having a great year and one of the things I will I will say about their Korean and no disrespect to you map but I think he's got to exclude this guy out the list. And simple fact is I think. Either people are extremely stupid or they don't understand the injury and this -- had a severe. Knee injury. Not a blown out or Warren ACL and CL. You know from my understanding he -- his patella tendon. And that is not the an injury that the in the news in the State -- New York for workers' compensation people will take twelve months off of work for that in milk it for as much as they can't. In the NHL you come back after four months and -- knee that is probably only 65% healthy because. It is your duty to perform for the fans and for your team. And maybe you get you know and he injured himself while rehabbing. Soul you know one of the things I got to -- able Roy AZ is that. Cut the guy a little bit of slack because of the simple fact that he didn't have your ankle sprain your shoulder rotator cup -- -- patella tendon. And that to me is significant enough most people. Quick scheme quit golfing and he quit. Doing leisure activities this guy came back and played at an elite level. In the National Hockey League and I think people forget that very quickly -- and now because of the salaries and because of lack of production but. You know what -- my friend and I'm sick and tired of people you know absolutely just renaming nine guys when these days don't deserve because they don't have the facts. That's not you Matt. That's just that's just for anybody out there that want to see this guy out here. What are actually no way you know what the statistics. Kind of back up the fact that the sabres should not. Do what a lot of people are calling for which is get rid of them get rid of him the statistics say. That more than likely Roy is all set to bounce back and have a great season next year. Compared -- -- a four million dollar cap and write me at so even if he gets 55 points next year. You just -- paid Brad -- four million forget to get seven goals are what had no offense to Brad -- but. I mean -- he's gonna get to sixty points next -- he doesn't get to sixty points I'll I'll come in the studio and who shall make it all the while while I will take a day off. What's with such a thing about Raleigh also is that you know is five on five production where he would have to do the hardest the money skating. Wasn't that bad it was his power play production that fell off really hard which makes you kind of scratch your head and say was it. His position on the power play was it who he was out on the power play with what would cause a guy who's been so successful for so long. To fall off so hard on the power play where he's scored at a really large amount of his points and it'll. There's a lot of stuff that I can tell you through the statistics but that I can only ask questions about I don't really have an answer for why someone's power play numbers would go consistently year after year actually numbers for sixty minutes on the power play in the drop off. -- give out a phone number quickly because I like I wanna get to the discussion on point 8030550. On Derek Roy's idea. I wonder what the plan is for he is absolutely a popular target. And targets in sports for fans are generally. It's easy to figure out how to make some target how long have you been there a long time Europe target. Many -- archery here -- a top targets after that probably Roy. After that. It's the court right Miller boss dad staffer. Common bill panic. Both of the guys that are gonna come in next then. Who paid taught in that order don't know not necessarily I'm just saying you know ways to make yourself a target one of them is to be around for a long time. In Roy has been here in buffalo his entire career. I don't know whether or not the sabres will trade him. If they do not trade him. There is I think they will ultimately I really do I think that that he will be traded this off season but if they don't. I'll be won its value. There's absolute value in keeping him off in kind much value in a contract year and you -- that let me ask you about this -- in contract years. Stafford had a huge year thirty goals 31 goals and 62 games in his contract year last year fell off a bit but came on strong once he got a good line. When a guy is in a contract year like Roy will be. This does what preparations changed its focus change is it not to say the guys take it detected the the next year off but is it inevitable because. I elevated my game and a contract your got a goal and assess the -- a two year deal you know. But is it real one year for -- point who is a real. The guys focus more. The -- inevitably because you know you know one OK your -- no longer guaranteed yet you know I do I think guys take take time off or take days off CA can't -- -- on the enforces the other day I said. That's 6:30 AM Mondays by the way and forces on -- -- doubles courts had to get that in there. With the legendary robbery. But. You know. The thing about contract years in and guys you know these long term deals and things like that is is it does give. I'm a sense of security. But in the same in the same sense old. You give so much and he. People want. Improvement each year more and more and more everyone. That's the way the world -- you give an inch everyone takes a mile of everybody wants more -- it doesn't matter if you're an athlete. You me everybody just wants more from everybody else and everything and more period. So you know. They want more of these guys and the contract year these guys take. They have a bad year between you sign a six year deal you're not gonna have six great years. Your pro athlete you're you have a -- people have to remember that there are personal life issues that fall in the place for human beings just like anybody else. So. You know sometimes in the middle of a contract guys bull bull you know maybe have a bit of a stretch tough stretch out. Those registered a perfect example is game four for the Rangers -- Otto got beat his grandmother died earlier that that day. Thank you don't always know what's going on yeah Alex Sulzer left the sabres for the game and in Philadelphia because his wife was having a baby prematurely like. You know that stuff on the ice. Yes that affects you it in if it affects you. It affects. Everybody in their job doesn't matter what you do for a living. You know those personal issues always will affect life and your job your career but we're getting off topic here so. Contract years I think I think that. Anybody. Any human being. And I have to come I have to -- compare this to. Every day life and you know people have to put themselves in in and they're in their own you don't look at themselves in the mirror and say well what I do you. You know you're gonna give a little bit more if if there's a look if there's a reward to be had at the end generally mean does that make sense. Sure. I mean if you know. That's that's as you know from where I stand and I mean if the guys making four million the last year of his deal you can bet in July 1 or July 4 and you know in the summertime Hussein himself. -- and have an unbelievable year next year. And I'm gonna I'm you know sign for the for the roof. And there's nothing wrong with that. That's the other thing which you likened to have his career year here in you know but yet and in terms of keeping Derek Roy he's a four million dollar salary cap. His teammates love them. Talk to us about that a lot of people you know once once there's an idea out there. Whether you know it or not it can be picked up on some people might know differently some people might have. Friends inside the organization that actively don't like him but as a teammate as it -- locker room Lindy Ruff took up on said. Derek not a cancer like -- that somebody's good team so I think what. When this comes up about Roy the general thought is sometimes people's in his own direction. He marches to his -- -- a little bit and that's okay you know I mean. You're you're dealing with 25 different personalities -- -- mean I was different the next guy he's different than the next guy no no personnel no two personalities of the same. You know he's he's not a selfish person he's he's actually the exact opposite. And in terms of in the locker room. He's a funny guy he. Just -- going he's he's always positive thinking you know never gets down he's always you know always -- don't worry about this story about that. He's he's got leadership he has a lot of leadership on and I think. I think that you know what what what what holds him back his. Is you know I I think just the fact that. Maybe he's got that outgoing very you know bubbly personality and I think -- you know people might you know. Misunderstand is his sense of humor something I take it for not caring enough and maybe maybe -- -- I don't know I don't know what people to knock is on him. Out there but you know in terms of as a teammate for years I played with the American junior. I've played them in the NHL for five years. Six years maybe five years. And you know. Just one of my best friends and great teammate is my wedding parties so. You know what else can you know that's that's maybe that's not giving a biased opinion I'm being honest when I say everything but. It's. I love the guy and I think you'd be great loss to lose them. 8030550. Matthew your findings you know when you looked into it for Roy is the right play to keep them part I mean obviously depends on what comes back the rights. Played no question to keep them because his shooting percentage was at an all time while I mentioned the power -- stuff. Assuming that -- get figured out with the league to one of the reasons his production was down. Is simply that Roy spends a lot of time on the ice during the power plays well guess what. Power place where did they go all time low power plant are now all time lowest since 1968. Power plays per team per game. So -- strength is on the power play. Where he -- -- shooting percentage -- a long time and the power play opportunities are down. He's partly to blame for that he actually took more penalties -- he drew this year that was the one big thing that stuck out to me that I said. That really has to change and that's all on him I don't know if it's because. He complains too much and he's got a reputation or just things were working out for that for some reason or another but he took more penalties -- he drew. You compare that to a player like Jeff Skinner may be dives I don't know but. He was taking. Three times -- times more penalties or rather drawing four times more penalties -- he was taking and that's a scoring -- same kind of guy so that was the biggest thing but. Getting back to the main point though about whether you should trader right. If he's gonna have a bounce back season which is what all the statistics suggest and what -- suggesting to. Your best play if you really wanna get rid of them you organizations just had enough or if he's had enough which could be possible to. Trade deadline is the time to do it. The stats say that he'll bounce back. He'll do better the stats will go up to get back to closer to appoint a game where he spent his whole career and somebody is really don't want them and really got to pay out big bucks. 8030550. If you Ottawa chime in on this. Your phone call always welcome your comments welcome. The one other thing on this issue and is that Roy was very very open at locker clean out saying that. In -- Lindy is tough on his players. And there are seemed to be a theme a locker cleanup day about -- being too tough on the players and sometimes. I say Al -- oftentimes fans would say shut up grow up. But. The story that the day they got eliminated that he supported them in Boston in that does it some other fans certainly like why. They just gave everything they had got banged up fell short and they certainly -- feel good about it. -- to get into them that today. I think was was highly questionable for -- -- he said calling players out publicly maybe should stay in the room. Fans will often ask about throwing a guy in a locker or org gaining in somebody's face. Your experience. How often does that happen between players. And what about the concept of coaching to art between players between players like players in player. What we would break the idea of the sabres need a guy who's gonna hold people accountable who's gonna throw somebody. It was hit throw somebody into a lock early this -- you mean like a player throwing a player and a lot of solid -- that. They had them that's not good enough they had them Craig remains they had to throw guys are now when he would throw that's he would throw his own stuff and he would hole hit he. You know what the first time that the first meeting we ever had players like with just players he that was the first time. When -- -- that I ever heard. A teammate in a meeting used the word accountability. Holding each other accountable and he went around the room music I might hold you accountable for this and I might do this -- hold me accountable they had to act triggered me it was it was an unbelievable captain. And you know that was a guy that that you wanna talk about a guy that player's perspective. That was him. May still need debt then that they have that -- I don't think you can -- have enough of that. I think you've ever if all 25 guys that I think that would be your team is that much stronger you want that attitude in that that. Makeup in every --
