And our special guest this week LPGA pro Cindy Miller also she plays an -- store price and good morning thanks for coming in. Same same two heavy here it's it's great to -- insidious here because. We are talking women's golf this weaken as you heard at the end of Matthew sportscast there. The wegmans LPGA championship just down the road in Pittsburgh New York -- beautiful locust hill country club. Say every pocket is the leader and minus three. A hosts of golfers just one shot back including Paula Cramer probably the most recognizable name among that group. And a big time tournament out in Rochester. And that will be discussing that a little bit more in depth Kevin Carroll reporter from Lyon and buffalo and Rochester. Who's joined us. Over the course of many years on the show to talk about the LPGA tournament that he covers regularly now give us a little bit more insight on the tournament next segment at 730. That's all free line if you're up on your computer phone this morning and you wanna -- wanna send the message or question this way. Two ways to do it you can send us -- 55550. Or if -- on Twitter send me a thought at Brian PRI and WG. -- okay let's let's -- -- women's golf but let's start at least with what we've seen observations from the LPGA championship. That's and you'll start with you we brought you in here since you played in the -- for those -- that may be listening that. Didn't know that tells about that your experience you tell me before we can on the air this morning you played in the first ever tournament and will itself. I did it is it was called the bankers trust classic I think it was in 1976. Island thing. And I remember making birdie on the first hole and my name was on the leaderboard Iran over my mother in a hurry up and take pictures it could. It may not last and it didn't affect a very cool but it was fun and I've played in five LPGA championship. What is the pressure -- -- of the difference between. The quote -- -- regular events and the LPGA. Championship because this event for a long time was not a major even though. The buzz in the crowds seemed like it but that's kind of what earned it being a major over the right amended the LPGA tour said this is an event that they'd like in the obviously wegmans tell that to its. On the LPGA championship has been a major for quite awhile. On the CNET -- are in Rochester in Rochester yes it just came to register about what five years ago it I want -- thank you we word -- Iraq and Harvey do -- Maryland before this and that's where I played the last line played and I played in 2005. And when you win the LPGA national teaching championship or section championship you get to participate -- PGA championship. And I had won the LPGA national teaching championship in 2004 played temple in Iraq in 2005. And mommy time in a major championship is -- And a. Is there is that pressure that you always hear. You know. Talked about so much so -- can affect golfers is that definitely the case -- you say that I mean. I'm -- so much the pressures that is the course conditions I've played in five US opens and five LPGA championships and I can tell you the rough is really long and the tees are way back and the greens are really fat thin. The last time I play -- turn -- -- my son just kind of looked at me on the tenth hole. And I had a really good drive and they did how you know the yardage for how far you hit the ball and I killed his tee shot that went to forty. And the girl us playing with just bombed -- climbing to seventy and Jamie just looked at me does he need to give this stuff. Think you're raising or anything has Greek getting in Panama but -- -- Tim you were you're out Rochester yesterday. Went Thursday but Thursday I was of -- the rough -- definitely challenge. For anyone now globally so followed a couple of groups -- groups and McMichael had a great time some players -- on. -- they got the star power you know especially in the leaderboard this week so it looks like some nice -- this weekend it should be two BC approximately mean Paula Cramer moments and the -- it should be it should be exciting for the weather. Gives you a dodge a bullet here yeah we we file and agree group it was Johnny saying Stacy Lewis. And now Paula Cramer and they were just smile on the whole time balancing act whose struggle movement. And -- enough cholera and days that the girls seem much more approachable and consider real personable real personable -- now have. Twitter handles on the Kennedy's -- Pretty accusing everyone of them has this. This handle which I've been using too much but apparently it's worked pretty ago. I think that I was reading about that that Twitter handle on the on the caddie that they're really trying to promotes. Players and personalities. So much so on the LPGA sites and LSU first you would be the best and notice this. Does the LPGA do a good enough job promoting its players. I think they're trying to do the best they can -- and definitely the players are much more approachable. They have meetings with the players and teaching them you know media. Communication skills type stuff and I know they -- an example on my LPGA little girls golf club. One into the tournament Tuesday and enough followed Morgan Russell. And she invited her in on you know inside the ropes and the letter -- a couple pots. Which is really pretty cool I mean that I'm gonna happen on an historic and Cahill had a great time because she was able to. -- -- in and she's a golfer for life you know approach made it oh absolutely yeah she's huge fan and now she's gonna wanna play golf and the like Morgan pretzel and she's got someone to follow and enemies gulf former -- for -- that's for sure. Well we're gonna I've got like thirty or forty little girls going over today. The LPGA girls golf club of buffalo and they all have these shirts and it's -- that we all have to have the same -- as we look really cute and everybody's gonna come up and talk to us and that's what happens and they get their hats signed a golf ball signed it's just a great time cards. And a pock. I know you you mentioned it a name. Of recognition especially in Rochester remember covering the tournament from my college days. I'm more than a decade ago and that was when she went on that great run so she knows this course really well she does he does the plus they have the LPGA. Rochester. You know it's -- a lot of different names yet for it was a major. It the girls have been here a long time in 1976. So one player last weekend I don't we were we were speaking. And talking about just what the preparations were from locust -- angle. I wanted I passed last week about Nancy Lopez's influence on this tournament and and the rise of it and I wanted to -- your thoughts on her because I know. During the eighty's and ninety's and things like that that she was she she drew the the biggest galleries out around. She's great she's just such a fabulous ambassador for the sport in the game. And she still comes up to the tournament each year on she's now playing with me on the legends tour. We've got to determine a couple weeks but yet Nancy is awesome she's just a great ambassador patty Sheehan was here pat Bradley was here -- the older players. 7-Eleven is the time here WGR golf show rankles deal with you along with LPGA pro Cindy Miller city has played. Locust hill and in this tournament also in some LPGA championship so great perspective this morning on. Women's golf all we're talking about Jeff -- and Tim Friesen transit valley also witness here you gotta questioner common 803055188. 550 to 550. Is the number and are you got a tweet in -- and you'll to take this compare this is locust -- difficulty. As tough as some of the other courses that they play. Via that are tougher because the greens in the rough it's amazing and they've moved the tees I mean. We were there Wednesday and my son play in the pro am and some of the tees are most like cool I'm so Clinton play and here I need to play it up. Yeah it's really long it's tight it's hard the greens are fast it's yeah it's difficult. For those that listen this morning may be that are heading out this weekend to watch. Where would they go what are some of the -- you think that are some some cool spots to watch maybe where there's an opportunity for some scoring or even some blow up sometimes that's to all but lost it then watched. Over six. Five -- a par three up the hill -- see some three putts there. So there's a spot on six green where you can see 67. And eight which is a great spot here. And you can also be on. Eleven you can watch at eleven green you can watch twelfth tee and sixteen and seventeen. -- -- -- -- In they've got all of the elements there is there it's a beautiful golf course com it's it would review for -- do you -- There's a lot of spots up on the road it's kind of like sporting event or any you know park in people's yards and there's also transportation and shuttle service from and it schooled on the road. So it's. -- the pretty accessible via and the great park for -- on Jefferson and just like Cindy said it was written some. People's law lawns and it's just you know quarter mile by paparazzi five -- right in it's it's two minutes opera before and anger it's not a it's not our -- 393 and their enormous and Maria. You're gonna have gone wrong way to I'm not that but I go in there. That's the state I asked you about the the players being promoted itself the two worst health. And at times we know that over the -- past couple years events have been in trouble because of sponsorship and things like that do you think it's it's heading back in the right direct absolutely. Absolutely. Commissioner Mike Weiner is amazing he does a great job promoting the tour he's very business minded. He's hired to calm a lot of people from. The PGA tour so he's definitely doing the right thing and that tours going in or traction. I think one of the things that I would say some people would say maybe. Not lesson the hard core golf fans but just the average sports fan at that likes golf. Is that they may say well there's there's not as many recognizable names on the tour as maybe there could be an all say this solely for maybe the US side. A lot of them are foreign players and even some of them they say will have trouble maybe even conveying. Oh with their English and things like got to know that remember was that about a year or two will go. They came out with an -- tell me if I'm wrong if it's still rule that they sent their mandating that they speak English and all that. Now what's the latest with that. -- you know if they change their rules that. Still I don't know fifteen that -- but I think it's a good rule to have. It's funny because. Now that the Olympics is gonna have golf and it. I believe that the United States needs to do something about helping. Junior players have more accessibility and people that may not be members' private clubs. Hence we have the LPGA girls golf club to help young people learn how to play this game. We need to do a better job at helping our young people have access to learn how to play and compete. My friend of mine affect her husband -- for Christie Kerr -- black wilder forces there as the caddy. And they have a daughter Mallory who plays. On tour it's kind of like they're the second -- family we of course with the first of -- it ours -- they are having I think it's called America's golf team and we're really trying to do have a push to help young players learn how to play better. In other countries their country pays for junior golf and all the amateur golf tournaments so. Example our son Jamie went to Augusta State and half the golf team was from. Sweden Scotland South Africa and those countries Australia pay for the country's team to go compete. Whereas in the United States all the parents have to pay for themselves so I think you know. We need to do -- about that so that we have better. Players the last time Americans. Was a leading money winner on the LPGA tour was 1994. And was and while. So it's. Okay and almost twenty years while silicon national development program -- and Australia they'll have a -- death via -- I know the PGA has this give a big push right now on and off the LPGA does to -- to develop new golfers you know we lost a bunch of golfers in this downturn -- it then there are a lot of barriers for people to get caught playing golf especially young women. If you're young woman I mean coming your friends are playing golf how many exactly the thing you're doing is great how to kids find out about some like Richard. Go to LPGA dot com go to my website Cindy Miller golf Google LPGA girls golf the other thing is get golf ready you know I -- a program at the world golf -- For people learn how to play golf and have fun and have a feel little less expensive. The challenges of NB a girl that's growing up -- wanting to play either as many opportunities that you'd like is I mean even high school teams. How many schools in the area. I'm out of that and there's more than there used to be plays I have a girl that plays a frontier Mollie -- -- is on the golf team at frontier. The chairman -- and yes she is available now she's sixty tall and she hits it to fifty. You know so I have another young girl who tried to qualify for the golf team and couldn't make because she's not six feet on the news to fifty now. It's just really -- you know vs of their first school. For pro for a girl at a school wants the play is it. Is it the fact that -- got to be good enough to make the voicing if there's not a girls team. Oh and she used to play from the nineties. I'll cut so I mean I even said I'll help who let me coach a girls team letter at this Roland. Because as an awful lot of scholarships in fact the legends tour Rosie jones' attorney McCall the Judson invitational. I'm playing in July. And we have collegiate players playing with legends tour players. And we're having trouble finding enough women collegiate tour player collegiate players to partner with us -- Sobel ASCII. Who happens to be from hair goes to Vanderbilt plays on the golf team and she's gonna play with me in the -- which is really pretty -- miserable from buffalo. She's -- -- hands and nice. -- good player great it's good to see the girls come up and playing well I have two daughters I wish they played more but -- said it's it's harder for the girls to get an entry into the game so you can find a program like this lakers. Or -- gulf ready we have a couple of the club that's a great program really -- -- lessons I mean I'm -- that. He c'mon you learn the basics and you'll learn how to be given the cores and how to get out there what to Wear what the clubs do. Everything in day be your kid out there looking player paralympic. Call your cube when these programs going and and try to see the game -- go take your kid to see determined this weekend and -- a -- It's free it's kids under sixteen are free and at the LPGA and it outrageous but an LPGA tour. It's a great idea to get get the youngsters involved and going your daughters to mean today. They talked about women's golf I mean I know that. I hear boys and their high school age middle school -- that. Can tell you a lot of things about Tiger Woods but didn't due to your daughters talk about women's golf players and and is that still the lack of -- maybe they US dominant player that that also could maybe help grow at a little more. I think they're more aware of a person like Paula -- because she dresses while they like her clothes she's a lot of fun but if they turn it on that's not they don't see a lot of her and not their friends are playing as much everyone that's kind of interest -- one that isn't it seems as the girls get older you kind of lose them around fifteen or fourteen even if they played all along. These -- of other interest and we need to find a way to keep coming the golf course increase. -- ease of access form and ways for them to get on the golf course market with a great place for kids to be mean if you. He had a teenager growing sticker on a golf course for the -- a good spot for her to be our. It's safe it's it's good at that titlist performance institute I've TPI certified. And they did a survey of 500 kids in San Diego and they said you know each kid under thirteen has one choice a week we want to do after school. And they asked them you know what he wanted to afterschool golf wasn't mentioned because it's not fun. Typically right and I'm kind of goofy and I make it fun and in a parent -- wireless music -- because it's. More fun they're gonna get the ball in the air right I don't care how it hold it just whack away and let's have some fun -- keep your head up keep your arms to do list and you said that before tip to. Now early and figuring out that way to suck him in just taken my daughter and -- she took a friend would never seen a golf tournament let alone win this tournament. Well these two can't stop talking about it so just by bringing them there they were completely influenced and that's all she's been talking that was so cool -- -- these are definitely some more. Is it maybe and sending email that it's gotta be foreign and -- own and emptied out the item thrown out of the bar -- that you can look at -- sneakers. So words of alternate -- performance institute junior academy -- how to get kids to have fun and and what they teach him to do is throw skipped -- catch. All that stuff when I. The reason I wanted to turn pro as my mom her friends took me to an LPGA turned medic Grand Island at river oaks. Mark equity classic in 1973. And that dream was developed I was like -- that's what I'm gonna do on the -- or bombing have a picnic. Golf bag when my name on it and brand new shoes. Are stupid but you know that's what happens. I want pernicious -- that's I think that's that's a lot of people's treatment and issues. I 721 let's get to an update here from Matthew 8030550. Is the number -- good discussion here on women's golf. LPGA pro Cindy Miller sure many of you in the golf community recognize her name and her expertise from -- playing time. And more on women's golf and I -- -- what she thinks about Michelle -- And just if she's doing everything right for the game she's not playing well. At the LPGA in Rochester this week and -- update -- where she's at a leaderboard Kevin Carroll from wine and he's covering the tournament. -- will get a couple of thoughts from him coming up next that went to US open men's preview coming up at about 7:15 this morning. Back with more of the gulf shall right after this on WGR. LPGA championship leader say every pot there talking about her injury that is. Brought her back much more quicker than expected she leads in Rochester and play actually is under way. Kevin Carroll from wind and to join us here just a minute tell give us the reason why but the leaders including pock teeing off this morning and three cents from locust hill. At 9 AM this morning welcome back to our golf -- here at 729 Brian called deal with you along with. Local PGA pros Jeff -- isn't him freeze and our special guest this week LPGA pro Cindy Miller Cyndi played in the first ever event at locust hill. In Rochester as well as some LPGA championships and given us some good insight this morning. On women's golf. And pox injury was one that said that she was not gonna come back for quite some time in and that's that that's really. A big boost to determine. But another name I really wanna ask you about probably maybe the most. Correct me if I'm wrong the most well known women's name. Is Michelle Wie and she herself not playing well this weekend. Seven over par at last check yesterday -- -- she ended up finishing up that but let's talk about we yourself. Years ago came on was going to be the biggest thing in golf. And was getting just as much -- is Tiger Woods when she just came out right away the very and I was playing in men's events got some. Big sponsors and TV thing deals to play. And it's been a roller coaster ride for her. I. The last time I played -- PGA championship I was stands tenth -- wait for friend that I mean tee time with and Michelle -- comes walking up with mom and dad and her forever by earth. And Jamie was gonna -- forming what can informing him he goes -- let's go play with her and I'm like now play -- And and she just went right ahead of us to -- promises person that I would play golf with them. And I was it was the first time I had seen other than tiger the entourage. You know with the players. And it. Wherever she is mom and better right behind her still -- again and and it's funny because the twenties and I wanna say Solheim copper to one need 2009. When Beth Daniel as team captain she made it known or parents you're not allowed anywhere near her. She's insecure seclusion and how cheaply like it and she played great. So it's just the poor girl in my opinion has not been able to have a real life you know and she's been pushed and pushed and pushed and I think it's just you've seen the fruits of the. The fun of the teenage years pretty much gone way over there she ended up filing yesterday I so she's seven over -- around. At a shooting 82. Plus twelve and is not playing this weekend which. Again regardless of what we think about her game. At the blow on the fact that. There is definitely women and girls that we wanna Kosier. -- she'd be a huge trial anywhere he has. He in its history she still very young I mean she was playing when she was sixteen in these events so exactly began she's still young woman to -- she's gone back to get your degree they're right she's working on her degree at Stanford still and -- trying to play this tour for which I mean you know how much can you put on someone who's 20/20 one years old -- Alessio Alexi does like he's only sixteen with two counts and -- -- usually he's been playing well. Yeah it should we Mehmet -- down in Florida what a nice young lady she seems endless -- really well she didn't seem flustered by all the attention or anything -- -- -- from being sixteen yankees that was really really impressed with the border -- for her tour brother. Right Nicholas Elena nationwide and PGA tour user one aside at. Pat -- -- trying to pick whether planned on the -- -- -- from the same THI for the same team. It happens on the game. -- let's bring in Kevin Carroll from one and end Kevin's been. Joining us here kind of an annual thing he covers the LPG -- in Rochester every year and you can see him now wine and buffalo NY and Rochester covering the event Kevin good morning. Hey Brian are you doing today. Great thanks for coming on and I know you got an early earlier starts they write the the golf thirty started correct. Yes they got under way at seven they're expecting bet whether off and on today. The key -- starting at seven go to Mac and thirteen not that one intend. On he's one and and what they still expect to wrapped things up at 830 later tonight though it's expected to be a long day out here -- At that well and probably for you to tell me a little bit about. What you've taken it in and covered so far and we've we've mentioned of course that's every pockets back. And she was a story from this tournament Rochester even before it. Turned to the LPGA championship to the major status she's definitely won here before so she's had success at locust hill. Yeah and she injured her shoulder in it was funny she wasn't even expected to play this year. Out there and it's either move up the leaderboard yesterday. Kind of took of you -- by surprise because. She was basically just testing -- her shoulder and yet here she is sitting atop the leaderboard going into the weekend. So a bit of a surprise there but I mean not a real surprise but the fact that she was injured. When they're really expected to play out there. Surprisingly there. How do you think the the conditions are out there Kevin I mean we knew we see that the score is in years past some -- double digits under par. Depending upon what the weather does maybe that'll change but right now it's playing pretty difficult. -- you know actually. A lot of what we're making it up for courts a lot of golfers were saying that. The court locust hill though it placed but. Paula Cramer said that it's the topic she's never seen that. I'm talking a lot yesterday at least about the fact that a lot of the pins were placed on the front of the green and so. You know you wanted to get the ba oh. Up in front but it would really hard to do in you know Yani and who won at nineteen under last year. Is sitting at plus seven in just made the cut. So acute still out cup -- playing basically you have to hit the fairway and you have to agree. Kevin Carroll from wine and buffalo and Rochester joining us here covering the LPGA championship -- locust hill and Rochester. Kevin about a little bit more on Kramer's. Week so far a seven DN a 72 yesterday minus two she's one shot back and the top American. On the board. I'm sure that she'll be getting large galleries today and you know for those involved in the -- and I'm sure they'd love to see her competing -- with a chance to win at the end. Yeah -- the -- papers and you know she's one shot back. Going into today it was slate she'll be -- not. 8:50 this morning. So she's sort of a lot follow words I think last year and not a 100% sure he would. Close going into the weekend and 20. And then click Lisa -- center all the way into extra crop from everybody else but sure it it's. It's good to see her up near the front going into the weekend should be interest rates. He do you think he had the rain might soften it up and get the scores down a little or is it is it the firm greens that are -- under the rock for -- will give more difficult with the F thicker rough with a little bit Graham what do you -- your thoughts on that. The rough is super difficult I know. When we had media event out there a couple of weeks ago. They let us play the court -- there in the greens were super hard to read in some album you know after -- it's been so hot though. This spring and putting on some of those greens like putting on your kitchen floor. So it is with China are that so yeah I mean -- from rain out there might stop make it a little bit easier but. From what I've seen the greens have been really really tough. But it is always the rough out there you get into that that that struck get maps. So they're scheduled to finish at 830. Is that with earlier Carswell. It's old too but I think because of the weather they were talking -- although they're starting early this morning. They're not planning on finishing violate the middle of the afternoon today they expect. Whether it's -- -- a couple of delays throughout the day. Kevin one or two more things some big names. Won't be playing the weekend Tiger Woods is -- right Cheyenne woods plus ten she missed the cut and then now we also earlier mentioned maybe all your hold you heard us. Michelle -- not gonna play the weekend. Yeah sure it would be indirectly your second time playing out there I think played a few years back. It's an amateur she got a sponsor's exemption but you know it up out there you know she had people following earned. You know I'm sure a lot of people were hoping she'd make -- cut and played a weakened but she's got and we show we just. -- if you feel so good -- call time out there. I I think I heard the tail end of the conversation when I came on the line earlier the end. I know she does have a lot of fans who -- -- earlier who work you know waiting her which she finishes up for a couple of days of once again -- Not going to be there on the weekend and -- -- you seem quite -- to incur. Happy new year after year for show and she comes out here. I Kevin who's gonna win -- will put you on the spot here ten seconds give me a name. We've got away at the child the way it's going out there right now in the late like we said earlier would be nice to see Paula Korea were -- and I know like. You'll have a lot of followers out there. Series it would be interesting received she -- on. Because. Of the fact that she wasn't even expected to play out here so. Let's say it's it was a gambling man. I don't follow Kremer Woolsey if she does. Kevin is with this of course is -- is on one and then. They have around the clock coverage twice and our throughout the weekend so if you're looking for a highlights and updates and sound from the players that check -- out -- Kevin thanks so much appreciated as always. Well I'm not yeah I was out of locust hill yesterday and toward the end of the day I was walking up toward the the tenth green it's a nice place that the kind of watched as you can see the whole whole progress. And Al's got a eyeball. I was just you know walked up cart path and I hear push right by my ears. Golf balls drive an errant drive. It went by me hit the cart path. And it hit a guy. Standing like right next to me and -- you know when the ball it bounced and then hit him he -- one of those things that looks like like a slap fight added. The way he waved at it in kind of batted it away by accident but. That was -- near that near death experience yesterday as it was colts probably covering all violence there and yes so right there was yet -- -- health. And he he like looked around and then just walk the ways that's the good. Like you don't wanna wait maybe Gibbons signed blog or something but. -- yes I was almost killed yesterday at a great time out there and that it is a dangerous game. You said.
