Hi everybody good morning I am Mike show opened this is the hobby on WGR. Another. Saturday morning another no hitter. To work talk about and yup I've missed last nights too although. C'mon so did you. LA at Seattle the LA Dodgers at Seattle. You think. Is that the best -- you think of Cy Young -- who came to mind the old timers ever envision a no hitter by six pitchers. For the Mariners against the Dodgers are a few in a few ways that. The idea kind of doesn't make sense. From a collector standpoint. We've we've talked about and I I love ideas like this. -- when you go into collecting or even if you've been into a long time and you start out. With a new idea you don't have to collect a set it's been. You know prearranged. Hey -- just gonna collect the 2012. Topps baseball set that wanna start collecting. You don't you're not limited like that because of the Internet you can you know by whatever is out there you can go to 1912. If you'd rather and you also have to just stay with a certain set you can collects. Men that if hit 500 home runs autographed balls rookie cards any thing. And one idea that I kind of like it actually thought about it for myself with tickets in mind mystic if -- take a lot of space. Is no hitters but in terms of the ball they wanted to collect an autographed baseball. From his many pitchers as have thrown a no hitter. What do you do about combined no hitters what do you do about games like last night it's not -- combined it is six guys. And I'm pretty sure at least three of the time you've never heard of so. What other. -- I say. It doesn't count unless every name is on there I think if you wanna collect and no hitter ball from that game you -- all six names that sound extremely difficult. To get all six some analysts they'd do some special things -- -- -- and today. I think that if I want to to accomplish that on the same ball would be extremely difficult. Yeah well it might be I mean if you're at if you're at their game today. And you set out to do that. Maybe it's possibly Millwood I don't know who signs were doesn't -- Millwood wouldn't pitch or you'd have a chance at him probably and the relievers some of those relievers going to be like. Sure. They've they've there closer. Tom will Helms and -- reading from Jim Capel was a bartender three years ago. Just that this is the Mariners. Didn't even realize. At first and the catcher Montero former Yankee catcher Montero. Jumped into his arms and like -- we did it. And the pitcher -- what. That's it for her. Brendan Ryan the shortstop made a nice play were you watching yeah I watch a game. You -- Ryan makes a nice place I mean how nice sincere very nice polite like plus plus politely. Only the top shortstop in baseball make it on the wrong and charged the ball bearing -- throughout the Gordon which is off today. He's not only battling a left handed not only probably the quickest but he also bails out. Like he's halfway down the first baseline -- -- it's -- it was very close but you know. I was actually watching the Dodgers broadcast -- got in the -- TV and you know they were like oh he looks if you -- safe. I thought it was bang bang we could've been altered could've gone either way. Oh yet. That's right the agency had no replay. Wouldn't it reversed no replay it would not it reversed -- it was that close it was no Carl's -- although I did make it curls Beltre -- Okay well I love votes. Yeah a -- of your favorite that's why I'm on Brendan Ryan didn't realize it was it was a no hitter until a few seconds later. And he makes the play in the ninth inning for the first out of the ninth inning. He didn't realize of the year I think that shows you how little players pay attention when not playing because render Ryan came in off the bench as a defensive replacement and will homes and he was problems sleeping in the open for the percent and and. You hit -- you had a better chance of knowing it was a no hitter if you had paid attention throughout the game. Yeah that's probably true sort of way that happened in Seattle last night the winning pitcher Stephen. Breyer. Came on here we have Kevin Millwood started it which is. Odd enough Millwood to -- in the last five years of Millwood is with -- still doing pitching but he has the occasional really good game. And last night he went six I did see this they were showing highlights only part of the broadcast that watched. So he pitches six innings another guy come comes on aimed for a bush. He gets two outs they go to this Stephen Breyer who was in the minors like two weeks ago. That's why you want if you want to go after this ball then you don't. People collect. Baseball's of pitchers who throw no hitters while the combined would you do for the Astros game if you're such a person. Nine years ago -- the Astros had I think also six pitchers. At Yankee Stadium in 2003. So Pryor comes in he strikes out whoever to end the top of the seventh the game -- 00. The Mariners get a run in the bottom of the seventh start the day prior was now the pitcher of record. Two walks. And comes out so this is his first Major League win. He faced three batters he walked two of them. And it was a no hitter. Would anybody else Matthew in baseball history have a no hitter for their first Major League win. Would you bet against that I would bet against it I. But I mean be involved in a no hitter thrown -- don't -- his but his first Major League win was a no hitter was an -- That he faced three batters and walked two of them. You know would be even more odd is if you won the game for your first Major League win and it was a no hitter by the other team which -- still want it -- that could happen. That could happen to. By say it again what was -- You would win the game for your first Major League win and it was a no hitter. But it was the Notre Dame got a no hitter was by the other team and yet still won I mean they could've scored runs last night they had runners on the Dodgers had runners on second and third without getting in the -- yeah that almost sounds what you just described almost sounds more. Believable than this. But more and all of us do. Don Mattingly with a man on first and second after prior walks that the two guys in a row has his -- bunt he's only got six left. Outs left the work with -- he has James Loney whose kind of a line drive hitter. It's not really a power hitter but. He -- a month but how how many managers out of thirty managers were on the same thing I say thirty. I don't think Joseph Maddon would have you don't it's one thing. Not a big down Iran. -- if they were because they wanna tell your news coverage and care about the no hitter they're right in the course of the game tied Madden. He's he's -- Saber metrics friendly blunt needing to do that he's always the the rays are always dead last week and months if it's a different hitter. Maybe that it's thirty out of thirty maybe not with that theater at -- Omar Vizquel. You know. Year old bunting if it's if it's James Loney is an interest in one you don't have to -- James Loney and of the -- Mark Teixeira. Now in the situation. You know or any situation or any situation but. Yeah well okay probably not I think you're right thirty thirty guys on there but a lot of them do. Well that happened last night very late I checked it out at about five minutes after 12 this morning and it was the top the bottom of the seventh. So in Seattle six pitchers no hitter interleague. Tom will Helms and closes it Stephen -- wins it and yes according to this show. If you want to claim the autographed ball from this no -- you need all six of those names on -- ball. And it would be possible that there would be some promoter out there. There would -- show. Were a card show where you can get all all all six of those guys is there a somebody just -- -- wanna do it. I mean that's the kind of thing that somebody on the other side of the fence that somebody in the the memorabilia industry has already thought of and may be put into motion. I remember the Rochester red wings did this last year they had a combined no hitter I think they know hit someone and I think that they've. Signed a bunch of baseballs and gave away in some charity thing -- like all the guys who are involved no hitters -- they could have had I mean the players themselves could have signed balls for each other last night. One more quick thing what do you do with the ball that ended the game. One of the pictures says it was will homes on the closer in the gym people article I read it espn.com is quoted as. I don't know the protocol -- that -- I keep it. Two I give it to Millwood. Two I give it to the team does it belong in the clubhouse -- -- -- space. What should they do with that baseball. Six guys shared in the no -- the winning pitcher doesn't seem deserving. I think you just put in the clubhouse somewhere. I guess so. -- a lot of people today. Who cares. But I'm not tech guy. You know -- don't care if you do its interest in one and yeah I don't know that one pitcher deserves it anymore than any other. Speaking of baseball. I'm having a tough time this week. Hearing about. Idols of -- call them that of mine as a child watching baseball. -- and their ages Dave Parker turned 61 today the cobra. And that is I can even like get my arms around. Because Dave Parker. There's no because we -- Parker was. Good if not great. When I was first watching baseball the first -- spoiler member is about 1979. I think I remember the Bucky -- game in 78. -- it. I'm you know how it is like you might I might not I think I do I might not 79 though. -- have a memory of watching the all star game the famous 1979 all star game at the Kingdome in Seattle. From my grandmother's house and not being able to stay operable I was seven years old. So it seems like I I could remember that it just easy to say that I do but. This is how I am -- to really know if I do so. Dave Parker. Throwing out Brian downing Kinect game is one of the most famous I think this is right I think it's the most famous the rose in the history of baseball. Is Parker road -- in that game 61 years old and I'm just thinking myself what does he look like at 61 -- mean Dave Parker. 61 years old. I don't know and the other one this week was Thurman Munson. -- -- -- -- This isn't quite the right word for almost creepy your enemy Munson who of course died in 79 by the way right around like maybe a couple weeks after that game. He will turn 65 this week. And you know sort of be like this is -- -- weakened by. People who die young you don't know what they what they look like his old people like you just wonder I mean their -- and its 65 I can't. You know you just sort of have to okay move on but I -- I didn't do that -- I stopped at that. That that place for a few minutes. Earlier this week in tried I thought about months and if you follow the hobby on Twitter the hobby WGR the picture behind. The words that the wallpaper. Is of the famous 1971. Months and card. Card number five I believe it is from the from the great 1971 Topps baseball set. It's my card it's a PSA five I think five or six. And this is such a great -- one of the best cars ever made the picture they just in 71 they were just starting. To use. Action shots finally. And there are some great. Pictures in that -- months and in a collision at home plate dust flying up at Yankee Stadium. In 71. It's a classic. But it's not his rookie there's the tops all star rookie. -- whatever it is then. On the card that picture of people. Confuse it for his rookie card but it is not. His rookie is the seventy. Tops and there's nothing. Aesthetically. Impressive about it. It's months and and a teammate yankees rookies you know those cards of the multiple players on it. As the little picture of his face so there's not much going on there but that's the rookie the 71 card though. If you're getting in the high grade that's even like for currently this PSA eight. Then you are looking at a lot of money in the nines on that seven he won their out there but they are mad they are crazy expensive. So yeah Thurman Munson would've been a 65 this week. Okay. I've been talking for a long time here. Joseph Orlando is coming on today if you remember the early days of the show you'll remember Joe's name was on a few times with me in the first couple of years it is a new show so we. I guess are still in those early days but on a -- about it. Joseph is the president of PSA he's been very kind to me and to the show for coming on a few times including on Saturdays when he's gonna Paulus. At what's going to be like five point 5 in the morning where he is in Southern California. And talk to -- for a few reasons to try to hit as many topics we -- him about the twelve minutes will have. One is this new venture. Of PSAs called collectible fact I think what is it wants to do. Is have it be the website for everything related to -- collecting. I think that's what they wanna do. And as far as I'm concerned as a collector they are off to a good start with the registry what they have already. Or watch lists. One latest features where you can and post what you're looking for or or what you're looking to cells are trying to do a little bit. Well with each day as it also little bit of what a website called vintage car prices dot com does. VCP is note is very useful. To collectors comes at a high membership fees. But it's still very useful at all kinds are reported sales of like every car that goes back at least 220 years. And it's not every sale but it's almost it's it's every cargo including the you know the jello cards and tip top breads and all those and you know bull. Sidebar. Sets that came out on the boxes of food. In the you know the 40s50s and sixties in through the eighties against everything. So it sounds like PSA wants to tap into that too. All talk to Joseph about that also urges the state of the hobby or talk to him very often needs a big players so. To stow was wanna get an overview from -- often -- very bullish. On collecting we talked a couple times during the the worst times of the recession. In -- way in 09. And his his overriding point was always. People love this stuff too much. It's not like buying a stock or mutual fund there's something more sentimental about it. So he always. Was supportive and and would defend. Collecting in you know I would understand why he would do that but I like hearing it. That I made some reference to how collectors seem to just the always meant only meant. And it's funny like I was thinking about that for today talking about you know -- how many women are collectors and a wireless it was about Carrie Underwood. American Idol cards. Of Carrie Underwood from when she was on the show and even a few other cards of birds that have been produced since then I was thinking YE. Why but who collects Carrie Underwood is it these -- guys like me that just you know. Did you show or her something or might it be women but I've met so few women. Who work -- collectors in my life may be like only two. And I'm always hearing about. The moisture -- from men. Whose wives or girlfriends play some important role some key role in. Like what. -- -- direction they go in with their collection or anything like that. But you -- wives who would love the husbands to sell everything. -- wives who actually get into it in -- interest thing -- wives were very protective of their husbands and wanna make sure that whatever deal happened is a good deal so you -- When I don't often the -- or women who collect themselves. I mean there are women who collect. Earlier Whitman to collect cards. -- other women who collect other things that we all can be -- But just I was thinking about that earlier this week. And I I think I might have just gotten an email from a woman a collector but I haven't am I haven't looked this is where incidents. But you know if you know anybody if you are up uncle collector and a woman you know. Anybody who is you wanna tell me -- -- I am. He works in your home your wife or girlfriend whatever just what kind of role they play. In my case. My wife plays to very important roles in my collecting one is. That she is kind of the the overseer she's the curator. In a sense of the collection -- Joseph Mathieu. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Whether something you know from buying it for the right reasons I mean there are things that I won't be in a big hurry to to tell her about. But you know she plays a key role and I indictment that readily she plays a key role in determining. Sort of the direction of things sometimes. So there's that and then there's also of course the the other thing which is well how much money do you have. Sort of keeping me from getting or trying to carried away with my idea expenses and that's been a problem for me before. But them. It's it's almost like an unspoken rule. It's not like a sit down at a desk and in front of her and she shows me the the books thank goodness it hasn't come to that although who knows it won't Sunday. But it's gorgeous she's out there she knows what the the dealers. And -- I know that there are limits. So I was not thinking about that -- give a comment on that I would and be happy people that we could talk about 8030550. What not to stereotype that caller. And be sexist or anything like that I hope this isn't bad just a matter of factly. What. To what extent are women involved in the hobby given -- very few. Even Monday through Friday doing that the show with Bulldog it's as as sports is it is and what the station and it is and everything I meet many. Female listeners to the show but that's what's the cart thing. So there's that eagle 30550. Is the number wasn't expecting to have. This segment opened as there was open aperture oh. I always check with him to elect -- -- relies s.'s. Very very early on -- Saturday. Where you are but time of for the first time I guess we haven't been able to connect with them hopefully we will before too long. Oval instead of having Joseph on. Think of maybe what I could sit back here a little bit the -- of I've been doing that's often what I'll be talking about in the show and it wasn't planning on having this extra time. Would've -- been doing in the collecting well. I may have told this to you were mentioned this last couple of weeks of the don't think this is anything that new. But I've just had lately a very tough time. Getting off my -- with seller. It's. A tedious job. As many of view. No and as some of you have talked about with me. People sometimes economy and they'll say okay this is one I've got. I've got a book I know what to do eBay and that this is what I think it's worth now how to -- got it. It is a very tedious thing. Going through and listening and enlisting card's taking the pictures are scanning them right in the descriptions. Getting all the details right it's important at the mall right. How will you ship it how much will cost -- shipped to Asia all the different aspects of it it can be. Laborious. So. It especially when you're a collection like mine which has just been many years in the making and and many of you do. A lot of people stopped collecting but have. Collections from from a long time ago I wanna know how to sell them and meet people like that almost once a week. So why am I just lately had a very tough time getting going. And there's just no other way around it I could dump all this stuff. Not all my collection but say that a portion of it that I consider. Expendable. Redundant. I could just dump it and make a terrible deal for myself but the -- with it. What you wanna do I think is put a price on your time. What my father always encouraged me to do with with anything. What when you when you're considering whether something is worth investing in or doing. Put a price on your time you want a make something verses buying it all right -- making it is. In a sense better but how much did the materials costs after all that how much time will that take you. And put a number on that what is your time worth. And the best way to do that necessarily mean you want to. Compare that number with how much you make per hour like is that what your time is worth or is it a different number. On the weekend I don't exactly know but. -- -- The core of it the sense makes cents to two wanna do that. And I'm telling you with this eBay. It just takes forever. To do it right and to do poorly can take and take awhile depending on how much you have. But other -- what are -- supposed to do. You can you can run these boxes. To a dealer. And be prepared to. Tell them what you think. It what you want for that box and if it's a number that works for them you can be done just like that. That's a possibility. Or. You know what. A card show taken to a card show and basically do the same thing. Want them around open to the seller there -- to make them by which does happen all the time. But you know if people want the most money. They can get this is. The way to go you're really wanna do that on your own. And it's just this is quite an undertaking. So that's the thing that's like the most common thought I'd been having in collecting lately is just how long. It is it is going to take an interest I'm done in by that I'm overwhelmed by. And really what do probably wanna do is just take little little pieces of it do it. A little by little and just get to a point where I've got some momentum and things are starting to fly out the door. But some seriously like I ought to take a year old -- work. And stressed that if that because of equipment that the planned but take if I had like a long vacation. I shall probably wouldn't do it but that's the commitment the commitment and need to do. And really if you're out there in this. Sounds like you -- white sell all this stuff the best way you can do it this is just very hard but the best way you can do it. Is to find somebody. That isn't it dealer but that is a collector that once everything. I met a guy this week who had this old collections you know fifties and sixties when I say old it's usually what I mean they become older than that but. That's to me and old collection fifties and sixties cards. And he. He wanted to sell bomb the he put an ad online. And and people have been visiting him in. It's been going on for months. And like he's got his idea of what it's worth and of course he could. Go under that. And and sell it all and be done. But you know is trying to get a decent price forward all of I don't mr. little blame him for that. So -- -- You know people come by I did this I -- I went by and and visited with them and took a look. And eventually just didn't see it. Being worth my while this collection is probably like many many others that are sitting in boxes. In addicts in basements all over Western New York in all over the United States. Which is just stuff that was -- Well handle you know it's it's the condition isn't very good and the as such. The return on these cards wouldn't be very good. So what am it's just tough because. You've got boxes and boxes. And it might be worth if you were to be able to sell it to the right person. Two or 3000 dollars to go to a dealer you're looking at only a few hundred probably because it's just so much work there is. Proportional relationship. You can look any collection up in a book. Yours anybody's you can look at any collection opened a book here's a list of what I got here's what the prices say in the book and and mini come to a number. But what number. Someone will pay you. Is proportional to how much work the collection is if you have ten. Raided Michael Jordan rookies were 500 dollars each. That's 5000 dollars a dealer might give you. You know three or 4000 dollars who knows. The point is you get closer to that number that you otherwise would because it's just such an easy. -- For someone else. But if you've got a 5000 dollar collection that is boxes and boxes and boxes of stuff in their rubber bands. And their largest you know maybe some hidden treasures binders. Whatever like mine. Then -- -- giving that -- marketing that same model money that's when you know five grand is it worth five grand. The dealer -- -- wanna pay you that three or 4000 dollars for that because you're just beat so so much time. To go through it all and solid all and that's again where might the helpful. To. Figure out how much your time is really -- -- put a number on it. Well sir I didn't have Joseph for your -- you try to try to I was watching. But some that didn't happen so I'll try for. I want looting maybe birdied 4%. -- Or what somewhat what the consignment shop you know someone who would take Mike are. The jury and giving -- assembling and selling their name Celtic on course so. You know I think the -- look at it -- -- really not rush. Knew I was doing nor did -- get it right right plus there was comic store that sold all. Yeah sure no that's very various very right and if you went forward anyway and sold on your own eventually that number would -- decrease. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Wanted to get the right price or not I went to a consignment but that people contact me. Right good points think Eugene two more things one this is were getting cards -- can be an advantage even if you're not getting the kind of grades that would allow freedom had this huge you know profit. It's just you take away some of the you know some of the risk. That a buyer might think if the card is graded. If you're selling raw you have no eBay record verses someone else who's got 101000 sales and their you know selling like crazy. But you're right where with what. What -- was saying but if you're selling -- that mitigates that a little bit. And I think there was going to be a second thing but that's one thing I thought of right there. A woman. Wrote it's it's funny it would happen today because I was thinking about just a few women seem to be collectors but woman named Diana wrote means wanted to know about Bryce Harper what's the right way to to buy into Bryce Harper. And I don't. Follow him real closely title possibly the new guys real closely but I do have a general rule on. On this you're thinking about appreciation. In the future. As. Difficult as it might be the most expensive cards are the ones to buy the most expensive cars climb the fastest. And with with guys now there are sometimes 220 rookie cards for guys -- -- -- it -- that. But there there are a variety of cards are cheap ones I think about hockey for this -- the last. -- of anything like this that it was with hockey and there'd be say a dozen different cards or peachy ultra victory names like that by six years ago. All the way up to the cup. The cut those cards are the ones that the most money's being spent and that's were the most action news now that if anybody can go buy a cup rookie and anybody can go by whatever the top thing is in in each sport. You do the best you can go and if you're trying to make money that's where you -- I think not to say. Any player necessarily will make money by the expense of cards are the place to be the -- cards. Our producer Richard series and an ultimate posters and as well they've they've made pathetic archery series. Well in general while not familiar with these products in general I would say on opened is better if you're looking for the most. Value and opened is better you could certainly open it and hit someone big and do better than you -- on open but. You just play the odds and on open products has. Has appeal as people. To open it and people like to gamble. But there are as far as that product in particular goes ball I would I would search it up on eBay NC which is city. Like if searchers angles search the singles NC. You know it is -- checked the only one who sells big -- Henderson Mike whoever the guys. Might be maybe with there would be Harlem -- in there would be a big card -- there were. A prank call he died he died many years ago. So well -- try to try to. That's what I would do I would do the math on it like -- of the guys are worth cracking this for. The other question I haven't I've got in 1993. Chops series baseball card and our box that it is rate cards are not 93 series -- the other you know. I don't know I I would guess not. Bomb there there are the occasional. Products from the early ninety's that. That do pretty well desert shield is a desert shield Topps baseball set that those are right. There are Tiffany sets from the eighties I mean I tend to Harlem. You know like any any collector -- Senior outlook look. Askance at the cards from those years because there's not a lot of value in them but I don't wanna say that. Across the board there are the rare exceptions again the use eBay for that. It's tight -- in the search. Are there exactly what you have and just see what comes up. And if you do completed listings the ones in red didn't -- be careful to distinguish between asking prices. And actual sale prices. So everyday about source to try to -- Yes it's the world's market mean that's always the best way to find out what things are really -- even if there I don't mean just cards that mean anything.
